Who are SYC ?   

We are a group of young people from across the city who represent young people aged 11 – 21 (or up to 25 if they have additional needs).  

We are the voice of young people in Sheffield.  

We work on issues important to young people and this year our priorities are youth provision, mental health, bullying, crime, transport and enviroment.  

SYC believe in:

We are all from different areas, groups, backgrounds and abilities, but we all have one thing in common – What we believe in!  

We believe that all young people have the right to have a say in what happens in their city.  

We believe that young people have views and ideas about how to make things better and are willing to get involved if they are given the chance.  

We believe that every young person has the right to have their say and get involved, and should not be discriminated against no matter what, as long as they don’t take other peoples rights away themselves!

Why visit Skills Yorkshire and the Humber?

It’s the biggest careers and skills event for young people in the region taking place at the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 September.

What can I do there?

Loads! You can test your reaction speed or fly a helicopter with the Army, win an i-Pad and get interactive guidance with Learning World, get pumping with Yorkshire Water to win an i-Pod and get interviewed by a television company or be live on Hallam FM with Dearne Valley College. With over 50 exhibitors including Central College of Health and Beauty, Doncaster College, Kostal UK Ltd, NOMS, NotGoingToUni.co.uk, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Royal Air Force, Rotherham College of Arts & Technology, Sheffield College, Wakefield College, Yorkshire and Humber Apprentice Training Agency, University of Southampton School of Health Sciences and loads more.

You get to find out about careers, training and skills by trying them out and talking to people. Whatever you want to do you can find someone to help you find out more at Skills Yorkshire and the Humber.

Anyone who can help you make the right choices is welcome. You can bring your family, friends or teachers along, to find out all about the opportunities open to you. The show is open from 9.30am until 3pm and families can come along at any time.

Requirements: Must have GCSE grades A-C or equivalent in English and Maths and a good knowledge of Microsoft packages. The candidate must have a good telephone manner, be willing to learn, able to work on their own initiative as well as part of a team. Good communication skills are essential. The successful candidate must be confident and well presented.

Training: AAT foundation qualification at Level 2. Company offers a wide range of in-house training. The Training Provider is Babington Business College. Expected duration approx 12 months.

Hours: Mon – Fri , 9.00am – 5.00pm

Pay: £100

Requirements: No formal qualifications required, however applicants should have good numeracy and literacy skills. An interest in the motor trade would be advantageous. Applicants should be willing to learn new skills and hard working to progress within the company. Due to the diversity of the role, applicants must be able to take on board a range of tasks.

Training: As well as an NVQ level 2 in Business and Admin, full on the job training will be provided, including; product information, customer service and systems training. The learning provider is The Source (Meadowhall Centre). Expected duration approximately 12 months.

Hours: 8.30am – 5.30pm, Mon – Fri

Pay: £95/week
(Staff uniform provided)

Requirements: Must be computer literate and have a good standard of English and Maths. Must be well presented as will be working in a professional environment, have a pleasant manner and be confident when answering the telephone and dealing with customers. Applicants registered at college or with a training provider would have an advantage.

Training: NVQ Level 2 in Business Admin. Training provider to be decided.

Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

Pay: £95 per week

Requirements: No formal qualifications are required, however a good level of numeracy and literacy is essential. Must have excellent customer service skills, be confident, organised, forward thinking, able to work under pressure and computer literate. An excellent telephone manner is essential. Applicants should be friendly, discreet, hardworking, eager to learn and willing to take challenges on board.

Training: NVQ Level 2 in Customer Service. On the job training will cover product information, diary management, in-house system and customer service training. The training provider is The Source (Meadowhall Centre). Expected duration approx 12 months.

Hours: 31 hours per week, Mon – Sat between 8.30am and 7.30pm.

Pay: £95

Requirements: GCSE A-C grades in Maths and English are required. Applicants must be computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, hardworking and reliable. Must be willing to learn, have a methodical and analytic way of thinking and pay attention to detail. Applicants must be self motivated, outgoing, able to complete tasks to deadlines, as part of a team and on their own initiative and manage their workload on a day to day basis. Confidence when making and receiving calls and good communication skills are essential.

Training: Customer Service / Administration NVQ Level 2. The training provider is Babington Business College. Expected duration approx 12 months.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week. Mon – Fri, 9.00am – 5.30pm.

Pay: £100 per week

Requirements: Must have GCSE A-C grades in Maths and English and knowledge of all Microsoft packages. Applicants must be efficient, able to work on their own and as part of a team, pay attention to detail, have good communication skills and telephone manner. Good time keeping is essential as is motivation and being willing to learn.

Training: NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration. The training provider is Babington Business College. Expected duration approx 12 months.

Hours: Mon – Fri, 9.00am – 5.00pm

Pay: £100 per week

Requirements: Must have 4/5 GCSEs at grade C+ including Maths, English and Science. Must be good at Maths. Any experience of Technical Drawing, Autocad or welding would be an advantage. Must be reliable, keen to learn and be interested in a long term career as a sheet metal worker. Should have a responsible and safety conscious attitude due to the nature of the job.

Training: Will do a Foundation course in Engineering plus ABC parts 1,2 and 3 (this takes approx 5 years and is equivalent to City and Guilds qualifications).

Hours: 8 am – 4 pm Monday – Thursday and 8 am – 12 pm Friday

Pay: National Minimum Wage

Requirements: Must have Maths and English GCSE at grade C+ or equivalent. Must have good hand to eye co-ordination. Must be able to prioritise work, with the ability to respond well to unplanned changes, good organisational skills and the ability to work to deadlines. Should be able to work in a team, with a flexible approach to work. Must be punctual and accountable and have a respectful attitude towards others.

Training: NVQ in Manufacturing Sewn Products, Technical Certificate and Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number (if necessary) through Huddersfield Textile Training on the company premises.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, 8am – 4 pm Monday – Friday

Pay: £135/week
