Comment on 'Genetic link to ADHD' by theagingfanboy

This reads like a press-release - perhaps a little more scepticism is called for? Surely a whole 85% of children with ADHD are genetically the same as the rest of us? What's more 7% of normal children have dodgy genes lurking in their cells! There was an intersting exchange about this on the "Today" programme on Radio 4 this morning, and you can read an account about it at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/ferguswalsh/2010/09/the_genetics_of_adhd.html
A mother of a sufferer was interviewed on the same programme and told how pleased she was that the condition had been shown to be genetic. I don't think that the study has confirmed that at all.

Comment on 'Genetic mutations linked to childhood autism' by Surrey Web Design

My son has just been diagnosed as BAP (Broad Autism Phenotype - ie our whole male family line appears to show autism like characteristics) and borderline ASD, and I am sure if my father and I were to be tested we would show up plenty of these mutant genes, but I have to say we have all done pretty well in life, so unless it's core autism it's no bar to a great and good life.

Comment on 'Cascade testing programme for Familial Hypercholesterolaemia initiated across Wales ' by theagingfanboy

A very worthwhile project. It's worth enquiring about the possible effects of a positive result on people's lives. I DIDN'T inherit a problem which caused the death of my father, and yet over the years have been treated as if I did.
This year I was told by a health professional that I should be blacklisted as an insurance risk because of my father's medical history, despite not having his problem, and in fact not being dead (he died when he was ten years younger than I am now).
Hopefully this scheme will give people better treatment, but it should be in the context of not blighting their financial life. That's one big souorce of stress they could do without.

Comment on 'IVF doctors to raffle human egg' by baby2mom

Egg donation in South Africa has enforced a certain process for quite some time. These issues include the egg donor donation being limited to a marginal amount so the recruitment of egg donors is based on ultruistic reasons and motivations.

There is also an extensive availability of egg donors in South Africa and persons looking for donor eggs have access to detailed egg donor profiles and picture of egg donors.

Moreso, the cost of egg donation in South AFrica is effectively contained keeping egg donation very affordable.
