So the Van Gogh project from last week has seen an epiphany and progress since last week!
I don't think I am going to give away the final "vision" of the quilt until it is done, but if people see what the final quilt will look like from the picture, so be it!

Without further ado:

I am also working on a mini quilt for a swap. This is a new technique for me, so I hope it all turns out ok. She said she liked owls, so she is getting owls.

WiP---I'm Stuck!!!

So as you guys have read I wanted to do a cool quilt with the Van Gogh panel I picked up so I started framing them in. Once that was done I went to the design wall and tried a couple of layouts to see if I could come up with something good.

Here is the layout I decided on:

I know how I want to finish the quilt, but in my ambition I am choosing to design the "blocks" for the currently empty spaces myself. Great idea with the exception that I have no idea how to make the thing I see in my head!

So there it sits on my design wall.

As far as other projects in the works, I have an idea for an Alice in Wonderland quilt that I am currently collecting fabric for. I am always on the lookout for Alice "themed" fabrics: Teacups/pots, Chess, cards, things that look Alice-like (if that makes any sense) Donations always accepted! HAHA
I also have the pixel project staring me in the face, but I want to use the gridded Pelon to sew it all together. Problem is I have no idea how to use it. Tips welcome!
Then there is the bargello-ish quilt for my daughter, slowly but surely.
There is also a bunch of stuff I want to try from various books and sites.
And let's not forget the block swap and miniquilt swap I am in....

For a new quilter I seem to be really busy.

Oh well, back to it!

I love these blocks!!! These two lovely blocks are from Staci in AZ - check her out - and I love them. The two together almost look like a beautiful sunburst.

WIP Wednesday

Ive taken a Van Gogh panel I bought, and cut out each individual frame. So far in the quilt design I have 3 inch strips framing each picture, and am still mulling over where to go from here.

I have various batiks and prints in Van Gogh style that I can use to tie in all the pieces. We will see how everything looks framed together.

I can't show you the mini bargello completed - it is going in the mail today to my mini quilt swap partner. I'll post pictures of that when she receives it.

My daughter saw it and said "I want a big one like that", so she picked fabrics, and here is block 1 of many more to come for her:

Decided to go with black border. Have it spray basted to a backing fabric. Now just to quilt it, but still undecided on that matter.

Now that my partner received her block, I can post pictures here.

I chose something simple, hoping to highlight the prints - something she could dress up or dress down - hopefully making it a block she could use and love.

Mini Bargello

I've been wanting to try a bargello quilt for a while, and decided to try it in mini version first.

Here is my first attempt - no instructions or pattern, just cut strips, sewed, and cut and sewed. You know how that goes.

Thoughts? Thinking of adding a black border to it. And from there - quilting? Waves, swirls, straight line? Still floating around in my head what to do. Opinions and advice appreciated.

First 2011 Finish

Finally finished hand sewing binding on the quilt for my brother in law. It was my first attempt at hand sewing, and my wife helped some. Once I got the hang of it I felt like I was on a roll. I did a pieced binding on this quilt, and really like the effect it gave it. This quilt is really really warm - the flannel back is very nice.

Phew - this quilt had some bumps. I ran out of a fabric I needed for some of the larger blocks, and had to run to the fabric store mid quilt. Luckily they had some, so that was one crisis averted.

Now that I am at this stage, I just need to "frame" the quilt with a black border. Already have that cut out, so after work tonight I plan on finishing this top off.

I really like the look of this quilt. I feel that the colors really stand out between the black sashing. He had requested deep earth tones, and I think I fulfilled that.

Random Quilt Block

I saw this quilt block in Quilmaker's 100 blocks, and decided to have at it.

It's block #164 - Infinity.

Think it turned out a very masculine block, with the dark toned colors I used. Was quick and easy to put together and I had fun sewing it up.

I saw this pattern on Robert Kaufman's website, and knew I needed to make it. So, I asked my BIL color and pattern preferences and started buying fabric.

Here is the first 1/3 of the quilt, up on the design wall.

Now that it's all cut, the piecing goes pretty quick, so I can't wait to get more done on it.

That's right the gift quilt is now a completed top!
I also got the back made, and last night laid it on the floor and put tons and tons of pins in it to prepare for quilting(I don't have the confidence, or walking foot, to quilt it myself so my beautiful wife is doing it)

Here is the quilt I am currently working on the blocks are made from various scraps cut using the template from my wife's fan quilt. I then pieced these together in six piece blocks and once they were sewed and ironed, cut them down to my block size.

The empty space in the middle will contain a special block that i can't reveal until after Christmas, as I don't want to ruin the suprise.
I'm not quite sure what I am thinking by giving my very first quilt as a gift, but hopefully he likes it anyway.

The pixel project is still calling my name, but it will probably remain on the back burner until after the holidays as i have another gift after this one.

The Pixel Project: Episode 1

Being the creative, big thinker I am, it was only logical that I come up with something extremely meticulous as my first full blown quilt project.
What could this be you ask?
Here is where this whole thing started:

Awesome right??? Who wouldn't want to make a quilt depicting a black mage from the Final Fantasy series? And it wouldn't be that hard, just some squares sewn together right?

So I pulled out the scraps my wife had and started sorting, pulling out any blues, blacks, and browns.
Once sorted, I realized I was probably going to need more blue, but I should be ok with everything else.

Then...I started cutting. And cutting. and cutting...seriously I cut for a solid 2 weeks. Thinking I should probably have enough cut do put this thing together I decided I should count how many "pixels" I would need of each color to complete the project. After counting, I wanted to cry. I was nowhere near enough fabric for my blues and blacks.
After a quick trip to the quilt store for a few FQs, I cut some more.
The cutting is now complete, and this is the mess the pixel project has now become:

This is roughly 400 2 1/2 inch squares of various fabrics, and I still haven't decided how to do my background yet.

I have set this project aside for the moment though and am throwing together a scrap quilt as a Christmas gift. Pics of that once I get a little more done.

Welcome to my journey into quilting! My wife has been quilting for about a year, and i have recently decided to give it a try. I intend to create quilts with more of an art slant, and I have fused my first wall hanging which is waiting for thread painting and quilting. I have also begun to cut the pieces for another quilt which i have dubbed "The Pixel Project" which i will be documenting the steps for here.
My next post will be part one of the pixel project, showing my prep steps amd cutting/layout.
