Tue, 06 Mar 2018 14:11:38 +0000 en-US hourly 1 RuPaul Would ‘Probably Not’ Let a Transitioning Queen on ‘Drag Race’ Tue, 06 Mar 2018 14:11:38 +0000 In a new interview with the Guardian, RuPaul stood firm on his stance that trans women and bio-queens are unwelcome on Drag Race.

After explaining that drag’s political power lies in the dissonance of “men dressing up as women,” Ru was asked if he’d allow a “biological woman” to compete on the show.

“Drag loses its sense of danger and its sense of irony once it’s not men doing it, because at its core it’s a social statement and a big f-you to male-dominated culture,” RuPaul tells Guardian. “So for men to do it, it’s really punk rock, because it’s a real rejection of masculinity.” When asked if trans women can be drag queens, he brings up season nine contestant Peppermint, who was the first out trans woman to compete on the show. “Mmmm. It’s an interesting area. Peppermint didn’t get breast implants until after she left our show; she was identifying as a woman, but she hadn’t really transitioned.”

Trump to overhaul HHS office, shield health workers with moral objections – POLITICO Fri, 19 Jan 2018 19:29:10 +0000 The Trump administration on Thursday will announce an overhaul of the HHS civil rights office as part of a broader plan to protect health workers who don’t want to perform abortions, treat transgender patients seeking to transition or provide other services for which they have religious or moral objections.

Under a proposed rule — which has been closely guarded at HHS and is now under review by the White House — the civil rights office would be empowered to further shield these workers and punish organizations that don’t allow them to express their religious and moral objections, according to sources on and off the Hill. That would be a significant shift for the office, which currently focuses on enforcing federal civil rights and health care privacy laws.

HHS is planning to announce the changes at its headquarters Thursday morning.

The department’s leaders have repeatedly criticized the Obama administration for rolling back regulations dating to the George W. Bush administration that legally insulated health care workers while affirming their religious freedoms.

Roger Severino, the Trump administration appointee who now leads the HHS civil rights office, has repeatedly stressed that strengthening conscience protections for health care workers is a top priority for his office.

That’s alarmed advocates for LGBT patients, who say they’re already fighting to overcome stigmas and discrimination and who warn that the policy shift will only worsen their situation.

“This is the use of religion to hurt people because you disapprove of who they are,” said Harper Jean Tobin of the National Center for Transgender Equality. “Any rule that grants a license to discriminate would be a disgrace and a mockery of the principal of religious freedom we all cherish.”

Two Heterosexual Irish Men Marry to Avoid Inheritance Tax On Property Wed, 27 Dec 2017 17:16:39 +0000 Two Irish men have married in Dublin to avoid paying €50,000 in inheritance tax on a house.

Best friends Matt Murphy and Michael O’Sullivan are both heterosexual, but decided to get married when they discovered how much tax would have to be paid on the house Murphy, 83, intended to leave in his will to O’Sullivan, 58, who is his carer.

“I’ve known Matty for 30 years. We became very friendly after my second relationship broke up,” O’Sullivan, a father of three, told the Irish Mirror.

“I have been bringing Matt out in my car to various parties and all that kind of thing. He became friends with all my friends, they all loved him.”

Each man went through some tough times, with O’Sullivan becoming homeless and Murphy suffering from giant cell arteritis, which affects the optic nerve.

“I stayed over with him for a while and eventually Matt said ‘Why don’t you come and stay here?’ I would go over and stay with him the odd time but never full time.”

Lesbian teen pelted with juice boxes after school board president complains about LGBT-inclusive sex ed Tue, 28 Nov 2017 18:29:52 +0000 California teen was bullied at school for being a lesbian after the school board president complained about LGBT-inclusive sex education.

Logann Pruneda, a sophomore at Bullard High, said she was pelted with full juice boxes by classmates Monday — her 16th birthday — over her sexual identity, reportedThe Fresno Bee.

The teen heard a male voice call her “a faggot, a queer, a lesbo” during the attack but didn’t see him or recognize his voice, and she suffered bruising on her neck and back.

“They were pretty hard throws,” she told the newspaper. “All I heard was them calling me really mean names that involved my sexuality.”

Logann, who has been openly gay since middle school, said she’s frequently picked on for her sexuality but hadn’t faced physical bullying until this week.

“This is a daily thing,” said her mother, Gina Pruneda. “She comes home, and I ask how her day was, and she says a kid said ‘lesbian’ under his breath while she was giving a presentation. Last year, she pretty much spent every day eating lunch in a classroom because of the bullying. It’s not easy for her, but she’s learned to deal with it.”

Actor Anthony Rapp: Kevin Spacey Made A Sexual Advance Toward Me When I Was 14 Wed, 08 Nov 2017 17:24:04 +0000 Last June, Anthony Rapp settled in at the home of his good friend and fellow actor Camryn Manheim to watch the Tony Awards.

The New York natives were both in Toronto working, and Manheim had invited Rapp and his boyfriend over to partake in the beloved theater geek ritual. But for the first time, Rapp — a working actor since he was 9 years old, and most famously part of the original cast of the musical Rent — felt something he’d never experienced before with the Tonys: dread.

And that’s because the host that night was Kevin Spacey.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Rapp is publicly alleging for the first time that in 1986, Spacey befriended Rapp while they both performed on Broadway shows, invited Rapp over to his apartment for a party, and, at the end of the night, picked Rapp up, placed him on his bed, and climbed on top of him, making a sexual advance. According to public records, Spacey was 26. Rapp was 14.

Anthony Rapp in the 2005 feature film adaptation of Rent.

For years, Rapp, now 46, told no one about his experience, and he has never spoken with Spacey since. But as Spacey’s star began to rise through the 1990s and 2000s — including a Tony Award, two Oscars, a decadelong run as the creative director of the Old Vic theater in London, and six seasons and counting on the hit Netflix series House of Cards — Rapp’s frustration, anger, and incredulity with the sexual boundary he said Spacey crossed with him grew as well. Seeing Spacey now, “My stomach churns,” Rapp said. “I still to this day can’t wrap my head around so many aspects of it. It’s just deeply confusing to me.”

Representatives for Spacey, now 58, did not respond to numerous phone calls, emails, and a letter detailing the allegations. However, after this story was published, Spacey posted on Twitter that he did not remember the encounter with Rapp.

Disney Channel’s ‘Andi Mack’ to Premiere the Network’s First LGBTQ Storyline Fri, 27 Oct 2017 14:27:23 +0000 The Disney Channel show “Andi Mack” will break new ground for the network during its second season premiere this Friday, October 27 at 8pm ET/PT when it introduces its first LGBTQ storyline. In the episode, Andi’s friend Cyrus lets Buffy know that he has a crush on the same boy Andi does.

For anyone not yet familiar with the show, “Andi Mack” is a contemporary coming-of-age story about a relatable girl (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) who’s trying to determine where she fits in and the many amazing ways she can live her life. On the eve of her 13th birthday, Andi learns that her older sister, Bex (Lilan Bowden), is actually her mother. This revelation puts Andi on an unfamiliar path of self-discovery which she navigates with the help of her loving, albeit complicated, family; her two best friends, Cyrus (Joshua Rush) and Buffy (Sofia Wylie); and her middle school crush, Jonah Beck (Asher Angel). Along the way, Andi learns that sometimes the unexpected is what makes life great.

And in this season’s premiere episode, Cyrus begins to realize something about himself. Andi is hoping for her parents Bex and Bowie (Trent Garrett) to get married, all while awkwardly sorting out her feelings for classmate Jonah. Meanwhile, a second storyline depicts one of Andi’s two best friends, 13-year-old Cyrus, as he’s beginning to realize that he too has feelings for Jonah. This realization begins an important part of his journey to self-discovery as a gay teen and ultimately, his self-acceptance.

In the episode, Cyrus confides in Buffy. The scene, and what Buffy says to Cyrus, makes for positive role models both for kids and adult viewers. In subsequent episodes, Cyrus begins to understand himself, and can count on his supportive friends Buffy and Andi who, as teenagers, are also on a journey to self-discovery. He also grapples with how to tell his new girlfriend, Iris, about his new understanding of himself.

This story arc is a first for Disney Channel; it’s the first time the channel has depicted a character’s journey to self-discovery as an LGBTQ individual. However, it won’t be the first time an LGBTQ character has appeared on Disney Channel. Back in 2014, a lesbian couple appeared on an episode of “Good Luck Charlie.”

“With more and more young people coming out as LGBTQ, Andi Mack is reflecting the lives and lived experiences of so many LGBTQ youth around the country,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “Television reflects the real life world and today that includes LGBTQ youth who deserve to see their lives depicted on their favorite shows. Disney has been a leader in LGBTQ inclusion and there are so many young people who will be excited to see Cyrus’ story unfold.”

Murdered Transgender Teen Had Her Genitals Mutilated Before She Was Set On Fire Mon, 02 Oct 2017 14:40:55 +0000 Three suspects have been arrested for the monstrous murder of a transgender teenager.

Ally Steinfeld, 17, became the 21st transgender person to be killed in the US this year.

The body of the teenager, who was from Texas County, Missouri, was found near a mobile home belonging to Briana Calderas, 24.

Calderas has been arrested with Isis Schauer and Andrew Vrba, both 18.

Vrba has reportedly told police that he repeatedly stabbed Ally, gouging out her eyes and genitals.

Calderas and Schauer then went to a Walmart to buy items for burning Ally’s body, he said.

They then helped him to wrap Ally’s body, take it outside and set it on fire.

Vrba added that after they burned her body, they put the bones in a garbage bag and hid it in a chicken coop near Vrba’s home.

Police records show that Steinfeld’s mobile phone and a knife were recovered from the scene.

The three suspects have been charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and abandonment of a corpse.

Lesbian Fantasist Invented 15 Rapes and Sexual Assaults Which Saw Man Jailed to Get Sympathy From Girlfriends Wed, 20 Sep 2017 23:37:09 +0000 A fantasist who invented rape and sexual assault allegations against 15 men to get attention from her girlfriend has been jailed for ten years.

Jemma Beale, 25, claimed she had been raped by nine men and seriously sexually by six in four different encounters over the space of three years, causing one man to be wrongly jailed.

A judge warned that her “grotesque” string of lies would increase the likelihood of guilty men going free and prevent real victims from reporting such crimes.

Beale’s first victim, Mahad Cassim, served two years and nine months in jail, while she received £11,000 in criminal injuries compensation following the alleged rape.

The court heard that she went on to make a string of false allegations that took up 6,400 hours of police time and cost at least £250,000.

Most lies began “impulsively” following drunken rows with girlfriends as she sought attention and to arouse jealousy.

Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith, sitting at London’s Southwark Crown Court, told Beale she was a “very, very convincing liar” and “enjoyed being seen as a victim.”

He added: “What is particularly chilling is the manner in which you persisted in making allegations which you knew were untrue even to the extent of committing and repeating perjury.

“These false allegations of rape, false allegations which will inevitably be widely publicised, are likely to have the perverse impact of increasing the likelihood of guilty men going free.

“Cases such as this bring a real risk that a woman who has been raped or sexually assaulted may not complain to the police for fear of not being believed.”

Beale, from Bedfont, south west London, was found guilty last month of four counts of perjury and four counts of perverting the course of justice after a five-week trial at Southwark Crown Court.

Canada takes in LGBT Russians fleeing ‘gay purge’ in Chechnya Fri, 08 Sep 2017 13:45:34 +0000 Dozens of gay and bisexual men have received help from the Canadian government in escaping Russia, after allegations that their home region of Chechnya is running detention and torture prisons for LGBT people, BuzzFeed reports.

Chechnya, a predominantly Muslim region in Russia’s south where conservative hardliner Ramzan Kadyrov has emboldened religious dogma in social policy over the last decade, is frequently under the telescope of human rights activists. Over the last year, Russian independent journalists have alleged Chechen authorities run six prisons for LGBT men.

Official denial of the reports has not been convincing, as the region has also claimed there aren’t any LGBT persons there. International groups have attempted legal action since the reports came out in April, as Russia’s central government has not taken any action against local authorities. Human Rights Watch has detailed some of the methods reportedly used to arrest non-heterosexual men in Chechnya and torture them into denouncing any other men they know are interested in men.

According to Rainbow Railroad and the Russian LGBT Network, the Canadian government has been working to house persecuted gay or bisexual Chechens. A total of 31 people have been cleared to come to Canada as part of a program that has already helped 22 men make the move from Chechnya.

Rainbow Railroad, a Canadian NGO that offers aid to the LGBT community, spearheaded the now government-led campaign to move men out of safe houses in Russia and into Canada. The Globe and Mail newspaper reported that Canada bent a refugees regulation to provide a safe new homeland for the men, the first of whom arrived in June.

Kimahli Powell, executive director of Rainbow Railroad, told BuzzFeed Canada that the campaign was kept a secret until now in order to ensure the safety of those being moved.

“There were large concerns—there’s still concerns—about family members getting to these people,” said Powell.

The safe houses were also under “constant threat,” said Powell, adding that Russian authorities have made multiple attempts to gain access to them. Thus, going public with the campaign is something the Rainbow Railroad took “very, very seriously.”

“We have all these new arrivals in Canada that need a lot of support, that faced traumatic situations, that don’t know the language, that are very, very young. They need community support,” said Powell.
