I like to work on random projects from time to time (to take my mind off my busy editing schedule), especially when friends come up to me and share an idea that I think would be fun doing and also would serve as some infotainment for the masses.

Hence, I present to you GeekChicTV - yeah, three episodes in one go!

So what is GeekChicTV all about?

GeekChicTV was put together by two geekettes over one of those days when girl talk was all about Social Media, the Internet and Social Media.

Seeing the lack of channels and resources for female geeks, thought was put in to forming an interactive channel for practical tech tools and apps for women (with a little bling, pink and glitter to top it off)

TM's 'The World of EveryoneConnects'

Remember "Through My Window" - the song by Bunkface which was the talk of town last year? If you do, then you'd probably also remember that that song was used to launch TM's EveryoneConnects campaign which was a huge success among the urban youth last year.

This year in conjunction with their one year anniversary, TM launched another cool new platform. An interactive one where fans from the community can interact with one another and share interesting news from sports and happenings to movies and music.

Aptly called 'The World of EveryoneConnects' - TM believes that their 65,000 strong fan base on Facebook is proof that broadband brings everyone regardless of backgrounds together and this new platform will be able to further spur that connection.

Among the features of this new platform include :

There's been a lot of hubbub recently about this year's Shout Awards. Everywhere I go it seems to be the topic to talk about. I've heard it numerous times on the radio, seen tweets and blogs about it and even Facebook.

Well, can't blame everyone for the excitement because of the sweet line up's that will be performing that night.

Partying it like a rockstar, there was a pre-party for everyone last weekend at The Library located at e@Curve and it was massively packed.

It felt like everyone, who was everyone was there to party the night away. Celcom certainly outdid themselves this time around.

I fancied myself to a couple of cups of the free flow of drinks that was being served that night. Talk about generosity!

The pre-party had Mizz Nina performing live. What a treat it was for most people who are her fans because I don't think many people has caught her performing live in a lot of shows. Unless they attended her album launch at Zouk a couple of months ago or at Arthur's Day.

I was bopping my head along to her music but got my rock on when Disagree came on stage.

They also announced the winners of the Battle of the Bands that night.

Celcom certainly knew how to throw a party and I'm looking forward to it this weekend!

Nokia N8 - Symbian^3 And Still Climbing That Tree

Any phone user will probably take into consideration the software that's running behind it before purchasing it. You can almost always see people testing out phones at the mobile phone sales booths in Sungei Wang Plaza or Low Yat Plaza all the time if you're shopping there.

It's like with your computer. You'd probably want to get a feel of what Windows 7 is like compared to your old Windows XP.

With the Nokia N8, Symbian^3 rocks the house and it is also the first device supporting it to hit the market.

My old Nokia X6 alongside the Nokia N8 which in all honesty, sucks big time - thanks to Symbian^1

Since things like this can only be experienced in real life (or by viewing tons of tech videos online comparing softwares among phones) - I'm just gonna selectively list what I dig and don't about some features of the Nokia N8 couple with Symbian^3. Photos just don't do justice.

You get 3 panels of Homescreen to play with. Add what you like for easy access.

I like :
1. The fact that you get 3 panels (with each panel supporting up to 6 different tabs/widgets)
2. The fluidity of switching between Homescreens

I like it less :
1. For the slight delay when swiping between Homescreens

Yeah, even in WebTV mode - there is a hint of sluggishness when switching back and forth.

Bonus like :
1. The middle tab with three dots. When tapped, it also functions the same as swiping your Homescreens. Using this instead of the cooler swiping method.

Pressing the Menu key also almost immediately brings you in without any delay unless you are running a lot of apps in the background.

Some like hot and some like it cold.

Edit your Homescreen to suit your needs smoothly.Tap, drag and drop is the way to go.

Multitasking is next.

Yeap, you can now open up your Music Player, Video Player, Web Browser, read some Messages or Email and go to your Contacts to look for a friend or any other combo you prefer.

And you can close either one of them (or all of them) as you like.

Pressing and holding the Menu key brings up a strip of things you've been doing.

I like:
1. The multitasking support
2. Option to close them individually (by tapping the 'X' in each individual window) or all at once (by tapping and holding longer till a dialog appears with options)

I like less:
1. Some apps take longer to close while some don't even close at all until after a while

QWERTY keyboard still only appears when phone is in Landscape mode. Nice if it's in Portrait too.

So was it a big difference comparing to older Nokia phones running on Symbian^1?
Yes

Would I find it a nuisance when multitasking?
Depending on how many items are you running- most of the time, it's rather smooth.

One thing that I learn from Symbian^3?
Patience. You still gotta live with that 'millisecond delay' almost all the time when swiping, switching, closing and opening up apps.

Bonus like : The time displayed when phone is locked. No need to unlock to know what's ticking.

In conclusion, if Android and iOS is Windows Vista and Windows 7 respectively, then Symbian^3 is your Windows XP. And that's only a reference of sorts and not concrete ya.

Saw some friends tweeting about this little nifty service to measure an individual's performance on Twitter called TweetLevel just recently and I found it pretty interesting keying in your friend's Twitter handle to find out how influential are they and all that. Then a friend suggested comparing companies on Twitter and these came up :

1. Do we all really believe in every single info that is 'churned' out for us (such as the above) when a trusted name (Edelman who 'cooked' this up) is behind it? What are your thoughts?

Kings Of Leon - From 2003 to Come Around Sundown

Kings of Leon would probably be no stranger to us here in Malaysia (more recently) - thanks to the radio airplay they get for their song "Use Somebody". Heck, even clubs are already dishing out the remix versions of it and clubbers can be seen head banging to it on a Saturday night.

My first experience with them? - Back in 2003.

College days are the best, wouldn't you agree? And that is when I first got to know of them through their first album , Youth and Young Manhood.

With their greasy licks in songs like "California Waiting", "Holy Roller Novocaine" and "Molly's Chambers" - I became an instant fan of the Kings and they were on my play list pretty much everyday.

Yes, Southern rock was my cup of tea.

Not long after that, Aha Shake Heartbreak came along. And my university days were filled with good music once again. This is my favorite album among them all.

Yes, its got the advisory sticker on it, but lyrical nonsense aside, how can one ever forget the running bass line of "Razz", the screeching vocals on "The Bucket" and the hi-hat and tambourine madness on "Taper Jean Girl". Certainly one of the best albums in 2005 for me.

Frontman Caleb still spotting long hair at that time.

2 years later - I graduated and they were there to greet me with Because Of The Times. This time, if you've listened to their older stuff, you'd probably feel them "maturing" here in terms of lyrics. Musically, they are still distinguishable enough when Caleb goes into 'yodel' mode every now and then.

Tracks like "On Call", "True Love Way" and "Arizona" still remains in my rock songs play list till today. Darker and lyrically touching a lot on the womankind, Kings of Leon continues to be one of my favorite bands.

Their new look circa 2007 onwards.

Then came the worldwide recognition album, Only By The Night. If you pay close attention, this album sounds like the continuation of the previous one - musically. This is probably because the band had already started working on this album just after the release of BOTT.

With chart topping hits like "Sex on Fire", "Use Somebody" and "Crawl" - it seems like there is no stopping for the Kings. Even other tracks like "Notion", "I Want You" and "Revelry" are a crowd-pleaser and generally loved by rockers to jam to in the studio.

If you haven't checked out their live performances, you should. They've got one DVD out - Kings of Leon - Live at the O2 London, England with a mixture of songs as old as from their first album - so it is a good compilation to see them live if you're a new fan.

This year, the Kings released Come Around Sundown.

If you follow, their first single "Radioactive" was premiered with the music video on their official website on September 8 and was received positively during its first week of release.

After spinning it in the car for about a month now, I'd have to say Come Around Sundown falls in between the heavier, darker BOTT and the playful ASH with a pinch of 'country feel' added in the mix.

Standout tracks for myself include "The End", "Pyro", "Back Down South" and "Mi Amigo". "The Immortals" and "Pickup Truck" are not too bad either.

Certainly a good album for rock lovers out there, CAS would not necessarily be your cup of tea (for those of you who know the Kings from OBTN) but would be a good addition to your Kings of Leon collection.

Coming a long way since 2003 - it seems like Kings of Leon will not fade off so soon. I now look forward to another DVD of theirs and a 2012 album perhaps? Long live the Kings.

Nokia N8 - HDMI TV-Out

I guess one of the amazing things you can do with your mobile phone these days is the ability to connect it to a TV so you can share photos or home videos with your friends and family.

And that is what the Nokia N8 can do.

With the HDMI cable connector/adapter included in the box, all you need to start viewing some awesome HD videos and photos is to get a standard HDMI cable and of course, a HDMI-ready television.

Upclose - left one goes to the phone - right one goes to your own HDMI cable.

Waiting for some HD love.

Very easy to locate. Pop it open with your fingernail to get started.

Once connected, you'll also see the HDMI symbol on your phone.

So here is what it looks like connected :

Nokia N8 pumping out awesome colours.

Depending on your TV's model, you'll pretty much get everything on screen.

During video playback, the Nokia N8's screen only shows the video's title :

While you enjoy some serious HD on your TV.

What's good about the Nokia N8 is that you get to just drop the video file (for The Walking Dead, it's a .mkv file) and Nokia's in-built player picks it up without any sort of conversion needed.

Complete with an optional audio hookup (mine's connected to the home theater system) and the nice Matroska format compability - bet your friends can't tell where is it playing from and probably thought it's from a DVD.

Finding your videos are also done easily - nothing new here with the file name, duration and file size. Scroll up and down, locate and play.

Whether its sports :

Note : I just love the 720p playback direct from my rendered video works.

The Nokia N8 comes in real handy especially when you want to share photos as well. Launch the photo album :

You get to see all your photos and videos taken chronologically in the photo album view.

And of course, view the photos - nice and big on your television set.

9mp photos fit right in the 16:9 ratio.

While the 12mp photos appears in 4:3 ratio. Still very crisp.

Photos taken vertically appear like so.

And not forgetting, the Nokia N8's TV-out function also allows you to play games on the big screen :

Magnifies your interfaces (whatever it may be) :

And displays anything that you'd like to be on the television for easy reading :

Certainly a plus point - the Nokia N8's TV-out works perfectly for my work as I can show my potential clients my video portfolio on the television without having to use a DVD, laptop or a media player. All I need is just my Nokia N8, the HDMI cable and a compatible television.

Note : I've also read that you can still output to TV using the old Nokia 3.5mm to A/V cable plugged into the Nokia N8's 3.5mm headset jack. So if you don't have a HDMI ready television, you can still TV-out your Nokia N8. Yay!

So I've been using the Nokia N8 for a few days now and being a photography type of person, I'd naturally whip it out and snap away. With its 12 Megapixel capability complete with a Carl Zeiss lens, Xenon flash and sensor, you'd probably expect the quality to match many point and shoot cameras out there - and boy, it really does match (and sometimes even performs better).

The only drawback is that it takes about 1-2 seconds to fully go into camera mode when switching from your Homescreen (or whatever it is you are doing). Other than that, its got some pretty standard and neat options to play with. These include changing the camera settings' Mode, Colour Tone, White Balance, Exposure, Light Sensitivity, Contrast and Sharpness. There's also the nifty Face Detection for taking portraits of people which is rather cool when you want that focus to stay on a face (or faces).

Anyway, here's a little collection of what the N8 can do for those of you who's interested to get it for its image quality :

Xplay Shout! Awards! - Get Invites!

Most people know I am a music lover. The music collection I actually own can be pretty alarming to some and also can be another treasure chest for a few people. Which is why I always look forward to this award event that happens in the Malaysia entertainment industry (which we should have more of!) called The Shout! Awards. They also recognizes the entertainment industry people as whole such as television, film and radio as well.

XPLAY is known a lot for their series of music events nationwide that everyone has come to know and enjoy going. We get our fair share of music mix together with local and international DJs all the time. I’ve missed a couple of the last ones like when LapSap was spinning, I heard it was a solid set and the crowd was so pumped up, everyone was having a great time. Well, most of my friends who went came home raving about it to me.

I decided not to miss another event organized by XPLAY, which is why when I heard there will be a pre-show party for the Shout! Awards, I was sold. Happening at The Library (that place is a decent place to chill out and kick back enjoying bands playing on stage) at e@curve on the 13th November 2010. To be honest, I am keener in checking out the performances by the 2009 Shout! Awards winners along with the DJs and the Mobile Content Awards 2010 Nominees at this party.

I’ve known the band Disagree since they first started their music career. I still have a copy of their EP called ‘Homemade Jam’ that I purchased at one of the gigs they played at. So to catch one of my old time Alternative Rock bands live, I was looking forward to hear ‘Crumbs’ ‘Scarecrow Adam’ or even ‘Suicide Note’ again live. They were huge back then and they still are.

Mizz Nina a name that is no longer unheard anymore among the Malaysia music scene will also be performing. I am sure you remember her with her massive radio airplay of her single ‘What You Waiting For’ with Colby O’Donnis. I am pretty sure the hip hop singer will be putting on a show that can surprise us all.

I’ve heard of Hujan the band that will also be performing as well as DJ Ash who apparently is the man for mash-up scenes. So yet to hear him do his thing on the decks.

Adam Lambert : Glam Nation Tour Malaysia 2010 - All Glammed Up!

So it was Adam Lambert's Glam Nation Tour 2010 concert yesterday at the Putra Indoor Stadium, Bukit Jalil and thanks to Sony Music Malaysia, got myself some time off from work and went for it. Here's a little on what happened (crowd observations made at the furthest back of the Rock Zone) :

745pm : Crowd released into the stadium. The upper levels were filled.
Crowd : Settling in, blowing up their DiGi long balloon-thingy, finding the best spot to enjoy the concert.

815pm : Iqwal opened with Jay Sean's "Down" followed by Dennis Lau + Danell Lee with Bon Jovi's "It's My Life"
Crowd : Random cheers from all over. Some started dancing to "Down". Most karaoke-ed to Bon Jovi's overplayed song.

830pm : DiGi released its yellow balls for the crowd to be amused with.
Crowd : Kept pushing the balls whenever it came to them. Some even tugged at it so hard, it banged heads. Some wanted to take it home but failed. In the effort of spreading love, the crowd even tried giving some ball love to those seated on the upper levels. Some Eurasian lady stole the limelight by dancing to the filler music (Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance") for about 5 minutes in a silver glitter jacket on the upper level. Nice try.

9pm : Stadium lights off. Stage lights on.
Crowd : Anticipating Adam. Some poor girl was so hyper she jumped and slipped but she got up and was fine. Gotta be more careful wherever we are.

910pm : Adam takes the stage with "Voodoo", "For Your Entertainment", "Rabbit Hole", "Ring of Fire" before taking off his hat.
Crowd : Most sang along to "For Your Entertainment". Most very quiet during "Ring of Fire" - must be an age thing. Johnny Cash rules.

920pm : Adam continues entertaining the crowd backed up by his dancers with "Fever", "Sleepwalker", "Whataya Want From Me" (acoustic), "Soaked", "Broken Open" and "Aftermath". Nicely thematic backgrounds to go along with the songs.
Crowd : Some started going off (probably to the loo) and most was generally jiving along. Spotted some veterans head banging at the back as well.

945pm : The performance continued on with "Surefire", "Strut", "Music Again" before Adam introduced his band members to the crowd with each of them 'goreng-ing' when it was their turn.
Crowd : People generally cheered louder for drummers. Adam's bassist not getting much attention - and I think we know why. ;)

10pm : Adam said "“What I want you to walk away from this show with is; no matter how much money, fame, fortune or sex in your life, it doesn’t mean much unless it’s connected with love.” before breaking out into "If I Had You"
Crowd : Karaoke session in progress.

1010pm : Adam introduced his dancers before going off stage.
Crowd : "We want more!" Some thought the concert was over and left.

1015pm : Adam came back with "Madworld" and "20th Century Boy" before saying goodnight to the crowd.
Crowd : Some were sitting down, some were still standing and rocking out. *claps claps claps*

1030pm : Concert ends.
Crowd : "Daddy, can you pick me up at the entrance?" "I'm coming home now already." "Wonder if the trains are still operating." "Apa benda ni?"

Stunning vocal performance by Adam Lambert, it was like watching an extended version of American Idol all over again. Kudos to Marctensia and Sony Music Malaysia for this well-organized concert.
