We are off and running for 2012!

Believe it or not, this is the 7th year for Give a Kid a Chance! Our meetings for planning will be held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at SERV Ministries, 3145 Marietta Hwy., Canton. Please join us if you’d like to get involved!

We are so blessed with the awesome volunteers who show up faithfully to help make sure the children in the county are prepared for each school year. If you have a youth group, a boy scout or girl scout troop, a homeschool group or anyone who needs volunteer hours, contact us!

While we have a lot of folks returning to lead some areas of the outreach, we still need help! Here are the areas where we need support:

Registration: Looking for an energetic person to help distribute and collect registration forms from all over the county.

Corporate sponsors: In-kind donations or monetary ones are tax deductible! Contact mbthames@windstream.net.

Civic support: If you are a member of a civic group that is looking to help children in the county, contact barbara@momentumchurch.tv.

Clothes: We collect SCHOOL APPROPRIATE items only – if you’re cleaning out your children’s closets, please let us know and we’ll take those extras off your hands! Contact sogranda@yahoo.com.

Books: A new, popular giveaway at our summer event is nearly new books. If you’re weeding out your collection and want to donate, contact momlandwehr@yahoo.com.

Socks & Underwear: A great way for your VBS program to get involved is to collect socks and underwear (new and packaged) Contact bakerrufer@aol.com if you’d like to donate.

Medical: We offer screenings for hearing, dental, vision and spine and need someone to coordinate the efforts between both churches. It can be done from your kitchen table with your phone! We have a good number of professionals who have volunteered over the years. Just need a coordinator to pull it together! Please contact bfulbright@windstream.net.

Haircuts: Cutting hair at our event is a great way for students at beauty schools to get practice hours that apply toward graduation. You don’t have to commit to an entire day – work in a 3-hour shift, and you’ll be done! It is one of the most popular (and needed) aspects of our outreach. Contact stephaniegraves2@gmail.com.

Thanks to the many many volunteers who came out to help on July 16, 2011! This ministry is a true body of Christ effort and we are always humbled and honored to be a part each year. We will update the site as soon as we compile the figures from Saturday’s event. First number we know – 2,781 filled backpacks were given away! Praise God!!

Etowah High’s Spanish Honors Society makes donation

Thanks to club advisor Tamara Linares and honor society students for raising $204 for our kids! They also collected school supplies, and presented GAKAC co-founder Cheryl Ruffer with a check on May 25. Kids helping kids – it’s a beautiful thing!

Breakfast With Santa raises $250!

Special thanks to Sequoyah senior Caitlin Hollander, who organized a Breakfast With Santa at Ebenezer UMC in Roswell. The event, which was her senior project, was such a success that the church members want to adopt it as an annual tradition! Check out the pictures from that very special day.
