Bad Cops In Japan

Anyone who reads Japantoday.com can't help but notice the string of crimes committed BY police officers themselves! I like getting the weird news from Japan Today, but the posters and moderators usually leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. I get the feeling that people are just itching to turn every single incident into proof that this country is headed to hell in a hand basket. I mean, isn't most the world in the same point right now? Anyway... here are a few recent "incidents"

Cop urinates from a JR platform.

Not a cop, but apparently peeing is becoming a problem in Japan. Click here for the "truck driver pee" story.

Cop arrested for filming up high school girl’s skirt in Yokohama

Saitama cop arrested for assaulting girl on street

Cop arrested for breaking into female cop’s apartment in Chiba

And that's just recent news! A simple search turns up these stories:

Is this happening in other countries as well? Of course it is, but I feel like the pettiness of the incidents in Japan just shows you how a comparatively pampered country it is. I'm betting in other countries cops are getting arrested for murder, bribery, and other serious crimes. In Japan it seems to be for incredibly stupid things. Am I right?

Personally (after almost 20 years here) I have never had a real problem with police officers. I've never been stopped or asked to show my ID. I have been frustrated at how slow they are to respond when something happens, but I've never been a direct victim of their conduct or misconduct.

Your thoughts?

"I'm the best at what I do. But what I do isn't very nice." - Logan/Wolverine, describing his amazing ability to... (GULP!) kill.

Since I was a kid I've envied Logan and his SNIKT! claws. He is the hero we love because despite his innate goodness he is capable of killing. Cathartically we love how he takes on human garbage at their level.
When I heard they were making a movie I was disappointed to find out that Dougray Scott had gotten the job. He felt to clean cut for me. Luckily for the then relatively unknown Hugh Jackman (and future Jackman fans) Scott got tangled up busy shooting MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 and had to leave the project. In steps Hugh. At 6 foot 3 he was even bigger than the 6 foot Scott. I wondered how they would get him to look like the little scrapper that Logan is in the comics. After all, according to the Marvel Comic Universe is supposed to be only 5'3".

Anyway... the movie is slated to hit the screens on May 1, 2009. Check out the trailer below and visit the WOLVERINE blog for more info!

Badr Hari Vs Remy Bonjasky

I saw the fight on TV last night. The Moroccan Badr Hari was up against Remy Bonjasky, nicknamed The Flying Gentleman, from the Netherlands. Badre was pretty much dominating the fight but got a bit too zealous and continued to batter Remy even after knocking Remy down. Remy fell, and the referee stepped in to protect the fallen fighter. Badr should have walked back to his corner to wait for the count but instead took advantage of Remy's prone position and through 2 punches -- which did little if any damage -- and one kick which cost him the fight. Basically Badr was out of control and it looked like he was going to even physically challenge the ref, but the ref finally got Badr to back away to his corner. They awarded Remy 5 minutes to recover and after some deliberation and a short scolding penalized Badr with a yellow card. The doc stepped in and after examining Remy announced that Remy had double vision and could not continue. At that point, the ref disqualified Badr Hari for unsportsmanlike conduct. Remy Bonjasky was the new champ! He shed tears of joy and I noticed one of the female announcers crying too -- but my wife assured me this was just theatrics.

Personally I thought that Badr should have been disqualified as soon as he laid his hands and feet on the fallen Remy. But in all fairness to the fighters' skill, Remy did not win that fight. It was never his to win. It was Badr Hari's to win or lose and he lost it.

On a final note, the wikipedia entrees on both these fighter suck. I think the writers may be punch drunk themselves.

Went out to see Fatblueman tonight at SHOOTERS. We ordered a Burrito Steak something or other but they accidentally served it to Daichen, who was sitting at the same table who had also ordered the same thing but -- through no fault of his own -- did not even have a check to show for it. When they realized the mix up there was no more steak left. So we got a pizza on the house. The waiter promised it would be there in 10 minutes. Of course that turned into 30 minutes. In the end... it took us over 2 hours to get our food. Does SHOOTERS suck? Nope. Just a bad screw up that made our food experience... crappy. But Fatblueman was great!! And we got to see some pretty funny dancing. 2 chubby black guys were doing some dirty dancing and it reminded me of the straight guys who start thinking they just might be gay after they watch a football game together.
