Apprentice Maintenance Engineer

To work for one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of instrumentation and control equipment, specialising in flow, temperature and pressure measurement products. The company’s main manufacturing facility in Sheffield 4 consists of Product Assembly, a Machining facility and Calibration Laboratories. The company are seeking to recruit a number of apprentices into the business in a variety of roles, who will join our skilled team in the production of high quality measurement devices. Your apprenticeship will initially cover all manufacturing aspects of the business eventually focusing on the Machine Shop activities of both manual machining and CNC machining, setting and programming. The majority of work involves the machining of stainless steel or brass bar in to small, precision components in small to medium batch quantities. The role requires good numeracy and literacy, dexterity with attention to detail, and the ability to work accurately from both written and verbal work instructions.

Requirements: Applicants should have completed or be working towards PEO level 2 in Engineering and be able to demonstrate a good level of literacy and numeracy. Applicants should have the ability to work as part of a team whilst also being able to work on their own initiative. Further, they should be keen to demonstrate their commitment through good time keeping and attendance.

Training: Advanced Apprenticeship NVQ 3 in appropriate Engineering related qualification, plus Technical Certificate. Therefore, from time to time there will be opportunities to progress within the company to such positions as: supervisor, technical sales or even management.

Hours: 7.30am – 4.30pm Mon – Thur & 7.30am – 12.30pm Fri

Administrator Apprenticeship

To work at a design company, located at Halfway (S20). The role is suitable for someone with a passion for IT. Will be required to carry out basic office administration duties such as faxing, filing and answering the phone. Will also work on spreadsheets and Word documents. The used by the employer is Apple Mac (full training will be given). The job role will also lead onto dealing with invoices and other related duties.

Requirements: Must have basic IT skills including Word and Excel. Apple Mac experience would be an advantage. GCSEs at grade D or above (or equivalent) would be beneficial. Must be enthusiastic, motivated and able to work on own initiative. Candidates must be prepared to work in a busy environment and be able to work as part of a team.

Training: Business & Administration Apprenticeship NVQ 2, delivered by STD/ESG Group. The duration of the Apprenticeship will be between 9 and 12 months.

Hours: Up to 39 hours/week.

Pay: £95/week

The duties and responsibilities involved in this role require the successful candidate to: answer the telephone in a professional and helpful manner; co-ordinate the post; meet and greet any clients; communicate verbally, by e-mail and by letter; enter confidential data onto a system with speed and accuracy; maintain the filing system; use Word and Excel; support and help with any other duties as required.

Requirements: Basic PC skills (Word/Excel) and knowledge of office equipment is required. GCSE grade A – C (or equivalent) desirable, but not essential. Qualifications in Business Administration and ICT would be beneficial. Must be reliable, motivated and serious about a future in business administration.

A Design for Life

Budding architects and designers take note – there’s a free course running in Sheffield this April that could be right up your street.

The Architecture For Everyone Project, which is run by the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, RMJM Architects, University of Sheffield School of Architecture & Sheffield Hallam University, gives young people aged 16-25 from black and minority ethnic backgrounds the chance to work on an exciting architecture and design project.

The project workshops will focus on Urban Sports & Activities, so you’ll be working alongside a Parkour/Free Running expert, Installation Artist, Architects, Designers & Landscape Architects to produce some design proposals, which will then be displayed at an exhibition in the city.

The project, which will run for five days between 12th-16th April 2010, will give you the chance to work closely with design professionals from the region and have the chance to take part in site visits, writing briefs and working on a design project.

Leaving Care Group Scoops Award

The Leaving Care Group has scooped the NHS Hull Community Impact Award at the latest Yorkshire & the Humber Celebrate Success Awards. The award recognises their efforts in showing young people who are in or leaving care in a positive light.

Sheffield Futures’ staff have supported the Leaving Care Group with organising the annual Star Awards – an Oscars-style event that recognises the achievements of looked after children & young people and care leavers in Sheffield.

Young care leavers are actively involved in the awards ceremony, as the video below shows (links to Prince’s Trust website).
