By Becky Warren I admit that I love fantasy football. Doing the research, making strategic decisions on who to select, smack talk, watching the games, trades, ESPN NFL Countdown and ESPN NFL Primetime (the best football shows in my option) etc. It’s been a part of my annual fall tradition for nearly a decade. One thing I have noticed is that many of my female friends either do not participate or participate but pay attention very little to their teams. That’s not to say all of my friends but most. However, even if you don’t love football like I do, there are plenty of good reasons why a Girl on the Grid should consider getting into the game. #1: Bonding My league was started by my brothers and dad years ago, and it has morphed into an opportunity to stay connected with my siblings (as we are now located throughout the world). The constant discussion over the dumb trades my brothers make (of course I don’t make such ill-fated trades) is actually a great way to keep in touch. And yes, if you haven’t guessed, our family is very competitive. Every year, the winner gets the annual trophy (a silver [...]

By Lisa Page I spent the first 18 years of my life in Humboldt County, but it took me years after that to fully appreciate the small town vibe, slower pace and breathtaking scenery. Now, I’m the first to recommend it is a weekend getaway to my Sacramento and Bay Area friends – many of whom have not even driven through that part of the state on Highway 101 before (that’s once they get over their shock when they find out that it’s about 400 miles from San Francisco to the Oregon border). The area seems to be more widely recognized for its marijuana plants, especially with a proposition on the ballot this November to legalize it, than for its ancient old growth redwoods. But it was the big trees (not the plants) that made Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Jurassic Park 2 film scenes here. And The Majestic, starring Jim Carrey, and Outbreak were filmed in one of my favorite towns, Ferndale, which is a time warp back to the 1950s, because of its well-preserved Victorian architecture. Distance to Sacramento: 290 miles to the largest city in the county, Eureka, which is in between Ferndale and Arcata [...]

By Ashley Robinson Dear Hawaiian Shirt, I am writing to you today because I am asking you to cease and desist. Last Friday, after I had spent over an hour getting ready for a date with my husband, we arrived at a very nice restaurant in Sacramento, and you were there. Not only did your presence annoy me, for you were underdressed and overused, but I decided your overestimated popularity needed a reality check. Hawaiian Shirt, you are like the annoying girl I had to sit next to all four years of high school because of alphabetical seating. You are like the driver in front of me who doesn’t use turn indicators when turning right off busy roads. You are like spilling coffee on yourself at the beginning of a work day. Totally avoidable, but all too prominent. Very annoying. Hawaiian Shirt, I do not mind you in theory. You have every right to be welcomed at backyard barbeques, beach days, bartenders, Beach Boys concerts (hell, even Journey concerts) and most especially, LUAUS. You are the symbol of Baby Boomer casual elegance, but your days are numbered. We are a new generation looking to the retrosexuals influenced by Mad Men [...]

By Genny Heika As I write this, my daughter is playing Monopoly with a friend, and my son is in his room driving a remote control car around. I just finished doing some writing for C2BU and was wrapping up a few things on my computer when I looked at my calendar and saw that I have a school check-in day with my daughter at her middle school this week. Middle school. I know I’ve mentioned the fact that I can hardly believe she’s in sixth grade, but it seems like as the date gets closer, I can’t even think about it without getting choked up. I’m not emotional about it because I’m sad. I’m not sad. I’m just… emotional. It’s the same way I felt when I walked her into preschool, her tiny hand holding tightly onto mine, her thumb in her mouth because she was a little unsure. I felt like this her first day of kindergarten too, as I hurried away after dropping her off, hiding my tears under my sunglasses, hoping nobody would notice that I was crying. It’s not that I want her to stay young, and it’s not that I don’t want her to [...]

Dear Patrick and Jamie, I’ve found a guy that I’m totally into – smart, ambitious and funny. Problem is, he works in my office. Is it ever cool to date someone from work? Thanks, Anna C. from Curtis Park PATRICK’S TAKE: In my experience, office hookups are unavoidable – like the expired yogurt in your fridge that you know will end badly – sometimes you’re just hungry not matter how bad the outcome. We spend the bulk of our time in the workplace – making it tough to meet people anywhere else. Hooking up with a co-worker is exciting because there is risk involved. The mere idea of “getting caught” is part of the attraction: “Did somebody see us making out in front of the water cooler?” “Did you see how Judy in accounting looked at us?” Just kidding. Nobody has accounting departments. Honestly though, workplace hookups are almost unavoidable. Usually, the majority of your co-workers are people you’d never be romantically interested in outside of work, but by nature of seeing the same people every day you’re bound to get hot for someone. I hated California Girls the first time I heard it, but let that song play 500 [...]

By Robin Swanson As someone who deals with “the press” every day of my life, you might think that kicking back at a restaurant by the same name might not be my first choice, but you’d be wrong when it comes to “The Press” on 18th and Capitol, opened by David English, former Executive Chef of Ella. This restaurant’s namesake actually refers to an olive press, with olive oil as a featured ingredient in many of their delectable dishes. Like many other frenetic girls on the grid, it’s not every day that I want to sit down for a full-on meal at a restaurant – and given that my self-imposed wedding-dress-diet doesn’t have much wiggle-room for a calorie-busting feast, I found the tapas and appetizers featured here to be a nice option. I’ll save the comprehensive restaurant review of The Press for someone with more time and caloric-flexibility, but here’s my run-down for girls-on-the-go who are looking for a cool, casual place to kick up your strappy-sandals without busting the budget. The tapas, at 3 for $10, is a steal for those of us who like to nibble our way through happy hour. The current tapas options are: potato croquettes, [...]

By the Editors Ever heard of the “Fifty People, One Question” project? It’s a brilliant social and film experiment that poses the same “simple” question to fifty people. They take the answers and produce a short film that illustrates the beauty of human connection. Some of the answers are gut-wrenching, while others are downright hilarious and clever. Check out the one they filmed in Brooklyn, which asks “Where’s the one place you’d want to wake up tomorrow?” Fifty People, One Question: Brooklyn from Fifty People, One Question on Vimeo.

By Jamie Romas Like many Californians, summer is my favorite season. Summer brings with it all that is good in the world, like baseball, barbecues, beer festivals and beach vacations. The days are longer, produce tastes better, people’s moods are improved…just about everything is better in the summertime. With one notable exception: summer hair. Oh, summer hair. Unless you’ve never had a bad hair day in your life (in which case you shouldn’t be reading this article, because you’re actually a Barbie doll), you know what I’m talking about. Daily exposure to hot weather, UV rays, chlorine, and salt water can turn even the most well-behaved mane into a frizzy, unmanageable mess. Call me lazy, but I just don’t have the patience – or the time – to tame my unruly Greek-American hair in the summer. Blow drying takes forever, and besides, who wants to direct a scorching hot stream of air at one’s head when it’s 100 degrees outside? Not to mention the fact that all that styling is for naught the moment you work up a sweat, jump into a pool, or take a dip in the ocean. My options were bleak: sweat it out under a blow [...]
