<p><strong>Kids Bodies, Minds and Spirits</strong></p>
<p>The Body is the Easiest and hence the First thing to Improve.</p>
<p>We have all heard the Body, Mind and Spirit talks from both Real Martial Artists and the various actors in nearly every martial art movie ever made.  The reason it is always mentioned is because it is a Fundamental Truth in what we do, no matter what style you learn or teach.</p>
<p>My opinion is that while all three areas have equal importance, I feel the body is the first place to start.</p>
<p>Look at it this way… A smart kid with a strong spirit but a weak body is unlikely to beat a bully in a pushing match.  But a strong kid who lacks focus and spirit when put in the same position may still land a lucky punch and save his bacon.</p>
<p>Of course the other two areas are important but for this article I want to focus on strengthening the body.</p>
<p>I have included Strength Games for your Kids in the &#8220;Martial Games for Kids&#8221; Newsletters [note: Subscribers Newsletters] to help you get your kids physically prepared for their Martial Art training.  I want to help you get them stronger, it’s up to you to teach them how and when to use that strength.</p>
<p>A long, long time ago in a school far, far away I was once a little kid.  My school was about 50% Maori, Tongan and Polynesian kids.  As a small white kid that can be intimidating.  I’m 6&#8242;2&#8243; and 200lbs (188cm and 95kg) now, but back then I was one of the smallest in my class, a real late bloomer.</p>
<p>The kids in my school loved fighting as a hobby.  They didn’t just punch the other kids they didn’t like, they also beat up their own friends to prove who was the best fighter.</p>
<p>I guess I was lucky back then because I was too small to be a threat, and the few times I did have to fight I’d out wrestle and choke them to submit. (thanks to both of my Grandfathers for teaching me those skills.)</p>
<p>But there was another white guy in my class that Never Ever got picked on.  He was short, not overly popular, and didn’t try to make friends with any of the tough guys.  He never tried to start anything but he also never took any shit from the bigger guys.</p>
<p>The reason no-one ever took him on was because he used to have fun impressing us with simple demos of strength.At lunch he would grab his giant apple from his lunchbox, hold it tightly in both hands and simply tear it in half.We all figured that was nothing until we worked out that none of us could do it, not even the so called toughest guys.</p>
<p>When we would play on the jungle gym, swinging around on the bars, doing chin-up comps with our friends he would be doing single arm chin-ups.Again, not one of my friends could do a single arm chin-up without cheating.</p>
<p>Another time we were all sitting around on the grass in a circle cross legged and all of a sudden he decides to show off by putting his hands on the ground, raising his legs off the ground and moved into a full hand stand and then walks off on his hands.  We all tried that too of course and never got past half way without falling backwards or face planting the ground.</p>
<p>The funny thing is, no one ever saw him fight.We didn&#8217;t know if he could handle himself in a fight or not.He may have been useless, he may have been a natural born killer, but we never found out.  No one even asked him, let alone tried taking him on.</p>
<p>The tough guys never bothered him because they never knew what might happen.Everybody knew that they didn’t want him to get hold of you with that vice grip.</p>
<p>None of us knew if he could fight but we all imagined the damage he would do to someone once he got hold of them.His strength was simply amazing to us and it kept him out of trouble all the way through school.</p>
<p>His Dad had taught him how to get strong by simple body weight exercises and isometric resistance.His Old Man wouldn&#8217;t let him start lifting heavy weights until he turned 15 years old.The stories I just shared above were all things he did as a 10-11 year old.</p>
<p>I wish I had taken more notice of the things he had shown me back then, but he was the only person who did them. All the magazines and people on TV talked about lifting weights.  It seems obvious now that he was all the proof I should have needed to convince me that what his dad taught him was simply awesome.</p>
<p>So, back to <a href="http://www.martialgames4kids.com" target="_blank">teaching kids martial arts</a>… Strength is only 1 of the 4 pillars that create a great Martial Artist.  Body, Mind, Spirit and Consistent Practice will set them apart from the many who start this journey.</p>

<p>Throughout history, people from all over the world have developed martial arts systems of their own. Korean martial art, Japanese martial art and other systems of martial art were created as farmers needed to protect themselves and their lands from invaders. These people, caught between the power struggles that went on around them, had to have some form of self-defense. <p>Russia is no exception. Russia has a long history of internal conflict and invasion. It is a massive country with borders that span over 11 time zones. The Russians came to expect the unexpected when in battle and no two enemies would fight the same. From these encounters, the Russian warriors developed into the type of fighter that reacted on instinct. They had to face the enemy as an individual and adapt to whatever the enemy threw at them. The Russian martial arts had to be as versatile as the men who practiced it.</p>
<p>Russia is so huge that, in the beginning, a standard army was not possible. There were too many tiny villages and towns scattered across the land, as well as too many lords and territories, that made this type of organization nearly impossible. During times of war, men were recruited from the towns and villages to fight and, when the battle was over, they went home. During peacetime, these men would continue to train on their own. This Russian martial arts were tailor-made to fit the common man.</p>
<p>Systema has no <a href="http://martialarts.micronicherecommends.com/Martial-Arts.php" target="_blank">prearranged kumite</a> (choreographed two man fighting) like the martial arts of the Far East. Russian martial arts are fluid &#8212; the goal being able to fight without consciousness. Like the many forms of Eastern martial arts, Russian martial arts started with one &#8220;ideal&#8221; and evolved into many different styles of that form across Russia, each one geared towards that locale&#8217;s specific needs. The basic principals remained consistent and provided the common thread of the Russian martial arts.</p>
<p>In time, the loose teachings solidified. The various towns and villages would show off their skills with friendly competitions amongst themselves. It wasn&#8217;t until 1917 &#8212; when the Communists had taken power &#8212; that all traditions, including Russian martial art, were banned. The system went underground, rather than face severe persecution for outwardly continuing to practice. As in the Far East, some monasteries survived and were left alone by the government and the monks would continue to keep the &#8220;old ways&#8221; alive. Fathers would also teach their sons, handing down the traditions from generation to generation, hoping that it would survive.</p>
<p>When the new Soviet government had to focus on arming their soldiers, they sent agents to find the best fighting systems in the world. They didn&#8217;t have to search too far, the answer was right under their nose. From that point on, the Russian army began instruction in an age-old technique pulled right from the roots of their own heritage.</p>
<p>Today, the <a href="http://ezinearticles.com/?Systema:-The-Martial-Arts-of-Russia&amp;id=627000" target="_blank">martial arts</a> of Russia have been completely subsumed by systema. Mostly used by Spetsnaz, the Russian Special Operation Units, the Russian martial art has still managed to spread across the world and is currently gaining popularity in the United States.</p>
