A district court in Assin Fosu has remanded a 40-year-old mason into police custody for one week over his alleged involvement in a robbery attack that left a farmer with multiple cutlass wounds.

Kofi Awuakye appeared before the Assin Fosu District Court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, on charges of unlawful entry, unlawful possession and use of an offensive weapon, and causing harm.

The court granted the prosecution’s request to remand the accused to allow police to complete their investigations and ordered that he remain in custody until June 18, 2026.

Prosecutor Matilda Osaah Buabeng told the court that the complainant, Kwabena Atta, a 35-year-old farmer from Assin Fosu, was asleep in his room in the early hours of October 29, 2025, when unusual noises awakened him.

According to the prosecution, Atta found Awuakye allegedly inside the room, ransacking his belongings while armed with a knife.

When the complainant raised an alarm, the accused allegedly attacked him, inflicting multiple cutlass wounds on his right shoulder, back and other parts of his body before fleeing the scene.

The court heard that although residents responded to the distress call and attempted to apprehend the suspect, he managed to escape.

Atta was subsequently issued a Police Medical Report Form, received treatment for his injuries and later submitted the endorsed medical report to assist investigations.

Police said efforts to trace the suspect continued for several months until June 3, 2026, when the complainant reportedly spotted him at the Adiembra Lorry Station in Assin Fosu.

With the assistance of members of the public, Awuakye was arrested and handed over to the police.

During interrogation, the accused denied involvement in the alleged offences. However, police said investigations linked him to the attack, leading to his arrest and arraignment before the court.

The case has been adjourned to June 18, 2026.

Google is bringing Ask Gemini in Chrome to Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, marking a notable expansion of its AI-powered browser experience into more African markets. The company says the update is part of a broader effort to make Chrome more helpful, with its latest AI features first landing on desktop and iOS, while Android users can still activate Gemini by holding the power button in Chrome and other apps.

I have been following Google’s Chrome AI push closely, and this one matters because it moves Ask Gemini from being a niche feature in select regions to something far more relevant for users in this part of the world. In its Africa announcement, Google says Chrome is being reimagined with built-in AI to help people seek and understand information more easily, and that the rollout now includes Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

The African countries/locales included are 55 in total, namely:

Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, The Gambia, Togo, Tunisia, Western Sahara, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

For everyday users, the biggest change is the Chrome side panel. Instead of switching tabs and losing your place, Ask Gemini in Chrome lets you chat with a browsing assistant directly inside the current page. The tool can summarize long articles, help answer questions, create quizzes, and even recall pages you visited earlier so you can close tabs you were saving for later.

Google is also leaning hard into integration. Ask Gemini in Chrome can connect with services such as Gmail, Maps, Calendar and YouTube, allowing users to schedule meetings, check location details, ask questions about YouTube videos and even draft emails from the side panel without leaving the page they are on. The feature can also work across multiple open tabs, which should make it easier to compare information, consolidate research and even build tables across websites.

Another eye-catching addition is Nano Banana 2 inside Chrome. With this, users can transform online images directly from the side panel using a text prompt, without uploading files or opening a new tab. The company frames this as a way to make tasks like interior design planning or visual experimentation faster and smoother inside the browser itself.

Security, naturally, is part of the pitch. These AI features were built with safeguards to reduce risks such as prompt injection, and Chrome will ask for confirmation before sensitive actions like sending an email or adding a calendar event.

Ask Gemini in Chrome is rolling out to all Mac, Windows and Chromebook Plus users in supported markets, and is expected to continue expanding into more regions and languages through the year.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) has forecast thunderstorms and rain of varying intensity across many parts of the country on Thursday, June 11, 2026, with late-afternoon storms likely to affect forest and transition zones.

According to the 24-hour impact-based forecast issued by the Central Analysis and Forecasting Office, the morning will see persistent thunderstorms or rain in many regions. Mist or fog may also occur in a few places across southern Ghana, which could reduce visibility.

Later in the day, a mixture of sun and clouds will be observed. However, from late afternoon into the night, thunderstorms or rain are likely to affect some areas within the forest and transition zones.

Regional breakdown

In the coastal areas, Takoradi and Axim face the highest probability of thunderstorms in the morning, with a 60 per cent chance of occurrence. Accra, Kasoa, Cape Coast and Koforidua are expected to experience rain with a 40 per cent probability in the morning. Aflao will be mostly cloudy.

In the forest zone, Kumasi, Obuasi and Akim Oda are forecast to have a 40 per cent chance of rain in the morning, with thunderstorms likely in the evening. Ho and Koforidua will see sunny intervals in the afternoon before evening thunderstorms.

The transition zone cities of Sunyani, Techiman and Goaso are forecast to have a 40 per cent chance of thunderstorms in the morning and again in the evening, with sunny intervals in between.

In the northern sector, Bolgatanga and Nalerigu face a 60 per cent chance of thunderstorms in the morning, the highest in the country. Tamale and Yendi have a 40 per cent chance of morning rain, with sunny periods expected later. Wa faces a 40 per cent chance of thunderstorms in the morning.

Temperature ranges

Minimum temperatures across the country will range from 22 degrees Celsius in the coastal and forest zones to 23 degrees in the northern sector. Maximum temperatures will range from 30 degrees in parts of the coast to 34 degrees in the transition and northern zones.

Sea conditions

The state of the sea is forecast to be rough, with a level 2 warning issued. Fishermen and marine operators have been advised to exercise caution.

Issuing authority

The forecast was issued at 0500 GMT on 11th June 2026 and signed by Duty Forecaster Nancy Frimpong Asare. The public has been advised to take necessary precautions, particularly in areas where thunderstorms are likely, as rain and wind could cause localised flooding and reduce visibility on roads.

Residents in southern Ghana have been advised to be cautious of mist and fog in the morning, which could affect driving conditions. Those in forest and transition zones have been urged to prepare for possible evening thunderstorms. The general public has been encouraged to stay updated through official GMet channels for any changes in the forecast.

Opening the 5th West Africa Pharma and Healthcare Expo in Accra, speakers warned that despite carrying nearly a quarter of the global disease burden, the continent continues to rely heavily on imported medicines, vaccines, active pharmaceutical ingredients and medical devices.

Mr Anthony Ameka, Chief Executive Officer of the Federation of Africa Medical Equipment, Disposables and Devices Manufacturers and Suppliers (FOAMEDDMS), said Africa currently produced only about three per cent of global pharmaceutical output while importing between 70 and 80 per cent of medicines consumed by its population.

He said that the continent depended on imports for more than 95 per cent of active pharmaceutical ingredients used in pharmaceutical manufacturing and over 90 per cent of advanced medical devices and healthcare technologies.

“This dependence presents significant challenges for healthcare security, economic resilience and sustainable development,” he stated.

Mr Ameka noted that Africa’s expanding healthcare market offered opportunities for industrial growth, job creation and technological advancement.

He said meeting the African Union’s target of producing 60 per cent of the continent’s medicine requirements locally by 2040 would require stronger collaboration among governments, regulators, industry, academia and development partners.

Dr Paul Owusu Donkor, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH), in a speech read on his behalf, described local pharmaceutical manufacturing as a strategic necessity for national and continental health security.

He said recent global disruptions, including the COVID-19 pandemic, exposed the risks of excessive reliance on imported medicines and healthcare products.

“When countries closed their borders during the pandemic, many African nations experienced shortages of essential medicines and healthcare supplies. That experience demonstrated why local manufacturing is critical,” he said.

Dr Donkor urged governments to support local industries through investments in infrastructure, research and development, technology transfer, financing and workforce development.

He said the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) offered manufacturers opportunities to expand production, access larger markets and strengthen regional supply chains.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), in a speech read on behalf of its Chief Executive Officer, stressed that the growth of pharmaceutical manufacturing must be accompanied by strong regulatory systems and quality assurance mechanisms.

The Authority noted that regulatory excellence was essential for ensuring that medicines, vaccines and medical devices produced locally met international standards of safety, quality and efficacy.

Stakeholders highlighted the need to develop a highly skilled workforce to support manufacturing ambitions, citing shortages in pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, regulatory science and clinical research.

They called for stronger partnerships between industry and educational institutions to equip young Africans with expertise to drive healthcare innovation and industrialisation.

The three-day Expo, on the theme “Advancing Healthcare. Connecting Africa,” is organised by Astrovision Global FZCO, Dubai, and ACE Group under the auspices of the Ministry of Health.

Mr Praveen Singh, Chief Executive Officer of ACE Group, said the event had grown significantly since its inception in 2022.

“Our biggest competitor is ourselves. Every year, we challenge ourselves to do better than the previous year by improving the quality of exhibitors, attracting more professional visitors, creating more business opportunities, and delivering greater value to the industry,” he said.

Mr Singh said the 2026 edition was the largest and most international in the Expo’s history, attracting more than 100 exhibitors from countries including India, Turkey, the United States, Egypt, Italy, Ghana and several other markets. He said organisers expected between 4,000 and 5,000 professional trade visitors from Ghana and across West Africa over the three-day event.

Participants said Africa’s healthcare future would depend not only on expanding access to medicines but also on building a competitive pharmaceutical manufacturing sector capable of meeting the continent’s growing healthcare needs.

They expressed confidence that with coordinated investments and policy support, Africa could transform itself from a major importer of healthcare products into a global hub for pharmaceutical production and innovation.

Nearly 3,000 patients a day had to be cared for in hospital corridors or make-shift treatment areas rather in a bed on a ward in England last month, figures show.

It is the first time the data has been published and reveals the scale of the challenge facing the NHS in tackling what ministers say is “unsafe” and “unacceptable”.

Corridor care is when patients spend more than 45 minutes waiting for an appropriate place for their care and ministers have pledged to eradicate the practice by 2029.

In A&E this can be in corridors and side-rooms and make-shift treatment areas where there is not the proper equipment to keep them safe and maintain dignity.

On the wards, it is when patients have been waiting for a bed for 45 minutes or more.

The figures show during May there were 2,241 patients a day, on average, who experience corridor care, while on wards there were 669.

NHS analysis found that 20 trusts accounted for more than half of the cases of corridor care in A&E, while 20 trusts also accounted for more than two thirds elsewhere in hospitals.

Health Secretary James Murray said: “Corridor care is unacceptable, undignified and has no place in our NHS.

“That is why, for the first time, we are publishing this data to shine a spotlight on where the problems are greatest and ensure trusts get the support they need, with the vast majority of corridor care concentrated in a small number of organisations.”

Suzanne has taken her mother, who is in her 80s, to A&E in the East Midlands five times this year

Staff and patients have told BBC Your Voice of the problems they have experienced with corridor care.

Suzanne has taken her mother, in her 80s, to A&E in the East Midlands five times this year. Every visit meant more than 24 hours waiting in a corridor.

“Mum was one trolley in a sea of trolleys,” Suzanne recalls.

Confused and distressed, her mother was only helped to the toilet or given a drink because family were there, she says.

“If we hadn’t been, I dread to think what might have happened.”

Kathy’s experience was no better. Sent in by her GP one morning earlier this year with a suspected eye infection, she waited 36 hours in a chair, alone, in a hospital in the East of England before being told her blurred vision was caused by a brain tumour.

“It was horrendous… I got home and threw up. I was exhausted and broken.”

Nurses, who asked to remain anonymous, described burnout and impossible conditions.

One recalled a shift where the corridor was lined with patients. A body had to be wheeled past them on its way to the mortuary. Later, another patient went into cardiac arrest in the same corridor.

“Those frail patients watched chest compressions. There’s no dignity in that.”

Another nurse said her emergency department felt “like a war zone”. She described a patient who died unnoticed in the corridor.

“He’d started to stiffen because he had been there for so long, dead, with no-one noticing. It’s horrific to think someone’s loved one died with no one near them.”

Rugby legend Collins Injera has revealed that he would be open to coaching Kenya Sevens in the future. Injera explained that he feels a responsibility to pass on the knowledge and experience he accumulated during one of the most decorated careers in the sport’s history.

Download our Mozzart Sport app for more news

The former Shujaa star admitted that immediately after retiring, he wanted nothing to do with rugby as he struggled to adjust to life away from the game.

“I wanted nothing to do with rugby. I did not even attend training sessions, not even for my club. It was a difficult period because I was adjusting to a new way of life. At the time, I completely distanced myself from the sport,” Injera said in an interview with Jeff Koinange on Citizen TV.

However, time away from the game helped him rediscover his passion.

After spending about a year away, he gradually returned through the Legends by Nondies setup before becoming involved with Mwamba RFC, where he now attends training sessions and assists with coaching.

“These days, I am back training with Mwamba and doing a bit of coaching here and there. While I am also pursuing other interests, I would really like to share the knowledge and experience I have accumulated over the years,” he added.

Injera believes it would be unfair to walk away from rugby without giving back to a sport that shaped his life and career.

“It would be quite selfish of me to walk away with all that knowledge and insight. The game has certainly evolved, but I believe I still have something valuable to offer. Having played rugby from 2001 to 2023, I am sure some lessons and experiences can help the next generation,” he continued.

Asked whether he would answer a call-up to the Kenya Sevens technical bench, Injera left little doubt.

“If Shujaa were to call me, I would definitely answer. Giving back to the sport is something I set out to do this year,” he said.

His ambitions extend beyond the national team. Injera also hopes to mentor young players at his former school, Vihiga Boys High School, which has emerged as one of the country’s leading rugby nurseries.

“I have told myself that this is the year I must give back to the game that has given me so much. It is only fair that I do my part and help create opportunities for others to dream, just as rugby once did for me,” he averred.

Few players are better placed to nurture the next generation than Injera.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest sevens players of all time, he made his international fifteens debut for Kenya against Uganda in August 2006 before going on to represent the Simbas in various competitions, including the Rugby Africa Cup campaign in 2022.

His sevens journey began in Hong Kong in March 2007 and would span an extraordinary 15 years. During that period, he made 424 appearances on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, scoring 279 tries and amassing 1,443 points. His try tally ranks second in Series history behind only England and Great Britain’s Dan Norton.

Injera featured in 83 World Series tournaments, more than any other Kenyan player, and became renowned for producing memorable moments on and off the pitch. One of the most iconic came at Twickenham in 2015 when, after scoring his 200th Series try, he pulled a marker pen from his sock and signed both the match ball and a television camera.

His influence stretched beyond individual records. He played at two Olympic Games and four Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments, helping Kenya reach the semi-finals of the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai after scoring five tries during the campaign.

That same year, he and his elder brother Humphrey Kayange were nominated for the World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year award.

Another career highlight came in Singapore in 2016 when Injera and Kayange each crossed the whitewash in Kenya’s historic 30-7 victory over Fiji in the Cup final, securing the country’s only World Series title to date.

His final appearance for Kenya came at the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town, bringing the curtain down on a career that left an indelible mark on the sport.

Among his many achievements, Injera became the all-time leading try scorer on the World Series circuit in 2016, was inducted into the Rugby Town Walk of Fame, became Kenya Sevens’ all-time leading points scorer, made five successive Rugby World Cup Sevens appearances, and received the Order of the Golden Warrior (OGW) alongside Kayange in recognition of their contribution to Kenyan sport.

Parliament has partnered Junior Graphic to launch an educational series known as ‘Parliament and You’ aimed at providing parliamentary education for young citizens across the country.

The initiative, being implemented by the Parliamentary Services through the Public Engagements Department (PED) and Junior Graphic, the children-friendly publication of the Graphic Communications Group Ltd (GCGL), seeks to deepen young people’s understanding of parliamentary democracy, governance and civic responsibility.

The launch of the initiative at Parliament House last Tuesday attracted the leadership of the House.

Present were the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor; the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga; the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and the Clerk-to-Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.

The rest were the Managing Director of GCGL, Ato Afful; Editor, Graphic, Theophilus Yartey; Parliamentary Service Staff; pupils from selected schools in Accra; and staff of the GCGL.

The initiative is being run on the theme: “Promoting Parliamentary Education Among the Young”.

Valuable national asset

Launching the initiative, the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, touted the partnership between Parliament and Junior Graphic, as it aimed to deepen democratic governance in the country by investing in “one of our most valued national assets”.

He said Parliament remained the central institution of Ghana’s democracy, the House where the voice of the people was represented, where laws were made, and the government was held accountable.

Mr Ahiafor, however, said the strength and sustainability of such an institution depended not only on those who served in it today but also on how “well we prepare the next generation to understand and appreciate its work”.

As a result, he said, Parliament launched its corporate strategy for 2026 to 2030, which set up a five-year plan to guide Parliament and the Parliamentary Service in enhancing legislative effectiveness, institutional governance, transparency, accountability and service delivery.

One key development, the First Deputy Speaker said, was to improve access to parliamentary information and encourage inclusive participation, especially among young people and vulnerable groups in decision-making.

Mr Ahiafor was optimistic that the programme would complement school curricula and offer first-hand experience in the legislative process.

The Clerk-to-Parliament indicated that over the years, the Parliamentary Services, through the Public Engagements Department (PED), had undertaken several initiatives, such as public education programmes, community outreaches, social media engagements, town hall meetings and others, to strengthen the relationship between the citizenry and parliament.

However, Mr Djietror stated that citizens, particularly children, were unfamiliar with how parliament worked and how to engage effectively with democratic institutions.

He added that the ‘Parliament and You’ was one practical response to make parliamentary information more accessible, understandable and available.

“It is a child-friendly platform for young people to gain a practical understanding of parliament in a way that is engaging, relatable, educational and enjoyable,” he said.

Create opportunities

Mr Djietror said across the world there was growing recognition that children should not just be recipients of policies but participants in shaping them.

“This commitment aligns with Parliament’s agenda which promotes transparency, accountability, inclusiveness and citizens’ participation,” he said.

Leadership

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, said the Majority Caucus welcomed the initiative and supported all such efforts that built parliamentary democracy.

He stated that there was a need to build an edifice of citizens who would defend Parliament and democracy any day it was challenged.

Mr Afenyo-Markin was optimistic that the “Parliament and You” educational initiative would be relevant in helping to address the perceptions and realities of parliamentary procedures and practices for the citizenry.

“Through the Junior Graphic, Parliament will now walk into classrooms, sit at breakfast and travel on school buses and find its way into the homes of children across Ghana every Wednesday.

“The Parliament that once seemed distant and complex will become familiar, and our children will be able to read and understand the powers, functions and procedures of Parliament,” the Minority Leader said.

No easy endeavour

The GCGL MD said the company was in the business of producing high-quality newspapers for high learners to enrich their knowledge.

Mr Afful added that GCGL would continue to support initiatives such as ‘Parliament and You’ with information that readers could trust, make informed decisions with, and set the national agenda.

He explained that the company, therefore, was proud to partner Parliament to further enrich Ghana’s governance architecture and “make us a better nation with informed people”.

He, however, acknowledged that achieving such ambition was not an easy endeavour to sustain and therefore courted Parliament’s support for the initiative.

In spite of financial constraints, Mr Afful said GCGL continued to support initiatives such as the “Parliament and You” with trusted news to help people and institutions make informed decisions.
