Byron Hurt is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, a published writer, and an anti-sexist activist. His most recent documentary, Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. This documentary is a riveting examination of masculinity, sexism, and homophobia in Hip-Hop culture. Delivering a self-described “loving critique” of rap music, director Byron Hurt—a star quarterback in college, longtime Hip-Hop fan, and now gender violence prevention educator—pays tribute to the power and creativity of Hip-Hop while challenging the rap music industry to take responsibility for glamorizing destructive stereotypes of manhood in general and perpetuating negative myths about African American males in particular. Critically acclaimed for its fearless engagement with issues of race and racism, gender violence, and the corporate exploitation of youth culture, this prophetic film is as entertaining as it is educational, as bold as the bravado it exposes.

The School of History, Technology, and Society is pleased to announce our Black History Month Speaker: Dr. Alondra Nelson. She is associate professor of sociology at Columbia University, where she also holds an appointment in the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. She is coeditor of Technicolor: Race, Technology, and Everyday Life and Genetics and the Unsettled Past: The Collision between DNA, Race, and History. Dr. Nelson will present a talk based upon her new book Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight Against Medical Discrimination. Her talk will address the legacy of the Black Panther Party’s commitment to community health care, a central aspect of its fight for social justice. She argues that the Party’s focus on health care was practical and ideological and that their understanding of health as a basic human right and its engagement with the social implications of genetics anticipated current debates about the politics of health and race.Additional information on the book can be found at www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/body-and-soul.

The talk will take place on the 1st of February at 4pm in the Neely Room of the Georgia Tech Library.

Kindle E-readers and Apple iPads are now available for checkout from the Georgia Tech Library.

The Kindles are 3G powered, Wi-Fi enabled, and available for a two-week loan period. The iPad 2’s are Wi-Fi enabled and available for 48-hour loan. Currently, there are five of each device available for checkout from the Library Service Desk. Library staff designed a quick-start guide for those who are unfamiliar with these devices.

The growing popularity of e-readers and tablet computers sparked a trend among academic libraries to start mobile device loan programs. Ellis added that feedback from students, faculty, and staff will influence the purchase of more Kindles and iPads in the future.

Library staff also plans to gather feedback from users to determine whether the devices are used primarily for leisure or academic purposes, and to solicit suggestions for e-book and app store purchases. A number of productivity apps and e-books are already installed on each device.

Users can also sign-in to their personal Amazon and iTunes accounts to download content. Please note that users are responsible for any content they download. Upon return, each device will be wiped clean of all user-downloaded content and returned to their original state.

To offer suggestions for iPad 2 apps, email gadgets@library.gatech.edu and for Kindle e-book suggestions email pop@library.gatech.edu.
The Office of Diversity Programs and the Women's Resource Center Book Club Announces their next selection:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
Friday, February 24, 2012 12-1 PM
Women's Resource Center
Discussion led by Stephanie Ray, Associate Dean of Students/Director, Diversity Programs

For years the medical and scientific communities conversed about the miraculous He-La cells. However, few thought about the real origin of the cells. After all, the cells came from a human being, right? What was her name? Did she have a family? The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a true story that parallels the Tuskegee Experiment. The story is about Henrietta Lacks, a poor Black women who was treated at the historic John's Hopkins Hospital for ovarian cancer. Without her knowledge her cells were harvested for scientific research. The cells were in such high demand a factory was built in Tuskegee, Alabama. He-La cells have traveled around the world and to the moon. Many diseases have been cured because this woman's cells were able to live outside her body. How could she not know? How could her family not know? How could we not know? Where is the justice?

Are you interested in giving back to the Atlanta community through fun and dynamic tutoring programs? If so, please read on to learn about what MOVE's tutoring programs have to offer you!

TEACH is offering two tutoring opportunities:

Place: Henry Grady High School
Subject: Math
Days: Mon-Thurs
Time: 3:30-4:30 pm

Place: Create Your Dreams
Subjects: Calculus, chem, bio, physics, etc.
Days: Tues
Time: 5-7 pm

If you would like to join or have any questions, please e-mail Christine Kim (ckim77@gatech.edu) the times that you can tutor, the subject and place, and your transportation situation (car or no car). If you do have a car, let me know if you are comfortable with carpooling with others. We should be starting tutorials on the week of January 23 so please send in your information ASAP.

Click "Read More" for more tutoring opportunities...

Children's Restoration Network (CRN) is a new program that focuses on tutoring and mentoring homeless children living in shelters in the Atlanta area. This program offers a lot of benefits for volunteers, such as:

Great experience: It's a wonderful opportunity for tutors/mentors to interact with a wide age range of students. Volunteers build strong relationships with their students and become a positive role model for a child just by spending time with them.

Flexible schedule: Volunteers may choose the dates and times at which they would like tutor, and volunteers are only required to tutor/mentor once a week for 1.5 hours. In addition, volunteers can choose a certain age range to tutor as well as whether they would prefer one-on-one or small group tutoring.

Easy access: There are a few shelters within walking distance of Tech, so transportation would not be required for volunteers who choose those locations.

This program is a great way to give back to the community and to make a huge difference in one child's life just by showing up once a week and showing them that someone cares about their well-being!
For more info or to sign up, visit http://move.gatech.edu/tutoring/crn.php or feel free to contact Joyce Wong at jwong32@gatech.edu. Please sign up before JANUARY 24 to begin volunteering this semester.

This program volunteers at City of Refuge in the afternoon Monday through Thursday. For more information, please contact Marcus Walker at mwalker42@gatech.edu.

TTP is a tutoring program that works in all subjects at Centennial Place Elementary, which is very walkable from campus. This program only requires one hour of tutoring time a week and is very flexible. For more information, please contact Kelsie Riemenschneider at kjr3@gatech.edu.
The Southern Teachers Agency helps teachers find jobs in private/independent schools around the South.

One part of their work is to hold Job Fairs that give candidates an opportunity for face‐to‐face meetings with school administrators who are trying to fill actual vacancies.

STA provides a free service to prospective teachers with knowledgeable, professional placement counselors guiding candidates through the competitive search process. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree to teach in a private school, but certification is not always required.

Southern Teachers Job Fairs are open only to active STA candidates, so apply now! The deadlines to apply for candidacy are:

January 27, 2012 (Atlanta Fair)
February 17, 2012 (Washington, DC Fair)

To apply, please visit the website at www.SouthernTeachers.com and submit an online application along with your resume and cover letter.
Sharing research is as important as doing research!

Each year 150-200 GT students present their research on campus at the Annual Undergraduate Research Spring Symposium (April 10th). This is a great opportunity for students to gain valuable experience presenting in a professional setting and to collaborate and garner feedback from peers and faculty, not to mention the awarding of prizes! Submit your abstract at www.undergradresearch.gatech.edu.

Deadline for abstract submission is March 2nd, 2012.
