With the recent release of the new Transformers flick Transformers: Rise of The Fallen Hasbro (and with good reason) has decided to repackage the first season of the original TV show. By now every living person knows a little something about The Transformers… Basically a race of living robots crash land on earth and bring with them a civil war they have been fighting for centuries. If you were old enough to remember the 80’s then most of you will have a soft spot for these giant robots that can change into cars, planes & other various machinery.

This is the first time you can have the whole season in one box set, previously it were broken into volumes, so this is a welcome changed. The video quality & sound are are both pretty good, they say it’s a new transfer and audio mix, but it doesn’t seem that different. Extras are pretty slim, however there is a 20 min. doc about the creation of the Transformers which is definitely worth watching. While there is nothing extraordinary about this box set, it’s pretty much exactly what any Transformers fan would want… all the episodes in one package with a good transfer. Bottom line it’s a must buy for any Transformers fan.

Most of you may not know of The State, but I guarantee you’ve seen the shows stars in some of your favorite movies and shows like I love the 80’s, Reno 911!, Role Models, 17 Again and many more then we can name.

The group has managed to stay fairly relevant more then 15 years since their original show The State debut on MTV. The show was an ensemble cast made up of 11 character actors that all came up together at NYU featuring the likes of Michael Ian Black, Robert Ben Garant, Kerri Kenney, Thomas Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio & Ken Marino.

The State is very reminiscent of the early days of SNL & SCTV. They really pushed the envelope and upon watching over a decade later they still manage to push the limits of what we think is acceptable on TV. The DVD is packed with every state episode, tons of un-aired sketches, interviews and other goodies. The video quality is pretty bad, mainly due to the source material and low production values. But Let’s be honest you’re not going to buy this because of production values and video transfer. This is a must buy for any fan of the cast’s work (Reno 911 etc.. ) and definitely worth renting.

I said in my review of Valkyrie that I was just about done with films surrounding World War II, but occasionally I am a suprised. Ed Zwick has been a favorite director of mine for a little while (Glory was fantastic), so when I heard he was doing another war picture I figured I would give it a shot. It also didnt help that Daniel “James Bond” Craig was the star. Defiance tells the story of the Bielski family, after having their family and village slaughterd by Nazi’s the Bielski’s take to the forrest where with the help of other Jewish refugees start a colony in the forests of Belarus for over two years combating sickness, starvation, and Nazis soldiers. What sets this WWII story apart from others is the fact this is about regular Jewish people put into extraordinary situations and how they deal with them.

Defiance has a somewhat greenish, gritty look that tends to translate very well in High-Def. Black levels are dead on and there is plenty of depth in the 1.78:1 framed picture. As far as the audio goes Paramount had provided us with a Dolby 5.1 TrueHD mix that is excellent when it needs to be, for being a “war film” Defiance is a rather quiet dialouge driven movie with a couple of big action set pieces. We also get a few pretty decent extras first up is an audio commentary by director Zwick which is pretty dry. We also get a few historical featurette’s about the actual events depicted in the film which are worth a watch. The Blu-ray is a knockout, with a stunning A/V presentation and a few solid bonuses. I’d suggest, if nothing else, giving this film a rent.

I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, Star Wars was always my thing. With the exception of The Wrath of Kahn I just never really had interest in the adventures of Captain Kirk and crew. But with the release of this summers mega-hit, J.J. Abrams reboot of the the franchise Paramount saw fit to release all 6 original cast films on Blu-ray Disc and we have your review.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture jumps this collection off and for the most part is as boring and dull as you remember it with a lot of beautifully composed shots of the Enterprise. The second film starts a 3 movie story arch (starting with Kahn and ending with The Voyage Home). The Final Frontieer (the 5th film) was meant to be the final chapter of the U.S.S. Enterprise until The Undiscovered Country came along (which is probally the worst in the series). All films are presented with a full 1080p Hi-Def restoration and are presented in stunning 7.1 Dolby TrueHD Audio. Trek has never looked or sounded this good! As far as special features go all the features from the previous 2-Disc Collector’s Editions have been ported over and mastered in High Definition, you also get a new 7th Disc called “The Captain’s Summit” which is a rountable discussion featuring Shatner/Nimoy and Patrick Stweart/Jonathan Frakes, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. While not a definitive collection of the entire Trek series it gives viewers new and established a look at the Kirk/Spock relationship that is forged in the new Star Trek film.

There have been numerous films about World War II over the years, it is a subject that is rich for storytellers but just when you think you’ve seen every story about “The Great War” we get another one. This time brought to you by Bryan Singer and Tom Cruise.

Valkyrie tells the story of an assassination plot by members of the German army to get rid of Adolf Hitler at the height of the War. Tom Cruise plays Col. Claus von Stauffenberg who while serving in North Africa is badly injuried loosing his left eye as well as some fingers. Upon his arrival back in Germany Stauffenberg puts a plan in motion to kill Hitler and end the war before he can enact his final solution. At its heart Valkyrie is a finely crafted suspense thriller (though everyone knows the outcome), and features great performances from Cruise and everyone involved. Valkyrie is presented in a 1.85:1 1080p HD transfer with 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio. Bryan Singer is a master behind the camera and it shows with the compositions he chooses, Valkyrie is easily the coolest looking W.W.II film made. On the features side of things you get 2 Audio commentaries: the first with Bryan Singer and Tom Cruise, the second with Co-Writers Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander. Also featured are a bunch of historical documentaries and featurettes about the event portrayed in the film, as well as a Q&A with Singer and Cruise. Valkyrie is an excellent picture that shines light on a little known event in our recent history, though World War II has been done to death it does add a little something new to the genre, but I must say after Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds this summer I think I am officially done with World War II.

Here here our first look at Mickey Rourke in Iron Man 2. In the film Rourke plays Ivan Vanko aka Whiplash, the image comes from USA Today and in the article that goes with the image the paper clears up some information about the character:

The suit, which the Russian criminal put together, consists of a pair of whips, powered by the glowing chest piece. Director Jon Favreau says that the technology used in Rourke’s suit is “definitely related” to the tech developed by Tony Stark, and “that’s part of the core theme of the film.”

Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series “Kung Fu” who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He said the embassy was informed by Thai authorities that Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.

The Web site of the Thai newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room.

Action films are a dime a dozen these days and most plots and storyline’s have been covered and recovered. However that doesn’t stop Hollywood from recycling ideas and repackaging them as new. However every once in a while a film comes a long that despite the cookie cutter plot rises above and shines brighter than the rest… Taken is that film.

When a former C.I.A. (Neeson) lets his daughter go on a trip to Paris to “enjoy the art”, she gets abducted and sold into slavery. Once he finds out he goes on a mission to Paris and kills everyone in his path! Like I said, nothing original but what makes this film work is its star Liam Neeson,he totally transformers into his character and he really makes this more than just your standard action flick. The Blu-ray edition gives you option to watch the film in its original theatrical cut as well as an extended cut and is presented in 2.4:1 1080p. While the transfer is not one of the best, it still does a great job in showcasing another side of Paris that’s rarely seen in other films. The 5.1 DTS Master Audio track however is the highlight of this disc, it is a very active track that will shake your room. The disc also has 2 audio commentary tracks (which are subtitled, because the Director Pierre Morel and the other crew members involved are French) but there is a lot there and it’s well worth your time. There are also some Side-by-Side comparisons with the action scenes, a making of featurette and a featurette of the premier. There is also a digital copy of the film on disc 2. Taken is the rare action film that if left in less competent hands wouldn’t have even been on my radar, but after watching it, trust me… It’s well worth your time.

Taken

David Fincher is one of few directors who’s work I will always watch, regardless of what he does. He has proven himself to be one todays elite directors, able to tackle any film genres (Thriller, Drama, Sci-Fi). When it was announced that David Fincher was directing F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” my interest was instantly piqued. It was released on Christmas Day 2008 and still made it to number 3 on our top 10 films of 2008.

Benjamin Button was born under “unusual circumstances”, he ages in reverse and was born as an old man in a baby’s body. As a child he meets Daisy (Cate Blanchett) who would become the love of his life. The film is comprised of far to much to discuss in this limited space, but trust me this film is definitely worth your time. B.Button is the first “Major” Blu-ray release from “The Criterion Collection”, anyone who knows Criterion knows they are the authority on quality and features and they spare no expense on this release. The video is presented in a stunning 2.40:1 1080p transfer, colors literally seem to jump off the screen, there’s also a 5.1 DTS Master Audio track that does not disappoint. On the features front we get an audio commentary with David Fincher which is a must listen for any enthusiast or aspiring filmmaker. On Disc 2 there’s a 3 Hour (Yes I said 3 HOUR) long Making-of-Documentary that spans the films sordid history, pre production, post production and the premier.

Professional Wrestling was always one of my favorite things to watch growing up. But as I have gotten older my interest in the “sport” has faded though there is something about it that I still enjoy. When I heard that director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requem for a Dream, The Fountain) was going to explore the world of professional wrestling in his next film I must say I was intrigued.

In the film “The Wrestler” actor Mickey Rourke plays Randy “The Ram” Robinson a wrestler who was in the prime of his life in the 80’s, but time has passed him by and after suffering a near fatal heart attack tries to reevaluate his life and career decisions. The film was shot documentary style and the video quality takes a hit because of it, there is a lot of grain but that is what the director and cinematographer intended. Another area where disc suffers is “special features”, unfortunately there is no audio commentary or any real in depth documentaries. There’s a making of documentary that’s fairly shallow and a round table discussion with former Professional Wrestlers (including Rowdy Roddy Piper, Lex Luger, and Diamond Dallas Paige) which was on film’s website. Thankfully the 5.1 DTS Master Audio sounds amazing. While the movie is fantastic and definitely one of the best movies of last year, this disc is lacking some some key features that I can’t help but feel they are saving for another release.

Thats right the long in limbo Green Hornet film has finally found its director (after Stephen Chow decided to bow out due to “Creative Differences”). According to Variety & The Hollywood Reporter Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine…, Science of Sleep) has signed on to direct the film with Seth Rogen and Chow still on tap to star in the film. For those who don’t know anything about the character here is a little rundown. Green Hornet is Britt Reid, a newspaper publisher by day who by night goes out in his masked “Green Hornet” identity to fight crime as a vigilante, accompanied by his similarly masked Asian manservant Kato and driving a car, equipped with advanced technology, called “Black Beauty”. The Green Hornet is often portrayed as a fair-to-above average hand-to-hand combatant and is often armed with a gun that sprays knock-out gas (an electric stun weapon called the “hornet’s sting” was added to his arsenal in the TV series).

Snatch is probally one of my favorite modern gangster films in recent memory, Writer/Director Guy Ritchie burst onto the scene with Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels and hasnt really looked back, with only a couple missteps along the way (Swept Away anyone?). When I had heard that Ritchie was planning a new London based gangster tale I was eagerly waiting to see how this one stacked up to his previous efforts, well now it’s being released on Tuesday the 27th on DVD and Blu-ray, and we have the review for you!

Film and Features

When a wealthy foregin mobster moves into London gangster Lenny Cole’s (Tom Wilkinson) turf, a small-timer (Gerard Butler) and his crew “The Wild Bunch” think they can play both sides and become big time. Add a hard-as-ice accountant (Thandie Newton), a rocker playing dead to boost record sales, wannabe music moguls (Jeremy Piven and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), a missing painting and a mosh of money and muscle, and you got a hell of a wild ride that very much on par with Ritchie’s previous films.

RockNRolla will be released in 3 different editions (a Single and 2-Disc DVD edition, and a 2-Disc Blu-ray edition), for the sake of the review we will be talking ONLY about the Blu-ray version. A nice collection of special features have been brought together for this release:
• Audio Commetary - by Director Guy Ritchie and Co-Star Mark Strong
• Deleted Scenes
• Blokes, Birds, and Backhanders: Inside RockNRolla - Making of Documentary [HD]
• Guy’s Town - Guy Ritchie reflects on his fascination with ever-evolving London [HD]

And the second disc is a Digital Copy of the film for your ipod, or computer for your on the go watching enjoyment.
- Rating: 4 out of 5

Tech Specs

RockNRolla is presented in its original 2.4:1 aspect ratio and is given a fantastic 1080p HD video transfer. Colors are presented very naturally, there is no evidence of edge enchancement or digital artifacts on the image. On the audio end RockNRolla packs the punch you expect it would, we are given an English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track as well as a standard 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound track, both tracks are robust and offer an indcredible expierence for your home theater environment.
- Rating: 5 out of 5

Overall Review

Another fine entry in Ritchie’s ever growing catalog of films, RockNRolla is an excellent film, so if you missed it on its theatrical run earlier this year, it is definately worth picking up and watching. If you liked Snatch or Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels you will definately enjoy this!
- Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5

The nominees for the 2008 Academy Awards have been announced and needless to say there are quite a few that were expected and some that were left out. For those of you wondering yes Heath Ledger was nominated for Best supporting actor, yes Mickey Rourke was nominated for Lead actor. Yes the Dark Knight was snubbed for every other MAJOR category, and no Bruce Springsteen wasnt nominated for best original song (which really pisses me off). For a full list of the nominations as well as my thoughts on who will will (which are bolded) after the jump.
