Bananas are mistakenly named as "trees" due to its bulk, form and composition. These are actually herbaceous plants under the family of Musaceae.

Two kinds of bananas are cultured in the sultry areas. One is sweetly eaten in raw or vastly included in our desserts. Second, these bananas are only prevalent in South-East Asia, India and Jamaica, named as plantains. They’re commonly used in cooking vegetable-based dishes.

History of Bananas
Nurturing banana was dated probably back in 8000 BC and real evidence was found in Papua New Guinea. The location where Bananas were grown was in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Many bananas are still cultivated in other countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Originally bananas were discussed in books and were in the written content of the Buddhist just about 600 BC. In 327 BC, a voyager found the bananas in India who was named Alexander the Great. Just back around 200 AD, the earliest plantations was known to be in China.

The word banana originates in West Africa. The Islamic conquerors brought the fruit to the Middle East and afterwards it landed to Africa by the Arab Merchants.

All credits to the Portuguese immigrants who pioneered the banana cultivation in the Atlantic Islands, Brazil and western Africa, it has blasted in most areas of the world.

Sadly, the fruit did not become popular in Europe until the Victorian Era but only through commercial business.

Tip and Techniques-Growing Bananas
The cultivation requires around nine months for a Banana plant to turn out being fully grown and it must have a great amount of heed for it to be able to be raised to its complete use.

The growth span of the plant is more or less than 25 years. It develops starting in the stems which matures from the earth up termed rhizomes and it created suckers that advance from the main stem of the plant.
The pseudostem grows about 2-8 meters and the leaves reach up to 3.5 meters. A single cluster of bananas is produced of in each pseudostem. It dies and supplanted by a fresh one.

It requires a lot of water, enough fertilizer, rich sunlight and humid atmosphere for it to grow properly.

The land has to be loaded with nutrients and somewhat tart. It must adept to maintain the dampness so that roots filled with so much water will die quickly. If you are into tasty and spicy food, this style of cooking would be ideal for you as any meat that is prepared this way is well seasoned with spices such as pimento leaves and the hot scotch bonnet peppers. You might have seen it at your resorts or hotels as it looks similar to a plate of scramble egg. Most Jamaicans have this dish with boiled bananas, roast or fried breadfruit and boil or fried dumplings.

The escoveitch fish: This is prepared by frying the fish and then pouring a sauce which is made from hot peppers, vinegar and onions on top of it. This is also loved by many and most beach trips are not complete without some escoveitch fish and a festival or two. The next time you visit the city of Kingston you should take a drive to Hellshire Beach in nearby Portmore and sample this sumptuous meal.

Festival: This is a part of the dumpling family and is generally made in a long shape with cornmeal, sugar, spices, flour and water. It is then fried until it acquires a nice golden brown color and is served with any of the popular jerk dish or escovetich fish.

Soups: The majority of the Jamaicans love soup in any flavor and generally most families has to prepare soup for Saturday dinners. There is the pepper pot soup which is very spicy with callaloo, hot peppers, dumplings, yam, potato and more. Next, there is the pumpkin soup which is made with pumpkin, yam, dumpling, potatoes and meat of your choice, but mostly beef and chicken. Then, you have the popular red pea’s soup which you can get at any of the restaurants and roadside diners. These are not the only types, but would be enough to start with on your next visit.

Peanut porridge: This is also one of popular dish on the island and almost everywhere you go, you can find a street vendor selling it. Most people don’t start their day without having a bowl of peanut porridge and it is said that it makes them last longer at work with the energy that it provides. On your next visit to Montego Bay, stop at the corner of Juice Patties on St James Street and get a cup from one of the vendors on the street or in this fast food outlet.

Curry goat: This dish is a popular choice for any type of gathering, whether it is street dance, birthday party, corporate luncheon, weddings, funerals, you name it. If this authentic Jamaican cuisine is not served at most of these places it would seem as if a link is missing, it is usually served with a plate of white rice or rice and peas.

This is certainly not all the dishes that you will find, as one article cannot begin to describe everything. But make an effort to delight in any of the authentic Jamaican cuisine, you will have no regrets!

Jamaican Banana Bread Recipe

Next add the red onions and continue to cook until you can smell the onions and they are soft. Immediately add the ginger, flour, chicken broth and pineapples and blend together slowly then allow to heat to a slow boil (just about 8 minutes). Next add your turkey and stir until blended as well. Allow to heat again for another 10 minutes covered and then open and pop in the lemon juice, stir in and then close for a another 2-3 minutes. This is a great dish and goes well with potatoes and steamed rice.
