/news/news.php?uid=455

12 July 2009
Good weekend everyone!

With the announcement of the Live Box Set for release in the UK on 14 September, the US release date has been announced also. US residents can look for the box to be available on 29 September 2009, from Rhino Records. Check out a short article at Billboard.com about the US release of the box.

In other news....

GENESIS

Paul Potts, winner of Britain's Got Talent a few years back, seems to enjoy mentioning Genesis in interviews. Take a look at his most recent mention of the band at this link.

And, did you know that Genesis's band name was Biblically based? Of course you did! But, History Today has an article about band names with an historical basis, so read and learn some history from music!

PHIL COLLINS

Phil's cover version of The Beatles 'Tomorrow Never Knows' gets a glowing mention in this article about cover versions of songs that perhaps shouldn't work, but end up working very well!

PETER GABRIEL

There's a brief news item here about Peter donating a handwritten lyric sheet for 'Biko' for a charity auction.

More to come as news happens!

Following the reissue of the 14 Genesis studio albums on the stunning box-sets Genesis 1976 - 1982 and Genesis 1983 - 1998 in 2007, and Genesis 1970 - 1975 in 2008, on 14 September 2009 Virgin/EMI will release Genesis Live 1973-2007, a box-set gathering the four live albums recorded by the legendary British group from 1973 to 1992. Featuring brand new stereo mixes*, the box set also includes the long-awaited release in stereo and 5.1 of Live at the Rainbow 1973 only available with this collection.

Genesis Live 1973 - 2007 is a sumptuously presented box-set that includes:

Genesis Live, the band's first Top Ten album in the UK, recorded in Leicester and Manchester and issued in 1973, and featuring the classic line-up of Tony Banks (keyboards), Phil Collins (drums, vocals), Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute), Steve Hackett (guitars) and Mike Rutherford (bass, guitars). Genesis Live, for this box-set release, has been extended to feature 5 bonus tracks recorded at The Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles on 24 January 1975 and the full album is also presented in 5.1 for the first time.

The double set Seconds Out, a Top 5 entry in 1977 that documented the group's Paris dates as a quartet with Collins on lead vocals following Gabriel's departure in 1975. The album featured touring drummers Bill Bruford (from the 1976 shows) and Chester Thompson (who began drumming live for Genesis in 1977). Exclusively to this box-set, Seconds Out is presented in stereo and 5.1 versions.

Three Sides Live, a number 2 album in the UK in 1982, mostly showcasing the Banks-Collins-Rutherford incarnation augmented by Thompson and guitarist Daryl Stuermer.

The Way We Walk, finally sees these two live albums re-sequenced as per the original show's set list. Originally released separately and entitled Vol I: The Shorts, which made the Top 3 in Britain in 1992, and Vol 2: The Longs, this was the band's sixth number one album, and their only concert recording to top the charts in 1993.

First formed in 1967, Genesis have sold 150 million albums worldwide and have influenced the likes of Elbow, Flaming Lips and Jeff Buckley. In the early seventies, their ambition in the studio was matched by groundbreaking live shows as they presented such classic albums as Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway to audiences across Europe and the US. Following Gabriel's exit in the mid-seventies, Collins stepped up to the microphone and the group scored Top 5 albums with A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering. Hackett left in 1977 but the 'remaining three' had their first Top Ten single with 'Follow You Follow Me' and their first US Top 20 album with . . . And Then There Were Three . . . the next year. A simpler, more direct approach to songwriting worked so well that Banks-Collins-Rutherford scored consecutive number one albums with Duke, Abacab, Genesis and Invisible Touch in the eighties, and with We Can't Dance in 1991, and became a stadium act without losing any of their sophistication and attention to detail. This was evidenced again when they returned to the stage after a ten-year hiatus. When In Rome 2007, the DVD of the free concert they gave at the Circo Massimo in Rome in front of 500.000 spectators topped the DVD charts in the UK last year.

Recorded at Leicester De Montfort Hall and Manchester Free Trade Hall in February 1973, Genesis Live was not originally intended for release but rather mixed to be broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour show on US radio. It comprises versions of the dramatic set opener Watcher of the Skies and Get 'Em Out by Friday from Foxtrot, the band's fourth studio album - which had reached number 12 in October 1972 - The Return of the Giant Hogweed and The Musical Box from 1971's Nursery Cryme, the first album featuring Collins and Hackett, and the tour de force quiet-loud dynamics of The Knife, from Trespass, the group's 1970 debut for the Charisma label. Given the band's growing reputation for its theatrical shows, it is no surprise that Genesis Live spent ten weeks in the charts in 1973, paving the way for the release of Selling England by the Pound later that year. The album's iconic cover features Gabriel wearing one of his many costumes, in this case the 'Magog' mask and black cape he donned during Supper's Ready.

Bonus material includes five tracks from the celebrated concept album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, a Top Ten release at the end of 1974, recorded at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in January 1975.

Recorded at the Palais des Sports in Paris with the Manor Mobile studio in 1976 and 1977, Seconds Out stayed on the British charts for four months. The double set was much more in keeping with the times, the increasing availability of bootleg recordings and the phenomenal success of Frampton Comes Alive! Former Yes and King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford had joined Genesis for the 1976 dates and features on The Cinema Show, one of two tracks from Selling England by the Pound. The other, Firth of Fifth, and the rest of the album, features Chester Thompson, a drummer best known at the time for his work with Frank Zappa and Weather Report. Collins tackles Gabriel-era material like The Musical Box, Supper's Ready, The Carpet Crawlers, the title track from The Lamb Lives Down On Broadway, and I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe), the group's first hit, with aplomb. Squonk, Robbery, Assault & Battery, Dance on a Volcano and Los Endos came from A Trick of the Tail while Afterglow originally featured on Wind and Wuthering. Hackett left while Seconds Out was being mixed. The album's distinctive cover and the other pictures used were shot by Armando Gallo, the band's biographer.

Recorded in Germany in 1981, Three Sides Live was originally released in 1982 as a double vinyl set with a fourth side of studio recordings - basically the 3X3 EP and two B-sides - in the US while the European version contained three more extended live tracks. Hits from the group's MTV-friendly era include Mama, That's All, Invisible Touch - which charted again in its live version in 1992 - In Too Deep, Land of Confusion, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Throwing It All Away, No Son of Mine, I Can't Dance, Hold On My Heart and Jesus He Knows Me. Driving the Last Spike and Fading Lights came from We Can't Dance, Domino originally appeared on Invisible Touch and Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea on Genesis. The Old Medley rounded up nine tunes from the band's early days and Collins and Thompson's The Drum Thing did just that. Turn It On Again is exclusive to this release.

The concert from October 1973 features most of Selling England by the Pound at the time of its release, along with the conceptual piece Supper's Ready and Watcher of the Skies from their breakthrough album Foxtrot, and The Musical Box from Nursery Cryme, the last two titles on 5.1 version only. It captures the band at a crucial point in their history, before they left the Lewis Carroll-like universe of their early albums behind, before the departure of Gabriel and Hackett, before their time as ubiquitous hit-makers of the eighties.

Not a lot of news here right now. But, a little Raven told me to pass along to you all to check back here at 12:01am BST on Tuesday, 7th July for some complete news about the first live boxset... That's 7:01pm US Eastern time.

One more brief piece of news, about Peter Gabriel:

PETER GABRIEL

Peter is playing one show in the UK this year, at this summer's WOMAD festival. You can get tickets by clicking on this link.

/news/news.php?uid=452

28 June 2009
Good weekend Genesis fans!

As we get into the summer months in the northern hemisphere, news runs a bit thin on the ground, as people get into holiday mode, offices shut down, and people look to escape wherever they are, to get to wherever they are not... But, we do have some quick news items, one of which is more amusing than really news, so let's hit that first!

GENESIS

Genesis crops up in some odd places at times. The Northeast of the United States has had a lot more rain recently than is normal for this time of year, and a writer for The Trentonian, a newspaper in New Jersey, has used Genesis to comment on his feelings about how the weather gets him down. Check out the brief essay here.

I realize it is not truly 'news,' but I found it amusing, and I hope you do also...

Enjoy the rest of your week!

Phil's song 'In the Air Tonight' is getting a lot of mentions in articles surrounding the impending release of the movie 'The Hangover.' Looking to read about it? Check out articles by clicking here and here.

PETER GABRIEL

There's only a one line quote from Peter in this article, but it does touch upon the future of music downloading/streaming, so it may be of interest to music fans everywhere. The article also includes a perhaps unintentionally creepy photo of babies wearing headphones, which might be worth a look...

Watch this space for more upcoming news about future Genesis live reissues!

Have a great week!

				/news/news.php?uid=446

24 May 2009
Good Weekend Genesis Fans!

I know this weekend is a bank holiday weekend in the UK, and is Memorial Day weekend in the US, so if you have a three day weekend, I hope you are enjoying your time off, and are able to get out and spend time with those people who are important to you. Enjoy the weekend!

Thank you to all who have responded with photos to our request for photos of Genesis live throughout the ages. We have received lots of photos, and I hope that some are able to make the cut to get into the live boxes planned for release later this year. Release dates are still tentative, so we have no solid announcement of a time frame for release yet, but once the dates become more clear, we will announce the dates here.

STEVE HACKETT

There's a great new interview with Steve over at Rock Radio, where he talks about a bit of Genesis history, and the new material he is working on. Check it out!

ANTHONY PHILLIPS

Genesis-Music.com has secured an online interview with Anthony, and is looking for your questions! Submit questions for possible inclusion in the Members Forum. Thank you!

MIKE RUTHERFORD

While I believe this link may have been posted online awhile ago, it's always worth a second look, to see Mike's humour come through...

RAY WILSON

Ray will be performing in Germany quite often this summer, and this article talks about his 8 July live show. My German language skills are pretty weak, but if others out there want to check it out, you can do so by clicking here.

At this link, you'll find a brief note in Polish about Ray appearing at a Polish music festival on 24 July. If you are in the area, be sure to check his live show out, and if you want to see if he's coming to an area near you, check out his official site by clicking here.

Thanks for reading, and more to come next week!

				/news/news.php?uid=445

17 May 2009
Good weekend Genesis fans!

I hope this Sunday finds you happy and healthy, enjoying whatever the world is bringing to your doorstep today!

Today, we have a variety of quick news bits for your Genesis and Genesis related dose of knowledge, so without further ado, here we go!

GENESIS

While I don't always personally see eye to eye with some of the opinions expressed in the articles I link to here, I thought this blog/article was intriguing enough to put up here. All listenters find their own connection to music, and this writer is no exception.

PHIL COLLINS

In the 'amusing news tidbit' pile, we have this article from the Telegraph in the UK, talking about Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath fame being a Phil fan. Considering his vocals on the cover of 'Shock the Monkey' he participated in a few years back, he's probably a fan of Peter also...

PETER GABRIEL

Congratulations are due to Peter Gabriel, for he has had the honour of the Swedish Polar Music Prize (along with conductor and composer Jose Antonio Abreu). Check out some more information about the award here and here. Peter's May Full Moon Club video update can also be found on his personal site.

Enjoy the rest of the week! What Genesis have you listened to recently? If you haven't listened to any, don't you think you should?

Cheers!

Genesis-music.com sadly announces the passing of John Mayhew, drummer on the Genesis album Trespass originally released in 1970. John is pictured on the far right in the above photo.

The members of Genesis all send our deepest sympathies and condolences to John's family.

From Tony Banks:

We were very sorry to hear about the death of John Mayhew, who had only recently appeared back in our lives after over thirty years. His time with the group was short, but it was a very crucial period and his contribution was very important.
After John Silver, the drummer who had played on 'From Genesis to Revelation' decided to leave we rehearsed for a while as a four-piece before auditioning for a replacement. The trouble was we didn't have a full drum kit for them to use. I remember one poor chap having to play with the cymbals hanging from the ceiling, almost decapitating himself every time he used one. When John Mayhew arrived he had the great advantage of owning a kit as well as being a very competent drummer. At the time, one of our favourite drummers was Rob Townsend of Family, and when John showed he could reproduce a few of his riffs he was hired.
How we must have appeared to him I hate to think. We had all been to the same school so we were a very closed unit with our own language and humour, and we were very inexperienced both in the business and in life in general. John was a bit older than us and had played live in the group 'Steamhammer" so had some knowledge of what was expected on stage. I remember him at the first show changing to go on stage; this had never occurred to us, strange since later we became almost better known for Peter's costumes than anything else. For this reason he was a very important factor in those early days on the road, having already been there before.
During the few months we worked together, writing music for the 'Trespass' album, John became very much part of the group sharing everything from the legendary immortal yoghurt through to the first experience of Monty Python. His carpentry was a great asset in these early days; he built me a copy of the Leslie style speaker I had, (still in existence I think) and put a seat in the back of the bread-van we used as the group's vehicle amongst many other things. He was a very solid drummer, but not really a writer, a lot of his parts came from the rest of us, particularly from Ant. This was really why we decided that if we were to continue after Ant left, we had to find a more creative drummer, a hard decision because by this time John had become a friend.

				/news/news.php?uid=438

Hello Genesis fans!

Those of you who are eagle-eyed readers of our news page here on Genesis-Music.com may remember a few weeks ago that I posted a call for anyone with any knowledge of the location of the Genesis "Live" multitracks to please come forward. This album, the first live one in the Genesis canon, had missing multitracks, and was in danger of not being formally remixed for the upcoming Live 5.1 box set, for release in the future.

We are happy to announce that according to Nick Davis, Genesis producer extraordinaire, the "Live" multitracks have been found! As we get more details on the exact story behind the location of the tapes, we will share whatever information we can here.

But, this last hurdle has been removed to the complete remix of the official Genesis live releases. There really was much rejoicing!

Until next time...
