The event is a celebration of craft brewing in Indiana: past, present, and future. This year, we expect well over 500 people to converge on the Conner Prairie grounds. The program will feature over ten Indiana brewers, plus live brewing demonstrations, a panel discussion about beer in Indiana, music from North Carolina-based folk/country/bluegrass outfit Mandolin Orange, and more.

It’s hard to imagine asking the question “why another summer beer event” to beer enthusiasts, but this festival isn’t just about craft brewing. History on Tap is organized by the Conner Prairie Horizon Council, a group of young professionals associated with the park. Part of our mission is to bring people from our demographic to experience Conner Prairie as an adult. This experience is completely different than the one you likely had in the fourth grade.

At History on Tap, part of the Conner Prairie grounds are open to attendees. The main attraction is Prairietown, a small village set in 1836. Conner Prairie staff—called interpreters—dress in period costume and interact with visitors as if Andrew Jackson is still President. But since History on Tap is a 21+ event, you may want to ask them questions that you might not normally offer if the kids were around.OK

If you are interested in history, science, learning, or just meeting other young professionals, the Horizon Council could be a great group for you. And at History on Tap, you’ll have the chance to not only meet the Horizon Council members, but even volunteer in exchange for a free VIP ticket. If you’re interested, contact Corrina Cohen (cm.cohen@att.net) to learn more.

Doors for History on Tap open at 6:30PM on Friday, May 31. Register today athttp://www.connerprairie.org/historyontap. But hurry, because the event is already close to selling out and we’d love to see you there!

So, what happens when you gather 50+ people on a warm day in a brewpub? Good things happen, that’s what! I can’t say enough good things about the folks at Black Acre, and of course our new friends at Girls Rock! Indianapolis. Kristen(GRI) and Holly(Black Acre)were both so easy to work with, we had such a blast raising money for Girls Rock! Indianapolis and of course,

The idea was to not only raise awareness for Girls Rock but to also raise money for their summer camp and scholarships for the girls. Girls Rock! Indianapolis is a non-profit organization dedicated to building positive self-esteem in girls and encouraging creative expression through music. They’re providing music education programs to allow girls the opportunity to participate in an environment that fosters leadership, encourages social change, and cultivates a supportive community of female peers and mentors. Neat, huh?

We raised money, we raised pints, we had a blast catching up with old friends and making new ones so we’re really excited for the chance to do this again. Thanks to everyone who came to say hi, donated money and supported us!

Tap ‘N’ Run is back for another year. A silly 4k with 3 beer chug stations throughout the race and of course, a full beer when you finish. If you didn’t get a chance to attend, volunteer or run/drink last year, you’ll have to check out the gallery of images from Jonathan Roberts but nonetheless, this is one of the funnest events to kick off your summer. Check out the information below and get your mouse clickin’ all over this registration!

What is Tap ‘N’ Run?

Tap ‘N’ Run combines a ridiculous running race – a 4k with 3 beer chug stations* along the race course, a full beer at the Finish Line, crazy costumes, great times with friends, and unbelievable athleticism. JAM Active has teamed up with some rad bars in Indianapolis to create this awesome day of racing and community enjoyment! (*chug stations = 5-6 oz. of beer per)In addition to being a part of an awesome and unique racing experience, all participants will receive a sweet Finisher’s medal (that doubles as a bottle opener…no, really), the equivalent of over two beers and a Tap ‘N’ Run t-shirt to commemorate your amazing accomplishment. You also have the option to have your race professionally timed so you and your friends can laugh about how long it took to finish a mere 4k while sipping some suds!

There are only a couple more days to get in on the fun for a cool $45 – after May 25th, it jumps to $50 and if you’re a super procrastinator like me, you’re going to pay $55 the day of the race so get it now!

Please help our friends at Sun King collect items for a fallen soldier’s family. They will be able to accept donations over the Memorial Day weekend. Find out more information on what they’re collecting/accepting below:

I am former Army Infantry Sergeant Rob Malad, and current Sun King employee. My former unit, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, is currently on a nine month tour in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. It has been a long and difficult deployment, and the life of a dear Brother was taken December 10th, 2012.

Staff Sergeant Wesley Williams, of New Carlisle, OH, was one of the finest leaders of men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, and an even better human being. He is survived by his wife, Krista, and their now 20 month old daughter, Faith. Krista is also currently pregnant with a second daughter, due July 21st.

Because of my dedication to my unit and my loyalty to my Brother, I am heading a collection of donations for the arrival of their second daughter. Accepted donations any, and all baby materials (non-parshable), to include, but not limited to: diapers, baby wipes, baby powder, gift cards (Walmart, Baby’s R Us, etc.), as well as cash donations. The cash donations will go directly to the Wesley Williams Scholarship Fund for the Junior ROTC Program in New Carlisle, OH. All donations will be collected at Sun King, Thursday, May 23 – Saturday, May 25.

A small gesture of compassion and kindness can go a long way, and together we can help ease the suffering of a family who lost their hero too soon.

Collection jars will be placed in the Tasting Room at Sun King Brewery and a donation box for baby items will be placed in the Front Office. Please stop by during open business hours, Thursday, May 23rd (10am-7pm), Friday, May 24th (10am-7pm), and Saturday, May 25th (1pm-5pm).

God bless,

SGT Rob Malad

Lately I’ve been out and about with friends and someone always asks, “How did you meet X?” and the inevitable answer is “the internet!” especially in the beer community.

A couple of months before I even step foot in Urban Grape, I connected with Hadley, one of the owners on Twitter. Partially for my work with High & Mighty, mostly for our obsession with the Real Housewives. We hit it off and I over the moon excited for their announcement of a store opening in the South End. Granted, I don’t live far from Chestnut Hill but a girl can never have too many options. I attended their anniversary party last summer, saw plans for the new store, and I met Ben Bouton, their beer manager. (Gentlemen take note, Ben proposed to his fiance at the Samuel Adams Brewery!) Ben’s excitement for beer is contagious, which makes the launch of Urban Hops that much more exciting. We connected with him on the 5 beers he’s most excited to have in the shop and at the tasting this Sunday, 2pm – 5pm at BOTH locations.

Brasserie St. Feuillien Saison- It’s true, the famous St. Feuillien is now in cans!! Absolutely perfect for your trip to the beach or the lake this summer. Established in 1873, St. Feuillien has become one of Belgium’s most well known and respected breweries. This slightly tangy, earthy saison is considered a ‘terroir driven beer’, its spicy notes evoking the beautiful farmland of Belgium from which it was inspired. Crisp and refreshing, St. Feuillien’s Saison (in cans!) is sure to be a summer favorite for all!

Brauerei Plank Pilserl- Currently under the direction of the 16th generation Michael Plank (brewery was established in 1617!), this German pilsner is an absolute benchmark of the style. This beer captures the essence of German noble hops with a balanced spiciness to go along with the traditional pilsner malt. This beer doesn’t need to be showy, it is absolute perfection in a bottle!

Stillwater Artisanal ‘Cellar Door’- Coming from Baltimore, MD, this elegant American Farmhouse Ale is perfect for sipping outside on the porch. The hops lend herbal and citrus notes to the nose and palate. The ale is finished with white sage, which brings an earthy spice to the beer. Featuring Stillwater Artisanal’s house saison yeast, this beer is dry and refreshing on the hottest of days.

Prairie Artisan Ales ‘Prairie Ale’ Saison- Out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, relative newcomer to the craft beer scene, Prairie Artisan Ales, got their break through Kickstart! This saison features a blend of both ale and wine yeasts, with some brettanomyces added in for its drying qualities. Both spicy and fruity, this beautifully crafted (and labeled) farmhouse style ale will keep you hydrated and happy!

Binding-Brauerei Schofferhofer- Total guilty pleasure beer! Weighing in at a modest 2.5% ABV, Schofferhofer is a blend of German hefeweizen and grapefruit juice! An homage to traditional German ‘Radler’ (a mix of hefeweizen and lemonade), this beer lends the bitterness of the grapefruit, and refreshing quality of a hefeweizen. I know I’ll be throwing these back all summer!

Wait, grapefruit juice? I kind of love this idea. Since the weather has warmed up I’ve been dreaming of summer brews, a shandy or two, and saisons by the 6 pack on patios. Okay fine, maybe I’ve been drinking some on my roof. But summer might be the best season for beer (and yes, I will say that again about fall beers. Every season is the best, really).

I honestly could talk forever about how great Ben, Hadley, TJ and the entire staff are, how much I love Urban Grape, how you need to stop by one of their stores just because of how gorgeous they are. Thankfully, you can see it all for yourself on Sunday. Stop by the South End store (where I’ll be!) or Chestnut Hill for the Summer Beer Fest, 2pm – 5pm.

Some more info from their press release on Urban Hops:

The Urban Grape, a modern boutique wine store in Boston’s South End and Chestnut Hill, will launch Urban Hops, an expanded, dedicated and curated craft beer program in both locations this spring. Because of the increased interest from customers in the craft beer movement, the Urban Grape is meeting demands with an amplified commitment to the beer program. With over 50 new brands in-house tallying to 300 varieties, Urban Hops will offer both large format and smaller format local and regional nano and micro-brew beer choices. Beer Manager, Ben Bouton, will spearhead the program, and aims to follow the Urban Grape philosophy: offer an exclusive selection of diverse and progressive bottles, while still remaining accessible, approachable and affordable.

Unlike wine at the Urban Grape, beers will be organized by region. From a beer that is aged with raspberries in
Sauterne barrels, to the latest release by well-known local craft brewers, Urban Hops hopes to strike a balance
between the more extreme and everyday beer offerings. Education is always at the forefront within the store, and
Urban Hops will be no different by hosting monthly tastings with brewers and events.
“People have realized that beer is not what it was twenty years ago, and their idea of what makes a great beer is
expanding,” explains Beer Manager Ben Bouton. “And like a lot of great wine that we feature at the Urban Grape,
much of this beer is not prohibitively expensive. One of the most sought after craft beers in the world is only $6 a
bottle.” Ben has completed the first level of the Cicerone Certification Program, which provides credentials to
people who work with beer, providing proven expertise in the selection, acquisition, and serving.

Give me something that is both salty, sweet, hot and cold, and you have given me the perfect food. Yes, I will admit that am one of those people that dips French fries in Frosty’s. I am also someone that generally asks for the hoppiest beer on tap. This hasn’t always been the case. My taste in alcohol started off very sweet (think Mike’s Hard Raspberry Lemonade), transitioned to yellow fizz (oh the days of college and Keystone Light), and eventually became addicted to a variety of craft beer.

Tastebud Basics

The average adult has between 2,000 and 10,000 taste buds that perceive sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and potentially a fifth savory taste called umami. Salty and sour detection is needed to control salt and acid balance. Bitter detection warns of foods containing poisons. Sweet provides a guide to calorie-rich foods. Taste buds in combination with smell discern flavor.

In 7 Things You Didn’t Know About Your Taste Buds, Dr. Bartoshuk states the normal life cycle for a taste bud is 10 to 14 days. You can kill taste buds, but they grow back immediately. This is why the ability to taste does not diminish with age. Taste preferences also fluctuate with hormones. For example, the ability to taste bitterness does decline in women when menopause begins. This may be because “the taste of bitter is hardwired to be a cue for poison, early in pregnancy your brain becomes sensitized to avoid it in order to guard your baby,” says Dr. Bartoshuk.

A Womanly Disposition

Ladies may have a step-up in choosing good beer. According to an interview conducted with Lettie Teague, The Wall Street Journal wine columnist, women are better at perceiving smells, more sensitive to bitter flavors, prefer sweet, and may notice more subtleties. This is confirmed by findings from a study conducted jointly by Danish Science Communication and food scientists from The Faculty of Life Sciences (LIFE) at University of Copenhagen on almost 9,000 children.

The Danish study showed that girls are generally better at recognizing concentrations of both sweet and sour tastes. According to Michael Bom Frøst, Associate Professor at the Department of Food Science at LIFE, the experiment showed that boys and girls have largely the same number of taste buds and it appeared that what makes the difference is the way in which boys and girls process taste impressions. The study indicated that boys need an average of approximately 10 per cent more sourness and approximately 20 per cent more sweetness to recognize the taste. The study additionally indicated that the ability to recognize tastes increases gradually with age, and the greatest shift is seen at 13-14 years when children become markedly more sensitive to sour tastes and love of very sweet flavors decreases.

A Matter of Training

I prefer bold flavors, so you will probably won’t overhear me say, “you can really taste the oak undertones and a slight taste of cherry in the background.” But, you can train your palate to like new food by bringing out its sweetness, or by adding something fatty.

People also are influenced by social cues, such as eating a certain food with someone else who really enjoys it, or with someone whom you admire and like. If your friends have good taste, then you also are encouraged to have good taste.

While women naturally may naturally be more sensitive to certain flavors, cultivating taste requires exposure. Nutrition experts advise parents to try expose their children to new flavors, and research shows that it can take as many as 10 to 15 tastes before a child will learn to appreciate a new flavor. These same theories can be applied to training your palate to drink certain beers.

So the more beer you taste, with a group of people you like, the better your palate is trained? Sounds like we have our work cut out for us, ladies.

Important lesson: when you fail at blogging, find guest posters. One of our GPO gals Nicole came to the BCAE Brew and Chew with me last week and somehow I got her to write about it. Maybe it was because she won a free ticket? Thanks to BCAE for having us, High & Mighty for the beers, and Sam and Chris for the INCREDIBLE food. Boston friends, get over to jm Curley and Bogie’s Place immediately, eat all the food (drinks! beer!) and enjoy the food coma. We’ll have some exciting news about an upcoming event with them soon. We’ll keep you updated!

Last Monday I had the honor of attending a class at the Boston Center of Adult Education entitled, “Brew and Chew”. The evening would be a night of recipes created by jm Curley’s chef Sam Monsour and paired with beers from High & Mighty. I knew when I walked into the Center and immediately smelled meat smoking that it was going to be a very good time. The menu was as follows:

· Veal Schnitzel w/Brat Spice – H&M Purity of Essence.

· Cocoa Nib-Jerk Rubbed Pork Tenderloin w/Pineapple-Mint Salsa – H&M Divine Brown

Harissa Rubbed Lamb Riblets – H&M Fumata Bianca

· Five Spice-Duck Breast Buns w/Kimchi – H&M XPA

· Cumin & Coriander Crusted Sea Scallops w/Gremolata – H&M Beer of the Gods

While I don’t cook a great deal of meat at home, I have to say, this class definitely inspired me to try to change that. The duck breast buns alone were enough to have me running out to buy a steamer and to finally make kimchi ASAP. I have a special place in my heart for all things buns so those were definitely my favorite. However, there was not a single dish that disappointed. From the perfectly seared scallops to the contrasting spicy and coolness of the pork and salsa, it was one stand-out dish after another. But what really completed each dish was the perfect pairing of the High & Mighty beers. I’ve been to plenty of wine pairing dinners, but it was such a treat to have some of my favorite beers paired with these awesome dishes. And while I am not always a fan of smoky beers, I have to say that the lamb and Fumata Bianca was the best pairing of the night. There was something about the smoke in the beer that just brought out the flavor of the lamb perfectly. But despite all of these amazing dishes and delicious beers, I think one of my favorite lessons of the night was how easily I can not only make mustard, but make it with beer! I’ll be trying out that recipe, immediately for my very own brew and chew at home!

One more fun fact – we’ve got a team going for the upcoming Cambridge 5K and some weekly runs. Head on over to our Facebook page for info or send an email to us.

Pre-sale only tickets [click here] are a mere $25, from which profits will benefit Austin-based breast cancer charity, The Smile Never Fades. Kendall Antonelli and a few from the Saint Arnold team will be on hand to walk tasters through the whys of each pairing. See you there! E-mail Jennifer@girlspintout.com with questions.

Cheers!
