Just wanted to be the first to post in the forum. So, whatta ya think of the new website design? Very orange, isn't it?

I like orange. Yum.

So, how's the podcast treatin' ya? You dig so far? You think it's lame? Either way, let us know....

Open Source

Being free does not make a piece of software open source. There are plenty of applications that are free, that are not open source.
The base definition of open source software is :
Software in which the programing source code is available for download, and the license associated with the source code allows for modification and re-distubution.

I enjoy your podcasts very much. I wish you all would make one on more technical aspects of the web like RSS, code, etc. But that's just me.
I can't listen to many of the other tech/dev podcasts because it's like a lady being in the men's locker room. (Their behaviour and language is highly offensive.)

However, I would like to invite you to read my podcast reviews, I plan to write up your show soon. http://webmonkey.wordpress.com
Again Thanks,
technology and faith

I'm enjoying the podcast...listened with my 10 year old son today and we especially enjoy the geeky humor (like the theme song!!!).

I'm very fascinated with the topic of faith and technology and the interaction of the two. I've been a believer for 39 years and have worked with and on computers for 30 years. (My dad bought us a TRS-80 when they first came out...I was a freshman in high school) and am employed as a Software Engineer.

I'd love to hear about other resources for God geeks...websites, books, blogs, other podcasts. For instance C. S. Lewis' Science Fiction trilogy feeds both my geeky side and my spiritual side which makes them a big hit with me!!! Is there someone out there who is writing christian geek fiction today???

Loved your discussion about Galileo, that was super cool! I'd love to hear more about other believer geeks from the past.

Also, it would be really sweet if you guys could do some interviews with some of the prominent (or not so prominent) believer geeks out there in the geek community. One I'm especially thinking of is Larry Wall (http://www.wall.org/~larry/), the creator of perl.

Nice podcast ... I like the CMS references

Hello gentlemen. I have listened my way through each of your podcasts, and find them entertaining and informative. I admit to being crestfallen Joomla isn't your CMS of choice, as it is mine, but hey, I am forgiving. Drupal looks cool too.

Keep it up, good work. One thing which I would be interested in, for a future topic, is how your audiences or yourselves manage a sermon podcast. My church has about 20 episodes so far, and the workflow is pretty labor intensive ... we:
1) record directly from the synthesizer to a PC as a wav file for archival purposes.
2) compress as mp3.
3) upload to ftp server.

I disagree with the Pope...isn't all of nature the work of God??? I think investigating all of the universe, past, present and future is awesome, but I think we need to clearly understand the difference between the facts and the interpretation of the facts.

And, not as clearly religious:

October Sky - Excellent story, awesome homemade rockets!!! (The book was even better!)

A Beautiful Mind - Amazing story of the Math genius John Nash (Also excellent book!)

Searching for Bobby Fischer - Chess!!! Does it get any geekier???!!!

Love the show!
Jus wondering if you could place an episode number at the beginning of the .mp3 file name.
The issue for me is this:
I listen on my HP iPaq PDA and in file explorer this only displays the beginning of each file name, so for example I get lots of
"Websites in M..."
It would be great to have G&G12 Websites...
just my 2c worth,

Standalone CD burner for sermon recording?

Hello gentlemen. A few podcasts back I remember a suggestion to use a standalone CD burner to record directly from the synthesizer(?) to a CD, without using a computer or mp3 player. It sounds ideal, but I've searched a while, and don't see any still being sold. Also, I am wondering if audio files so recorded are easily editable, as I've seen reference to Macrovision copy protection, and non-standard/expensive CDs which need to be used. Any helpful hints?

Cheers,
Terry.

Free software and the Church

I'm a huge fan of Free/Open Source software. I run Linux everywhere all the time. That said, I'm not opposed to commercial, proprietary software -- I'm not one of those Linux zealots.

But, I have a question: Should the Church be using Free/Open Source software where it's applicable, and when it does the job? (Not trying to force the proverbial square peg into the triangular hole.)

To me, it seems, we should be using OpenOffice.org instead of paying for Microsoft Office. To me, trying to be a good steward, I see no point in paying the "Microsoft tax" for Windows, when Linux does and provides 100% of what 95% of people need.

Out Calling Applications in Ministry (i.e. Phonetree)

I would like to get some feedback from everyone on the use of out calling applications in ministry. How popular are they? What applications are being used? What are people's experiences with them?

My church recently purchased Phonetree to send out voice notifications and it got me thinking. By day I develop voice applications using the open source PBX Asterisk. As I was working, I realized that it would not be hard for me to develop a open source out calling application based on Asterisk. With trixbox.org making a complete Asterisk install very easy, I think an application like this could be very usable in ministry.

Will replacing the battery work?
