Aftermath Of 2023 Election: What Happens to Naira Scarcity?

2023-03-01T11:28:00.006+01:00

After the announcement by CBN that old notes are to be totally faced out by Feb 10, which was later extended by a week to February 17. And the excruciating cash crunch that followed the policy, certain APC Governors like El-Rufai, Dapo Abiodun, Ganduje etc were confident that Old naira notes will still be spent in Nigeria for a long time and called CBN bluff. Do you think with the election results that has seen Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President Elect, that the policy will be scrapped and Old naira notes will be allowed to be legal tender again, at least until the new notes are evenly distributed in the country?

“THE ERA OF RENEWED HOPE“

By The President-Elect

of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

March 1, 2023

My fellow Nigerians,

I am profoundly humbled that you have elected me to serve as the 16th President of our beloved Republic. This is a shining moment in the life of any man and affirmation of our democratic existence. From my heart, I say thank you.

Whether you are Batified, Atikulated, Obidient, Kwankwasiyya, or have any other political affiliation, you voted for a better, more hopeful nation and I thank you for your participation and dedication to our democracy.

You decided to place your trust in the democratic vision of a Nigeria founded on shared prosperity and one nurtured by the ideals of unity, justice, peace and tolerance. Renewed hope has dawned in Nigeria.

We commend INEC for running a free and fair election. The lapses that did occur were relatively few in number and were immaterial to the final outcome. With each cycle of elections, we steadily perfect this process so vital to our democratic life.

Today, Nigeria stands tall as the giant of Africa. It shines even brighter as the continent’s biggest democracy.

I thank all who supported my campaign. From President Buhari who adeptly led my campaign as its chairman, to my Vice Presidential Candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima.

To the progressive governors of our party and this nation, to the party leadership, to our loyal party members. I owe you a debt of gratitude. To the entire campaign organisation, I thank you sincerely.

I thank my loving wife and dear family whose support was ceaseless and inspiring. Without you, this victory would not be possible.

I am grateful to Almighty God. By His mercy, I was born a son of Nigeria and through His sublime purpose, I find myself the victor of this election. May He grant me the wisdom and courage to lead the nation to the greatness He alone has destined for it.

Finally, I thank the Nigerian people for their abiding belief in our democracy. I shall be a fair leader to all Nigerians. I will be in tune with your aspirations, charge up your energies and harness your talents to deliver a nation that we can be proud of.

To my fellow candidates, former VP Atiku, former governor Kwankwaso, former governor Obi and all others, I extend the hand of friendship. This was a competitive, high-spirited campaign.

You have my utmost respect.

Political competition must now give way to political conciliation and inclusive governance.

During the election, you may have been my opponent but you were never my enemy. In my heart, you are my brothers.

Still, I know some candidates will be hard put to accept the election results. It is your right to seek legal recourse. What is neither right nor defensible is for anybody to resort to violence. Any challenge to the electoral outcome should be made in a court of law, and not in the streets.

I also ask my supporters to let peace reign and tensions fade. We ran a principled, peaceful and progressive campaign. The aftermath of our campaign must be as benign.

Yes, there are divisions amongst us that should not exist. Many people are uncertain, angry and hurt; I reach out to every one of you. Let the better aspects of our humanity step forward at this fateful moment. Let us begin to heal and bring calm to our nation.

Now, to you, the young people of this country, I hear you loud and clear. I understand your pains, your yearnings for good governance, a functional economy and a safe nation that protects you and your future.

I am aware that for many of you, Nigeria has become a place of abiding challenges, limiting your ability to see a bright future for yourselves.

Remodelling our precious national home requires the harmonious efforts of all of us, especially the youth. Working together, we shall move this nation as never before.

My running mate, Vice President-elect Shettima, and I understand the challenges ahead. More importantly, we also understand and deeply value the talent and innate goodness of you, the Nigerian people. We pledge to listen and to do the difficult things, the big deeds, that put us on the path of irreversible progress. Hold us firmly to account, but please give us a chance first.

Together, we shall build a brighter and more productive society for today, tomorrow and for years to come.

Today, you have given me the greatest honour you can bestow on one man.

In return, I will give you my utmost as your next President and Commander-in-chief. Peace, unity and prosperity shall be the cornerstones of the society we intend to build. When you gaze upon what we shall accomplish in the coming years, you shall speak with pride at being a Nigerian.

I thank you all.

God bless you all.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

INEC: Bola Ahmed Tinubu Declared winner of Nigeria's presidential election

2023-03-01T08:08:00.001+01:00

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has declared the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the president-elect of the election conducted on Saturday 25th February, 2023.

Tinubu, former Lagos State governor, was announced the president-elect after the 70-year-old polled 8,794,726 votes to emerge winner of election.

The INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu made this announcement at the International Collation Centre in Abuja during the early hours of Wednesday.

Tinubu won the election ahead of other contenders — the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Atiku Abubakar; the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi; and the New Nigeria Peoples Party candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The three leading presidential candidates won in 12 states each while Kwankwaso claimed only Kano State.

Tinubu edged Atiku, a former vice president and his closest challenger, with no fewer than 1.8 million votes.

The Media reports that the 2023 presidential election is the first time that Tinubu contested for the nation’s top job. The former senator left office as a two-term governor of Lagos State in 2007 and is credited with leading the coalition that ousted the PDP from power in 2015 and has extended his influence beyond the South-West region in recent years.

Aside from Tinubu; Obi; Atiku, and Kwankwaso, other candidates that gunned for the nation’s oval office include Dumebi Kachikwu of the African Democratic Congress; Kola Abiola, People’s Redemption Party; Omoyele Sowore, Africa Action Congress; Adewole Adebayo, Social Democratic Party; Malik Ado-Ibrahim, Young Progressive Party; Prof Christopher Imumulen, Accord Party; Prof Peter Umeadi, All Progressives Grand Alliance; and Yusuf Mamman Dan Talle, Allied Peoples Movement.

The list also includes Hamza Al-Mustapha, Action Alliance; Sani Yusuf, Action Democratic Party; Nnnadi Osita, Action Peoples Party; Oluwafemi Adenuga, Boot Party; Osakwe Felix Johnson, National Rescue Movement; and Nwanyanwu Daniel Daberechukwu, Zenith Labour Party.

A tally of the votes announced by electoral officials from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Tinubu, in Borno, polled 252,282 votes across the 27 local government areas and was declared the winner by the state Collation Officer, Prof. Jude Rabo.

Atiku and Obi could only garner 190,921 votes and 7,205, respectively while Kwankwaso amassed 4,626 votes.

The Federal Capital Territory, however, proved to be a game changer for the Labour Party, which floored both Tinubu and his PDP counterpart.

Obi’s popularity in Abuja fetched him 281,717 votes while the former Lagos governor and the former VP shared the remaining slots of 90,902 votes and 74,149 respectively. Kwankwaso also polled 4,517 votes.

But Tinubu made up for his losses in some northern and middle belt states which included Zamfara, Kwara, Kogi, Benue and Kogi States.

In Benue, the APC amassed 310,468 votes to relegate LP (308,372), PDP (130,081) and NNPP (4,740) to second, third and fourth places.

In Zamfara State, he polled 298,396 votes against LP’s 1,660; NNPP’s 4,044 and the PDP’s 193,978 votes.

As expected, Obi soared above other candidates in Plateau where he won by 466,272 votes compared to APC’s 307,195; PDP’s 243,808 while NNPP settled for 8,869 votes.

The states won by Tinubu so far include Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Kwara, Ekiti, Kogi, Benue, Zamfara and Jigawa, while Atiku emerged victorious in Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Kaduna, Kebbi, Bayelsa, Adamawa and Akwa Ibom.

On the other hand, Obi has won Lagos, Enugu, Cross River, Nasarawa, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Delta and Plateau states as well as the FCT.

In the final computation, APC polled 8,794,726 votes, PDP amassed 6,984,520 votes, LP scored 6,101,533 votes and NNPP garnered 1,496,687 votes.

Declaring Tinubu as the winner, the INEC boss said, “That Tinubu Bola Ahmed of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

Parents of slain UNIPORT students ask Linda Ikeji to suspend premiere of ‘Dark October’

Parents of slain UNIPORT students ask Linda Ikeji to suspend premiere of ‘Dark October’

Aggrieved parents of the four students of the University of Port Harcourt, who were killed by a mob in the Aluu Community in 2012 have asked the popular blogger, Linda Ikeji and Netflix, to suspend the planned premiere of their movie, Dark October.

The movie centres on the murder of the students codenamed Aluu-4 in October 2012.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, by Livingstone Wechie, the Executive Director of a human rights group, The Integrity Friends for Truth and Peace The initiative (TIFPI), the families of the slain students said they were consulted before the shooting of the movie which has been scheduled for premiere on February 3.

The development, according to them, will bring back unpleasant memories they had managed to bury.

They added that the movie has “reawakened the already doused trauma caused by the tragic killing of their children.”

The statement read: “The attention of the four bereaved families of the ill-fated Aluu 4 incident have been drawn to a widely advertised movie titled: Dark October’ which was produced by a known blogger by the name Linda Ikeji as stated therein.

“For the records and sadly so, Linda Ikeji produced the movie without seeking the consent of the affected families and parents of the unforgettable Aluu 4 victims.

The question to Linda Ikeji is: Can you cry more than the bereaved or do you not have some conscience and humanity in you as a parent that you have become?

“I have been instructed in writing through my organisation, The Integrity Friends for Truth and Peace Initiative TIFPI, by the four affected families, that is the parents of late Lloyd Toku-Mike, Chiadika Biringa, Ugonna Obuzor and Tekena Elkanah, to represent them and ensure that justice is done in this matter.

“This is to the effect that Linda Ikeji acted both of her own volition and on a frolic of her own as she failed, refused and neglected to seek the consent of the affected and families/parents of these boys whose names and the story of the Aluu 4 incident form the entire essence of the said movie

Rapper 22Gz Arrested in New York on Attempted Murder Charge

2022-06-15T00:30:00.001+01:00

American, Brooklyn drill rapper 22Gz was apprehended in New York City on Sunday morning on an attempted murder charges over a Shooting in March in which three people were injured, Gistmattaz has confirmed.

The 24-year-old rapper was taken into custody after he arrived at John F. Kennedy Airport, as he returned to the city from Atlanta for his scheduled appearance at Sunday’s Hot 97 Summer Jam concert festival, Brooklyn prosecutors confirmed. The New York Post first reported the news.

The charges – attempted murder in the second degree as well as several others – are related to a March 6 shooting at a Brooklyn party hall where three people were non-fatally shot. One of the victims identified 22Gz (real name Jeffrey Mark Alexander) as the shooter, leading to the charges.

“This shooting not only wounded the victim, but endangered the lives of everyone in a crowded club,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez wrote on Twitter. “Senseless gang rivalries fuel much of the gun violence in our communities and I remain committed to vigorously prosecuting anyone who engages in this criminal conduct.”

A rep for 22Gz declined to comment on the charges.

Inmate records from the NYC Department of Corrections confirm that 22Gz was arrested Sunday and then held on Rikers Island with bail set at $500,000; it’s unclear if he posted bail. His next court hearing is set for July 19.

The rapper is also facing charges of second-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and first-degree reckless endangerment.

UN: WFP suspends part of its food aid in South Sudan as funds dry up

2022-06-15T00:24:00.001+01:00

The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) suspends part of its food aid in South Sudan due to a funding shortage – heightening the risk of starvation to 1.7 million people.

The move to suspend aid will affect almost a third of the 6.2 million people in South Sudan the WFP had planned to assist this year. It comes as global food prices soar amid the Russia-Ukraine war, leaving humanitarian agencies working in Africa to work with funding shortfalls.

Climate change is also exacerbating the situation, with South Sudan facing severe flooding, localised drought as well as man-made conflict that has left more than 60 percent of the population grappling with severe hunger.

“South Sudan is facing its hungriest year since independence,” the WFP’s acting country director in South Sudan, Adeyinka Badejo-Sanogo, told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday. “We are already in a crisis, but we are trying to avert the situation from becoming more explosive.”

Badejo-Sanogo, who was speaking from Juba, South Sudan’s capital, said the WFP urgently needs $426m to cover needs for the next six months and dial back what she described as an “explosive situation”.

The WFP said it had exhausted all options before suspending food assistance, including halving rations in 2021.

It said that following the food aid suspension, it is now hoping to reach 4.5 million South Sudanese in need, including 87,000 people already experiencing famine-like conditions.

The Norwegian Refugee Council listed the situation in the country as one of the world’s 10 most neglected displacement crises, highlighting the discrepancies in fund-raising for African countries, compared with that for Ukrainian refugees.

It highlighted that it took just one day this March for a humanitarian appeal for Ukraine to be almost fully funded.

“The war in Ukraine has demonstrated the immense gap between what is possible when the international community rallies behind a crisis, and the daily reality for millions of people suffering in silence within these crises on the African continent that the world has chosen to ignore,” the aid group’s chief Jan Egeland said.
