SUBH-EKSHANAH – One whose very gaze brings streams of auspiciousness to the devotee

RAAMO VIRAAMO VIRAJO MAARGO NEYO NAYO-ANAYAH

रामो विरामो विरजो मार्गो नेयो नयोऽनयः .
वीरः शक्तिमतां श्रेष्ठो धर्मो धर्मविदुत्तमः .. ४३..

RAAMAH – Raamah is ‘that which revels in every form or that in which all yogins in their meditation revel’. The Yogis delight in contemplating on the Lord who is Nityaananda. In Padmapurana, it is clearly said: “In Him, who is Eternal Bliss, Pure Consciousness, and Endless, the Yogis revel”. Raamah also mean that “One who is the most handsome”

VI-RAAMAH – There is cessation (Viraama) of samsara (repeated births and deaths) for creatures when they attain Him. Lord is the abode of perfect rest. Any other rest is just temporary. When we become one with the Lord, there is no more world of experiences of joy and sorrow; heat and cold; pleasure and pain because we offer our mind and intellect at the feet of the Lord and there is nothing called ours which creates the thoughts. That state is called Vi-raamah.

VIRAJAH – Virajah is one who is passionless; One who is not associated with the agitations of the Mind (rajas). When does the mind get agitated? When the mind identifies itself with the sense objects of the world outside, it gets into desire-fever and the result is the agitation. Vishaya comes from the word ‘visha’. The Sukham that comes from the objects of the world are poisonous to us. One who detaches from it and attaches himself to the Lord inside him becomes passionless. When we attach ourselves to the Lord, all worldly things drop off from our life. Holding the feet of the Lord with both the hands is the way to be passionless.

MAARGAH – He by knowing whom yogis who aspire for salvation are considered to have attained immortality is the Way to immortality. There is no other way to know Him except renouncing ‘I’. For complete liberation, there is no way other than realizing the Self, Sree Naraayana.

NEYAH – Neyah means ‘the Guide; the Conductor’. By right knowledge we, the Jivas are led to being of the nature of identity with the Lord. Through surrender to the Lord Narayana, the devotee develops the integration within and when fully integrated, he becomes meditator and through meditation, the Highest Goal of life is achieved. Therefore Vishnu, the Supreme Lord is Neyah, the Guide for us.

NAYAH – Nayah is ‘one who leads’. When the true devotee slowly and steadily gains his detachment from the outer world, he moves himself more and more into the way of awareness of Consciousness. The one who leads such seeker is again the grace of the same Self – Atmabala. The Lord thus in three ways helps us namely as Margah, the path, the Goal and Neyah, the guide to reach that goal.

A-NAYAH – He leads every seeker and for Him there is no leader. So He is glorified as A-Nayah. If the ego is led by the Lord (as Naya) to the Highest, then when the supreme state is reached, it has none to lead or guide It. He is everywhere at all times. When that state is attained there is nothing other than Him in this world of plurality, above and below; up and down; right and left. It is like a rain drop getting merged into the ocean, complete identity with Him.

PARARDDHIH – One who has Supreme manifestations (Riddhi) is Pararddhih. The Vibhootis of the Lord explained in the tenth chapter of Gita explains how the divinity underlines every being and everything in this universe. The Lord Himself says that the Vibutis or Glories of the Lord are immeasurable and He has just listed a few for our understanding. Such is the Supremacy of the Lord.

PARAMA-SPASHTAH – One who is extremely vivid is Parama-spashtah. He is clear, extremely clear to those devotees who have controlled their senses and mind from all agitations and disturbances of thoughts. In that steady mind, which is without oscillation, the Lord is experienced clearly at the seat of meditation. That which is very close to us can only be clear’. There is nothing closer to us than the Self; the Lord inside us. Only we fail to see Him with all our pre-occupations of mind.

TUSHTAH – One who is ever-contented is Tushtah. Lord is the One who is very happy at the minimum offering of the devotee. Lord says in Gita: “I accept even if you offer some leaf or flower or fruit or a spoon of water, happily, if it is offered with love”. When we understand that the Lord who is the source of everything is inside us, can there be any desires inside us? The time we realize this Supreme Truth, we are content here and now. We become ever happy; loving to everyone and every being.

PUSHTAH – One who is ever-full is Pushtah. The Lord nature is Poornatvam; completeness. Any amount of water taken from ocean never lowers the level of water in the ocean or any amount of water added to ocean never increases the level of water in the ocean. It remains the same always. The Self is complete within itself. If we understand this truth, anything taken from us or given to us will not make us sad or happy. We remain with equanimity of mind. We don’t run to shopping malls or gold jewellery to make us complete. Without anything we are complete here and now with the Supreme Lord residing in us.

SUBH-EKSHANAH – One who has ‘All auspicious gaze’ is Subh-Ekshanah. The very sight of the Lord brings immeasurable auspiciousness and peace to the devotee. Auspiciousness is the state where there is no dirt present; where there are no more sins. When the Lord or Self is realized and experienced inside us, there can be no more inauspiciousness in our life. The dirt of life is our thinking that we are this body, mind and intellect. When we understand that whatever is constantly changing cannot be the Lord, and the changeless support inside us in the form of Consciousness is the Lord, we go beyond all sins. That very sight which takes us away from any form of thoughts is the ‘sight (kadai kann paarvai)’ of the Lord.

KARANAM – Lord is the instrumental cause (Nimitta kaarana) cause in creating this vast universe

GAHANAH – One who cannot be comprehended by the mind and intellect; the un-knowable

GUHAH – One who dwells in the cave of the heart; one who is the very core of every living being

VYAVASAAYO VYAVATHAANAH SAMSTHAANAH STHAANADO-DHRUVAH

व्यवसायो व्यवस्थानः संस्थानः स्थानदो ध्रुवः .
परर्द्धिः परमस्पष्टस्तुष्टः पुष्टः शुभेक्षणः .. ४२..

VYAVASAAYAH – Vyavasaayah means ‘the Resolute’. Being of the nature of Pure Wisdom, there is no vacillation in the Lord.

All oscillations are in the level of mind and unsteady intellect. To steadily apply ourselves in our sadhana of withdrawing ourselves from our identification with body, mind and intellect or non-real Self, unless we come to the experience of the Self is ‘Yoga’. Vyavassayah or the resolute is one who is always in Yoga.

In Gita the Lord tells to Arjuna: “The intellect of one who is practicing yoga is single-pointed without vacillation like the lamp at the breezeless spot”. And the Lord further explains further to Arjuna: “those who are bhoga and aishwarya, disturbing the single pointedness of the intellect, cannot have steady mind and consistent in the pursuit of yoga”.

VYAVASTHAANAH – The Lord is the support or basis or substratum (Vyavasthaanah) of the entire universe of plurality. It is through His law the nature acts. He is the one who administers everything in this world. In tamil we say ‘Avanindri oar anuvum asaiyaadu’ – without His grace, not even an atom can move.

SAMSTHAANAH – The Lord is the ‘ultimate authority, the state or Goal’. The whole world of names and forms enter into Him at the time of Pralayam. And this pralayam is happening everyday in our life in the deep sleep. All our thoughts goes and merges in the Self. It goes and rests There. In the morning, it comes back into us when we open our eyes. The Lord is our Goal. His abode is so peaceful and beautiful. Once we go and experience it in the silence, world is never an attraction for us.

STHAANADAH – Every living being, according to the actions performed and thoughts they had, gather himself vaasanaas. According to these vaasanaas we take birth again in this world with the package on our head. Thus one who gives (dada) the appropriate abode (sthaana) to each individual (jiva) is called Sthaanah. He is the karma-phala-dhaataa.

DHRUVAH – Lord is Dhruvah which means ‘one who is stable; firm; imperishable’. It is on Him which all the changes take place in the individual as well as the world of pluralities. He is the changless Self which witnesses every change in the body, mind and intellect. He illumines all our thoughts and emotions. The one who is firm in us, changeless in us amidst of all changes is Dhruvah, the Supreme Lord.

PARAMESHWARAH – The Supreme Lord; One who is omnipotent and All-glorious

KARANAM KAARANMA KARTAAVIKARTAA GAHANO GUHAH

उद्भवः क्षोभणो देवः श्रीगर्भः परमेश्वरः .

करणं कारणं कर्ता विकर्ता गहनो गुहः .. ४१.

KARANAM – That which is most useful in fulfilling any piece of work is called the tool or the instrument. For this beautiful world of pluralities to come He is the instrumental-cause (Nimitta Kaarnaa)

KAARANAM – He is the very material cause of the universe. When the potter makes the pot, he uses the clay which exists already. What Lord would have used to create this universe? Where was the material available? This name explains that question that the Lord Himself is the instrumental cause and also the material cause. Like a spider brings its own saliva to make its web, the whole world has emerged out of Him like saliva.

KARTAA – Kartaa means ‘the Doer’. He is the one in whose presence alone all activities are possible. He is the light of everything. He is the light of the subtlest of the subtle. There is only one ‘Doer’ in this world and that is the Supreme Lord. Kartaa is one who can freely perform all the functions of creation, sustenance and destruction.

VI-KARTAA – Vi-kartaa is One who creates the infinite varieties that constitute the universe. Everything we see in this universe moving or unmoving; sentient or insentient is His form. Having created all this He never claims doership to His actions. He possess the greatest of the Vairaghyam. In Gita He says : “All are in Me and I am not in them”

GAHANAH – Gahanah means ‘the un-knowable’. Knowing Him through our senses, mind and intellect is impossible. He is beyond all these three instruments of perception. We cannot see or think or know like other objects of world. He is understood when all forms, names and thoughts die in us. In silence, we can experience Him.

GUHAH – One who dwells in the cave of the heart is the Guhah. He is the core of every living being.

We have a beautiful story of Lord and boy who play hide and seek. Wherever the Lord hides, the boy was able to locate him easily. Finally the Lord went and hid Himself in the heart of the king. Nobody never looked into their heart and so nobody found Him.

The mind always takes us into external world of false happiness and the world of pluralities. Cave is a place which is difficult to approach. After approaching also, to get into it we find it impossible. The heart is reached when the mind and intellect are given up. We need to dig into our thoughts, move stones of ego and walk in the ups and downs of sadhana. Just by looking outside we will not know what is inside the cave unless we are walk into it. Our Upanishads and all scriptures say loudly that “He is there in the inner cave of our heart”. We need to give up world to know and experience this Self, the Supreme Lord.

UDBHAVAH – As He is the material cause from which the entire universe arises and therefore He is ‘ The Originator’ , udbhavah. It can also mean ‘ One who is again and again born as the endless jeevas under the urge of their own vaasanas.’ Because He is free from bhava or samsaara He is called udbhavah.

KSHOBHANAH – At the time of creation, entering into Prakriti and Purusha He agitated them to movement and so He is called ‘ Kshobanah , the Agitator.’ If the Self is not there, there can be no expression or movement in life. Everything would have remained completely inert and insensient like dolls. The Lord through His role as an agitater thrills the whole world and also brings beauty to all the names and forms.

DEVAH – One who revels is Devah. Devah means to conquer, to shine and to praise.
SREE-GARBHAH – One who contains all glories within; One in whom are all glories is Sree Garbah. The glory of the Lord is the universe and this universe resides in Him. And therefore He is the abode of Sree or Aishwaryam or powers and glories.

PARAMESHWARAH – He is the Supreme and is able to control or rule over everything, so He is the Parameshvarah. The Supreme Consciousness is the one expression in all the deities.

VIKSHARAH – Ksharah means ‘decaying’, ‘that which is perishing’. So Viksharah means ‘imperishable’. All the things and beings in this world are conditioned by time. Anything conditioned by time is perishable. The Lord as said in the before names – is the ancient – one who is beyond time and also He is the concept of time. So He is unchanging and always imperishable.

ROHITAH – The term Rohita’ means fish. This name indicates the Lord’s incarnation as fish (Matsya avatar). When the entire world was submerged in the waters of the deluge, the only living creatures that were available at that time could be fishes. Lord could incarnate only in the form of fish at that time. One who has manifested to serve the living creatures as the Fish among the fishes is Rohitah. It also means one who has red fins.

MAARGAH – Maarga means ‘the path’. The Lord is the path for us. To realize one’s own true nature, human mind has to hold on to a divine form and that is Lord Vishnu. He is the very way as well as the Goal. He is the One whom seekers of the Highest meditate upon in order to reach the Supreme. Gita loudly says that ‘He is our grandfather, the father, the mother, the support, the life, the goal, the way, the witness and everything to us’.

HETUH – Hetuh means ‘the cause’. One who is the cause for the whole universe; one who is the cause for all that is existing and non-existing. He is the material, instrumental and also efficient cause of this universe.

The potter makes pots, but without clay and water, he cannot do so. The potter is only an instrument, and hence he is the nimitta karana. God, who has created clay and water, is the upadana karana.

DAAMODARAH – He is one who is known through a mind which is purified (Udara) by means of self-control (Dama) and other qualities (sama, uparathi, titiksha, samaadhaana). In the childhood times of Krishna, the Lord was tied with a cord (daama) round His waist (Udara) and hence He is known as Daamaodarah.

SAHAH – Sahah means ‘All-enduring’. The Lord is one who has patience at everything and is one who readily forgives all the mistakes of His sincere devotees.

SARVA-LAKSHANA-LAKSHANYAH – He is the one Self that is ultimately proved by all scientific investigations and philosophical enquiries. As said in Gita, whether it is through the formful worship (dvaita) or through formless worship (Advaita), the Ultimate Truth experienced by the seeker is He alone. The Jnana obtained through all Pramaanas is the Supreme Lord Vishnu, the inner consciousness of all beings.

LAKSHMEEVAN – One who is the consort of Lakshmi Maata. He is the Self (Purusha) that throws light on the entire world of changes (Prakriti). Gita says beautifully “Arjuna! Whatever there is born – whether moving or unmoving – it has come into being due to the union of Purusha and Prakriti”. Thus the manifested Lord is ever wedded to Lakshmi. Lakshmi also means effulgent and therefore the Lord is Ever-effulgent. He is Pure Consciousness that illumines everything and so He is Lakshmeevan.

SAMITINJAYAH – Samiti means ‘battle’. Jayah means victorious. One who is ever-Victorious is Samitinjayah. He is the destroyer of all pains in the individuality of the devotees. The root of the pain is the ego and that Asura is conquered by the Lord, blessing the seeker with realization, freedom from Samsara or bondage.

ATULAH SARABHAH BHEEMAH SAMAYAJNO HAVIRHARIH

अतुलः शरभो भीमः समयज्ञो हविर्हरिः .

सर्वलक्षणलक्षण्यो लक्ष्मीवान् समितिञ्जयः .. ३९..

ATULAH – Atulah means ‘Incomparable’. Gita says: “For Thy equal exists not, where is another superior to Thee in the three worlds”. Vedanta explains: “The one without the second”. Anything we say great’ is through the body, mind and intellect and the greatness is time bound. Where is King Ashoka’s greatness? Where are the great singers of the past? Rulers? Warriors? – All gone with time. Lord is beyond time and space. There is nothing like Him or equal to Him. He is incomparable Glory; the Supreme.

SARABHAH – Bodies are called Sara because they are perishable. The life that presides over the perishable body is the Self, the Lord. In Gita the Lord says wonderfully: “In all Kshetras – bodies, I am the One Kshethrajna, the Self”. Because He dwells and shines forth through bodies, Lord is called Sarabhah. It also means Lord who is in the form of Parameshwara. Lord Shiva had once taken the incarnation of Sarabha, a creature with eight legs, capable of killing even the lions.

BHEEMAH – One who is a mighty and terrible to those who are cruel and sensuous in the world is Bheemah. To the bad, the Lord is always a frightful power which follows them as their shadow in the form of death. He is the shelter and protector for those who are devoted to Him and who are good in nature.

SAMAYAJNAH – One who knows all six systems of philosophy or one who knows the exact time (samaya) for creation, sustenance and destruction or one whose worship (Yajna) the Lord equally in all beings is Samayajnah. Prahlaad says in Bhagavatham “To be equal in all conditions is the real worship of Achyuta”

HAVIR-HARIH – The receiver of all Yajnas is the Supreme Lord. He is the Lord of all yajnas. Gita explains this beautifully: “He is the One to whom the devotee offers His oblations, and He is the one who receives them in all dedicated activities. The person who offers it and the equipment through which he offers and the fire is He alone”. The Lord is called Havis (the rice what we offer is yajnam is called havis) as He is worshipped through oblation. Harih means “One who loots away all Vaasanaas”. By performing Yajnam of offering the mind and ego to the Lord is the way we can reach Hari.

MAHARDDHIH – Riddhi means one who has great prosperity and power. One who has both prosperity and power is said to be glorious or one who has Aishwaryam. Mahariddhih means ‘one who has by His very nature glory ever with him’

RIDDHAH – One who has expanded Himself to be the universe is Riddhah. As Gita and other Upanishads and also the Mahapuranas explain, He is the one who is existing in this world of plurality or in this world of innumerable names and forms.

VRIDDHAATMAA – Vriddhaatmaa means ‘Ancient Self’. Ancient or modern refers to period of time. In the Self there is no concept of time. Time is the interval between two thoughts and this is always measured by our intellect. In animals or other beings there is no awareness of time because of no intellect. The Self is beyond the intellect and hence beyond time too. He was before creation. Along with creation time is born and the one who has created the universe and time is the Self, the Supreme Lord Vishnu. So He is the ancient. Bhagavat Gita refers to Self as ‘Puraanam’ – the most ancient.

MAHAAKSHAH – Akshah means eyes. Mahaakshah means one who is ‘Great eyed’. Our idea is that eyes generally perceive what is external. What is so great about Lord’s eyes? The eyes that can see not only the world-of-objects, but also x-ray through them and see all that are happening deep within the heart of all creatures. He never winks His eyes. Seeing all at all times as the Consciousness that illumines everything at all times in all hearts is the Great eyed Vishnu, the Supreme Self.

GARUDA-DHVAJAH – One who has eagle (Garuda) as His insignia on His flag is Garuda-dhavajah. The eagle is considered as the vehicle of Lord Narayana. In the Vibhuti Yoga of Gita , the Lord says “ I am Garuda among the birds.” This bird ever flies high and from above sees even the minutest speck of dirt in the world. The eagle after spying the prey, swoops down and takes it away, thus purifying the atmosphere. Similarly, the Lord never allows any negative thought to come into the heart of His devotees. Bhagavad Gita beautifully says “Even a comfirmed sinner, if he worships Me with unwavering faith and devotion must verily be considered as righteous , for he has taken the right resolve.” When Lord enters our life everything in us purified and we start functioning through the heart instead of the mind.
