Class Description

Breakfast first! (Monday - September 12th)
In this introductory class, we will learn the importance of our first meal of the day, make wonderful, healthy smoothies and whole grain muffins, and be introduced to basic Food Safety principles and Knife Skills. Hands on prepping of fresh veggies for use in a healthy stock for the next class.

Soup it Up! (Monday - September 19th)
We will make a hearty veggie and grain soup, along with a crusty soda bread. Conversation about time management and organization in the kitchen. To learn about seasonality, we will take a little trip to a local farm, to see all the bounty we will use in the next class. Discussion about food history, sharing of family recipes, and meatless meals for economy and health.

The glory of Pasta! (Monday - September 26th)
We will make Fresh Basil pesto, and learn about some fun equipment! We will also roast fresh, seasonal vegetables and then enjoy some pasta and bruschetta! On this night, we will talk about the importance of whole grains, and portion sizes. More conversation on environmental impact and health regarding vegetarian meals.

Oh Ginger!(Monday - October 3rd)
We will prep and roast pork, make an aromatic sauce, and prepare vegetables and noodles for a wonderful bowl of tasty goodness! Conversation and demo will include fresh herbs and seasonings.

Salad for dinner! With tasty dressings, of course! (Monday - 10/10)
Who doesn’t love a salad for dinner? We will identify greens, make homemade dressings, and whole wheat pita chips. Along with some talk about cheeses, we will discuss our game plan for the final class dinner

Finale!(Monday - October 17th)
We will prepare a meal to remember, as we review, share and laugh together around the table. Anything is possible!!!

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria is hosting its 15th Annual “A Taste for Carpinteria” Sunday October 16th 2011 from 1pm-4pm at 5315 Foothill Road, Carpinteria CA 93013.

A Taste for Carpinteria is a major fundraising event for Girls Inc. Carpinteria. Last year, over 500 participants, vendors and sponsors came together to celebrate and support STRONG, SMART, BOLD girls and young women of the Carpinteria Valley. This year, renown Chef, Michael Hutchings will lead a group of local restaurants who will serve delectable and tantalizing tastes of their delicious culinary creations along with wine from local vineyards and our own local brewery will be featured, while guests peruse the silent and live auctions selections which will include incredible items such as a 2 hour sunset cruise for you and up to 147 of your closest friends aboard the beautiful Condor Express.

This favorite and fun event benefits local girls and young women ages 5 to 19 by providing funding for essential programs that empower them to realize their potential, gain confidence, learn new skills and exchange ideas in a safe, friendly and fun environment.

These programs include project BOLD, Friendly PEERsuasion, Media Literacy, Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy, and Operation SMART. In addition to these already great programs provided by Girls Inc, this year, Girls Inc is looking to bring Eureka to Carpinteria. Eureka is a three-year program that takes the “whole girl” approach (strong, smart, bold) while expanding their sense of what is possible for the future. During the first two summers, girls spend four weeks on a college campus participating in hands-on activities in math, science, technology, sports, personal development, college readiness, and careers. The third summer, girls participate in a four week paid internship in a career field of their choice hosted by successful professional women. 2011 Summer Camp Registration Now Open

Back with a full line up of action-packed summer programs, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria will offer everything from fitness and health to financial literacy. In Native Girls, campers in kindergarten through fifth-grade can spend whole or half-days participating in Operation SMART, field trips, a campout, animal care, arts and crafts, games and sports, gardening, computers and much more.

Girls in middle and high school can enjoy How it all Connects!, a free program that includes culinary arts, mechanics, woodworking, fitness, community service, college readiness and Operation SMART. Girls Encourage and adventure sports program for ages 12 to 14, launches this summer with two days of adventures each week for eight weeks. This activity is free to all girls participating in the Girls Inc Group Mentoring Program.

Finally, week-long volleyball and basketball camps will be held during the month of July.

Ready or not, in just a few more weeks we will be hearing the refrains of “Have a great summer!” as students happily leave school for a summer vacation that stretches ahead of them with all the promise and excitement that only a child’s imagination can generate. While some families don’t need to worry about summer care, many more do. That is why Girls Inc. creates a variety of summer camps that will serve as a safe place for girls to go while they’re out of school and their parents are at work, and will educate, energize and empower them as well. "Water Girls" selected for 2009 National Girls Inc. Corporate Camp for Entrepreneurs

The Carpinteria Girls Inc. "Water Girls" (Karina Jougla, Erika Sanchez, Crystal Santana, Christian Santana, and Mariana Vega) were selected to participate in the 2009 National Girls Inc. Corporate Camp for Entrepreneurs. The "Water Girls" designed a water and money saving product: a chart that gives information to the consumer on how much water is used proportional to the type of showerhead they are using and a calendar booklet to record the total minutes showered. A consumer will be able to find out how much water was used and translate that into money spent. The product will also be available in Spanish and will be available locally. In addition to designing the product, the girls also had to provide a business plan detailing their target market, promotion and advertising mediums, start up costs, financing options, operating expenses and cash flow projections. The profits from their business will go to Girls Inc. of Carpinteria for scholarships and new programs.

The "Water Girls," along with their advisor Asa Olsson, were flown to New York, spent a week visiting women-owned businesses, and rang the closing bell on Wall Street, July 10th. You can view their presentation online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAMkaUrdgZE

Jessica Rodriguez - Awesome Kids Award Recipient

"I'm determined to obtain my goals and am not easily wavered." Committed, capable and intuitive are also words that well describe Jessica and the qualities that will serve her well in life. S.B. County Kids Network recognized and awarded Jessica at a luncheon in Solvang. There Jessica, through PowerPoint, talked about her life, and how being born with Spina Bifida has never stopped her from having her voice be heard. Jessica's future is in marine biology with a focus on underwater research. Her zest for science stems from her early years as an active participant in the S.M.A.R.T. (science, math and relevant technology) program at Girls Inc., which in turn led her to become a member of M.A.S.C. (math and science connection) during her middle school years. Jessica is also involved in campaigning to banish smoking in PG13 rated movies. Jessica's future is clear as she claims, "I will become a marine biologist! The oceans are the perfect environment for me."

Mariana Vega - Junior Carpinterian of the Year

These are the words of Mariana Vega describing herself. Mariana has done just that. In her quiet demeanor Mariana moves mountains. While maintaining a 4.0882 GPA with four AP classes, six Honors classes, and numerous extra-curricular activities, Mariana manages to serve our community and Girls Incorporated as volunteer extraordinaire. She has actively worked as an advocate for teen pregnancy prevention, represented girls' views on the depiction of girls and women in the media to representative for the entertainment industry at national conventions, acted as a spokesperson for girls' rights, and lately as an advocate against smoking in movies rated PG13. Mariana's Girls Inc. "Water Girls" team recently won a national competition for creating a business idea based on water conservation for which they earned a week of business presentations with Goldman Sachs and rang the NASDAQ closing bell at Wall Street. And she recently became a recipient of a Girls Inc. National scholarship. Mariana plans to major in Business Administration and has applied to UC's, CSU's, Claremont McKenna, Standford, Chapman, and Harvard.
