The DC Center in collaboration with ETC invites you to attend our first event of the year, a play titled Charm on Thursday, January 26th 2017 at 8:00 PM at Mosaic Theater Company (1333 H STREET N.E., Washington, DC 20002)

The Play "Charm" is about:
Mama Darleena Andrews, a 67 year-old transgender woman and the inimitable etiquette instructor at "The Center," an organization for Chicago's homeless and LGTBQ youth. Her students are as diverse in background as they are in identity, united by a feeling of other-ness in the heart of a city that's left them behind. But for "Mama Darlin," triumph over poverty and prejudice begins with lacing up and fitting in--playing the part with class and with charm.

B'Ellana Duquesne (The T Party) stars as 'Mama,' inspired by the heartwarming true story of Chicago trans icon Miss Gloria Allen, under direction of visionary artist Natsu Onoda Power (The T Party).

Charm runs two hours and twenty minutes, with one fifteen minute intermission.
All discussions open to the public and begin immediately after the play ends.

Tickets are reserved at $15 a seat, and there will be 20 free tickets for those less fortunate.... contact shareese@thedccenter.org

A message for attendees of the Trans & GenderQueer 11/18 game night:

Last week was a wake up to all of us. Now we find ourselves with an approaching tidal wave of fear and uncertainty. We have little over two months left of an administration that has been an ally to our community. These two months are vital to protecting our individual interests.

If you are in the process of transitioning, you probably have many questions, worries, and doubts about your legal status. Will you still be able to change the gender marker on your passport? How do you change your name and gender with Social Security? Will state/district regulations for name and gender changes be affected? What about healthcare? You're not alone in your concerns.

This Friday evening, instead of our planned game night, we will be hosting a discussion that will attempt to help you answer these questions and provide you with guidance. Please come with your questions, concerns, hopes, and grievances.

We apologize for the short notice and sincerely hope that you will join us.

Where: The DC Center for the LGBT Community (2000 14 St NW, Suite 105)

National Geographic photographers have sparked change for over a century. Photographer Robin Hammond shares how platforms like Instagram are making it possible to amplify important stories and connect with audiences like never before--revolutionizing how we capture and consume world-changing photography.

Robin has been sparking change for his entire career, using his camera to record human rights and development issues around the globe through long-term photography projects. His work documenting the abuses under strongman Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe was featured in National Geographic magazine, displayed in an exhibit in Paris, and culminated in his first book, Your Wounds Will Be Named Silence. Robin has been awarded a W. Eugene Smith Fund Grant for Humanistic Photography, a World Press Photo prize, the Pictures of the Year International World Understanding Award, and four Amnesty International awards for human rights journalism.

FILM: Spectrum Shorts: Gender, Identity and Aging

WHEN: Saturday, October 15th @ 1pm

WHERE: Gala Hispanic Theatre | 3333 14th St NW

SYNOPSIS: This short film program traverses the globe to share stories by and about those of us who don't fit neatly into conventional ideas of gender, aging or identity. To assemble a program that highlights nearly every hue of the LGBTQ spectrum, we drew inspiration from the moving Brazilian short Places of Fear and Hatred; and from sexagenarian gay country singer-songwriter Patrick Haggerty, proudly "singing old songs to old people" in the delightful doc These C*cksucking Tears; from the tender slow-burn of two strangers finding common ground in Dawn; from Frances Reed, the enterprising and gender non-conforming subject of malefemale; and from the square dancers of Partners, and the seniors supporting one another in An Afternoon Knows; from an elegant lady out on the town in First Night Out, and the enduring love and partnership of Cecil & Carl. We hope you too will find insight and inspiration here.

Tickets for the screening of Spectrum Shorts can be purchased here.
