In honor of Family History Month (October), Glencairn is hosting a family history tour and workshop. Begin the day with a tour of the family symbolism created in stone, wood, and glass mosaic for the castle-like home of Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn in the 1930s. Then bring your own favorite item for “Show and Tell a Treasure of Your Family,” a special workshop led by Judith McDowell, family historian and board member of the Association of Personal Historians. Items could include a family heirloom or a photograph, a family Bible or other book, clothing or even toys—any memorable object you would like to share with the group is welcome.

Medieval Festival 2015

Have you ever heard a minstrel play a hurdy-gurdy, or tried your hand at spinning wool? Travel back to a time when illuminated manuscripts and stained glass windows were made to kindle heavenly inspiration.

Watch as J. Kenneth Leap and his apprentices paint and assemble stained glass windows by hand.

Learn about the art of manuscript illumination, and then see a Gutenberg-style printing press in action.

Enjoy music played on replica period instruments, and join students from Bryn Athyn College on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

Learn about the influence of religion on medieval weaponry and cheer your favored knight in a sword battle.

Try spinning wool, explore the galleries, take our cell phone audio tour, and rejuvenate at our Castle Café. Come in medieval costume and get a prize!

Please note: at this event the elevator stops at the 1^st floor and the Tower only. Please use the stairs while exploring Glencairn Museum’s galleries on all other floors.

No wheelchairs beyond the first floor. No backpack-style baby carriers.

Before 5.1 surround sound, there was stereo. Long before both, however, was the original surround sound: the polychoral innovations of the 1500s. In a lavish program of music by the finest composers of the polychoral style including Victoria, Gabrieli, Byrd and Monteverdi, Les Canards Chantants explores the acoustical architecture of Glencairn Museum's Great Hall, and offers the audience a truly immersive concert experience.

Hailed for their “perfectly balanced voices” (the Soester Anzeiger) and for performances that are “at times reverent, at times playful” (the Bryn Athyn Post), Les Canards Chantants is a solo-voice ensemble committed to progressive and relevant interpretation of renaissance polyphony. The “singing ducks” have performed to high acclaim throughout the UK and Germany, appearing on BBC One and in venues as diverse as York Minster, Soest Cathedral, The National Centre for Early Music, Salters Hall, and Poole’s Cavern. Now based in Philadelphia, Les Canards Chantants are Ensemble in Residence at the Glencairn Museum, and their 2015-2016 season includes concerts at the Cathedral Basilica and the Bowerbird series in Philadelphia, the Five Boroughs Music Festival in New York City, and collaborations with Piffaro, ACRONYM and the Diderot String Quartet.

Come to Glencairn Museum for a special program for home school groups. Great for all ages!

See the World Nativities exhibition showing how Christians around the world have adapted the Nativity scene to represent their national, regional, and local cultures. Participate in two activities: Follow the Star Nativities Seek and Find, and the Christmas in Art Quest. Take the “Christmas in the Castle” tour to see more of the castle and learn about Christmas traditions, including those of Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn, former owners of Glencairn when it was a home. The tour includes the tower, Medieval Christian Christmas art, and Pitcairn family memorabilia. Tours last 45 minutes. Limit 12 people per tour. Reservations for guided tours only required. Join us as the Museum continues a Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn family tradition and hosts the “Glencairn Sing,” a Christmas concert open to the public. The program will feature the “Glencairn Horns,” composed of current and former members of the Philadelphia Orchestra (David Bilger, trumpet; Blair Bollinger, bass trombone; Eric Carlson, trombone; Randy Gardner, horn; Daniel Williams, horn). Readings from the Christmas story and audience caroling will be interspersed throughout the program.

Visit Glencairn Museum for our annual Sacred Arts Festival and experience religious art in the making. Witness demonstrators using ink, glass, paint and music to create beautiful expressions of faith. Learn about stone carving, see the creation of a sand mandala, take a cell phone audio tour inside and outside the building, enjoy the stunning view from Glencairn’s tower and relax in the Castle Café.

Landmarks in Lights 2016

Enjoy quiet reflection as you explore the grounds of the Bryn Athyn Historic District in lights.

Cairnwood Estate: FREE Admission to the Garden House, including exhibitions and an orientation video; self-guided house tours: $5/person.

Bryn Athyn Cathedral: FREE Admission; cell phone audio tour of the building and gardens.

Glencairn Museum: FREE Admission to the first floor, including exhibitions, an orientation video, and a free cell phone audio tour; rides to the Tower fee $5/person.

Free parking throughout the Historic District.

Given the age and construction of the buildings, some areas are not wheelchair accessible. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

No wheelchairs beyond the first floor of Cairnwood and Glencairn. No backpack-style baby carriers.
