It’s a small, highly focused app that lets you quickly, easy mark up images with arrows and boxes. The intended purpose is to take screenshots and callout graphical glitches, typos, and any other visible errors, and then report them back to the developer and/or designer so they can get fixed. Here’s how Arment describes is on Marco.org:

Bugshot’s sole purpose is dealing with those screenshots better: being a home for them, making it easier to find them (rather than browsing your entire Camera Roll, interspersed with photos), and making it fast and easy to draw big orange annotations on them so it’s clear what needs attention.

In a double dose of irony, the Bugshot icon is itself the result of an early Core Graphics glitch, and the grid Arment superimposes on screenshots doesn’t properly fill the screen in landscape mode. The former isn’t going anywhere, but the latter will be fixed in the upcoming Bugshot 1.0.1 update.

Using Bugshot is straightforward. On launch, it accesses the camera roll and ingests all the screenshots you’ve taken on your iPhone or iPad, and it’ll actively monitor for new ones and add them while the app is running as well (in case you want to Bugshot the Bugshot). Scrolling performance in the photo picker still seems a bit rough, and there’s no status bar (or emulation, Twitterrific 5-style) to tap to get taken back to the top. However, the way it shows landscape screenshots in landscape is clever.

Tap the screenshot you want to annotate and it zooms up to fill the screen, including a delightful rotation if its in a different orientation. An iOS 7-style menu bar sits on top that you can use to cancel out, switch between arrow and box drawing modes, and share. You can show or hide it with a tap. When it’s shown, a clever grid overlay covers the screenshot so, if you get distracted and come back, you won’t mistakenly think you’re looking at the actual app and not just a sceenshot. While the screenshot zooms in to fill the screen, if you cancel out it doesn’t zoom back to its place on the image grid. It zooms generically back out to the center of the screen and fades away. It’s a small thing, but it breaks the symmetry of the animation and the spatiality of the app, especially considering it’s otherwise spot-on iOS 7 look and feel. That might be too much work to implement on the current iOS 6 version, however.

Once you have your screenshot, just tap and drag to draw arrows and boxes to your heart’s – or bug’s – content. You can touch, hold, and move arrows and boxes around. It’s non-destructive for as long as you’re still working on an image, so you can layer elements one on top of the other and later un-layer them. However, you can’t rotate or scale them. Once an element is drawn, it’s done. Unfortunately, you don’t seem to be able to undo or delete them either, so if you make frequent mistakes – like I do – you’re left to cancel the entire markup and start over. Maybe a shake-to-undo and toss-offscreen to delete function would work here? Also, bigger arrows and boxes come with thicker heads and lines, so if you want to connect something across the screen, you’re getting a fat element, not just a long one. At smaller sizes this type of scaling makes a ton of sense. At larger sizes, locking the thickness and simply extending the shape might work better lest they blot out the screen.

There’s no ability to add text to the markup yet, which is a traditional feature in apps like Bugshot. Hopefully that gets added in the future, but in the meantime you can add a note to the email or message you send with the bugshot.

Speaking of which, when you’re done marking up the screenshot, tap the action button to send the final image by Mail, Messages, Twitter, or Facebook, or save it to the Camera Roll, assign it to a Contact, Copy it to the clipboard, or Print it.

That’s it. In, (mark)up, out. Like Napkin for OS X and Skitch, the utility of Bugshot is in its speed.

Thanks to its look, Bugshot feels right at home on iOS 7 already (and performs, perhaps, even better there than it does on older versions). So if you’re working on a new app or update, or helping beta test one, Bugshot could come in really handy. Hell, if you have any picture you want to quickly, easily add orange/red arrows and boxes to, Bugshot should be your go to (insert your own celebrity candid jokes here).

Arment called Bugshot a “few days project” on Twitter. What Arment can achieve in a few days, in terms of functionality and polish, focus and restraint, is a testament to his skill in craft. If he has a few more days to spare, and can iron out

$0.99 – Download now

Powered by Mobile News

Read the rest of Marco Arment releases Bugshot for iOS, small app to quickly callout glitches of any size |
© posted by ryan for Mobile News, 2013. | One comment

Apps of the week: Warhammer Quest, Mapplore, Steam Mobile and more!

iPhone, iPad & iPod

Steam Mobile

TV

Warhammer Fantasy

Warhammer Quest

It’s that time again, the time of the week when the iMore team shares with you some of their most used apps from the past seven days. This week we’ve got a good spread, with a few games partnered by a couple of travel tools, a note taking app, a gaming tool and a great app for getting video from your iPhone to the TV. Let’s take a look!

Warhammer Quest – Joseph Keller

Warhammer Quest is a top-down, turn-based dungeon crawler taking place in the Warhammer Fantasy setting. You control a party of adventurers traversing dungeons and caves, fighting monsters and collecting loot along the way. You take a turn moving each of your adventurers, either advancing them through the area or attacking enemies. Once a party member attacks, they can’t move any more that turn. Move through the dungeon until it is clear to collect your reward. Each party member has different abilities to aid in the adventure. Warriors are great with swords, axes and hammers, while wizards use different spells to help allys and defeat enemies. Use the map view to travel to different dungeons and towns. Towns let you buy new items, along with selling those that you find on your travels. You can also find different quests in towns, as well as level up your party members after they gain enough experience. If you’re a fan of Warhammer Fantasy or dungeon crawlers in general, Warhammer Quest is worth a look.

$4.99 – Download Now

MappLore – Ally Kazmucha

Summer is a time that a lot of people do some traveling. The Steam summer sale is on, which is gamer code for “it’s time to empty your wallet.” Lots of Mac and PC games are on sale for ridiculous savings. For example, I just snagged a $40 game, X-Com, for $10. Steam Mobile on iOS lets you keep tabs on those limited-time flash sales, see what’s new today, add games to your wishlist, and fill up your cart and check out. There are also the usual social tools there, so you can see which new games your buddies are picking up. The summer sale is also taking full advantage of Steam’s new card system, ultimately leading up to some unique achievements.

Free – Download Now

NoteSuite for Mac – Peter Cohen

Designed to work hand-in-hand with the Notesuite application for iPad, NoteSuite for Mac is a turbocharged note-taking app that also provides to-do management, web page clipping and document organization. The built-in to do manager lets you set reminders, due and start dates and more. Web pages can be saved, along with PDFs, MS Office files, images and more, with complete search functions. For a fraction of the cost of the same game for Wii or Xbox 360, you can get Zumba on your iPad and take it with you wherever you go. Featuring superstar Zumba instructors Beto Perez, Gina Grant, and Kass Martin as well as chart topping hits and Zumba original tracks, you can follow along with pre-programmed classes or create your own workout with combinations of routines. Motion tracking technology ensures you get the most out of your workout, and you will stay motivated with the Progress Tracker that helps you create fitness goals and tracks your calorie burn. Well, that’s according to my 9 year old son who has taken to playing the rooftop run game starring them. Having played a bit of the game myself, I can say it’s certainly a bit of fun for adults and children alike though some adults may find the graphics a little on the subpar side. Kids however don’t really care about that stuff and in this case TMNT: Rooftop Run is a pretty decent pick for them and it’s available for free. Watch those in-app purchases though. The idea is to run across rooftops to collect coins and beat up bad guys but your bank account might end up with far fewer coins should someone grab that $50 level-up I saw available for purchase.

Free – Download Now

Air Video – Rene Ritchie

It’s that time of year again – the summer holidays where I end up visiting family members who still haven’t joined the HDTV age. That’s right, they’re still using the giant CRT screen with nothing by way of inputs other than coaxial cable, RCA jacks, and a dream. Since I pretty much live off streaming to Apple TV, and that requires HDMI, it’s difficult to share the movies and TV shows I want to share with them.

Enter Air Video. It’s an iOS app you buy and run on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, as well as a server app you run on your computer. What Air Video does so well is take any video file you have on your computer, transcode it on the fly, and play it on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. MKV, AVI, Xvid, X264, it really doesn’t care. It just plays them. If you have a modern HDTV with an Apple TV, it can AirPlay right to it, so you’re good to just load and go.

If you have an older TV, however, you need to get a little more creative. Here’s what I did: I took an old iPod touch, an old Apple Dock to video cable, loaded Air Video on the iPod touch, plugged the cable between the iPod touch and old TV, and that’s it.

Sure, you have to get up and manually choose what you want to play on the iPod touch – there’s no remote – but that’s a small price to pay for getting your new video on an old TV.

Air Video can even handle DRM’d iTunes video – which most of mine is now – by punting it to Safari on the iOS device. As long as you’re logged into your iTunes account, it almost always works great. Well, except for that retro 4:3 aspect ratio, but vacationers can’t be choosers…

$2.99 – Download now

Travel List – Richard Devine

I’d forget my head if it weren’t firmly attached to my shoulders, and so when I’m packing for a trip I need to keep track of what I need to pack, and what I have actually packed. Since I also lose pieces of paper with lists on, an iOS app is a much better solution for me. Travel List is an extremely simple app, that looks great, and helps you keep track of what you’re packing.

You create a list by trip, and then pre-built into the app is a huge list of items in different categories that you might need to pack. If it’s not there, not a problem, just add it in yourself into the relevant category or create a new one. You also get to add quantities of each item, set reminders for items and on the iPhone, add your trip itinerary too. It really does cover all the bases. Sometimes, it’s the simplest apps that do the best job, and Travel List is one of those.

$1.99 – Download Now

Powered by Mobile News

Read the rest of Apps of the week: Warhammer Quest, Mapplore, Steam Mobile and more! |
© posted by ryan for Mobile News, 2013. | No comment

ReadKit for Mac gets even better with added Feedly support

iPhone, iPad & iPod

Google Reader

Mac App Store

RSS

ReadKit for Mac is one of the best RSS reading clients money can buy for the Mac, and the latest update consolidates that further by adding support for Feedly. In the post-Google Reader world, Feedly quickly emerged as a leading contender to step into the limelight. Their subscriber numbers rocketed following Google’s shutdown announcement, but while iOS apps are starting to pick up the Feedly API, it’s still a little sparse on the Mac front outside using a web client. Until now.

Popular RSS app Reeder has seen itself removed from the Mac App Store until alternative, non-Google, providers are implemented, and so ReadKit is definitely edging ahead. You need a Feedly account before using the app though, there’s no options to sign up from within. After that, you’re good to go. Grab the latest version from the Mac App Store now, and if you’ve come across using Feedly, how are you finding it?

$4.99 – Download Now

Powered by Mobile News

Read the rest of ReadKit for Mac gets even better with added Feedly support |
© posted by ryan for Mobile News, 2013. | No comment

Is AirDrop in iOS 7 lacking without integration with AirDrop for Mac? So, is it lacking something without this? AirDrop on Mac is something I use all the time on my own machines to throw stuff between them, and I’m pretty happy with how it works. AirDrop on iOS 7 sounds like the same exact great system, but limited to use between iOS devices. That’s great, and all, but wouldn’t it be even better if you could AirDrop things from your iPhone over to your Mac?

I’m firmly in the ‘yes’ camp on this one. When the rumors first emerged that AirDrop would be a part of iOS 7, my first question was; “will it let me send stuff to my Mac?” The problem with moving things to and from an iOS device with a Mac is still iTunes. You still have to be connected – even wirelessly – to iTunes to move things across. Getting files to and from apps is more involved than it really should be, and even though iCloud takes away some of the pain, it doesn’t let you have the actual files.

OK, so a large number of iOS users also use a Windows PC, or a Linux box, or a Chromebook, and so they’re not likely interested in this at all. But, AirDrop is an Apple thing. Sure, it’s wireless transfer at the end of the day, but Apple doesn’t need to worry about making it work with anything other than the Mac. So, why not? What do you guys think? Happy enough just sending things between iOS devices, or like me, do you long for something more? Sound off in the comments below!

More: iOS 7 preview: AirDrop

Powered by Mobile News

Read the rest of Is AirDrop in iOS 7 lacking without integration with AirDrop for Mac? It’s a straight-to-TV shark flick starring Ian Ziering and Tara Reid – needing the work, possibly? – that sees a massive tornado that hits Los Angeles throwing a ton of huge, vicious sharks in to the city streets. I know, right? Truth is, it’s pretty sucktastic; so bad it’s actually pretty awesome.

After all that, you’re probably hungry for some more shark filled action, and the good news is iTunes has you covered! So, here’s a selection of the great – and the not so great – shark movies you can rent or buy from the iTunes store this weekend. We accept no responsibility for the quality of some of these movies, but hey, they’re still pretty fun, and some even have girls in bikinis! It’s available for download from the App Store.

The app, which is iPhone and iPod touch-native, lets you order products ranging from electronic accessories like an MP3 player shaped like a mixtape cassette to jewelry to a personalized figurine. Once you’ve selected the item you want, a “Customize” button lets you specify elements you’d like to make it unique for yourself. For example, you can select a $30 iPhone case from Sculpteo, tell it which iPhone model you’re using, create a signature, customize the pattern and identify the material you’d like to use.

There are only a few items at present, with prices ranging from less than $10 (for a plastic iPhone case) to more than $300 (for a sculpted metal ring).

Right now the app lets you order products from MakerBot, a New York-based company, Sculpteo, based in France, and Toronto’s Hot Pop Factory. Each product is shipped from each company’s 3D printer facilities.

Free – Download now

Powered by Mobile News

Read the rest of eBay Exact lets you buy customized 3D-printed products from your iOS device |
© posted by ryan for Mobile News, 2013. | One comment

Square Enix apologizes for Deus Ex jailbreak restriction, promises fix

iPhone, iPad & iPod

Apple App Store

Deus Ex

So Square Enix

Square Enix

Square Enix has apologized for preventing its recently-released action role playing game Deus Ex: The Fall from working on jailbroken iOS devices and promises an update, according to Eurogamer. Within hours of the game’s release on Wednesday, a Reddit user discovered that he couldn’t fire guns in the game on his jailbroken iOS device – an error message popped up informing him of the limitation.

No mention of this is made in the game’s release notes posted to the App Store, and Square Enix has, to date, not offered an explanation for why this restriction exists. But it’s safe to presume that it was a hamhanded attempt at piracy control, since pirates routinely jailbreak their iOS device to install pirated software.

Not all users who jailbreak their iOS devices are pirates, however – some simply want to install software that doesn’t pass muster with Apple’s App Store review team, like customization software that makes user experience changes forbidden by Apple’s licenses.

Within a day or so, players had already found a workaround for the limitation, which defeats the apparent point of the restriction. So Square Enix is backing off and will remove it in a forthcoming update.

In a statement, the company said that it had “not been clear” in communicating the restriction, so “the right thing to do” is to switch off this restriction in an update – a rather convoluted way of admitting fault.

Is Square Enix capitulating to pirates, or were they in the wrong to begin with? Are you more likely to buy Deus Ex now that this restriction has been lifted? Were you affected by it? Yet proponents of web apps have begged to differ, and sought to show that web apps could, if not today then one day, prove good enough for general purpose use. Tired of the subjective arguments, Drew Crawford has tried to present an objective analysis on Sealed Abstract:

But the real elephant in the room here is that in all these articles on this subject, rarely does anyone actually quantify how slow JS is or provide any sort of actually useful standard of comparison. (You know… slow relative to what?) To correct this, I will develop, in this article, not just one useful equivalency for JavaScript performance–but three of them. So I’m not only going to argue the “traditional hymns” of “wa wa JS is slow for arbitrary case”, but I’m going to quantify exactly how slow it is, and compare it to a wide variety of things in your real-life programming experience so that, when you are faced with your own platform decision, you can do your own back-of-the-napkin math on whether or not JavaScript is feasible for solving your own particular problem.

We spent some time debating this topic on Talk Mobile as well. As someone who distinctly remembers it taking nearly half a minute for the webOS calendar to open on my Palm Pre Plus, and the early generation of sweet iPhone apps it’s almost inconceivable to me that anyone would argue web apps, cloud-based or local, could come anywhere near native performance. As to whether they could eventually become as fast, one day, that seems like an impossible argument for anyone to make primarily because native apps show no sign of slowing down any time soon.

What can be argued, I think, is that in some cases web apps make sense despite their performance. Speed and smoothness are important elements of an app, but they’re only two elements, and in some cases other ones might take precedence. The idea of an informed trade-off makes a lot more sense to me than simply an HTML5 dream and wishing it so. An app you have to access from any device, any where, for example, makes availability more important than speed, and that’s something web apps excel at.

Anyway, at nearly 10K words, you might want to block out some time from Crawford’s piece, or InstaPockAbility it for when you do have time. If the subject of web apps vs. native code interests you, it’s well worth it.

Source: Sealed Abstract via Daring Fireball

Powered by Mobile News

Read the rest of The slow truth about web apps |
© posted by ryan for Mobile News, 2013. | No comment

OS X Mavericks Preview: Maps help you find your way, integrates with iOS

iPhone, iPad & iPod

Google Maps

Wi Fi

The Maps app in iOS is an indispensable tool, whether you’re traveling in familiar territory or exploring a new place. Now, for the first time, Maps is coming to OS X when Mavericks bows this fall. Will it keep you from getting lost?

Certainly, OS X is no stranger to map applications or web sites – almost all of us have opened up Google Maps or another similar service in our web browser, when you’re trying to find a way from Point A to Point B or anywhere in between. But Maps as a standalone application from Apple has been a no-show. That’s changing when OS X Mavericks hits the streets later this year.

Maps in Mavericks looks and acts very much like its iOS counterpart. In fact, it uses the same datasets. The difference is in the size of the screen you’re looking at it on, the speed of the network you’re downloading data from (Wi-Fi, versus whatever your cell service provider has available), and the rendering power of the computer behind it.

The three of those things combined make Maps on Mavericks a real pleasure to use. When you zoom in to an area, it very quickly renders and populates with points of interest, and it’s lightning-fast to respond to search queries too.

Opening the Maps application should look instantly familiar to anyone who’s used it on iOS. You can pinpoint your location, look at your surrounds in a 2D view, switch to 3D if you prefer, or combine satellite and 3D imagery to use the “Flyover” feature Apple pioneered in iOS 6, where cityscapes are rendered in photo-realistic 3D.

A Search field lets you find specific addresses, but it can be also used to find points of interest. So if you want to locate a restaurant, museum or shop near you, enter whatever info you’re looking to search on and Maps will try to locate something nearby.

Once you’ve plotted the location of your destination, You can add it to your Bookmarks list (synced between the maps apps of any other OS X or iOS devices connected through iCloud), get directions or add it to your Contacts database. You can also link to Yelp, if you’re interested in checking out reviews from other customers before you go.

Like Maps on iOS, Maps for Mavericks provides point to point directions, and will show you real-time traffic conditions. If traffic’s bad, Maps can suggest alternate routes. Once you’ve got your route plotted out, you can send them in a message, e-mail the information, post it to Twitter or Facebook if you’ve connected those services, add it to Contacts, bookmark it, or send it to your iPhone.

Maps also introduces some much-welcome support for mapping functions into other applications. Take Calendar, for example: Now when you type in an address for a new appointment, Calendar uses that map data to locate the address, show you a thumbnail map (which opens the Maps app) and can even pad your schedule with travel time.

Maps illustrates a couple of very important points that Apple isn’t stating directly but wants to underscore. One is that Maps integrates really well into other Mavericks apps, like Contacts and Calendar. Presumably, there will be other ways to integrate that connectivity into other apps, too, because like iOS Maps, Maps in Mavericks doesn’t directly support mass transit travel information.

Secondly, Maps does its best to erase the division between iOS and OS X. You can send map data to your phone, for example. And bookmarking a map in the Maps app will sync that bookmark to the Maps app on any other device, iOS or OS X, connected via iCloud.

Some pundits were afraid of the “iOSification” of OS X, but this proves that managed thoughtfully, Apple just makes data and applications work together regardless of platform, and that’s great for the increasing number of users who have both Macs and iOS devices, and want things to just work.

When OS X Mavericks is released, will you use the Maps app? Do you think this cross-integration between iOS and OS X is a good thing? Tell me your thoughts in the comments.
