We’re pretty excited here at Get Social Conference to announce our first ever online scavenger hunt. We are giving away a $250 Apple Gift Card allowing you to buy an iPhone 4G or iPad, whatever you desire. Starting now, you can begin following the online clues for an opportunity to be entered in the grand prize.

The Rules

1. Need not be present to win.

2. Your entry will depend on your correct submission of the final scavenger hunt clue. A correct entry allows you to be entered in the drawing to win the $250 Apple Gift Card. You may only enter once correctly and will be notified of correct entry prior to drawing.

3. Winner of the GSC Hunt will be announced at the OKC Tweetup at 6:00 PM CST. Person has 30 minutes to claim their prize before it is forfeited to second place.

4. Scavenger Hunt entries will be allowed until 6 PM CST on Thursday, June 24th. Anything later isn’t eligible to be considered for the grand prize.

4. Not necessarily a rule but we would appreciate your promotion. So tweet, facebook, and talk about Get Social Conference happening Thursday, 6/24 in Oklahoma City. Registration and details are here. We’d also love for you to join us at the OKC Tweetup after the conference. You can do so by visiting the GSC website or at www.okctweetup.com.

Your first assignment should you choose to accept it is–

Is it still all about Location, Location, Location?

The mantra in real estate has always been, “Location, Location, Location!” Over the past year, since the advent of location-based apps such as Foursquare and Gowalla, it’s seemed the plugged-in community has adopted the location motto as its own. Predictions were made, and disputed, about how important these apps could be.

I resisted the allure for a while but succumbed to the new avenue for connection. I’m a sucker for connecting. After several months of using both Foursquare and Gowalla… here’s what I think about the potential and the problems:

Problems I see:

Spam abounds. (It’s possible to drive by a strip center slowly and “check in” to a dozen places in a few minutes.) I’ve “turned off” several people on either service who did this routinely and made my phone go nuts with their check in message. And their poor Twitter or Facebook friends! *shudder*

Stalker potential is high. Early on, I was enamored with the newness of it all and checked in to both services most everywhere I went. Then the sobering reality of just how much information I was giddily sharing with the known world made me pause… and rethink a bit. I still check in often, but not usually if I’m traveling alone. And I keep many of my check ins off of Twitter and FB…. only the connections I’ve accepted on the location services see where I’m visiting.

Reward factor is low. I’m the Mayor of 18 places on Foursquare. Yes, it’s true… 18. And the rewards for that, so far? Nil. Nada. Zilch.

Connection potential is limited. Yes, I can see the possibility of real-world connections happening because of online posting. That’s why I’m still using the services. What bothers me is that when I see someone has checked into St. Francis Hospital, for instance, there’s no mechanism through the service for me to say, “Hey, you OK? Need anything?” or, if they’ve checked into my favorite Mexican restaurant, to say, “Hey, ask for Melinda’s section, she’s fabulous!”

What I’d like to see happen, in order to make location-based services really take off:

Stop the spam. Limit the time between check-ins, perhaps? Reward frequency at the same venues rather than overall number of check ins?

Build actual rewards into the service… Oh, my… the potential here is incredible. Location based apps are the digital convergence of direct mail and intent-based web search. Take for example Pei Wei Asian diner… no dessert offered there. In Tulsa, one of their locations sits adjacent to a Maggie Moo’s store. When I check in to Pei Wei, I ought to get a coupon or offer sent to me from the app for 20% off my order THAT NIGHT at Maggie Moo’s next door. Why, oh why, don’t they do this? They know where I am, they know what I’m doing (location, intent) and the potential to offer me something that is timed perfectly and co-located is huge. Why limit the rewards to free fries for the “Mayor?” Seriously… the data they are developing on customer behavior is worth lots of money and can be leveraged in so many ways. Would bring new meaning to point-of-purchase advertising.

Add connectivity. Let me respond to the shout-outs of my friends. Actually foster real-world connection. What about a badge that’s earned any time 5 people simultaneously check in to the same venue? (the Lemming badge?) Or maybe a trigger for free fries if you and 3 of your friends all check in to the same venue within 20 minutes (long enough to get the ping, decide to go, and get in the door)?

Those are my thoughts… what did I miss and what do you think?

I have often said that being a blogger has been the best and most important career decision I have made, and it’s true. I enjoy writing and being a thought leader in my industry. Bloggers who are serious about putting out quality and interesting content often before major publications and newspapers do, work very hard to write and produce good information. It requires a lot of research, preparation, and creativity. For me, blogging it not about making money. It’s about building relationships and growing your personal and professional brand. Because I have worked hard to build my name and brand, blogging affords me a lot of benefits.

Networking. Blogging is a great way to meet with authors and speakers with whom you admire. You are able to connect with them and establish a relationship while interviewing them for a blog or website. I have been able to make and build relationships with some very influential people in my professional career as a result of blogging. Their insight and mentoring has changed my career path.

Media Access. As a blogger who has worked hard to build my brand, I have the ability to attend conferences and special events as media where I can blog, network, and interview presenters, attendees, and vendors. Of course, I have to put out articles and content as a result from attending the conference. It’s nice to be seen at events as a relevant and viable form of media.

Client Testimonials and Work Examples. A good blog post with comments and conversation aims to make a potential client or customer’s decision to hire you much easier. I am able to lead a prospective client to my site allowing them to view my work, my thought process, and insight into me and what I value. It’s a living resume or profile that goes beyond the usual work experience into your passions and revelations.

Special Blogger Access. I was able to plug in at SXSW and charge my labtop, iphone, and other electronics in a lounge specifically for bloggers at the South by Southwest Interactive Conference. The folks there treated the bloggers very well with live music, beer, breakfast, and some free goodies. I met and connected with some amazing folks while I was there while getting some work done at the same time.

Cool Stuff. There are times as a blogger that I have access to new technologies, products, and articles and publications. People want to know your opinion and will send you iphone apps, pokens, and other gadets to review or write about if you so choose. Before writing that review, consider how reviewing the newest gadget or book you received will impact your overall brand and image in the marketplace. And don’t forget to research and understand the FTC’s view on receiving and reviewing product as a blogger.

With blogging growing in popularity each day, your personal brand and your blog’s message is even more important. Building your following and relationships takes time, but the payoff can be more than what you expected.
