Nearly two-thirds of Egyptian men admit to having sexually harassed women in the most populous Arab country, and a majority say women themselves are to blame for their maltreatment, a survey showed Thursday.

The forms of harassment reported by Egyptian men, whose country attracts millions of foreign tourists each year, include touching or ogling women, shouting sexually explicit remarks, and exposing their genitals to women. “Sexual harassment has become an overwhelming and very real problem experienced by all women in Egyptian society, often on a daily basis,” said the report by the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights.

Egyptian women and female visitors frequently complain of persistent sexual harassment on Egyptian streets, despite the socially conservative nature of this traditional Muslim society.

Shocked, I tells ya.

Starting immediately, uniformed and plainclothes police will routinely patrol restaurants to kick out known criminals.

The Restaurant Watch program is similar to the bar patrols police already do to weed out undesirables, Supt. Warren Lemcke said.

“It is to send a clear message to people involved in organized crime and gang activity they are no longer welcome,” said Lemcke.

Sounds good on paper, I suppose, but when Vancouver announced this yesterday, the whole thing becomes a farce.

The complaint filed against the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association and Civil City commissioner Geoff Plant claims the program, established in May, 2000, to patrol the downtown area and address “street disorder,” further marginalizes a population that already struggles with poverty, addiction and disabilities.

The complaint asserts that by telling people sleeping or loitering on the street to “move along,” and by identifying and monitoring “undesirable” people, the security guards acting as downtown ambassadors impair the dignity of aboriginal people and people with disabilities who comprise a disproportionate number of the city’s homeless and addicts, and deny them equal access to public space.

So now some thug gets tossed from a restaurant (providing he goes in at all, given the signage) and that restaurant burns down under mysterious circumstances a few nights later. No skin off the thug, who had nothing more than a brief moment of embarrassment to deal with, while the poor restaurant owner loses his livelihood. Nice.

And while Fat Tony is figuring out where to get his next dose of Marinara, people shopping or pushing strollers have to contend with streets covered in filth, drunken harassment, puddles of biohazard and much more. All in time for the world to watch during the 2010 Olympics. Not to mention that those on the streets are once more left on the streets, instead of being put in rehab or social housing (which these poverty pimps are forever going on about, just to keep themselves in a job. no good for them to be on the streets!). And Fat Tony gets a little bit richer keeping the indigent hooked on his crack.

Excellent planning, folks.

The devout Christian registrar who won a landmark legal battle over her refusal to carry out gay ‘weddings’ has spoken for the first time about the devastating campaign of bullying she suffered at the hands of her politically correct colleagues.

Lillian Ladele says she was treated as a ‘pariah’ because her traditional values were at odds with the dogmatism of equalities-obsessed Islington Council.

‘This experience has shattered me,’ she said. ‘It has been so overwhelming. For more than two years of my life I was treated as though I was full of hate, which is just not me at all.

‘All I ever wanted was to have my beliefs respected, just as I try to respect the views of others, even if I don’t agree with them.’

I have such inconsistent views when it comes to things like this. Like, I don’t think a registrar should have to marry same-sex couples if they held the job before the law changed. But, on the other hand, I feel that pharmacists have an obligation to provide the morning after pill - though NOT the abortion pill, RU486. Doctors should not have to perform abortions. I guess these are still issues that I have not completely worked out for myself, in my own mind. But I’m glad this woman won her case.

That said, I would like to take director Peter Berg out to the parking lot behind the cinema and beat his ass to a pulp. Why? Because he is a television director who has been given a shot at movies, and thinks he will be taken more seriously if he uses fancy camera work that makes people vomit. As much as I was enjoying the movie, I had to keep my eyes closed for nearly half of it. Berg decided he would have more credibility if he got “arty” and made the camera spin and slant all over the place. Why is the necessary? Why do directors feel they have to actually nauseate their audiences in order to appear cutting edge?

I imagine my main tasks will include getting dirty, dealing with all things related to poop, and picking ticks out of my dog. And possibly out of her dogs, too. For all I know it will turn into some sort of Marilyn “Simian Rights Now!” Churley fantasy with all of us picking ticks out of each other! So long as John is making his world-famous margaritas, I really won’t complain! I suppose the hardest part will be having to wake before I normally go to bed. Farm life is well beyond the comprehension of this city slicker. Hence the Paris comparison.

In all reality, it’s not indentured servitude. As you all know, June was an ass-kicker of a month for me, rendering me crippled with debt and personal loss. I have had to downsize my life considerably, though I have also made wonderful contacts and picked up plenty of writing work as a result. Thanks! There was originally a plan in place for me to spend the first week of August with Beth, but due to circumstances, I felt there was no harm - in fact there was much benefit to be had - in spending more time far from the filth and din of the city. I’m using this as an opportunity to escape, yet still get things accomplished. I have a stack of assignments to take with me, which means I’ll have a bit of an income while I’m there. My body looks forward to the opportunity of heavy farm work - it’s like the gym, but with added Vitamin D! So with the Donovans’ blessing, I am taking over the spare room for five weeks. Yup - five weeks!

On Tuesday morning I will pack up the freshly-immunized Bug and board a plane to Kansas City. Back in the old days, before air travel was the norm, I guess I would have had to click my heels and hope for the best.

Fear not, readers and listeners, for the hot pink laptop (which matches my boots) will be accompanying me, meaning Girl on the Right and Brass Balls Radio will continue live on location in Kansas. You’ll get to hear all about my exploits in rural farming, and with any luck, Beth will take a video or two to prove my ineptitude, which will be posted for your delight and delectation.
