Using keywords to attract visitors to your Website

If you are thinking of blogging or building a website to earn some money then you need to know what the popular words and phrases that people enter into Google and other search engines each day. These phrases are called keywords and are extremely important when attracting people and traffic to your site or blog.

There are a number of online tools that can be used to view keywords online and these include Google Keyword Tool which is extremely informative as it lets you know how competitive a keyword is, the search volumes and it also suggests other alternative keywords for you to consider.

When using keywords be careful not to over use the same text as this makes the page difficult to read and it is widely believed that for a page to be relevant for a keyword the density for that word should be less than 5% otherwise some search engines such as Google might believe you have stuffed the pages with the phrases to try and obtain visitors and may well penalize you for this.

If you are interested in finding out how hard it is to rank well for a keyword then there is an online keyword difficulty checker which basically tells you how much competition there is online for your keyword. So if say you are thinking of building a website on genealogy the word 'genealogy' is a generic term and will have lots of competition but a more unusal phrase such as 'Scottish family history' will have less competition while a longer more unusual phrase such as 'Scottish family history of Bernard McTavish and his parents' will have hardly any competition. The aim though is to find a keyword that is used frequently but has little competition.

If you already have a blog or a website and are curious to know where you rank for a keyword then obviously you can search Google, Bing and Yahoo to see if you are near the top. To save you some time you can use a free tool to check your keyword position in Google.

If you are setting up a new blog or website if you can use a keyword in your domain name it will give your site a helping hand to attracting visitors who are hopefully going to earn you some money.

If you have ever wondered how your earnings compare against other peoples in the UK then there is a useful tool on the Institute for Fiscal Studies website.

You enter some data about the number of adults and children in your household, your household income and your council tax and it produces a graph which shows where you fit in. The graph is certainly a lot easier to understand than some of the documents produced by the Office of National Statistics.

Paywizard is another useful site which allows you to compare the wages you receive for doing your job against what other people earn for doing the same job as you in the same area as you. The data is useful in working out if you are being underpaid by your employer or if you are earning a higher wage than others in the same job as you.

Paywizard also have details of how much some celebrities and footballers earn which is quite interesting whilst at the same time depressing as some make more in a day than a large chunk of the UK workforce make in a year.

If you enjoy listening to music whilst writing then you can earn money by combining the two with Slice the Pie.

Slice the Pie allows music fans to become record labels and to make money scouting for new talent. All you need to do is visit Slicethepie and click on Scout Rooms and you will then hear a music soundtrack. You simply need to write a review of the track and give it a rating out of 10.

Tax on extra income

Earning extra money whether online or offline is great for your personal finances but remember that the taxman will want his share of it. If you have any self-employed income you should register with HMRC by the third calendar month after you started or you will face a £100 penalty.

However, remember that the first £6,035 of any income you make is tax free in the 2008-09 finanial year. Also if you incur any costs buying equipment such as a computer or stationery then these costs will be tax deductible as long as you have kept the receipts.

If you are earning less than £4,635 you can complete a CF10 from HMRC which may exempt you from having to pay Class 2 National Insurance contributions on your earnings.

If you join dooyoo and write a review of more than 150 words you earn 500 dooyoo miles (equivalent to £0.50), a further 15 dooyoo miles (£0.015p) each time someone reads your review and 1,500 dooyoo miles (£1.50) if your review is a Crowned review. A Crowned review is a review that is especially good or useful.

Obviously the more reviews you write and the better they are then greater the amount of money you will make.

I read an article in the paper today about how cash strapped mothers are using their home computers to earn extra income and that these mothers were now being referred to as mousewives.

Apparently a mousewife can get paid extra money for her family online by doing online surveys, mystery shopping, selling stuff on ebay etc with one in twenty mousewives making over £200 a month from their online activities.

The newspaper made it sound as though this was some new phenomenon but it has been going on for years and not just with housewifes. What about cash starved students, teenagers, people on low incomes, pensioners and all the other people who use the internet to try and boost their bank accounts. I'm sure there are a lot of housewifes using the interenet to make money but it just seemed strange that the reporter had decided to single them out at a time when the country is in recession and everyone is struggling for money.

There is a new cashback website called Cashbackkings that has just been launched.

Cashbackkings is similar to Quidco and Topcashback in that it offers to pay you 100% of the commission it receives from you shopping through their web portal. The big advantage of cashbackkings over some of the other cashback websites is that it has a highest cashback guarantee, so if you find a better cashback deal elsewhere on the internet they promise to at least match it.

Other positives about the new site are that the people behind it have been in the cashback business for several years through their other site Rpoints. Rpoints has long been recommended by various people including the BBC so the new site should be good.

Quidco sells itself as 'cashback cooperative' whereby those members who sign up to its services can receive cashback on any purchases they make through its shopping portal.

The shopping portal consists of hundreds of online shops including many large well known companies such as Carphone Warehouse, Tesco, Lloyds TSB, Dell and Boots as well as several smaller niche shops.

Essentially to earn your cashback you click on a link to the online shop, for example, Tesco and do your online shopping as usual. Tesco will then pay Quidco commission of a couple of percent of your total purchases and Quidco then pass this commission onto to you.

Unlike some cashback reward sites Quidco do not keep a share of this commission instead they pass it all on to their members. How do they make their money then? Well they charge a £5 annual admin fee which is deducted from your first payment. If you do not make enough cashback to cover they admin fees in a year then it is simply rolled over and they will not expect you to pay it.

The cashback on offer varies from shop to shop but Barclays are offering £125 for taking out house insurance through them but generally it will be much lower than this at around 2% or 3% of your total shopping bill. But if penny counts as they say and if you do any online shopping at all signing up to Quidco or another cashback website is a good way of saving some money.
