Where to start? I suppose Christmas and New Year in Whistler?!

Most of my friends weren’t working Christmas Day so we had 16 of us in our tiny apartment for dinner everyone brought a dish of their own to share and surprisingly everyone got everything ready for about the same time!! I’ve attached a photo of us all tucking in and one of me dishing up some food!!

We didn’t do much riding between Christmas and New Year as it was sooooo busy here, but my first day up the mountain this year was one of the best this season. Headed up with a couple of other girls and had the best time!! I’ve added a photo of the views from Blackcombe with the sunshine hitting the mountains in the distance. I love living in the mountains so much! Views like that make me so happy !

I’m kind of going back in time… Going through my photos to find some of the best days here so far! So sometime just before Christmas we had a proper white out day, ended up going the wrong way a little bit and hiking back up fortunately not too far but everyone knows how hard it is to walk uphill on snow!

I think the beginning of December Whistler hosted the luge world championships so we went down and checked it out. I LOVE the photo that got taken. Bearing in mind the luge-ers average over 100kmph…

On New Years Eve I was at work until 12.30. So I had a cocktail with some of the guys I work with at midnight and headed to a mental house party when we managed to leave work!!! So it wasn’t too bad… better than last season where I didn’t finish work til 9am new years day!! Probably a good thing, as we had to we had to work New Years Day as well!

Every other Friday night is pay day Friday at one of the bars.. so that’s some of the girls and myself a bit merry!

That’s me waxing my own board for the very first time!! I thought I better finally learn to do it myself! And it’s actually not that hard!

Then that’s me and my roomie doing important things…. like writing home to the grandparents!! They appreciate it a lot when I send them postcards. All the travelling I do means I’m not home all that much any more.

And the final photo for now is me at the peak on a beautiful bluebird day!!

Whistler is awesome! These are just a few photos I’ve picked out for now. My friend has all the ones of us actually riding so I’ll get them asap and send a couple to you!

Speak sooon,

Amy

Girlylegs - Action And Board Sports For UK Girls

Over the past three months the Longboard Girls Crew has been treating us to episodes of their Endless Roads project. The third episode finally hit this Tuesday and as expected, was a treat for the eyes and a fantastic reminder of summer fun.

In this third episode, the girls return from Mallorca and visit Carlota’s parents in their family house in Denia. They invite us to paella right in front of the beach. After eating paella the girls spend the night in Calpe and continue our journey to the country’s interior. Castillian landscapes, lands of castles and medieval towns are waiting for them.

ENDLESS ROADS is the journey of seven female riders, their lifestyle and their passion for longboard, portrayed under Juan Rayos’ lens. Ready and waiting for the forth and final episode!

Flowrider" width="300" height="160" />What to do during the the winter when you’re a wakeboarder living in England??

In the UK, only a few people brave the icy waters to wakeboard throughout the winter. No matter how much you love it, no matter how good your wettie is or how thick your gloves are, you just can’t last as long as you want to. This sucks for those of us who can’t get away for a couple of months to warmer climates..

I was thinking of ways to keep fit and have fun throughout the gloomy months, and also who would be up for trying some new sport. So the group of WakeGirlsGo.. consists of Sarah Kingdom, Steph Caller, Tor Young, Jules Haley, Sophie Cordrey and Jo Andrews, which is a cracking group as we spend most of our time hurting from laughter!

I love surfing, so I wanted to see what the girls thought of my other passion. The group of us headed to the Londoners ‘local’ Croyde where we had our own cottage for the weekend! Surfing Croyde Bay surf school were amazing and got the girls up on their boards and turning over the two days. We tried proper Devon cream teas with homemade scones and clotted cream, we got involved with Nalu Beads who held a workshop for us, and we also got to meet photographer Rob Tibbles who was with us for the weekend to capture some classic moments.

We all wakeboard a lot so we are used to a beating or two, but the morning after the first surf they were aching a fair amount! Surfing works different muscles in your body, and the only way to keep and build these particular muscles is to actually surf. Forget the aches though, I asked the girls if they enjoyed surfing and they loved it so much they want to keep going and do it when they can’t wakeboard. Win!

The next sport we tried was one of Stephs. Flow Riding. Stephs has done this before as she rides for Animal who is also in association with the Flow House in Bedford. She hooked us up with a weekend of flowriding! We turned up on Saturday evening for our lesson and got straight to it. It is hard! We were stacking all over the place, mostly due to laughing too much. Its such a weird feeling, its not exactly the same as any other board sport, but more like surfing than it is wakeboarding or snowboarding I thought. By day two we were all getting on better, standing for longer, dropping in from the top, doing 360 spins and little ollies, but still crashing a fair amount. Steph was rocking it putting in some bigger turns by this time as well. When Monday morning came around, my body hurt like hell, when you’re learning how to flowride, its definitely a work out!

We’ve got lots in the pipeline for WakeGirlsGo… events to test out some different sports until our lakes warm up a fair amount. I’ll be sure to keep you posted on our new sporting experiences :)

The Snow Gods were smiling down on us… after almost 2 weeks of epic snow fall 16 excitable girlie snowboarders arrived rudechalets™ Morzine on Sunday 8th January. The following morning they woke up to perfectly clear blue skies, beautifully groomed pistes and vast expanses of velvety untracked powder glistening in the sunshine…… rudegirls 2012 was going to go off!!

Kitted out with brand new 2012 Burton Snowboards from the rudechalets™ on-site test centre the girls hurriedly made their way up the Super Morzine Gondola to the Avoriaz ski area where coaching was provided by the lovely and incredibly patient Angel (who in the late 80s won the women’s half pipe and French world cup!). As abilities ranged from complete beginners to advanced the girls were split into 4 different groups for both lessons and mountain hosting. Orla Doolin (Burton Snowboards) and Sabrina Kusar (rudechalets™) rode with the girls through the parks, pipe, Burton Stash & boarder cross – inspiring confidence and demonstrating easy jib techniques. Angel coached the beginners and intermediate groups on the cruisey tree-lined blue runs of the Linderets valley and guided the more advanced riders through the off-piste paradise of the Fornet bowl which is packed with natural half pipes, step ups, kickers & drops!

In the evening girls joined in board-sport specific Yoga & stretching classes which were run by resident rudegirls yoga teacher and masseuse Naomi Smith. Après ski activities included sampling the loony beer Mutzig in Bar Robinson – Morzine’s après ski institution; pogoing to Drum n Bass beats at Basscamp in the Tremplin Bar and taking part in a 4km kamikaze torch lit night sledding adventure through the wooded pistes on the Pleney home run! It was a fantastic week during which every single girl progressed massively on their snowboard and made some great new friends.

Due to popular demand rudechalets™ are running a rudegirls LITE week from the 25th March – 1st April 2012 and will run their rudegirls 2013 week from the 6th – 13th January 2013. For more information / reservations please contact: www.rudechalets.com / info@rudechalets.com / 08700687030

Girlylegs - Action And Board Sports For UK Girls

Tuesday saw the Protest World Rookie Fest slopestyle competition go off in Livigno, Italy. The 3 star Swatch TTR World Championship event is a major competition for young shred talent to show off their skills, and the UK had Becky Menday, Nathalie Silkstone and Ayla Thidling representing.

The competition was held over two days with 128 competitors from all over the World showcasing their best tricks on a course consisting of three 13 to 18m kickers (jumps).

All three girls are part of the Junior GB Freestyle team and made it through to the finals and had to compete against 28 other finalists. The event was split into two age categories with the Groms for the under 14 and the rookies for the under 17. Each girl had three judged runs with the highest scored run counting for their final score.

Becky’s best run scored 90points and this put her into 4th place in the Groms category only one point of a podium position. Becky said ” I am so pleased with this result as I actually scored more than the 3rd place in the older rookie category”

This result is made even more remarkable when you consider that Becky only had two days to prepare for the event on the mountain; and due to lack of funding has not been able to train on the mountain since last summer.

Her fellow GBR girls where also within the top ten places, Nathalie Silkstone age 15 placed 7th in the Rookies and Ayla Thidling age 11 placed 8th in the groms. Great results for the girls in the GB team.

Becky said ” The whole event was great fun, I really enjoyed riding with my friends from all over Europe”.

The start of Feburary will see Becky competing in the second leg of the World Rookie Fest in Avoriaz in France and at the end of February Becky has been confirmed as 1 of only 10 junior girls to compete in the prestigious Burton European Open in Laax in Switzerland.

Val d’Isere has a reputation for being, well… full of the rich and occasionally famous. It’s the posh kids playground. It’s also the home of champagne powder, and amazing lines.

This is my third winter here, and fifth GAP year, and long may it continue. I’m working through my BASI snowboard Instructors courses, currently working through my level 3, and also working my ass off in resort to pay for everything.

This winter was crazy, when I arrived in town there was no snow. None. Only at the top of the glaciers, and even then it was sparse. My first days riding was on the Le Fornet glacier at the top of Val d’Isere, we were off piste, and the snow just… wasn’t. The top was quite nice, sugar snow, but even just a little bit lower down we were riding crud. This was staff training, and although the snow wasn’t great, I had an awesome day. We did all the off-the-piste stuff in the afternoon in a super cool chalet run by one of the nicer Chalet companies. I met a pretty cool guy while we were there. He just happened to be the chalet chef. A kiwi who was fresh outta riding in Canada. He seemed pretty perfect actually, someone you could just sit and chat to for hours, pretty hot, and into his riding.

When the snow did come, it didn’t stop. It was insane. The lifts were closed for a day due to the avalanche risk, and even the town was on lock down. People were stuck in Fornet for thirty two hours while the roads were closed after an avalanche over the road there. We weren’t allowed to walk to La Daille but you were allowed to drive, the road down to Bourg Saint Maurice was closed at points too.

We drove down to Bourg on the day of the big snow fall and almost got stuck down there. I have a Toyota Hilux Surf from 1989 (it’s the same age as me, and my baby, put a new engine in it last summer and love working on it) and me and three friends all packed in to go shopping down the valley. We had a trip to Lidl, hit up Maccy D’s for some food and headed back up the hill. At this point I’ll point out that I’m driving on summer tyres! We got almost to the reservoir at the turning to Tignes when the traffic just stopped. As far as you could see there was just this amazing queue of traffic. We were stood still for like an hour, and the only reason they let us up the mountain was that we were in a four wheel drive truck. It was a wonderfully terrifyingly slow drive in low range the whole way up, took forever and thank god for the coaches in front breaking up the snow and providing us with some much needed grip. We were all freezing and just a little stressed by the time we reached Val, (My car doesn’t have working heaters) but it was one hell of a trip!

The things that followed the first snow sorta started to blur, we had snow, it was out of this world! Val d’Isere finally looked like a ski resort. Time to play! Me and my flat mate opened the Grand Vallon for the first time this Winter, we were the first up the Signal drag lift and down the other side and it was out of this world!!! Some muppet followed us in with no avi kit, but luckily nothing moved and we were all safe at the end of the run, we rode to the bottom of Fornet, took the gondola back up and rode it again, still no one had been down bar us!!! Fresh tracks again? AMAZING!!!

The third run was very different. The off-piste was so busy and over-crowded that it looked like a piste! On the traverse line back round to the top of the gondola my mate dropped like maybe two metres below the line and caught the edge of a slab. He slid out to the side of it and was fine but it was proper scary. The light was so flat that I didn’t even see it was a slide until he started to tumble.

The skiers on the traverse line above didn’t seem to even notice. Flat light is a nightmare, time for some new lenses me thinks!

I had some epic powder days at the start of the season, it was amazing how long it stayed untracked, and the snow kept on falling, covering our tracks! Magic!

The night life wasn’t bad either. Saying that, I don’t drink as a general rule, I like to get up early for the snow! But hey, I hadn’t started work yet so I might as well go see what was happening. I met the chalet chef again, and it was then I found out that no one’s perfect. This amazing guy was all ready in love with someone else and wanted ‘a six month’ fling. Not convinced on that like. Still, I really did like him and may have spent the night, against my better judgement, he really was lovely though!

Saloon Bar had a ‘Pimp’s and Hoe’s’night which followed and I went with some friends, intending not to drink. I met the Chalet chef again, and pathetically got very drunk on my one free drink and a single shot at that party. It was in my drunken state that I ended up in bed with him again. Ooops! Time to grow a pair and stay away maybe? It hasn’t happened since, and now we seem to have settled into being just friends pretty well!
Back to riding, and last Wednesday I had the best day EVER! Freeriding in St Foy with an amazing guide and an amazing group of people! That’s the stuff dreams are made of!

We had an early start, and left Val d’Isere before nine. The car was packed with ski’s and boards, and off-piste packs. We were all excited, some of us knew what to expect, and others had no idea. I was one of the latter. I had never skied in St Foy before, but had heard the almost legendary tales of the snow on a good day there. Our guide for the day, Frederic Baude (Fred) from SnoCool, was the kind of guy you instantly liked, and he had a snowboard with him, an instant plus in my books (he can ski too though). In St Foy Station we picked up our ski passes (with Carre Neige insurance just in case) and headed toward the first lift.

Our group was comprised of three skiers and four snowboarders (one being the guide), so it was a complete mix. We were joined by Fred’s sister and brother in-law for the mornings expedition too, both on snowboards. We were all more than competent skiers and snowboarders, and looking forward to the days riding.

We went right to the top of St Foy, using three of the four chairlifts, and when we reached the summit of the final one, we strapped our equipment onto our packs and began to hike. We headed to the Pointe de la Foglietta, which is between forty-five minutes and an hour’s worth of walking. The views were out of this world, panoramic beauty all the way up. Our guide, Fred, was perfect, he chose a pace that everyone could follow, and was patient and helpful over all the places where we had a bit of a scramble.

When we reached what we thought was our destination, we were disheartened to see that it looked rather tracked out, had this really been worth the hike? Only then did Fred let us in on one of his secrets, a little further along the ridge, a slide across an open face, and a short scramble later, we arrived at an untouched powder field, accessed by a very narrow shelf round the rock, but all the same, it was perfect.

The ride down was out of this world, the snow was perfect and Fred knew the lines well enough to make sure none of the snowboarders got stuck on the flat. The bottom of the slope flattened out slowly into some variable terrain, a few trees, some wind lips and other bumps and lumps. The boys were launching off the wind lips, and the girls weren’t doing half bad either. The bottom of the run was a little bit sticky, being a little too flat, but we got across it, and then onto a thrilling, almost white knuckle ride though the trees, ducking and diving under the few which had fallen across the path. We skied though a village seldom used in the winter, and the down to a perfectly situated bus stop. Fred had timed it perfectly and within ten minutes we were on the bus, heading toward our next run. It was out of this world.

Now Val’s got more snow again, and my heart is breaking because I’m supposed to be driving my mate to the airport tomorrow, which is supposed to be the only bluebird day this week. Totally Gutted.

Unfortunately, because of staffing issues the webcast didn’t go ahead, so all of you at home didn’t get to witness our very own Katie Blundell take on her first ever 6*TTR event! Stoked to see her compete, proud of you love! The 25 girls wasted no time getting down to business, with Austrian rider Anna Gasser setting the pace in her first run.

Girls were throwing it down left, right and center in a bid to take part in the 8 girl final. Charlotte Van Gils was the only girl to take on the larger kicker, but unfortunately came up short on a front 540. Cheryl Maas proved exactly why she was recently voted Snowboarder Magazine’s Girl Rider of the Year by throwing down a massive stylish Backside 720 followed by a boardslide on the rail.

After the second runs were done, and the eight finalists were finalised we took a very quick tea break in the riders lounge where everyone seemed to be throwing pasta and soup into their faces while warming up, before needing to head out into the cold again.

The final was dominated by Canadian rider Spencer O’Brien who put down a 90.50point run on her first go with a huge frontside 720 and gap to noseblunt on the rail. Sina Candrian did her best to take the top spot but none of her runs could quite shift Spencers lead. And just because she can, Spencer O’Brien decide to beat her initial score and put down a solid 93.45points in her follow up run with yet another stylish frontside 720, this time followed by a gap to frontboard slide. Boom.

Having taken first place, Spencer has now pushed her way into 2nd place on the TTR rankings and got her invite to the Snowboard World Championships next month. So how do you celebrate banking $20,000? Well Spencer has changed her flights and is planning on sticking around in Davos to shred the powder!
