New Yahoo! Weather Geeklet

When I noticed that my geeklets used to retrieve and parse the weather icon images from Yahoo! weather were no longer working due to recent changes at yahoo.com, I had to update them which is what you'll find here. These are formatted for Washington DC so obviously you'll have to update the scripts with your country, state, city and numerical city code accordingly.

Another Tron Inspired Desktop

  Another Tron Inspired Desktop

This is based on the first Tron Inspired Desktop - In fact, it uses the same Wallpaper by Rasmsus Neilsen and Nocturne program by Blacktree.

Installing

Download and Install Geektool.

Download and set your Wallpaper.

Download the Geeklets.

Double-click each Geeklet to open it with Geektool.

Reposition the Geeklets.

Change your code to suit (see below).

Download, Install and move Nocturne to startupitems.

Customise Nocturne (see below).

Quit Geektool.

Done.

Note: The Airport Transmit Rate and UL/DL Rates will disappear if you have WiFi turned off.
Obviously you can use different Geeklets just as I have.

Customising your code

You may have to make some adjustments to the code depending on your system.

For the Temperature Geeklets to work:

Download, Install and Run Temperature Monitor.

Open Geektool, click on one of the temperature Geeklets.

Press the "..." button to the right of the "command" input to open the code in a separate window.

Change the values of
FNR>=11 && FNR<=11
to suit (eg. 1 and 2 represent my CPU temps while 11 represents my Heatsink temp).

Change
cut -c 5-
to remove the first x characters of the returned temperature readout (in my example, 5 as it removes " SMC " at the start of the readout).

Repeat for other temperature Geeklets.

Done.

Note: Temperature Monitor does not have to be running for the Geeklets to work.

For the Airport Transmit Rate Geeklet to work:

Open Terminal.

Paste the following code
sudo ln -s /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/Current/Resources/airport /usr/sbin/airport
.

Press Enter and enter your password.

Done.

If you don't know what the Airport Transmit Rate is.. it's the overall maximum speed that your network (computer to computer and internet) can operate at, and is usually limited by the networks router and your connection / proximity to it. 300MB/s seems to be the fastest.

To set the Current Weather Geeklet to your city:

Open Geektool.

Click on the Current Weather Geeklet.

Press the "..." button to the right of the "command" input to open the code in a separate window.

Change the number after "w=" in the code
curl --silent "http://xml.weather.yahoo.com/forecastrss?w=12708958&u=c" | grep -E '(Current Conditions:|C<BR)' | sed -e 's/Current Conditions://' -e 's/<br \/>//' -e 's/<b>//' -e 's/<\/b>//' -e 's/<BR \/>//' -e 's///' -e 's/<\/description>//'

You can use any American Zip Code or just google City Weather Code to find a specific code.

Done.

Customising Nocturne

By default Nocturne when set to "Night" mode inverts all the colours of your screen and makes them monochrome. To set it up like I have mine:

Open Nocturne Preferences.

Switch to "Day" mode.

Unselect all checkboxes except "Invert menu bar" and "Dim when active".

Set "Dim when active" to about one quarter.

Done.

All Done!

So here is one of the first backgrounds I've set up. Very clean, clear and concise without too much excess information. I used Nocturne for the black menubar, by the way.

Dock icons and black dock courtesy of acticTransfuse:
http://arctictransfuse.deviantart.com/art/Gill-Sans-Text-Dock-Icons-154466636
This includes a handy guide to set up your dock to look just like mine.

Red Ribbon courtesy of side-7:
http://side-7.deviantart.com/art/Red-Ribbon-194590265

Itunes geeklet+ a link to the ribbon I used courtesy of Fen_Li:
http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/geeklets/music/itunesgeeklet-/

Different Red Ribbon colors can be found here:
http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=red+ribbon+geektool#/d394hre

All the rest of the geeklets are easy to find and implement, so I don't really need to link them. The wave at the bottom was photoshopped out of the original image with a transparent background. You can find this image if you don't have photoshop right here: http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/geeklets/modules/upload/attachments/beachwavesonly.jpg I did not make this image, for the record. The whole background is here: http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/details/2803/nature'sbeachfloor.html

Enjoy!

First, I take no credit for the geeklets, thank to all of you in the community for them. I do take credit for the wallpaper though, I made that in keynote. Because there are a lot of files for the system info circular graphics, I didn't add them into this upload. Kudos to all who wrote the various codes I used.

Outputs your battery percentage, with colors

Just a simple script, that has been expanded on.

Make sure to use the font below for the exact output.

Font used: BebasNeue - pt 48

Modes:

AC Adapter Connected: Displays green text

No Adapter Connected: Displays default text

Battery running low (20%): Displays red text

Fully charged: Displays "Charged"

As simple as that. You can expand on it, with images, etc.

My new Geeked out Desktop

  My new Geeked out Desktop

I used a bunch of different geeklets I found on here and modified them a bit for my own liking. The Date and Time should be straight forward. I used the "Circle Volume Indicator" on here for volume, and the iTunes song meter down the bottom. I changed some things around in the code and made it longer. I also took the battery meter (same code as the iTunes meter) and used "_____\n\c" rather than" | \c" to make it vertical instead of horizontal.

Battery Meter:
ioreg=
ioreg -w0 -l | grep "ExternalConnected\|CurrentCapacity\|MaxCapacity" | awk '{print $5}'

acadapt=
echo $ioreg | awk '{print $1}'

maxpower=
echo $ioreg | awk '{print $2}'

curpower=
echo $ioreg | awk '{print $3}'

batpercent=
echo "scale=2;$cur_power / $max_power" | bc

bat_percent=
echo "$bat_percent * 100" | bc | sed 's/\.00//'

declare -i a=5
if [ $ac_adapt == "Yes" ]
then
  echo "\c"
else
  echo "\c"
fi

while [ $a -lt $batpercent ]
do
    echo "_____\n\c"
    a=
expr $a + 5

done
echo "\033[1;31m_____\n\033[0m\c"
while [ $a -lt 100 ]
do
    echo "\033[1;31m_____\n\033[0m\c"
    a=
expr $a + 5

done
echo "\n"
unset batpercent
unset a

I'm trying to make the iTunes Player switch if Spotify is playing instead and it works with the meter, just not the player. It would also be nice to have it do the same with YouTube because I listen to a lot of my music on there.

This is my current desktop theme. It has pretty useful widgets like weather, time date, clock, processes, system information, keyboard and mouse battery, and free space. The links for most of the geeklets and the backgrounds are included. The geeklets that aren't included are pretty much common sense. For icons, I used the Flurry icon set which can be found on Google. Some of the geeklets have accidentally been pushed to the front but that can be fixed in Properties.

Hola!

I was working on a python script to make facebook notifier and its finally done. Nothing fancy just instant updates of notifications without opening the browser. I am including the facefeed.py script, just grab your notification rss feed from your Facebook account and edit the file and put it there. Also, change the location of facefeed.py in the facefeed.glet so that it runs it.
Current refresh time is 60 secs, decrease it if your famous and vice versa. You can also change how many feeds to display at once, just change the range in the python script.

Please let me know any comments, criticism and love.

Thanks

Sukhi

P.S. Extension py is not allowed so I changed it to .txt, just change it to .py.

I used the weather geeklet from here
