The tracert was fine and connected in a reasonable time. However, there was a fatal error in one of your modules. The error also disclosed your full path, which is something to avoid. Rather than disclosing it here, I'll pass the info to you directly, if I can.

No meaning? What a sad existence.

Defect or not, we all crave something beyond ourselves, and that is not ego-centric. Quite the opposite.

In truth there is no meaning or purpose for our existence in this universe, and I find it a pretty self centred approach in life to think so. Science cannot remove meaning from something that isn't meaningful in the first place.

We live in a universe described by physicists as highly entropic - more likely to be disordered than ordered (2nd law of thermodynamics). Yet, there is something orderly about what we see and observe. We live in a marvelous time and space - the raw matter can be combined in many ways, yet lacks life without spirit.

My evidence? I've watched my children being born and I've just spent time with my wife's grandmother as she neared death. They all speak to me of a power beyond understanding.

Fearful of Debate

Hello Jeff,

Should we perhaps have a new sub forum for Healthy Debate with a disclaimer that states "you might not like what is written in here because you might start questioning your beliefs so enter at your own risk"

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think we'll leave things as they are. We're certainly not fearful of debate and always open to honest discussion. In fact, we're all about the free exchange of ideas and not threatened if someone offers an opinion we don't agree with. Although we do expect members to be civil with and respectful of those they disagree with.

Could you also explain how they where off topic so I know how to conduct myself in the future. They seemed perfectly on topic to me.

I'd be happy to. Please highlight the comment(s) you have questions about and I'll do my best to recall why admin intervention was required.

I started using Drupal a few months ago (Drupal 6)
It works fine for me but I hear Drupal 7 is better in some ways.
I want to switch to Drupal 7 now but I think I am going to need a tutorial or something
because it is harder to use (so they say)
Could you guys recommend me a tutorial or something?

Hey newagethinker,

If you honestly believe that I am wrong and your points have more grounding than mine, why then do you feel the need to hide these comments?

Had you been making a point, any point, I likely would not have deleted it. For example, had you wanted to discuss getting married, life as an atheist, or spiritual conflicts, that probably would have been all good. Paranormal activity, photography, traveling, music, reading, arts and crafts, or movies? Yep! Dogs, cats, rats, mice, or hamsters? Sure. Unfortunately, it did not mention any of these things. It was, as my edit states, off topic. You were unkind to another user, though. As we've discussed before; that will not be tolerated here.

Hello Chrissy,

Trust you are married by now; wishing you happiness!

I find myself doing an inordinate amount of housekeeping these days. Unfortunately, this thread has become an innocent bystander. Should you desire to continue this discussion, please feel free to create a new post.

Rules of Conduct

NonProfit,

It may be of interest to know that the Atheists Anonymous website uses the following rules of conduct for their forum:

Message Board Rules: Atheists Anonymous seeks to be a community of support to both atheists and theists alike. We strive to create an environment in which atheists can exchange ideas with like minded individuals. We also seek to create an environment in which theists can ask questions, participate in discussions, and even challenge atheism.

All of this is to be done in an environment where we respect each other and agree to disagree.

With that said, there are a couple of straightforward rules all forum posters must follow if they wish to continue using the Atheists Anonymous Message Board:

1. Refrain from inflammatory remarks.
2. Criticize only the argument, not the person defending it.
3. Do not register a nickname that imitates that of a poster who is already registered.
4. Do not register multiple accounts.
5. Remember to post topics in a relevant section.

All thread/post deletions & member bans will be left up to the discretion of the moderators.

I think we could use something similar here. And yes, I reference the Athiests website (whom I have nothing in common with) in light of newagethinker.

How to get banned from G&G

Well, this will probably be my last post before I get banned for being controversial so umm...

newagethinker, you intrigue me.

I am closing this thread. It has nothing do to with your opinions and everything to do with how you chose to express them.

Consider some of the statements you have made in this thread alone:

God, did you decide to follow Christianity, you could believe in a God and not subscribe an ancient stone age myth.

Simply because it means you will live your life in this cult for your entire life.

You are indoctrinated into Christianity. Brainwashed probably through your upbringing.

Can't you see its all ancient nonsense?

Don't you think this kind of behaviour is incredibly perverse? As I have said before, it is one of the biggest hate crimes against humanity, ever.

How can you believe that and be in sane mind?

If "his word", a 2000 year old story book written by primitive humans, is good enough for you.

After you are allowed to lob multiple insults you preemptively claim to be the victim of censorship. The above comments can add nothing to this, or any other, discussion. You have made a pattern of this form of interaction as demonstrated in other threads. You claim Christians' beliefs are "unacceptable" yet ironically label us as intolerant. On the contrary, I feel this community has gone to great lengths to be loving, inclusive and continually engaging, in spite of your repeated incendiary statements.

I am in the process of developing a standard of conduct. Although the forum averages between 15,000 and 20,000 unique visitors/month and we've never had this problem before, you have reminded me (again and again) the time has come. Truthfully, it is a task I feel like I do not have the time to complete.

Until I can do so, please remember be civil! No one will ever be banned from Geeks & God for simply being controversial, although you may well be if you continue to treat others in the fashion you have become accustomed to.

Yawn.

There is no God, your just hallucinating.

If "his word", a 2000 year old story book written by primitive humans, is good enough for you. Why don't you try and read some science books, you knows, ones based on fact, written by intelligent people. The kind of thing you might find in a school? Or is somehow that not good enough for you?

Evolution is an operational science, get your facts straight.

Your such a hypocrite though, "imaginations about that past can be described as historical theory". Sounds a lot like religion don't you think?

Can anything, anything at all that religion says be observed and repeated?

Come on Joshua, you clearly a clever chap as your church services haven't fulfilled your answers about science so you went looking for more information. Where you went wrong unfortunately is to believe the trash on all those Christian science websites.

Well, this will probably be my last post before I get banned for being controversial so umm...

I only mention this because you are newish to Drupal but by enabling this you should notice a huge performance boost. The project page explains all this, but check out http://drupal.org/project/plup or http://drupal.org/sandbox/axe312/1414286 (Bulk Media Upload claims to be exactly what you're looking for; "a new node will be created for every file." It is a sandbox project, but this type of module either works or it doesn't, and you can likely uninstall it after you load up your images. So the risk is much less than having ongoing dependency on an experimental module.) http://groups.drupal.org/node/155764 or http://groups.drupal.org/node/20291 might prove helpful, as well. (Although a quick skim does not always make it clear if each file is saved as it's own node.)

Lastly, Re: "I am providing a "Parent's Account" so that they can view and monitor what their kids do on the site." The kids know that, right?

Also kind of related,

I have built a node based gallery. I am using the "Disqus" commenting module and service. Is there any way I can have the "disqus" comment form come up in a popup rather than having to open each individual image node or have the image node load up in a popup?

And is there a way I can batch upload images as nodes? At the moment I am uploading each image one at a time as a node and it is a very laborious task. I am wanting each image as a node as I want to be able to comment on each individual image.

Or can you suggest a better way of doing it.

Thanks for your reply.

First I probably should have been clearer on my experience with drupal. I don't consider myself as an experienced user or even an amateur user, I have built a couple of sites before with drupal. One being my own personal site. I understand how it works, but I don't know programming. I can do html but thats about it, anything else I can possibly look through code and possibly work out what it could be in reference to, but that's about it.

The reason I hate Facebook is because of all the problems it creates between our youth and other people and is really a big issue in our youth ministry at the moment. I am wanting to create a place that could be free from that.

Also creating our own place allows the youth who aren't allowed to have Facebook to have a place they would be allowed to go that their parents can know it is safe. (I am providing a "Parent's Account" so that they can view and monitor what their kids do on the site.)

The site I have built for my youth group is here : http://newheartchurch.com.au/imprintyouthministries

Thanks again.

Building Facebook in Drupal

Hey dfabri,

Welcome. First off, a couple of thoughts; This sounds like a huge project, and as you've said you're just learning Druapl, I'd strongly suggest you build a couple of simple sites first before you jump headlong into a coding nightmare. Second, don't simply clone any site. Certainly it's advised you survey successful sights for ideas you can glean, but always tailor your experience to your audience. Simply because you hate Facebook doesn't mean your kids will, and unless you can provide something fresh, they have little incentive to utilize your alternative.

First, don't know if you have any D6 experience, but when working in D7, having An Introduction to Entities is a big help. Don't have a D7 reference handy, but here is a good D6 demonstration of node references. User References are a similar concept and would be what you would use when tagging people. Checkout this Comparison of node / entity references and relationships modules for some options available.

Creating a dashboard could be a usability improvement when users view their own wall. Here is a Comparison of Dashboard modules. And there are lots of activity stream modules which could display user activity. Of course, Views would factor heavily here, as well. Organic Groups would be what you'd use for group pages.

Also check out an attempt at a facebook clone (the links in the initial post 404 but the comments are valuable) as well as this Stackexchange discussion.

Again, quite an ambitious first project! Please keep us posted on how things go!

I maintain referencing a few select passages out of a long document actually demonstrates significantly more thought than spouting something off the top of his head.

For me, there was no 'conversion experience', but a deepening acceptance of the power evident all around, both seen and unseen. Science, in what it calls pursuit of the truth, can only observe and describe. It never really explains or ascribes purpose to life.

All human desires have a means of being fulfilled - we satiate our hunger by eating, our thirst with drinking, our sexual desires through... Well, you get the point. Also in every human is a desire for meaning. Science, instead of answering that desire, removes all meaning from life.

What you label a stone age myth is a current day reality for me and all Christians

Would you mind elaborating on what evidence you've seen that suggests there is some supernatural power?

You're right in saying that humans have a desire for meaning, this is an unfortunate evolutionary trait that's burdened us throughout our existence. There are cognitive processes in our brains that for some of us are more apparent than others, but these can sensibly be counteracted by reason and truth.

In truth there is no meaning or purpose for our existence in this universe, and I find it a pretty self centred approach in life to think so. Science cannot remove meaning from something that isn't meaningful in the first place.

On the flip side however, meaning and purpose can be created within our lives individually, through various means like building a family, devoting time to hobbies, spending time with friends etc etc.

I think the religious of the world all have an obligation to answer questions about their faith; if bold claims are made and used in society, equally bold evidence needs to exist in order for religions to have any standing within humanity to ensure it's positive growth.

What is asserted without proof, can be dismissed without proof.

Steve,

I've got no issues with how you're handling this so far; there's no reason to have a contract if both parties are going to ignore it.

However, to move forward I'd suggest calling a meeting - you, the owner, and the owners nephew. The agenda is one question: "What do we have to do to finish this?".

Have documentation showing all your contact (or attempted contacts). Detail how you've asked for particular content, and it hasn't been received in a timely fashion. Be firm, and be prepared to walk off the job - this is a business, even if you only run it part time. Explain your frustrations in terms of not getting the content, and ask how best to proceed. Comment that you're frustrated "only because I'm not able to help them as much as you'd like, because I don't have the content. We're all pushing in the same direction - we want your business to be successful". It's amazing how such a simple comment can relax the atmosphere.

Do NOT have this meeting without the nephew there. He's the one who should be feeling uncomfortable throughout the meeting, not you. Offer to bring in a copywriter and a photographer (at the clients expense) if they cannot deliver the content.

Hey Steve,

Sorry you're in such a situation.

Working for yourself, either full- or part-time can be incredibly rewarding. However, there are times like this when it is no fun at all.

Before the meeting, I'd be certain to be aware of the terms of the contact and how well each of you have met your obligations. Then, determine what you need to feel like you want to proceed with this client. Go in, be honest, humble, and even-tempered.

Most customers I've met prefer flat-rate, however that potentially puts the developer on the hook for putting in much more time than is initially expected. It sounds like you've already spent at least 8.5 of your 13 estimated hours and may have a lot more development to do. Depending on the terms you agreed to, that might mean you earn less per hour than you intended to. As least the way I read this short post, it seems to be a separate issue than their inability to provide content.

It's always best to try, as best as you can, to see the situation from the other person's viewpoint. Obviously, they wanted a site enough to contract with you but not enough to follow through. Try and find causality; cashflow, disorganization, technophobia, change in focus, conflicting desires between the owner and the nephew, frustrations with you? Then, try to craft a solution which could make everyone happy. Perhaps you populate with dummy content and let them fix it whenever they get around to it. Or maybe they pay additional fees and supply the information so you can finish. Maybe it means you stick to your guns, cancel the contract and expect them to pay in full. But however it goes down, try your best to remain honest, humble, and even-tempered. This stuff is no fun.

Let us know how it goes!

Google Maps works great for smaller sites, but they've recently begin to start charging sites with higher traffic levels.
Drupal education

I receive a 404 when I visit that page.

If you're interested in building an education-centric Drupal site, there are many options to help you get started.

Modules:
Skill Compass allows organizing resources for learning in a way that makes it easy to find new topics to learn and resources for learning those topics.
The Learning Registry is a new approach to capturing, sharing, and analyzing…Not a website or repository…[it is] designed to facilitate the exchange of data behind the scenes…

Distributions:
Julio is a distribution targeted for schools, small colleges, and academic departments within universities.
Open Academy is an university website in a box.
OpenAcaDept is a Drupal 7 distribution that can be used for creating academic department or faculty websites.

Unreleased Distributions:
Eduglu is a robust social learning engine with pluggable educational tools.
OpenScholar represents a paradigm shift in how the personal academic and research web sites are created and maintained.

There are several "Theories" for how sex originated, I will let you google these on your own ;)

Sadly, I didn't expect anything less.

First up why did he not give us just the one language? Or at least why not make all the languages translate into each other better. Doesn't really seem the work of an all powerful creator.

This is a great question.

Seems more like languages have evolved, hence the difference and also similarities.

But don't jump the gun here.
We know there could only of been one language when God created as there were only two people? Remember Adam and Eve?

Read Genesis 11

The Tower of Babel
1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel—because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

You do not need to be a theologian to understand why God split the languages.

... so that we may make a name for ourselves ...

God simply does not tolerate this sort of action or thinking. We are to be self-less, not boastful, arrogant or full of pride for these things are evil. And..

... otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.

This was also clear disobedience from what God had told them to do. In Genesis 9:1

“Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.”

and again in verse 7

“As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”

To the point...
You are absolutely right!

Surely God created the world, so I guess he created all the languages.

Josh.

Though isn't that what

Though isn't that what religion is all about, just taking on someone else's beliefs as your own?

A leading anticreationist philosopher, Michael Ruse would at least admit:

“Evolution is promoted by its practitioners as more than mere science. Evolution is promulgated as an ideology, a secular religion—a full-fledged alternative to Christianity, with meaning and morality. I am an ardent evolutionist and an ex-Christian, but I must admit that in this one complaint … the literalists are absolutely right. Evolution is a religion. This was true of evolution in the beginning, and it is true of evolution still today. … Evolution therefore came into being as a kind of secular ideology, an explicit substitute for Christianity.”

Ruse, M., How evolution became a religion: creationists correct? National Post

Michael seems to believe in evolution because everyone else does, don't you think?

When and why did you become Christian?

I can not give you a specific date, however it was late high-school when I saw how people treat one another, talk to one another, lie and decieve-you get the point. Then I saw how Christians act, its totally opposite, I wanted that, I wanted to know why they acted in this way. I sought God and He has always been there, waiting for me. His word was more than enough for me, however opposition arises when you find God, specifically "science" vs the Bible. I have seen the Bible stand firm through all my questions and those who would challenge it. Because of that how can I turn from it?

I believe in the Bible, I believe that is the word of God and that it speaks truth. Why? Becuase it says so and because history and the earth says so.

Evolution is not operational science, hence evolution does not assist science in any breakthrough's. Operational science can be observed and repeated, imaginations about the past can be best described as historical theory, but not science.

Great support and Root level control of a VPS server

Hi Jim,

I got a Media Temple DV server a few months back. So far things have gone pretty smooth.

I have used both shared hosting packages and a dedicated managed servers. This is my first experience with Plesk. Compared to my shared host control panel, the Plesk interface lets you do pretty much the same server set-up operations as my shared host Web Control Panel. Some functions seem a bit slow to do via Plesk IMO. Overall it was pretty easy to set up. You can also get root SSH access and make changes via the command line (which i prefer).

As far as "what's included for a Drupal site", you should have everything you need to install off the bat. Plesk does have an auto install for Drupal, but I recommend installing Drupal yourself.

I did have to make some modifications to enable PHP SOAP (for the Ubercart FEDEX Quotes module) and to give Drupal access to paths outside of the web directory for Ubercart file downloads. MT support helped by either pointing me to tutorials in their Knowledge Base or sending me to independent tutorials.

Matt Farina recommended on these forums to run APC to increase performance.

The coupon code "retailmenot" can save you 20%.

I am glad I found this post even though it is out-of-date - I have only started using Drupal and have very little experience with it, so any tips are appreciated, and these ones are twice as helpful since I am a regular user of Google Maps.

We're waiting for our approval, too, especiallly now that livestream.com has eliminated its free plans from what I can see. But more than that, YouTube is just so much easier for people to find.

Very excited about this. I imagine Google is backlogged with churches clamoring for Apps access finally, so it'll likely be awhile.

We are just starting up live streaming in the next month. And I'm going to test out the Youtube Live feature and see where that gets us. If you are a non-profit you can apply for a Youtube Nonprofit Memebership which gets you a couple cool things in addition to the ability to live stream for free. I don't know much outside of that because I'm still waiting for the final approval from Google. I'll update here when that passes through.

Benefits of using Youtube are that you can integrate it into Google+ and Google hangouts. I'm sure there are a few things that will raise its ugly head once I start testing stuff out.

The future of education

kpinky, are you familiar with the Khan Academy? A wonderful introduction to it is the founder's TED talk Salman Khan: Let's Use Video to Reinvent Education. His vision of a "global classroom" will, I believe, be the roadmap for the future of education. This month, Wired published The Stanford Education Experiment Could Change Higher Learning Forever detailing when the university offered free classes online.

What's so great about Christianity

Why should this direct you to follow a religion though, and why Christianity specifically.

That is an excellent question, one that every Christian should be able to answer, but we aren't always ready to answer when asked.

What you label a stone age myth is a current day reality for me and all Christians.

Peace be with you.
