PDF (Portable Document Format) files are a great medium of sharing information. They are light (in terms of compression), secure (with high levels of data encryption) and support many interactive functions like hyperlinks, text notes, mark-ups, etc. The only shortcoming of these PDF documents is that they cannot be opened or read using any of the windows stock readers. Few days back while I was doing several tasks on some other pc, while opening a PDF file realized that it didn’t had Adobe Reader installed and because of which I was stuck. Later I tried to find some online tools which can be used to read the PDF files that are stored locally on your computer.

Samurajdata is an online service that enables you to upload you PDF files and then view them on your web browser. The script they use is an open source one and you can download it from their website.

3. Gmail:

First time when I came to know that even gmail can be used to view PDF files, I was amazed. The whole process is quite simple. Actually it is based on the fact that gmail allows you to view an html version of PDF attachments. All you need to do is just to compose a new email and then attach the PDF that you want to view, send this email to yourself (same id or some other gmail id).

Now when you open that email, navigate to the attachment area and you will be able to see a link “View” there. Just follow the link and file will be opened in the browser.

PDF Online Reader is a nice online service where you can upload your PDF files and later view them online. Apart form reading the document the service also allows you do minor editing work (like adding annotations, highlighting text, etc.) in the file.

For unregistered users the site offers only to view PDF files less than 10 MB and less than 100 pages.

This site requires you to have java on your machine. When you open the site in your browser it loads the web interface of its reader and from the reader you can select and open your PDF files.

But if you are not too good at physics, then also you can master the contraption building with some practice.

Players can get one star for reaching the finishing point, but achieving the other two stars varies from stage to stage. Most of us have experienced a problem of laptop overheating at some point of time in life. Overheating is a very severe problem that occurs mostly in small sized laptops. In desktops there is ample of space and hence they are more efficient in cooling themselves. Laptops on the other hand are very small and this reduces their self cooling efficiency.

Generally in all the processors there is an inbuilt DTS (Digital thermal Sensor). This DTS gives you very accurate and high resolution temperature reading. There are some applications that can read this DTS device and hence can tell you the internal temperature of such devices.

What are acceptable temperature levels for laptops?

The acceptable temperature levels for a processor are generally specified on their website.  Most cpu’s maximum temperature limit  is around  90° Celsius (194° Fahrenheit) but they try to run your laptops below this level, if your computer tries to reach the upper temperature limit then it is shutdown.

Just few days back one of my blog visitor emailed me about an unidentified process named KMservice.exe running on his machine. His concern was that, though the process didn’t showed any signs similar to a virus but it was detected as a Riskware by an Antispyware program.

What exactly is Kmservice.exe?

KMservice.exe is a Microsoft office pirate activator. It is a cracking tool that fools Microsoft office to think that the MS office version installed on the machine is a legit version and is pre activated. This program cracks Microsoft office by tampering the Windows Key management service.

In normal mode this service keeps on running in the background and will consume very less CPU resources.

Location of this File:

Kmservice.exe is located at %WINDIR%\kmsem\KMService.exe

Or sometimes also at: %WINDIR%\KMService.exe

And the file size is: 151,552 bytes

How is it installed on my computer?

As, I have foretold that the file is a part of Microsoft office 2010 pirate activator. Hence this file is present on your computer because on your machine you have a pirated version of MS Office 2010.

Please note that if you have activated Microsoft Office 2010 in the legal prescribed way then this file should not be present on your computer.

Is it a dangerous Program?

The actual Kmservice process is not dangerous, though it is illegal to use but using it does not harm your computer. Antiviruses detect this file as a malware malicious file or some hacktool as they don’t want anyone to use cracked, patched or pirated software.

But Hackers, Crackers and all the bad coders of the world are smart enough they generally create viruses with the name of some genuine process. This helps them to disguise their malware as a genuine windows component. So if you have kmservice running on your machine and you have not activated Office 2010 by using the pirated method then there is a strong possibility that your system is infected by some malicious program.

How to find whether KMService process running on my system is a malware or not?

To find if your system is infected by some malicious program with the same name (“Kmservice.exe”) follow any one of the below methods:

Method #1:

If you have not installed Microsoft Office 2010 on your machine and you still find an instance of kmservice.exe running in task manager, then there is a strong possibility that your system is infected.

Method #2:

If you have installed MS office 2010 on your system but you have activated it in the legit way. By legit way I mean you have not used any crack or patch to activate it. And still you have spotted an instance of kmservice running on task manager then it’s a strong possibility that your system is infected.

Method #3:

In this method simply check if kmservice registry key exists in your registry editor. Follow the below steps:

1. Open the Run window by pressing Win+R
2. Type “regedit” (without quotes) in the run and hit enter.
3. Now navigate to the path : HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\KMService\Parameters\Application
4.  If you are not able to find out any such key in the registry editor then this simply means that you have not installed the activator patch for MS office 2010. Even after this if you are able to see any running instance of Kmservice then it simply depicts that your system is infected.

How to fix KMservice.exe

In case KMservice installed on your system is a malware follow the Fix 1 otherwise follow the Fix 2.

Fix 1# How to remove the malware:

Simply scan your system with a good antivirus and it will take care of everything else itself.

Fix 2# How to disable the antivirus alerts or pop-ups if you have yourself installed KMService:

If you have yourself installed the kmservice.exe and now you are fed up of your antivirus which is showing alerts about deleting this process then you can simply add this process to the exclusion list of your antivirus and it won’t prompt you again for deleting this file.

Securing a blog is one of the few things that we should start doing right from the word go. And in order to help you on this I have highlighted seven ways that can help you to harden your blog security.

1. Update, Update and Update:

In each and every version of WordPress, its developers sincerely try to fix some security loopholes and performance issues. In this way every new version of the WordPress is better than the previous one. And hence it is a good practice to keep your WordPress up to date. For minor level patch releases it is better to upgrade right away. But in case of some major update, it’s good to wait for a week’s time and check out the WordPress support forums for any instance of upgrade problems.

Similarly, you should also keep your plug-ins up-to-date. If you are not using a particular plug-in anymore then it’s a good idea to deactivate and delete it. This makes your blog secure and also has a positive effect on the blog performance.

2. Limit the number of login attempts:

Many hackers mostly the smarter ones also use brute force techniques to break into your blogs. In a brute force attack a hacker uses a tool to input all possible combinations of usernames and passwords to log onto your system. This brute force attack can be stopped by applying a limit on the unsuccessful login attempts.

For example you can set a login limit to something like, if a hacker types your password incorrectly for 3 times then his IP will be blocked to login for 3 hours.

You can implement this on your blog by using the Login LockDown plug-in. The number of incorrect tries and the blocked time both can be set by the admin.

This method becomes futile if the hacker is using a dynamic ip address or is accessing your blog through a proxy.

3. Change the prefix of DB tables:

By default the WordPress database tables are prefixed with “wp_”.This makes it easier for a hacker to guess your database table names and do something wrong with them. So, to avoid this it is a good practice to change your database prefix to something more unique which a hacker cannot guess.

I personally used WP Security Scan plug-in to do this.

4. Change your password frequently:

Merely having an alphanumeric password is not sufficient to protect your blog from hackers. Apart from complex passwords you should also keep on changing your passwords at least ever three months.

It’s much safer to use different password for your email accounts, FTP, Cpannel and Blog. So, that if a hacker gets to know anyone of them then also you can control the other things.

5. Hide the contents of directories:

If you navigate to some directory on your blog (like: /wp-content/uploads/) just after WordPress installation then you will be able to see a complete directory structure. This is not a good thing as a hacker can take an undue advantage of this. So, it’s always a good idea to turn off indexing on directories.

You can do this by simply adding the below line in your htaccess file.

6. Stop using login name “Admin”:

The default login name for the Administrator account in WordPress is Admin. Many blog owners initially don’t care about this. But using the username “Admin” makes a hacker’s job 50% easier as he already knows the username and now he only needs to know the password.

It is also a bad idea to keep your user name and the name under which you blog same, because hackers can easily guess such things.

To make it more clear I will give an example for instance, if a blogger named “Andy” has both his username as well as the Author Name as “Andy” then it becomes much easier for a hacker as he already knows the users name.

It is always a better idea to change your user name to something more secure. You can easily change the blog username by using WP Secure Scan plug-in.

7. Hide your WordPress version:

If you show your WordPress version openly on your blog, a hacker can exploit this by knowing what exploits or vulnerabilities exist for a particular version.

You can hide this manually by deleting this from your blogs header file or alternatively you can use Secure WordPress plug-in.

Bonus tip – Backup Your Blog:

This is a golden tip, backing up your database can help you in the cases in which your blog gets hacked. In case your blog gets hacked and you have a backup of your blog then you can easily set it up again. And for this reason you should take regular backups of your blog. For making the backup process automated you can use BackWPUp plug-in. This plug-in facilitates the backup process.

You can also take manual backups of your blogs home directory and database directly from the Cpannel.
