Starbucks

Dear Friend,

Starbucks stuck its neck out to publicly support the right of all people to marry, regardless of the gender of their partner.

Now it is under attack by the ironically named, ultra-conservative "National Organization for Marriage."1 Already more than 20,000 NOM members have pledged to boycott Starbucks, and NOM is even threatening to run ads against Starbucks in 55 countries.

Let's blow the right wing out of the water by getting more than ten times as many consumers to thank Starbucks for standing up for gay marriage.

Join us in showing our support for Starbucks by signing our giant Thank You card. If 200,000 of us sign it, we'll deliver it to Starbucks executives to give them moral support to keep standing up for equality.

NOM is targeting Starbucks because the company recently stood up publicly to support gay marriage legislation in their home state of Washington.2 When it passed, the bill's lead sponsor said that support from business convinced moderate legislators to vote for it. Without support from companies like Starbucks, the gay marriage law might have failed.3

Now, if Starbucks backtracks because of opposition, then it will set the gay rights struggle back to a time when big corporations couldn't come out and support gay people for fear of public backlash. Even worse, it will embolden anti-gay activists to target other companies that support gay rights, and serve as a lesson to other companies to stay out of the fight for equal rights entirely.

Starbucks isn't perfect—and in the future we'll probably be asking them to improve their policies on other issues. But it's a big deal when a giant multinational corporation with no particular connection to the gay community realizes that there are real business benefits—from better employees to happier customers—to standing up for progressive ideals. And we can't just criticize corporations when they do bad. We also want to encourage them when they do good.

Let's show that supporting equal rights is good business. Click here to add your message to our Thank You card:

http://pol.moveon.org/thankstarbucks/?id=38144-1989786-rVgGtix&t=2

Thanks for everything you do!

–Claiborne, Kaytee, and the rest of us

P.S. Breaking News: NOM had a strategic memo released against their will this week, where they plainly state their goal of driving a "wedge between gays and blacks."4 They even wanted to delay Latino "assimilation" so they could make "support for marriage a key badge of Latino identity—a symbol of resistance to inappropriate assimilation."5 Driving wedges between people and groups is NOM's stock in trade. That's why this isn't just about Starbucks, it's about standing up against these divisive tactics. Click here to thank Starbucks.

Sources:

1.

My name is Temi, am an MPH student intern at the Health Center- Health and wellness department and I’m working on is creating a student advisory group; this group is open to all student regardless of their race or sexual orientation. My goal is to have a very diverse population ( race and sexual orientation) so all students are welcome.

The propose of creating a student advisory group is to bridge through the gap in health disparity and to create a diverse student group that is a cultural representation of Indiana University student. My goal is to create a group that is a well representation of every race and sexual orientation so every voice can be heard.

This group of students will serve as an advocate for other student, to voice their concerns about the health services they deserve at Indiana University Health Center. This is an opportunity for us Indiana University student to make our voice know about the health care we deserve and make history.

There is no deadline, anyone interested can e-mail me, if you will be interested in this project or have any questions, you can contact me by e-mail toekiran@indiana.edu.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Thank you for your time

Temitope Ekiran.

No, neither Barack, nor Mitch, not even Bloomington Mayor, Mark Kruzan has proclaimed the first Friday in March as “Carol Fischer” Day, but her colleagues and friends in the GLBT Student Support Service Office and around the campus wanted to acknowledge Carol’s 25 years of service to Indiana University (including 17 years at the GLBT office) with a special day, so we’re declaring it so! No, you who are IU employees, cannot claim this as a paid holiday…yet, but you ARE invited to stop by our newly-renovated space at 705 E. Seventh Street on Friday, March 2 to wish Carol well and to enjoy a piece of chocolate cake. We’ll have the coffee pot full from 9am-4pm. Stop by anytime.

Students, staff, faculty, alumni, friends from the community are welcome to visit.
We’ll celebrate until the cake is gone and the coffee pot is empty!
Hope YOU can join us at some point during the day.

Doug Bauder, Coordinator, GLBT Student Support Services

Project Homecoming

A new venture for the GLBT Office will be an initiative called “Project Homecoming” where glbt students and allies will contact their former high schools to address glbt student concerns and bullying, in particular. An organizational meeting has already been held and a variety of students (including the current Miss IU, Brianna McClellan) and staff have indicated an interest in this project. Some students have already contacted their former high schools. Others will be visiting them during Spring Break. A packet of resources for high schools has been compiled and is available at the GLBT Office for anyone interested in participating in this initiative, including the web page for “Teaching Tolerance” where the film “BULLIED” can be ordered at no cost. This is an ongoing project. Please spread the word. Contact the office at 812-855-4252 or email Doug at dbauder@indiana.edu

One honest person can make a huge difference in confronting ignorance and intolerance.

Gay Christmas movie to be filmed in Chicago

CHICAGO - Scrooge & Marley is a modern-day variation on Charles Dickens' classic story of the holidays, A Christmas Carol. Recounted from a gay sensibility, with heart, comedy and music, the magic of Dickens' timeless tale of a man's redemption at the holidays-thanks to the help of three ghostly spirits-comes alive from a fresh perspective that will appeal to audiences of every persuasion.

Scrooge & Marley, an independent film, will be shot in Chicago May 2012. The film is based on an original script by Ellen Stoneking, Richard Knight, Jr. and the late Tim Imse. It will be directed by Knight and Peter Neville.

Several actors are already tentatively signed to the project, including: Megan Cavanagh (A League of Their Own, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Exes and Ohs); Rusty Schwimmer (North Country, Perfect Storm, The Surrogate, Drop Dead Diva, Bones, Louie); Ronnie Kroell (Bravo's Make Me a Super Model, Eating Out-Drama Camp and Into the Lion's Den); and Becca Kaufman, a renowned Chicago-area vocalist.

Auditions for additional roles will be held in March. Casting will be coordinated by Heather Schmucker. For details email casting@scroogeandmarleymovie.com

Executive producers of the film are Tracy Baim (Hannah Free) and David Strzepek (Foodgasm), who are joined by several co-producers (Knight, Neville, Stoneking, Kroell and Etta Worthington) and experienced crew. Line producer is Thavary Krouch. Those interested in joining the crew should email: editor@windycitymediagroup.com.

The film is being financed by investors, and is also launching an Indie GoGo campaign this week, under the name Scrooge & Marley film. They hope to raise $15,000 by April 4, to add to the investor funding. See http://www.indiegogo.com/Scrooge-Marley-film?a=396864.

Legal counsel for the production is Joseph L. Voss from Clark Hill PLC.

The idea for a gay-themed holiday film began to germinate in Knight's mind after seeing out writer-director Thomas Bezucha's 2006 movie The Family Stone. "This was the first movie that I could recall that not only featured gay characters as central to the holiday family traditions celebrated in the film, but also seamlessly integrated them. When it was over I wanted to see an entire movie viewed from our perspective. But there was none to be found."

Years later, when Knight and friend screenwriter Ellen Stoneking (founding member of the Annoyance Theatre) and another friend, Tim Imse, formed a writing trio, he suggested the idea to Stoneking, who was looking for a new subject matter. Further, Dickens' A Christmas Carol seemed a perfect template for the project and Stoneking, following an outline that followed the tale, as seen from a queer vantage point, was off and running. Stoneking and Knight, who were given tangential aid by Imse, quickly discerned that a straight-ahead, heartfelt approach rather than a camp or salacious style was essential to their recasting of the story. Knight's original, haunting holiday ballad "Christmas Eve Is Coming Soon," which will be the musical theme of the picture, was instrumental in helping set the mood for the work.

As Stoneking finished the initial drafts, however, the trio was struck by tragedy: Imse had been diagnosed with a terminal disease from which he succumbed soon after the screenplay was completed. Months later, Stoneking and Knight returned to polish Scrooge & Marley after resolving that the finished film would be dedicated to their fallen creative comrade.

"I think movie fans of all types will love Scrooge & Marley-especially those with a soft spot for good old-fashioned Christmas movies like myself," Knight said. But the completed film will also be the realization of a long-held dream. "At last, there will be a holiday movie that gay people can call their own-something that we can return to year after year."

http://www.scroogeandmarleymovie.com

http://www.indiegogo.com

Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/ScroogeMarleyCH

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ScroogeAndMarley

Sam I Am Movies, LLC
1900 S.
