Motorola Droid Goes On Sale

One of the most anticipated smartphones to launch this year, the Motorola Droid has gone on sale in the US today, the Motorola Droid.

The Motorola Droid features a 3.7 inch, 16:9 touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 854, on top of that there is a 5 megapixel camera with 4x zoom, autofocus and a dual LED flash.

The Motorola Droid is now available from Verizon for $199.99 which includes a $100 mail in rebate, with a two year contract, there are also 12 month contract available, and the Motorola Droid will set you back $269.99 on that contract.

As well as the Motorola Droid, the new HTC Droid Eris is also available from today from Verizon for $99.99.

8GB iPhone 3GS Coming to AT&T For Christmas?

The latest Apple [AAPL] rumor doing the rounds is that AT&T are going to be selling an 8GB version of the iPhone 3GS just before Christmas.

Currently the only 8GB iPhone available is the 3G, and the iPhone 3GS is available in 16GB and 32GB version, by launching an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $99, AT &T may be able to get customers who would have been interested in the new $99 DROID Eris.

As usual with all Apple rumors, it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, mind you the BGR usually gets these things right so who knows, we may see a $99 8GB iPhone 3GS on AT&T before Christmas.

Google [GOOG] has launched a new service called Google Dashboard, which is designed to provide users of Google services with great transparency and control over their own data.

Google Dashboard basically shows you all the data that Google holds for the various Google services you use, like Gmail, Google Calendar, Web History, YouTube, Gtalk and lots more, check out the video below which explains how Google Dashboard works.

Quirky’s Beamer iPhone Case

The latest creation from the guys over at Quirky, is the Beamer iPhone Case, which features a built in LED light that can be used as a flash for your iPhone’s camera or as a torch.

The Beamer iPhone Case is made from hard durable plastic and it snaps together in a two piece design, it features a built in battery and a button which you press to turn on the light, if you press it once the light will stay on for 10 seconds, which is just enough time to take a photo, if you press the button twice, it will stay on indefinitely.

Beamer’s super bright LED is powered by its own battery (residing on the inside of the case) so it does not drain any of your iPhones battery. And not to worry, the button is set in a groove to avoid being accidentally turned on when in your pocket thus keeping the battery alive as long as possible.

The Beamer iPhone Case will be available in a range of funky colors, and is available to pre-order for $32 from Quirky.

Dell Adamo XPS Gets Official

Dell has been teasing us with photos of the new Adamo XPS for a while now, they have now officially launched it and the specifications look pretty impressive.

The Dell Adamo XPS is according to Dell, the world;s thinnest PC laptop, measuring just 9.9mm thick, making it considerably thinner than the 16.4mm of the previous Adamo.

It weighs in at just 1.44kg and measure 340 x 273.9mm, although it is ultra thin, the Dell Adamo XPS doesn’t skimp on specifications, with a 1.4GHz Intel ULV processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 128GB solid state drive (SSD).

The Dell Adamo XPS features a 13.4 inch HD display with a resolution of 1,366 x 728, it also has two USB 2.0 ports, a headphone jack and a mini display port.

Battery life comes in at just 2.5 hours on the standard battery, and 5 hours on the extended battery, pricing starts at $1,799 which makes it quite expensive compared to the ultra thin MacBook Air.

Dell haven’t given an specific release date, but the Dell Adamo XPS is expected to go on sale before Christmas.

Here is a cool design for a geeky coffee table from designer Stephane Perruchon.

The PS3 Coffee Table features two gigantic PS3 controllers for legs and a glass top, the giant controllers are made from ABS plastic and the decorated with PS3 buttons.

Sadly it looks like it is just a design concept and you wont be able to buy one, cool design though, an Xbox 360 version would be cool as well or what about a retro NES version.

The Verizon LG Chocolate Touch features a touchscreen LCD display, plus a 3.2 megapixel camera with built in digital zoom, plus a range of software editing features.

Equipped with patented Dolby Mobile, the Chocolate Touch brings a dramatically richer listening experience with its potent bass and sparkling clarity, making it the perfect companion for music lovers.

Other specification include an FM radio with 12 presets, plus access to a range of social networking sites which include Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.

Namco and Zippo have teamed up to launch a range of classic video game themed lighters.

The Namco Classic Video Game Lighters come in four different styles, so there is bound to be one to suit every video game fan out there.

The versions available include Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Xevious an Galaxian, they are only available in Japan at the moment, although a company called NCSX is selling them for $108.90 each.

Toshiba Launches 320GB 1.8 Inch Hard Drive

Toshiba has announced a new 1.8 inch hard drive, which comes with a massive 320GB and is the world’s largest 1.8 inch hard drive.

The Toshiba MK3233GSG 1,8 inch hard drive features a 3GBps SATA interface, with a 16MB buffer, and have a 19% energy efficiency improvement over previous models.

Improvement of the MK3233GSG family’s perpendicular magnetic recording head and the disk’s magnetic layer secure an areal density of 801Mbit/mm² (516Gbpsi), the industry’s highest^[2] for 1.8-inch HDDs. The new drives position Toshiba to provide manufacturers of PCs and peripheral equipment with thin and light solutions offering the industry’s largest storage density in a 1.8-inch form factor. They also deliver highly efficient power consumption, high-level durability and quiet seek operation.

Equipped with a serial ATA interface, 5,400 RPM rotational speed and a large capacity 16MB buffer memory, Toshiba’s MK3233GSG HDDs are ideal for notebook PC applications that require high storage capacity and high speed processing. The areal density improvement allows MK3233GSG to boost internal data transfer rates by 15% from the MK2529GSG, the company’s earlier 250GB 1.8-inch HDD.

There is no word on pricing or availability as yet, although Toshiba have said that they will begin production of the new hard drives in December.

As well as announcing the new Droid Eris, Verizon also announced today a new BackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry Curve 8530.

The BlackBerry Curve 8530 features a full QWERTY keyboard with a touch sensitive track pad, 256 MB of flash memory and a 528 MHz processor, it also has Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi and 3G.

Othere specification include GPS, a 2,0 megapixel camera with built in digital zoom for recording video and taking pictures, an advanced media player for music, pictures and video, with dedicated media keys and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The Verizon BlackBerry Curve 8530 Smartphone will be available from the 20th of November for $99 with a 24 month contract after a $100 mail in rebate, it will come in a choice of two colors, black and smoky violet.

The idox Traveler series range of cases are designed to be used as a case for your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPod Nano, and also a stand so you can watch your favourite movies whilst you are on a plane or a train, or even sat at your desk.

While in the idox, you can easily display photos, watch movies, make speakerphone calls, use your device as an alarm clock or even read recipes in the kitchen. All buttons and ports on your device remain accessible, so you can still easily charge, pause, turn off and control the volume. When not in use, the idox can be snapped shut for full protection of your device.

These look like a great idea, especially if you want to watch a movie on a plane, I think I maye have to invest in one of these.

Verizon has officially announced its latest Google Android powered mobile phone, the Verizon DROID Eris, which is due to launch this week the same time as the much anticipated Motorola DROID.

The Verizon Droid Eris is basically Verizon’s version of the HTC Hero, it has a couple of design differences, but the majority of the features are the same.

The Verizon DROID Eris features a 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen display, a 5 megapixel camera, built in WiFi, a microSD card slot which can take up to 16GB cards and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

On top of that, the Verizon DROID Eris also features Bluetooth, a full HTML browser with Flash Lite, a digital compass, voice dialling, GPS, plus supports for a range of Google services.

The Verizon DROID Eris will be available from Verizon, tomorrow November the 6th for $99 with a two year contract after a $100 mail in rebate.

Check out these fun OS calculators from the guys over at Mint Pass, although they are just designs, they do look like fun.

Both of these fun calculators are based on Windows and Mac OS, and as you can see from the photos they are designed to look like the calculators in both operating systems.

Personally I think these look really cool, and would love one on my desk, sadly we will probably never see them being sold as the chances of Apple or Microsoft licensing them are pretty slim.

Sony Updates Vaio P Netbooks

Sony has updated its range of Vaio P netbooks, the new models now come with a choice of Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional plus a new range of Intel Atom processors.

The base model comes with a 1.33GHz Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM and am 80GB hard drive, a built in 3G modem and GPS, this model retails for the same as before at $850.

The next model in the Vaio P range features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD, plus a built in 3G modem and GPS, it will retails for $1,000.

The top end model comes with a 2GHz Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, plus built in GPS and a 3G modem, this one sells for $1,900, and all models should be available by the end of November.

Sony Updates Vaio P Netbooks

Latest Snow Leopard 10.6.2 Build Adds Back Support For Intel Atom’s

We told you a few days ago that the latest build of Snow Leopard 10.6.2 had blocked support for Intel Atom PCs, this meant that anyone using a Hackintosh netbook wouldn’t be able to update to the latest version.

Good news for all the Hackintosh fans out there, the latest build now supports Intel Atom CPUs.

The latest version is 10.6.2 10c535, so hopefully when Snow Leopard 10.6.2 goes live it will still have support for Intel’s Atom CPUs, although knowing Apple they may have changed things by then.

Following on from the Olympus PEN EP-1, Olympus has added a new Micro Four Thirds camera to its range, the Olympus PEN E-P2.

The Olympus PEN E-P2 adds a few features over the EP-1, which include Olympus’s new VF-2 viewfinder, it comes with a 12.3 megapixel Live MOS sensor, with image stabilization and dust reduction, and an ISO range up to 6400.

The Olympus PEN E-P2 features manual control over aperture and exposure settings, and it can record video in 720p at 30fps, it also features AF tracking, and 8 different art filters.

It will go on sale in December with the choice of two lenses, either an ED 14-42mm f3.5/5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom lens, or a 17mm f2.8 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens, both models will retail for $1,100.

Rolling R1 Radio Concept

We have featured a few different radio which unique way to control them. Like the Rolling Cube Radio but this innovative concept for blind people designed by South Korean-born Il-Gu Cha allows you to adjust the volume and tuning by rolling the radio backwards and forwards and left to right.

An analog radio is one of most important product for a blind people. In the using a behavior of how people manipulated rather than burying all of interaction in to the product. So adjusting radio to the right station would require a new kind of manipulation rather than simply tuning a knob.

‘R1’ has designed for them to control the radio more intuitively. By using a wheel structure user can control the radio by physical movement. The ‘R1’ allowed users to turn gadget on or off and to control volume and tuning simply by physically rolling the radio forward, backward and sideways.

Functionally, by using bevel gear system, I could increase a tuning range more than four times wider than before. There were too many channels in a narrow display before.

The Secret Knock Detecting Door Lock

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could just knock on your front door, and have it open automatically without having to fumble around with your keys, then you might need one of these Secret Knock Detecting Door Lock’s which was made using an arduino, a motor and a piezo sensor.

Check out the video of it in action below, if someone just knocks on your door, it wont open, but if the use the secret knock which can be programmed into the gadget, the door will automatically unlock.

Apple [AAPL] has announced that there are now more than 100,000 apps available to download to the iPhone and iPod Touch from the iTunes App store.

iPhone and iPod Touch users are download apps at the rate of about 10,000 per day, which is pretty impressive, and it shows just how popular the app store and the iPhone and iPod Touch platforms have become.

The App Store, now with over 100,000 applications available, is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The iPhone SDK created the first great platform for mobile applications and our customers are loving all of the amazing apps our developers are creating.”

“The App Store has forever changed the mobile gaming industry and continues to improve,” said Travis Boatman, vice president of Worldwide Studios, EA Mobile. “With a global reach of over 50 million iPhone and iPod touch users, the App Store has allowed us to develop high quality EA games that have been a huge success with customers.”

Apple have said that they are continually working on the app store to improve search and add new features like Genius for apps, just a couple of months ago Apple reached two billion downloads from the apps store, I am sure they are bound to hit three billion downloads quite soon.

Unfortunately the Beatles Albums still aren’t available on iTunes, but now you can grab them in digital format as Apple Corps and EMI are releasing the whole catalogue of Beatles Albums on a limited edition USB drive.

There will be 30,000 of the Beatles USB Drives available, and it features the 14 Beatles Albums which have all been digitally remastered, as well as 13 mini documentary films, plus album art, and some rare photos.

The Beatles Limited Edition USB Drive comes with 16GB of storage, and the music is provided in FLAC 44.1 Khz 24 bit and MP3 320 Kbps, it is compatible with both PCs and Mac.

Here is a fun DIY project if you have some spare cassette tapes lying around, the DIY Mixtape MP3 Player.

The DIY Mixtape MP3 Player was made by Justin Cole who decided he wanted to place an MP3 player inside and old cassette tape.

My new design uses a small mp3 player that I disassembled and placed inside a cassette tape adapter for an ipod.

This allows for mp3’s to be played back through a tapedeck. This has all of the ease and technology of an mp3 player with the retro coolness of a mix tape.

We have seen quite a few different clocks made from recycled parts here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is this cool The Bike Wheel Clock.

This funky recycled clock was made from an aluminum wheel of a road bike, and it can be mounted directly on to your wall to give the illusion that it is floating off the wall.

The clock movement is a high torque German quartz movement and is attached to a set of rear cassette gears to conceal the movement. The movement is attached to the wheel by hanging it off of a screw coming out of the hub, and runs on 1 AA battery, included.

The Bike Wheel clock was available for $119 from Etsy, sadly it looks like this one has sold, I am sure if you want one the seller will probably have more for sale soon.

Super Talent has launched the worlds first USB 3.0 thumb drive, the Super Talent RAIDDrive, which features some impressive read and write speeds.

The Super Talent RAIDDrive can read data at up to 200MB/s with a regular legacy BOT driver and can reach speeds up to 320MB/x with A UASP driver (USB Attached SCSI).

The Super Talent RAIDDrive comes with 64GB of storage, and filling it up would take around just 3 minutes, as opposed to about 26 minutes using USB 2.0.

Unfortunately there is no word on pricing, but it will be available in a range of sizes including 32GB, 64GB and 128GB, and it will go on sale in December.

Nokia and the Carphone Warehouse have teamed up and are launching a new range of mobile phones, the Nokia Illuvial Pink Collection.

The Nokia Illuvial Pink Collection features three Nokia Handsets, all of which feature a unique design with pink graphics on a white or black background, and they are designed to make a fashionable alternative to some of Nokia’s most popular handsets.

The first model in the range is the Nokia 5530 Xpress Music Illuvial, which features a bright white exterior with pink graphics and accents, and it allows you to select 20 friends as favourites and display all their recent communications from social media.

There is also a direct link to social media sites, including Facebook and Twitter, and there are also built in instant messaging features with services like Windows Live Messenger.

The Nokia 5530 Xpress Music Illuvial can store up to 12,000 of your favourite tracks and play them through the Nokia Stereo Headset or through the built in stereo speakers.

Next up is the Nokia 6700 Illuvial which features a black design with pink accents and graphics, it has a range of features including a built in web browser and a five megapixel camera.

A company called Litl has launched a new netbook called the The Litl Webbook, although the design is slightly different than the standard netbooks that have been available, as it can be used as a standard netbook or the screen can be flipped over and it can be used as a TV device with an optional remote.

The Litl Webbook features a 12 inch LCD display, and it is powered by an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor, it comes with 1GB of RAM and 2GB of built in flash storage, plus a GPU which can playback H.264 in 720p.

There is also a built in web camera and microphone, and there is no hard drive inside the Litl Webbook, all your data is stored on the Intenet and it also has built in WiFi, a headphone port, HDMI and a USB 2,0 port.

“As everything from music and photos to email and social networking moves online, it’s clear that the web is transforming personal computing. A developer called Zodttd is working on an N64 emulator for the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 3Gs might just have enough power to run N64 games, and according to the developer it will only work on the iPhone 3GS and latest iPod Toich, which have the GPU and CPU and OpenGLES 2.0 support.

Some of the high end N64 titles might not run on the emulator, as the developer hasn’t decided how the controls are going to work for various games.

It certainly will be interesting to see how it turns out once it has been developed, it would be great to play N64 games on the iPhone.

3D Optical Film

3M has developed an optical film which allows them to create 3D LCD panels that can be viewed without the need for 3D glasses.

The optical film has lenses on one side and a prism structure on the rear to reflect the images and create the 3D effect.

When fitted to a mobile device the 3D effect can be turned on and off to allow for normal use when you need to read text or similar.

3M has already produced a 9-inch and 2.8-inch LCD prototype panels and the company has suggested that it is gearing up production for the mass market.

We’ve featured a few environmentally friendly cardboard PC cases here on Geeky Gadgets but this paper laptop defiantly could have a future with the price of components dropping and OLED screens in the near future. Who would have thought 10 years ago that we would now have disposable phones.

This innovative design by Je Sung Park is made from pulp and reprocessed materials.

Using paper as the case also allows for endless customization options, however there is still the electronics and screen to dispose of which can contain harmful chemicals. Which hasn’t really been covered in the designers explanation. Let hope maybe in the future even the electronics will be made from easily recycled materials.

Check out this awesome hand and wrist mounted DIY flame thrower. Designed and created by Everett Bradford’s his “Prometheus Device” is fashion on the X-mens Pyro ability to create fire from thin air. Everett’s device doesn’t do it quiet from thin air but its fantastic never the less.

Using a deflection sensor in the device allows the user to control the flow of the butane and propane mix which create the flames. To ignite the gases the flame thrower uses an arc generator which send a spark across the users palm which ignites the gases.

At Noon EST, 5 PM GMT, I will be making it sn0w, and I’m looking to see “#blacksn0w” trending. blacksn0w is the unlock for the latest 05.11.07 baseband, and will also enable official tethering. blackra1n, a jailbreak for 3.1.2, has been updated to RC3, with hacktivation support, 15 second speed improvement, Tiger+PPC support, and installation of the latest blackra1n.app.

In order to use Blacksn0w you will need to first jailbreak your iPhone using Blackra1n, which you can download at the link below.

Once your iPhone is Jailbroken, the blacksn0w icon will appear on your iPhone and you will be able to unlock it.

Amphibious RC Car

We have seen quite a few remote controlled vehicles here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one looks like it might be the coolest so far, the Amphibious RC Car.

The G-Bound was revealed during the Tokyo Toy Show this summer and it’s finally out in the Japanese shops at 13.000 yen (~100 euro/$150) It’s produced by CCP , a sub-brand of the Japanese toy giant BANDAI, and has a re-chargable battery pack and a 27 MHz radio. Thanks to a waterproof body and inflatable tires (usually RC car tires are not inflatable) it’s an amphibious vehicle that can be used everywhere, even on water!!

Sadly it looks like it is only available in Japan at the moment, lets hope we see these in the US and Europe as they look like a lot of fun.
