The Large Hadron Collider, the world's most powerful particle accelerator, just cannot catch a break. First, a coolant leak destroyed some of the magnets that guide the energy beam. Then LHC officials postponed the restart of the machine to add additional safety features. Now, a bird dropping a piece of bread on a section of the accelerator has, according to the Register, shut down the whole operation.

Similar to the Peek Pronto, and produced by the same company (Peek, the TwitterPeek device is available for a set price ($99.95) with a subscription (six months free, then $7.95/month) or for a one time price ($199.95) which includes "lifetime service" - as long as the service is available, I guess.

While I don't have a problem with Twitter - I tweet quite a bit - I have to wonder if this device will take off like they're clearly hoping that it will. If people aren't adapting to use Twitter on their cell phones - and considering that you can simply send a text message to update it on even the most basic phone - then I wonder who their target audience is.

I myself tweet from my cell phone, the computer I happen to be using, or even my iPod touch. It's easy, convenient, and hassle-free - so maybe they have a point here. I guess maybe my problem is that it becomes yet another device to carry around. Granted, it's purely optional, so I guess it becomes a matter of using it or not, depending on your needs. I wish them luck, but I don't think I'll ever be buying on. Christmas sales, however, will be a good prediction of how the device will do over all. Time, as always, will tell all.

It's funny, since I was just discussing some of FOX's cancellations this morning with a co-worker (see my previous thoughts on FOX's "programming" here or here). I haven't been able to watch any of this season of Dollhouse just yet, but I guess I'll have to try harder - maybe just tune in the receiver and then turn off the TV? I'll watch it, just so dang busy.....

I guess I could also just wait for the ax to fall, then enjoy season 2 on DVD, much like you can now with season one.

We got off to a slow start on day two, mostly due to the whole "arriving late and not getting the room we booked" thing. We got in the car after checking out and.... drove. On our way along the highway, we passed the NSA - very hush hush, as you might know - and the National Cryptologic Museum. I took the photo of that stone wall since it was quite nice - apparently Maryland feels very strongly that the highways should be beautiful. They do a good job. We also passed the ramp for NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Several places I would have loved to have stopped at, but.... miles to go before the end of the day and all that.

We drove through DC, which was nice - you know, 'cause it's DC and all. There was a tunnel under a river - no idea which one, but maybe the Potomac River? The Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial lined up nicely at one point, but I didn't realize until it was too late to get the camera out - so I had to make due with individual photos. We also passed The Pentagon, but it doesn't photograph well from street level. A friend of Jen's parked there when she got lost while moving into the area - apparently, a bunch of uniformed men were nice enough to help her unpack while still in the parking lot (i.e. they didn't take chances about her "being lost"). Nice. We also cruised past the United States Air Force Memorial - didn't know that was there, but it's kinda cool.

Completely by accident - well, we wanted coffee - we stopped in Quantico, VA. Getting off the highway, we saw an entrance to Marine Corps Base Quantico. There's a replica of the USMC War Memorial outside the base. Just around the corner? The National Museum of the Marine Corps and Heritage Center. The building itself is built to evoke the image of the flag raising of Iwo Jima - something that they did masterfully. I especially liked the quote by Sergeant Major Daniel Daly: "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?". The museum itself was very moving, and with the exception of the one or two pictures I actually took, I didn't feel right taking photos. During the trip through the museum, we took a immersive tour of battle of Iwo Jima, called, I think, "Uncommon Valor." It was very humbling and... well, it just makes you appreciate things a little more. The gentleman who gave the presentation about the actual battle of Iwo Jima was a gentleman who served in, I want to say, the 24th Regiment of the 4th Marine Division. He wanted us to know this, because he wanted to make sure that we understood that while he was on Iwo Jima, he didn't arrive until after the heaviest of fighting had already occurred. It was wonderful that he was willing to share his experiences with us, and I only wish that I had gotten his name.

In case you weren't aware, I'm a huge fan of Sonic Drive Inn. When we left in the morning, I did some quick math to figure out where we might be at lunch time and where, if any, a Sonic might be. Guess what? Right off the highway, baby! A quick stop for lunch gave us the strength to get on with the rest of the trip. Along the way, we had seen some billboards for "South of the Border" - and weren't sure what to make of it. I texted a friend who's been there, and she said "Yes it's nice. If you like serial killer headquarters." We decided to just keep driving and not take chances - although I have to say that based on the billboards, they do offer quite a few services and attractions. Maybe some other time when I have less of a schedule to meet.

The hotel for the night was much better - two queen beds, and the hotel was either brand new or recently re-done. Either way, a much MUCH better experience - and I'm sure the fact that we arrived much earlier in the evening (about 7:30) made things easier.

An aside before I post more trip photos/description:

When was the last time you saw a DeLorean on the roads? Aside from a recent episode of "American Dad" (clips of which can be found a Hulu), probably not recently.

I've seen three. One was on the way down to Florida, and two were here in Connecticut - one on the way back, and one on my road - I passed it going the other direction just a few hundred feet from my house.

How crazy is that???

Not as crazy as this: a 1/15th scale DeLorean Time Machine, as seen in the Back to the Future Trilogy

If you happen to already own your own DeLorean, you could just pimp it out a bit and get your own Flux Capacitor Replica, but I think you'd also need to round up some cool blue neon lights for the outside and a Mr. Fusion - but if you get the Flux Capacitor and some plutonium (or know when the next lightning strike is) you might be able to just go find that yourself...

So, we got off to a late start - like leaving my house at 8:30pm or so. A quick trip to the store to get some snacks, then off to see what kind of trouble awaited us. Traffic was fine, except the part that I dreaded - rightfully, it turned out - in New York, before we got on the George Washington bridge. I'd driven through this part of the Bronx once before: a trip to Sesame Place with another family, in two minivans. I managed to see the EXACT SAME GAS STATION this time that we stopped at the last time. To say it was weird is an understatement.

Our stop for the night was a hotel to be named later in Edgewood, MD. It's to be named later because, despite me calling Thursday night to confirm and double-check the reservation, they got it wrong. When I called, they said that they had a King non-smoking room set for us. I corrected them and told them it was to be a double queen non-smoking room - and the person I spoke to said they'd take care of it. They didn't. The woman at the reception desk looked in the computer and couldn't figure out what the problem was, and asked if I had called to make a change to the reservation on the 8th of this month. I didn't. She also didn't see any indication of me calling on Thursday night, which cheered me up no end. Besides offering a double queen smoking room - NOT acceptable - she was able to get us a king non-smoking with a sleeper sofa. Guess who ended up on the sofa? Me. To say that I was unhappy with the arrangements is an understatement, but considering it was 1:30 in the morning, I just wanted to go to sleep. Like, now. So we took it. The woman at reception said she'd tell the manager so they could look into it, and then provided us with sheets, a pillow and a blanket "just in case" the sofa bed wasn't made.

As the photos below attest, it wasn't made.

I also found the "no-smoking" sign AND the ashtray, in the same room, to be a nice "yin-yang" kind of indication of the night. Messed up.

In the morning, I talked to the day shift supervisor - who was aware of the problem, and looked at the computer again. She said that I had talked to her when I called, and she made the changes - so she wasn't sure why the reservation change didn't take. Since the manager isn't going to be in again until sometime this week, I'll have to wait and see if the call me. If not.... I'm not sure. I want to give them a chance to do "the right thing" but I'm not really sure what that would be..... Time will tell, I suppose.

My niece is moving down to live with her mother, and I volunteered/got suckered into the trip. So far, it's been ok - I'll have another post with other stuff like hotel reviews (one not awesome, one really good so far), photos, and other thoughts.

In the meantime.... My brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law have all chipped in and bought my neice and got her a GPS unit. We got a Garmin nüvi 205, which has proved to be invaluable to us so far. Yes, I have printed directions from Google Maps, and from the hotel websites to get us there. But what if we make a wrong turn? Then we're pretty much boned, right? Well, not now. We have, on this trip, come close to a wrong turn or two. And on one occasion, we were driving to get some food and left the GPS on by accident. With this thing turned on, it tells us that we have to give it a second while it figures out where we are, and then tries to re-route us accordingly. It's pretty cool, and I hope she makes extensive use of it.

When we went to New Hampshire for our summer vacation, I borrowed a more "robust" model from a friend for the trip - considering we had been to the area once before, and to the park we went to once before (Story Land), we had some idea of where we were going for things - but what about some more out of the way places? Or if we got lost? Not a problem anymore. If it was up to me, I'd buy one now - never know when it will come in handy.

So far, it's been easy to operate, which is going to be key for my niece. When I got it I had to register it and then download some upgraded maps - almost 3gb worth! Considering it's for the whole US, I guess that's pretty reasonable. It hooks up to my computer (yes, Mac compatible!) via USB, and the Garmin applications (for setup, updating and POI loading) are not only usable, but easy to use and not a complete and total pain in the ass. Very good move, Garmin. After I change the registration info, I hope to have her get the apps for her computer and keep it up to date herself.

Another good purchase I've made recently:
A-DATA 16GB Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) Flash Card. I bought it to use with my ExpressCard SD card reader for an experiment - I wanted to load Mac OSX onto it and see if it loads faster than the built in drive for various reasons - not the least of which was that Snow Leopard was coming out. Testing a newer, faster, leaner OS on a faster interface is a win win situation, and I wanted to see how it might also help out with battery life - unmounting the hard drive while booted from the flash drive would remove a pretty significant drain from the battery, I hope.

Anyway, after taking some photos and videos yesterday, I decided to try to use it in my camera - after a quick reformat, it showed up fine. I can take more than quite a few photos (9999+, and that's just a sign that there's room for TONS of photos), but there's also apparently room for about 135 minutes of video - and I think that might be just for one clip. Can't be sure on that until I have that much footage to shoot - and I think that I'd probably run out of juice before I got to that point.

So, there you have it: two little gadgety things that I've been using for a couple of days, but so far, they're working out well and will probably be becoming a part of my regular geek kit.

It's been super busy for me - the Fall semester started this week, and work has been crazy busy.

The best part? The person who used to be my boss but is now a "peer" is still acting like he's... my boss. It's been interesting since he got back from his medical leave - but I was on vacation. When I got back from vacation, it's been go go go ever since. Not that I'm complaining - but in addition to my job role changes, I've got this other dynamic I need to work with, and it's making things a little harder for me. Very hard, at times.

The semester has started, however, and you can't stop that. WIth the start of the semester comes the usual influx of calls from faculty members who have problems with their computers. Well, that could mean a lot of things, so let me re-phrase that: Faculty members who are turning on their office computers for the first time in several months and remembering that they were having a problem with it back in April, but didn't have time to call the helpdesk and log a ticket. Can we maybe fix it now? Like, this afternoon? In 20 minutes?

Ah.... it's good to have the semester start again....

Aside from an issue with the firmware (more on that in a second), setup was a breeze, and configuration was super easy - easier than I was afraid it would be. The best part? The Mac software for it is first rate, and the configuration is all web based, and completely platform neutral - something I'm not used to seeing when I buy "network" device that's allegedly cross-platform.

I've tried an Apple Time Capsule before, and I like the device for the NAS part of things. My biggest problem with it is the cost ($299 for 1 terabyte), and that stems from the fact that it's got a built in wireless access point. My issue with that is that I already have wireless setup and configured. Granted, the Time Capsule supports the faster 802.11n speeds, but at home, I only have one computer that can support that - so it's not worth the investment right now, especially since the 802.11g that I have does the job very nicely for what I need: getting online. I'll save the discussion for bandwidth bottlenecks for another day.

So, for a device that's just going to sit on my network at home, I don't need bells and whistles. The Time Capsule has some, and I just don't like paying for features I'm not going to use.

This Iomega drive, however, is just what I need for home use: a NAS drive that just works out of the box. Well, sort of. The issue I had is that the drive ships with version 1.029 of the firmware, and yet their website has version 2.040 available. While the upgrade process was seemless, it didn't mention that I also needed to upgrade the Home Storage Manager software, which lives on your computer. In the case of the 2.040 firmware, it also lets your Mac treat the drive like a Time Capsule in that you can use Time Machine to backup your computer across the network. That right there is worth ALL of the frustration I put up with (only about 20 minutes though).

Tonights task was to get the drive up and running, then setup backups from one Mac Mini and two PC's (one with XP, one with Vista). Once I got the firmware issue straightened out, I got the Mac going - as usual, watching a machine start to back itself up makes me feel all warm inside for some reason. Yeah, I'm a little weird that way.

One the PC with Windows XP, I put the included CD into the machine and the installer auto-started (which, let's be honest, isn't that good an idea - isn't that how Sony inserted some kind of rootkit on a bunch of machines at one point?) and offered to install Retrospect Express HD. Clickity-clickity, and we're off and running. I mapped the NAS as drive Z, then configured Retrospect to backup the whole drive every day at 8:00 am. Simple, straightforward, and done. Well, I had to click the button to start the first backup, but that's the one that takes the longest, so that's not a surprise.

The second PC is a super-whiz bang fast fast fast Dell machine with gobs of RAM, Windows Vista, and even more drive space. I was a little worried about this one, mostly because I wasn't sure how much data was on the machine - turns out I was right to be worried, because in just a few months, there's 192 gigabytes of data. This is for a user who mostly browses the web and downloads PDF files for his Masters. I guess those PDF's really pack a punch!

Installation here was a little harder, since the CD didn't want to install Retrospect at all. Once I manually started the process, I thought I'd be home free, but apparently part of the automated install is the installation of a serial number. Which I couldn't find. Crap. Fortunately, Iomega's site had the answer: a tech chat (purely web based, unlike other companies) and a tech who could just generate a new serial number for me. It took like 20 minutes, but I can't complain - I got what I wanted and didn't have to sit on hold for 2 hours to get it! Configuration for the Vista machine was along the same lines, and just started humming along soon after.

The NAS also offers integration with iTunes and DNLA, which means that if you have a device that integrates with your TV (or a DNLA compliant TV) you can plug it into the network and have it play your content right from the drive. So home movies can be put on the big screen, or you can rip your whole DVD collection to the device (for backup purposes, of course) and watch them that way, instead of having to get the DVD out. For iTunes, you put the content on the drive and it will show up as a shared resource on any computer with iTunes - so you can play your music from any computer at home/work without having to have copies on every computer. Nice.

My favorite part about this product was the price: $149.99 or so for the 1 terabyte model and $125 for the 500 gigabyte model. You can't go wrong with either one, especially for a device that you can basically setup and then forget about! It's especially nice that you can setup the backups and not worry about them (for Time Machine in Mac OS X anyway) since my kids all share a computer. I back it up sometimes, but not frequently - and they have been known to do some very weird things to it, including crashing it and then walking away and not telling anyone. For two days. Right now, I'm using another NAS drive to backup the computers at home, as well as using it as a way point for sharing the family iPhoto collection with my wife. It's nice knowing that there's two backups of all those photos - 11 years worth at this point, and growing. Good thing most of these NAS drives have the option to plug in another hard drive to share two of them on the network!
