Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 6.5-inch springform pan and dust with rice flour.
In a large bowl combine the brown rice flour, cornstarch, millet flour, rice bran, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, xanthan gum and salt and stir to combine. In a medium bowl, mix about half of the beer with the oil and eggs and then add to the dry ingredients and stir to incorporate. Add the remaining beer and stir well to mix. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for approximately 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted in several areas all come out clean.

1 Tbsp sugar
2 tsp baking powder
¾ cup minced fresh chives
1 1/2 cusp coarsely shredded cheddar cheese
¾ cup (or more) chilled beer, such as an ale, lager or pilsner
2 eggs
1 tsp salt
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
2 tsp Dijon mustard
Sesame seeds

Preheat oven to 425°F. Sprinkle a baking sheet with flour (I just used parchment paper). Whisk first 3 ingredients in large bowl. Stir in chives and cheese. Whisk ¾ cup beer, 1 egg, oil, and mustard in small bowl. Gradually add beer mixture to dry ingredients, tossing until moist clumps form and adding more beer by tablespoonfuls if dough is dry (I ended up using a little more than a cup of beer). Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface; knead just until dough comes together.
Pat out dough to 1-inch-thick round. Using 2 ½-inch-diameter cutter, cut out scones. Gather dough scraps and repeat. Transfer to prepared sheet. Whisk remaining egg in small cup; brush over scones. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Bake scones until golden on top and tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 14 minutes. Cool scones on sheet 5 minutes. Transfer to basket. Serve warm and enjoy!

1/2 cup all purpose flour
3 lbs stewing beef, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
3 tablespoons oil
1 onion, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
1 tablespoon tomato paste
5 oz. button mushrooms, sliced
1 x 11-oz bottle Belgian or other beer
1 cup beef stock
1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon light brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Season 1/2 of the flour (1/4 cup) with salt and pepper. Toss the beef in the seasoned flour to coat. Heat the oil in a large flame-proof casserole over medium-high heat. Shake the excess flour from the beef, then cook, in batches, turning, until browner on all sides. Remove from the pan. Reduce the heat to medium. Cook the onion and the celery, stirring, 3-4 minutes until softened. Stir in the remaining flour (1/4 cup) and cook until it’s lightly browned. Add the tomato paste, cook for another minute. Return the beef to the pan with the mushrooms, beer, beef stock, bay leaf, sugar and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper and bring to a simmer. Cover the pan and bake in the preheated oven for 1.5 hours or until the beef is tender. Remove from the oven. Season with salt and pepper. Layer the garlic bread on top of the beef and beer stew. Sprinkle with the cheese and bake for a further 20 minutes until bubbling.

1 large onion, chopped
1 12-ounce bottle beer, preferably ale
2 18-ounce bags precooked diced peeled potatoes, (see Ingredient Note)
1 14-ounce can vegetable broth, or reduced-sodium chicken broth
1 cup water2
1/2 cups nonfat or low-fat milk
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, divided
1 small red bell pepper, thinly sliced or finely chopped

Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring, until softened, about 3 minutes. Add beer; bring to a boil and boil for 5 minutes. Add potatoes, broth and water; cover and return to a boil. Reduce the heat to maintain a simmer, and cook until the potatoes are tender, about 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and mash the potatoes with a potato masher to the desired consistency. Whisk milk and flour and add to the soup. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat and cook, whisking occasionally, until thickened, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in 1 1/4 cups Cheddar and stir until melted. Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with the remaining 1/4 cup cheese and bell pepper.

Friday after Thanksgiving? Black Friday. Special tapping of Bourbon Barrel Nunmoere. Special hours, 12-6. Pints.
Black is black. Black is classic. At times, so glossy it shines like a mirror. It could probably be argued that black is dismal. Or depressing. But what if it is as black as black can be. How black? It there anything blacker? The answer is…there is Nunmoere Black!

This morning we saw a tweet mentioning Drinkify, a website that offers you a drink pairing with your music preferences. Their tagline “Don’t listen alone…” and easy interface have users type in a band/artist/song and then recommends a drink to accompany your musical selection.

Drinkify gets it right when suggesting non-alcoholic drinks for underage artists. Not that we would know (cough cough), but Miley Cyrus is paired appropriately with a Red Bull energy drink. However, Drinkify could use some help in their craft beer pairings. We typed in The Dead Weathers, one of our favorite Jack White bands, and Drinkify suggested Rolling Rock garnished with fresh berries. Perhaps Drinkify was going for the ironic pairing? Does anyone even drink Rolling Rock anymore? We’re not sure.

We’ve heard reports of Sierra Nevada popping up occasionally when paired with Flogging Molly, however when we tried that artist, we got “a bottle of Pinot Noir room temperature.” There are also a few PBR suggestions that some of our Twitter followers discovered but we haven’t seen the suggestion yet.

Drinkify, you’d be more fun if you added craft beers to your database. Even making it regional based on bands. U2 could be paired with a Porterhouse Oyster Stout, Bon Jovi with a Flying Fish Hopfish IPA, and The Killers could be paired with recycled dishwasher water. Funny enough, Drinkify paired The Killers with 2 oz. of cocaine and Muse with a box of wine so clearly they understand not to take things so seriously.

Drinkify is fun for a few minutes, but unless they up the craft beer content, it’s not a bookmark worthy site for craft beer drinkers. What do you think? Have you found any unique or fun pairings through Drinkify?

Face it, trying a new craft beer can be an enlightening experience or downright disgusting. Finding out the hard way Simcoe hops aren’t for you is no fun when you spent $12.00 on a six pack. Breweries are hip and smart to offer tasting rooms that give us a place to try out their line up and debut one off specialities, collaborations, movie nights, fundraisers, food trucks and more. Tasting rooms have become a community space of like minded drinkers.

First time tasting room visitors, this is for you! We’ve got a few tips to help make your experience rock.
Use the buddy system! If you’ve got a friend who is a craft beer connoisseur, ask them to go with you. (They’ll probably say yes.) They can tell you all kinds of things that will enhance your experience.
Go early. Fridays at 4:45pm are hopping (pun intended!) and first time tasting room visitors could feel like it’s a craft beer herd of cattle. It’s busy, lines move fast and it isn’t the time to stand around talking to the employee pouring samples about the home brew system your dad’s cousin built in his barn! We suggest if you really want to learn about the beer, give the brewery a call to see when their tasting hours are slow so you can chat and learn. It might be a Wednesday or Thursday but totally worth it to enjoy the

Wear real shoes. This may sound silly, however flip flops on polished concrete floors aren’t safe stone cold sober, let alone after trying a brewery’s line up of tasty brews.

Get a growler to go if it’s available. You’ve had a chance to try some new things, what better way to keep the experience going? Drinking fresh beer at home is cheaper, safer, and just as enjoyable as going out. Growler refills are cheaper, so you can take it back to fill up on more delicious beer later! Logo pint glasses are fun too.

Be social. Tasting rooms are a great way to meet new people. Check in on FourSquare, Twitter, Facebook, Untappd – whatever you use and let your friends know you’re there!

Tasting rooms might seem daunting at first, but they can be a source of fun and discovery. You’ll be able to try things in small doses and decide what you really like before splurging for an entire six pack, bomber or pint at the pub.

P.S. Ladies – you’ll get a lot of attention with an empty growler at your desk waiting for a refill after work!

30. I turned 30 years old today and reflected on how amazing my life is. Craft beers all around! Cheers! Sure, I have 2 baskets of laundry to put away and there’s a sink full of dishes, but life is good. It won’t ever be perfect, but perfection isn’t for me. I like the chaos.

I’m starting off my 30′s with a month off from the social media sites Twitter and Facebook. I have felt that I’ve neglected the blogging and event planning that Girls Pint Out was based on. It’s been too easy to jump on Twitter and blast out a thought in 140 characters instead of fleshing out well crafted posts that are thoughtful and useful. I want that back. Especially with the opportunity I’ve been provided to encourage other Girls Pint Out Chapter Presidents. We’re going to be changing things up soon….and I think you’ll enjoy it as much as we’re looking forward to sharing it with you. Every girl needs a makeover from time to time.

Girls Pint Out social media will continue to run, but the content won’t be from me personally. I’m lucky to have Magen and Sara take care of things for me while I concentrate on other aspects of running GPO, starting a new job, and spending time with my family. If you need to contact me directly, please feel free to shoot me an email tamre@girlspintout.com. I promise I’ll follow up the best I can or if you just want to chat about beer in general, I’d like that too.

Remember when we all used to go out with friends and we spent the evening talking to *gasp* each other? Now we’re all addicted to our phones. We check in, rate our beers, and tell the world what we’re doing. So for my birthday, I’m blacking out. I am going to spend time with friends and leave my phone at home. I encourage you all to take a night and do the same. Reconnect with people over social media. Black out with me.

Cheers,
Tamre

There’s more than corn in Indiana….

If you’re a Hoosier, you’re familiar with this phrase. It’s from a theme park commercial that entices vacation goers to Lake Schafer, Indiana. But what if you’re a beer blogger and you saw Indianapolis, Indiana as a location nominee for the 2012 Beer Bloggers Conference? Chances are you thought, “what the??” like Fermentedly Challenged. Indianapolis is so much more than the Indianapolis 500. I worked with The Indianapolis Visitors and Convention Association on our bid for the Beer Bloggers Conference. We’ll definitely offer more than corn….

The Beer
Indianapolis is home to over a dozen breweries. Not mediocre breweries. Award winning breweries. Indiana had the highest award winning percentage by state at GABF. Leading the pack was Sun King Brewing Company. Sun King Brewing Co. is located in downtown Indianapolis and wrote a letter of recommendation for our city to host the Beer Bloggers Conference. Down the street is Flat 12 Bierwerks. Not even open a year yet, and they have been receiving praises not only for their community involvement, but one of the best porters most people have tasted. Look for them smashing competitions in the future. They call their fans HopStars. Broad Ripple is home to our brew pub scene. Brugge Brasserie (also a GABF winner), Thr3e Wisemen Brewing Company (a ski lodge feel with iPads on the tables), and the original Broad Ripple Brewpub are all within walking distance of each other and a short cab ride from downtown. Bier Brewery is our golden child nano brewery. Each batch is hand crafted and although they say they are open from Wednesday til Sunday, good freaking luck getting beer on Sunday. They typically run out. Triton Brewing Company is so new, I haven’t been yet! Breweries are opening as fast as permits are issued. Fountain Square (so new it doesn’t have a website so I linked to a news article) and Black Acre ( I dare you to click you are not 21.) are up next and I can’t keep up with it.

Hotels and Airfare
How many of us stayed at the Best Western in Boulder? I didn’t attend Portland solely due to hotel and airfare. We have the top of the line hotels in Indy vying for this conference. The J.W. Mariott (oh the largest JW in the world) and Conrad (top Hilton hotel) have both bid blogger friendly prices and made the conference possible. Airfare to Indy is reasonable or if you can take an extra day, we’re within 24 hr driving distance of half the country. Our airport is also very close to downtown with shuttles, transportation and if all else fails, I can give you a ride…which leads me to my next point….

Indianapolis
We’re a convention town. We’re the second largest convention town behind Las Vegas. We host more conferences than New York City, Boston, and Orlando. Our downtown reflects that with high quality bars and restaurants within walking distance of all the hotels. If you feel like getting to good beer a little faster, we have a pedicab service that will take you around downtown for $5. Indianapolis is hosting our first Super Bowl in February and while residents including myself curse at the construction, you’ll be reaping the rewards. Our entire downtown is getting a face lift and walking access will be easier than ever. Here’s a map of the downtown area including hotels, bars and breweries. It’s all so convenient. Our visitors association and brewers guild, amazing hotels, and all the best bars and restaurants want the beer bloggers conference. We embrace conferences like out of town family members. You’ll be welcomed and doted upon.

We’re not Chicago or Boulder or Portland, Asheville, Austin or St. Louis. We don’t want to be. We’re Indianapolis.

Update! Zephyr Adventures announced yesterday that Indianapolis will be the host city for Beer Bloggers Conference 2012! There is also an option to visit Chicago as well for a pre-conference night with Goose Island. We would like to encourage as many bloggers as possible to make the trip for both Chicago and Indianapolis. Let us know if you have any Indy specific questions and we’ll see you in July!

“I don’t like beer.” It’s been a while since I’ve heard that phrase uttered, but as I’ve been expanding my social and networking circles it’s becoming a bit more common. The Girls behind Girls Pint Out have created a small sampling of fall beers that are further from domestic light beers than Memorial Day and Halloween. These are great beers to try that match the season and also bring some non-traditional flavors to beer. They’ll change your perception of beer being typically yellow, fizzy and light.

Schlafly Pumpkin Ale – We wait for this beer every year. It’s a pumpkin spiced ale that is pumpkin pie in a bottle. We use it to make pumpkin beer cupcakes, sip while reading a good book, and taunt our friends during afternoon tailgates. Spicy, pumpkin, and regional. (Schlafly’s from St. Louis)

Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar – a favorite of our PR Princess Carla. This brown ale is full of hazelnut aroma. Super dark brown and nutty tasting, this beer belongs in your glass while cozy in a dark booth at a pub with a warm butternut squash salad.

Breckenridge Vanilla Porter – this porter emanates warm vanilla when you breathe it in. If you love Warm Vanilla Sugar lotion or vanilla lattes, give this one a try. Don’t be fooled by it’s dark color, it won’t be thick like a stout.

Southern Tier Crème Brulee Stout – Southern Tier’s BlackWaters Imperial Stout Series of high gravity (high in alcohol content) beers is amazing. Crème Brulee Stout smells exactly like crème brulee. Burnt sugar and caramel fill the glass and it’s so smooth with vanilla and creamy tasting. It’s like drinking a frappachino, but beer!

We chose these beers because they are widely available right now and to us , embody fall. These are great beers to try if you think you don’t like beer. The flavors will be completely different than what you’re used to.

We suggest letting them warm up in the glass a little bit – the warmth will help open up the flavors. If you drink it ice cold, it’ll shock your tastebuds and you’ll miss the best part – the warmth of vanilla and spice.

What a fun fall baking/drinking project!

Ingredients

1 sugar pumpkin (the little ones. You can find them by the squash and root veggies. Don’t use a carving pumpkin!)
2-6 bottles pumpkin ale (We used Tyranena Painted Ladies.)
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 egg
1 stick butter, melted
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
½ cup white sugar
2 tablespoon maple syrup
1 teaspoon cardamom
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt

Preparation

1. Preheat the oven to 325 then start in on the pumpkin. Cut in half. Remove seeds. Now, place the pumpkin on a greased casserole dish skin side up and slide into the oven.

2. Whew! That was hard. Have a beer.

3. Let pumpkin roast for 15 to 20 minutes before removing and adding a half a bottle of beer for moisture. Return to oven for another 5 minutes; remove and rest to cool. Crank your oven up to 350.

4. In a large bowl sift together the flour, baking powder and spices. Wisk the melted butter, egg, sugar and maple syrup in a separate bowl or in your standing mixer like we did.

4. Peel the pumpkin, retaining only the flesh; place in a blender. Add half the beer. Pulse in the blender while slowly adding enough beer to create a thick milkshake like consistency.

5. Pour 1 cup of the pumpkin mixture into the wet ingredients bowl and whisk well (reserve the rest for a second batch! Or ice cream! Or something) . Finally dump the dry ingredients into the wet mixture in thirds and whisk just until it’s a thick batter.

6. Grease your muffin tin or use super cute cupcake papers like we did and distribute the batter so that each holder is filled nearly to the top. Bake for 18 minutes and take a look. If a toothpick comes out wet, pop them back in for a few more minutes. It may take up to 10 more minutes based on your oven. Our first batch was undercooked.

7. Have another beer and clean up while your cupcakes bake. Don’t you love sitting down to a warm cupcake and the kitchen is already clean? Us too.

Notes: This was a 4 beer project. As in, we used about a bottle of beer and drank three. These cupcakes will be very moist and similar to a pumpkin bread. Don’t expect a super light, fluffy crumb. It will be on the dense side. The crowns (tops) to ours deflated quite a bit, which isn’t a problem to us since we like a high frosting to cake ratio! We also roasted the pumpkin seeds to use as a garnish. Roasted the seeds with cinnamon and sugar while the roasted pumpkins cooled. We use a basic butter cream frosting recipe we can’t tell you about because it was straight up Martha Stewart with no adaptations.

When I first heard of Chick Beer I thought of a few things. Namely that one of my favorite craft breweries was creating something fabulous with a tongue-in-cheek name. It isn’t possible to be further from the truth. In this post, I’ll say the word beer a lot in reference to craft beers – if not, I’ll specifically say domestic light beer. Craft breweries deserve the respect to be called BEER and I’ll let domestic light beers have the notoriety of being labeled.

Chick Beer is the marketing machine from Shazz. (I am not making this up. I wish I was).
“Chick is the only beer brand designed for women, who drink 25% of all beer sold in the U.S.” Labeled as a premium light lager and contract brewed in Wisconsin, Chick Beer is an attempt at the female demographic and I get that. But giving bad beer a “pretty package” (which the designer in me doesn’t find attractive in the least…don’t get me started on the font) doesn’t change the fact that it’s bad beer.
“Chick won’t weigh you down. It has just 97 calories and 3.5 carbs per bottle!” Women who really enjoy beer don’t care about the calories and carbs because they are enjoying the beer with a meal, with friends, in moderation and to enjoy how the beer enhances their experience. Wouldn’t you rather share one fantastic beer with friends than 5 domestic light beers? Those great beers typically have a higher ABV and if you’re drinking to get drunk, stick to liquor right?
“Chick’s flavor is more soft and smooth, and less bitter.” Girls Pint Out is clearly not your target market, Shazz. Although since we do share some color preferences, you might be mistaken! Women (just like men) have developed their palates to appreciate beer with full flavor. Sometimes those beers are very hoppy (bitter) and sometimes very smooth and dry. But it’s not about a flavor being soft. It’s about tasting everything in the beer and a beer being full of flavor – whether it’s chocolate or herbs, malts or hops.
“Chick is lightly carbonated, for less of that bloaty feeling.” Okay, let’s be honest. Chick Beer is competing with domestic light beers. Have you ever heard of a craft brewery market their beers with a “less filling” campaign? Also bloaty? Really? I’m just going to stop.

Craft Breweries and Macrobreweries already do a great job of creating some pretty offensive marketing material towards women. But it doesn’t have to be so. There can be fantastic branding that suits both genders and the beer is just as fantastic.I get that some people will think Girls’ Pint Out does the same thing as Chick Beer. “Softening” beer for women. Our events are unique and we’re more into educating women about craft beer so that the next time they are at a store, they purchase something great and hopefully regional to them over something like Chick Beer or a low-cal domestic light beer that is advertised to the fullest. We encourage women to look past the branding of craft beers, which can be pretty funky and really help you taste and appreciate what’s in the bottle. If Chick Beer had been an amazing Double IPA from Alaskan Brewing Company, Great Lakes Brewing Company, or even Sam Adams, I would smile and get the joke.
Shazz, the joke’s on you.
