Five-Ride Transit Passes to be distributed to youth

The Mayor and Council’s Roundtable on Children and Youth will provide complimentary Greater Sudbury Transit passes to local youth this summer as an initiative to encourage more young people to ride public transit to local community programs and sports venues.

This is the fourth summer the City of Greater Sudbury has distributed Transit passes to youth. Recognizing the program’s popularity and the positive impact it had on youth transit use and the environment, Greater Sudbury City Council has extended the program for 2011.

2,500 passes will be distributed throughout the community, providing youth ages 12 to 24 with five free rides on Greater Sudbury Transit.
Passes will be distributed through local social service agencies and all branches of the Greater Sudbury Public Library.

Youth who are interested in obtaining a five-ride pass are asked to visit the nearest branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library. Passes will be released in two batches starting Monday, July 11 and Monday, August 8. Passes will be distributed on a first-come, first- served basis, at a maximum of two per person.

St. John Catholic Elementary School in Garson is the winner of the “Ugliest Schoolyard Contest”, presented annually by VETAC, Greater Sudbury’s Regreening Advisory Panel. The winning school receives a major cash donation from Xstrata Nickel, which has been the corporate sponsor for this contest over the past five years. In addition, the winning school receives supplies from several local businesses and expert advice to transform its schoolyard into a greener and healthier outdoor environment.

“We congratulate St. John School and we thank all schools for participating in this year’s contest,” said VETAC member Wayne Hugli, who spearheaded the contest in Greater Sudbury. “Our goal as a committee is to beautify the entire community, but we have a special dedication to our local schoolyards. Children should be free to play in a natural outdoor space. We are very fortunate to have the generous support of our local business community to achieve this important objective.”

With the support of Xstrata Nickel, VETAC also awards runner-up prizes each year, which provide financial assistance to create schoolyard green spaces. This year’s runner-up prizes go to: Walden Public School, Lively; École Ste. Thérèse, Val Thérèse; and Gatchell Public School, Sudbury.

Project planning has begun, and the schoolyard transformations will take place this fall.

While fortunately we may not be subject to severe earthquakes or natural disasters that occur in other parts of the world, we are not totally immune from events that could cause considerable upset and could threaten our lives – are we prepared?

Besides severe winter snow and ice storms and occasional high winds, flooding and power outages, the CPR rail line traverses the whole of the north shore of one of our major water bodies. A derailment and spilling of hazardous chemicals into Ramsey Lake would be a major disaster.
How we can prepare ourselves for most eventualities, natural or man made will the subject of a special presentation to be made by representatives of the City of Greater Sudbury Disaster Preparation Group to which you are invited and will take place on Sunday evening June 12th in the gymnasium of Minnow Lake Place at 7.00 p.m. Please inform your neighbors and encourage them to attend as well.
