Traditions Renewed

New is old, and old is new again. Thus is the nature of fashion. Pulling the appropriate elements from previous designs and re-crafting them into something new is the art of the matter, and the designers at Glam Rock have a knack for doing it well.

The Glam Rock women’s two-tone model GR28031 from the Vintage Glam collection has several distinct characteristics that are interwoven to create a look that at once swoops back in time, but also stands firmly as a design for the here and now.

An oval case, measuring 40 x 30 mm, combined with orbicular teardrop lugs is the basis for this watch’s luxurious silhouette. The case is made of stainless steel and coated with yellow gold IP. Glam Rock’s familiar onion-style crown protrudes attractively.

Within the form-conscious casing is a white enamel dial, at the center of which is a textured pattern of dimpled diamonds. The centrally mounted, decorative hour and minute hands are coated in yellow gold IP to match the case. The Glam Rock font, used in the brand logo and to inscribe the dial with the collection name, is a script with throwback appeal. Most watch brands replace the Roman numeral IV (four) with IIII, generally to create a visual balance with the opposing numeral VIII. But watches in the Vintage Glam collection use the correct IV in the 4 o’clock position – point scored for being faithful to the Roman numeric system and bucking an erroneous trend.

Watches in the Vintage Glam collection are offered with several different types of bracelets and straps. The one chosen for this model is an integrated-link bracelet in trendy two-tone stainless steel and yellow gold IP. It closes by way of a deployant clasp. Not only does the bracelet match up well with the case in coloring, it also provides contrast: the case has antique qualities whereas the bracelet is quite modern.

The Moon and Stars of Bal Harbour

Orbiting the diamond cluster is a 24-hour-time track surrounded by natural mother of pearl, over which an additional 11 white diamonds serve as hour markers along with the Glam Rock crown logo at 12 o’clock. The chapter ring at the outside of the dial features small, delicate Roman numerals.

This three-hand watch (hours, minutes and small seconds) is driven by a quartz movement supplied by Swiss-based Ronda. Time adjustments are made by way of the onion-style crown. The stainless steel caseback is decorated, too, with a tortoise-acetate insert that looks good and feels smooth on the wearer’s wrist. Four screws hinge the caseback to the case, while on the front a coated mineral crystal protects the dial.

Many of the watches in the Bal Harbour collection come mounted on leather straps; the GR77061, however, is mounted on a polished stainless steel curb-link bracelet with a deployant buckle clasp. Sophisticated Luxury Defined

No glossary of terms cites a definition for “sophisticated fashion watches,” but if one did, the watches of Glam Rock would surely be in the description. Poised, and Ready for Action

Vintage styling is hot, and many modern watch collections include models that look to the past for inspiration. The Viceroy Communion women’s model pictured here is such a watch, with a case shape that echoes a popular look from the sixties and seventies: some call this shape tonneau, meaning barrel in French – indeed it is barrel-shaped – but others will notice its resemblance to the cushion-cased dive watches of the era.

However the shape is described, what’s for certain is that Viceroy’s sporty DNA is apparent all throughout this straightforward three-handed model. This watch in particular is the epitome of versatility: stainless steel case with black, white and silver details. The case is 35 mm in diameter, which is neither large nor small, meaning it does not fall into the trendy “oversized” category, but it is by no means dainty – it has wrist presence without exaggeration.

In the Pink

Johan Eric Herlev: Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication

Vivacity and Substance for the High-Spirited

A 30-minute and small-seconds counters appear within the central ring, which has a seconds track and accommodates the full length of the hour, minute and chronograph-seconds hands. One defining look of a ‘60s-era watch is overall simplicity and the dial of the Leaf is characteristically uncluttered. The dial material is black enamel, upon which long, painted purple hour markers are applied. Purple also frames the date window at 3 o’clock. It’s this addition of a bright color that lets us know the watch is decidedly modern and feminine.

Little else appears on the dial other than the brand name HAUREX Italy, centered just below “12,” and the collection name Leaf centered above “6.” The hands are stainless steel and coated with luminous paint. Like many Haurex models, the words Italian Design are written in small type at the bottom of the dial in the traditional way, which reminds us of the watch’s origins.

The 37 mm stainless steel case is a relatively modest size by today’s standards, though this watch does have a slightly larger appearance because of the thinness of the surrounding bezel. A slightly curved mineral glass is affixed over top, which adds to the throwback appeal. The case is round with short, dressy lugs that curve gently for a comfortable fit, and the knurled crown is easy to grip when you need to change the time or date. The mere 7.5 mm thinness of the case adds to the overall comfort and makes the watch easy to wear, even when it has to slip under a long sleeve.

At 18 mm wide, the grained black-leather strap with tang-style buckle matches the design perfectly and counterbalances the playful color with a refined finish.
