The so called "Dragan" effect is a technique that is usually made through photography with special lights and some soft post production. It is an effect that relies on heavy/extreme (but specific) contrasts. The technqiue itself is pretty easy, but it is pretty nice if you pay attention to some basic things.

The effect is a little "plastic" and looking unnatural, but thats the way why people look at it twice. As a basis mostly portrait photos are used where it looks best. The original art of this comes from Andrzej Dragan. See link to his website to the right.

GAP stands for "GIMP Animation Package" and like its name says it's a package of plug-ins for gimp to create and work on animations. That's the actual reason for this new tutorial. In Reitermaniac's tutorial the animated parts of the radar are duplicated, organized and rotated manually. No doubt a very exhausting work, which can be done by GAP. Besides it makes it possible to create more frames without any additional effort. This way the animation gets smoother and we can put more effort into the design.
Enough of talking! I hope you'll have much fun and motivation in this tutorial!

    <total>0</total>

The smudge painting technique is generally an nice way to create very beautiful paintings based on real photographies. In this technique you're mainly using the smudge tool of GIMP to manually smear/smudge parts of the photo to make it look painted (we've a useful tutorial on the site too!, see link below in the "rules"). The task of this contest is to create such a smudge painting on a photo of your choice! Any photo is possible, however, animals and people are always a very good way to start with ;) Also you can create 3 different paintings if you want and upload them all to our contest system, so you can try some things out.

This tutorial shows a technique to convert a portrait photo of a person into a text-portrait, where the text itself should act as the silhouette of the person.

Contest: Create your own GIMP 2.8-Splash Screen!

    <total>10</total>

A so-called *splash screen* is an image that is shown when launching an application/program on your computer. GIMP is using a standard-splash screen too, but it is pretty easy to change it to another one by yourself. Of course you have to create such a splash screen by yourself now for the upcoming version of GIMP (which will be 2.8) :) Thats what this contest is about. Make your very own splash screen and upload up to 3 of them to our contest system. If one of the submitted splashes is great there is also a chance to have it included as new standard splash-screen or maybe for development-versions of GIMP! However the developers will decide this and we don't have influence on this!
