Hotels consumer gazoodles of water every year, for stuff like showers, guest water, restaurants, and laundry. They use so much that many hotel chains have been on the water reduction bandwagon for a while. I just came across a hotel brand that not only has embraced efforts to cut water, but is actively fundraising to support. Tablet Hotels represents luxury boutique hotels around the world and they've just launched a great event, the Tablet Screening Series in support of Charity:Water, a non-profit that provides clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Karl and I were chatting on this today and agree that Tablet + Charity:Water = Good.
"The Pope's Toilet"

This highly acclaimed gem with the bawdy name was an Official Selection at Cannes as well as Uruguay's submission to the Academy Awards (for those a bit put-off by the title, you can call it Les Toilettes du Pape).

This month, we're getting into the holiday spirit and helping those less fortunate. Admission to the film is $20 per person, with 100% of the profits going to charity: water, a non-profit organization providing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. For every ticket sold, we can bring clean drinking water to one person for 10 years. For your generosity, all attendees will receive a copy of Tablet10:Top Ten New Hotels 2008 (a $25 value).

We're also giving everyone a complimentary issue of Zoetrope: All-Story, the award-winning art and story quarterly published by Francis Ford Coppola. Among its contributing writers are Ethan Coen, Woody Allen, and Wes Anderson. Each edition is designed in its entirety by a leading artist, such as Gus Van Sant, Julian Schnabel, David Bowie, and coming in this winter's edition, Lou Reed. Plus, just in time for the holidays, Tablet patrons can receive 25% off new subscriptions! Click here to subscribe online and enter the discount code ZTH88.

Our pals at Film Movement keep the hits coming with "The Pope's Toilet." Or, El Bano del Papa. Or, Ahová a pápa is gyalog jár. Whichever title you choose, it's 1988 and a Uruguayan border town awaits the visit of Pope John Paul II. 50,000 people are expected, and the locals believe that selling food and drink to the masses will make them rich. Beto, a petty smuggler, decides to build a WC in front of his house and charge for its use. His efforts bring about unexpected consequences, and the final results will surprise everyone.

It all goes down Tuesday, December 16 at the Bryant Park Hotel. Sagatiba will be serving up the spirits, so come have a few drinks, support a great cause, and enjoy a truly unique film.
