Sarà proiettato tra breve un bel film documentario, il primo ad essere realizzato dalla loro morte, sulla vita e il lavoro degli Eames. Sono sicuro che in Italia non sarà facile vederlo proiettato, ma spero comunque si riuscirà a noleggiarlo o comprarlo via Internet. Il film è il risultato del montaggio di vario materiale filmato e sarà narrato da James Franco. In anteprima il 18 novembre a New York, Los Angeles e altre città degli Stati Uniti.

Nonetheless, I’d like to highlight this thing, because I think this new decision of the government representing me (not with my vote, anyway) is dangerous for my job and my life. Nowadays, I live my life exchanging knowledge and news, and such a rule will undoubtedly kill any attempt of fully doing that. We will be in the absurd impossibility of criticize anything, even in case of a big evidence, and this is really bad. Think about how many reviews you check before buying an item, before booking an hotel room. Now think about the fact that these information could disappear forever. It’s not a reassuring thought, is it? Think about it and spread the word.

3D printers are becoming more and more popular and affordable. Maybe my friend Marco is right when is saying that in the future we will just print our own furniture, who knows?

Who does research, today? Is it the company, the designer, the manufacturer?
Nowadays, it seems that very few companies can afford a proper research on materials/technologies/processes, so the ones who can’t have two choices: not doing research or letting the designers doing it. The point is that if the former option is bad, because it means that the company has no interest in research (that is the same thing in not having interest in design, in my opinion) the latter sometimes is even worse, because the company with no money to afford a research won’t pay the designer for doing it. So, unless the company is wealthy and trusts in research as a value, this would be entirely a responsibility of the designer (unless he does not think it’s good to do research, but then he’s not a designer, it would be a contradiction in terms). Manufacturers are in the same position of designers, since they can produce items even if they are not research-driven, but sometimes they experiment on some new technological variation. With a difference: a good supplier is not measured by the way he does research, a designer should. The point is that even if he should, it doesn’t mean he IS. We have different scenarios: some designers suggest greatest companies doing research, companies do it and everything is ok. Or he could knock the door of a not-so-wealthy company, that will implicitly oblige him to do research at his own expenses (and forgetting getting paid for that, even if the research will prove itself a success). The worst scenario is that designers start thinking about the fact that, research or not, they can get paid. The research is rarely perceived as a value by the customers, so a designer could think there’s no reason for spending efforts, time and money in doing a research that won’t be seen as a plus by companies, especially when the designer itself has some troubles in getting money for paying loans. This, added to the scarcely profitable job that being a designer seems to be today, could led research to slowly disappear from our vocabulary, or left to whom can afford it, among designers, manufacturers and companies. Only money AND commitment could allow research, and this means that entrepreneurs and designers must come back to work together to produce culture, and not splitting the whole production process into little parts/operators, everyone unaware of the other’s job. I never understood completely what Mari used to say years ago about designers and the loss of their own products, now everything seems clearer. You agree?

Chi fa ricerca, oggi? Le aziende, i designers, i terzisti?
Oggi, sembra che davvero poche aziende possano sostenere una giusta ricerca su materiali/tecnologie/processi, quindi quelle che non possono hanno fondamentalmente due scelte: non fare ricerca, o lasciare che siano i designers a farla. Il problema è che se la prima opzione è male, perchè implica che l’azienda non ha intresse nella ricerca (che è la stessa cosa di non avere interesse nel design, a mio modo di vedere), la seconda è anche peggio, perchè l’azienda che non aveva soldi per fare ricerca, non pagherà sicuramente il designer per farla. Quindi, a meno che le aziende siano ricche e credano nella ricerca come valore, questa sarà interamente una responsabilità dei designers (a meno che questo non creda sia giusto ricercare, ma in questo caso non parliamo di un designer, sarebbe una contraddizione in termini). I terzisti sono nella stessa posizione dei designers, perchè possono produrre anche se non sono frutto di ricerca, ma qualche volta sperimentano qualche nuova variante tecnologica. Con una differenza: un buon fornitore solitamente non è valutato a seconda del modo in cui fa ricerca, un designer dovrebbe. Il punto è che anche se dovrebbe, ciò non vuol dire che lo SIA. A questo punto abbiamo diversi scenari: alcuni designers propongono un tema di ricerca alle più grandi aziende, queste ci credono e tutto va bene. Oppure potrebbero bussare alla porta di aziende non così abbienti, che lo obbligheranno implicitamente a svolgere la ricerca a proprie spese (e dimenticandosi di essere pagato, anche nel fortunato caso in cui la ricerca avesse esito positivo). Lo scenario peggiore è che i designers inizino a pensare al fatto che, ricerca o meno, verrebbero pagati comunque. La ricerca è raramente percepita come un valore dall’acquirente, quindi il designer potrebbe pensare che non c’è assolutamente motivo per spendere fatica, tempo e soldi nel fare una ricerca che le aziende non vedranno mai come un plus, soprattutto quando questo esborso viene affiancato alla difficoltà a pagare le rate di un mutuo. Questo, aggiunto alla scarsa redditività che essere un designer sembra implicare oggi, potrebbe condurre la ricerca a sparire lentamente dal nostro vocabolario, o lasciarla a coloro che se la possono permettere, che siano designers, aziende o produttori. Solo investimenti E passione possono permettere la ricerca, e questo significa che imprenditori e designers devono tornare a lavorare insieme per produrre cultura, e non suddividere la totalità del processo produttivo in piccole parti/operatori, ognuno inconsapevole del lavoro degli altri. Non avevo completamente capito Mari quando anni fa parlava del mestiere del designer e della perdita del suo stesso prodotto, oggi tutto mi sembra più chiaro. E a voi?

My recipe is a bittersweet gelée of prawns, pineapple and ginger. Here an excerpt of the recipe (just italian, sorry):

AGRODOLCE DI MAZZANCOLLE CON SOVRASTAMPAGGIO AL LIME

INGREDIENTI:
- 600gr. di mazzancolle fresche
- miele (a me piace il miele forte, quindi opterei per un miele di castagno, ma ovviamente potete scegliere quello che preferite o che avete già in casa)
- due grosse cipolle dorate
- un ananas medio, ben maturo
- una radice di zenzero di medie dimensioni
- 10 gr. di gelatina in fogli
- sei grossi limes
- rhum giovane
- stampini per muffins in silicone
- aceto di vino bianco
- olio extravergine di oliva

PREPARAZIONE:

Mazzancolle
Togliete la testa ai crostacei (potrete usarla per preparare ottimi brodetti), incidete la parte inferiore della restante porzione e passateli velocemente in acqua bollente per poi tuffarli in acqua fredda (serve a sfilare meglio il carapace). Una volta ben puliti, saltateli in una padella antiaderente insieme con il miele e un pizzico di sale, levateli dal fuoco quando il miele inizia a scurirsi e metteteli da parte.
Ananas e zenzero
Pulite l’ananas, le cipolle e lo zenzero e riducete tutti questi ingredienti a pezzetti. Fate appassire leggermente per prima la cipolla in una padella bassa ben oleata, poi incorporate il resto. Aggiungete due cucchiai di aceto e lasciate cuocere a fuoco medio, mescolando fino a che il tutto non si sarà asciugato, e mettete da parte anche questo composto.
Gelatina
Ammorbidite i fogli di gelatina in acqua fredda. Nel frattempo, scaldate in un pentolino il succo dei limes, mezzo bicchiere di rhum e 300ml di acqua. Strizzate la gelatina e scioglietela nel succo caldo mescolando bene.
Stampaggio.
Negli stampini per muffins versate in questo ordine: fondo di gelatina, una o due mazzancolle, trito di ananas e zenzero, ancora gelatina. Mettete in frigorifero per almeno due ore e servite.

ABBINAMENTO VINO:
Questo piatto ha un sapore molto complesso e articolato, quindi io gli abbinerei un vino strutturalmente importante, che riprenda le note fruttate della ricetta: un venetissimo Amarone, con il consiglio di lasciarlo ossigenare bene prima di servirlo. Se volete essere davvero arditi, provate un Reciòto: ha lo stesso bouquet dell’Amarone, ma non ha ancora completato la sue fermentazione, quindi risulta più dolce. Mal che vada lo riciclerete con il dessert!
