A couple weeks ago, I was awoken by the sound of a marching band. Being me, I jumped out of bed, grabbed my camera, and ran to catch up to them. They were a small group of about fifteen Italian musicians, roaming the streets of Mile-End, playing for people's listening pleasure.
This is really when I wish I'd had a little recorder. They were great!

The "shaka" sign is a common greeting gesture. It is often associated with Hawaii and sports such as surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, skateboarding, longboarding, skimboarding, snowboarding,Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and skydiving. It consists of extending the thumb and smallest finger while keeping the three middle fingers curled, and raising the hand as in salutation with the back of the hand facing the person that is being greeted; sometimes the hand is rotated back and forth to emphasize the sign.

Hello again! It's been a while... I've been quite busy, but have managed to take a short trip out to Nova Scotia. Here's the first of the series.
I took this just off of Lighthouse road, close to Cherry Hill.

Men at Work - Antonio

Ciao Antonio!
"Back in the day, in Italy, my grand father used to work in the mountain villages. In a backpack, he'd carry all his tools. Back then, they sharpened everything by hand. Later, when they started having cobble stone roads, my grand father and dad would pull a cart that had a peddle-powered sharpening wheel. For me, I drive this truck. I'm a third generation sharpener."
For those who live in Montreal, they may not know it, but most are familiar with Antonio's work. He's the man who diligently drives up and down Montreal streets in his big orange truck, clanging his bell as though to be calling out the knives.
"Can I take your portrait Antonio?" I ask.
"Sure, but make it quick. I've gotta get going here. Lots of work to do."

Flash Mob - Budweiser style

Stepping away from my Men at Work series, I had the opportunity to shoot a flash mob event that took place today, 12:30pm, corner of McGill College and Ste. Catherine. Pretty cool to see the hundred or so people dressed in lime green Bud shirts descend onto the street a do the twist.
Riding home on the bus though, I had a reflection... I couldn't help thinking how this was a good example of what happens when marketing companies run "astroturf events" - i.e. play on words with the grassroots movements and viral marketing we've recently been seeing. There's something scary when the old "for the people by the people" gets taken over by the corporate machine. Interesting. And this of course on the heals of the fake Bixi bloggers controversy.
Learning - always be vigilant of the purse behind the process. More than ever, we are being called upon to be critical in our media consumption. Don't let your guard down.
