Intermediate Football Championship Group 2 Round 1

Glenfarne/Kilty 4-10 Allen Gaels 1-11

They say goals win games and this proved to be the case as Glenfarne/Kilty opened their Intermediate Championship campaign with a hard fought win over Allen Gaels. It was the Glenfarne/Kilty men’s ability to get goals at crucial stages of the game that proved the decisive factor in this closely fought contest. Allen Gaels second string are traditionally strong in this competition and they put a tremondous fighting performance but it was the Glenfarne/Kilty men's ability to seemingly open up the Allen Gaels defence at will that proved to be their downfall.

Glenfarne/Kilty opened the scoring on two minutes with a Michael Maguire free. Allen Gaels however had the perfect response when a well hit shot from Thomas Nolan was saved by Glenfarne/Kilty goalkeeper Daragh Keaney only for the ball to rebound off the unlucky John McManus and into the net. Glenfarne/Kilty responded to this setback two minutes later with a well taken point from Conor O’Rourke. Four minutes later they were in front when Shane McLoughlin brilliantly flicked the ball over the advancing Oisin Dolan and into the net. Straight away Glenfarne/Kilty goaled again through Dermot O’Rourke to put five points between the teams. For the next 10 minutes Glenfarne/Kilty completely dominated the game but could only add a further point to their tally from Shane McLoughlin. On Twenty minutes Patrick McManus pulled a point back for Allen Gaels and this was followed by points on twenty-six and twenty minutes from Donal Herron and Alan McKeon to cut the gap to three points. Just before half-time Michael Maguire pointed a free for Glenfarne/Kilty to leave four points between the teams at the break.

Glenfarne/Kilty started the second-half just as they finished the first with Michael Maguire pointing a free after a foul on Dermot O’Rourke. He followed this up three minutes later with a point from a forty-five. On eight minutes Thomas Nolan point for Allen Gaels and he followed it up three minutes later with another point as the Allen Gaels men enjoyed a period of dominance. On fourteen minutes Paul McGovern pointed from play for the Drumshanbo men and this was followed up a minute later by a point from Pascal Gillard to leave just two between the teams midway through the second half. On sixteen minutes Michael Maguire restored the Glenfarne/Kilty lead with a point from a free. This was quickly followed by a goal by substitute J.J McDermott to leave the Glenfarne/Kilty men six points to the good. Allen Gaels however responded with points from Paul McGovern and Patrick McManus to cut the gap to four points with ten minutes left. On twenty two minutes Fergal Clancy scored from play for Glenfarne/Kilty to increase their lead to five points but Donal Herron responded for Allen Gaels with a point from a free. J.J McDermott then restored Glenfarne’s five point advantage with a well taken point. Glenfarne/Kilty then put the game out of reach with a well worked goal from Joe Keaney on twenty-six minutes. Allen Gaels responded with a point from Thomas Nolan on twenty-eight minutes. Michael Maguire completed the scoring when he pointed in the last minute. With that referee Brian Mallon brought the game to an end.

The North Leitrim men will be happy with getting their campaign off to a winning start and had good performances from the impressive Dermot O’Rourke, Conor O’Rourke, Barry McDermott, Joe Keaney, Fergal Clancy and Shane McLoughlin. For Allen Gaels Michael McManus and Pascal Gillard at midfield, and forwards Alan McKeon, Thomas Nolan, Donal Herron and Patrick McManus were their best performers.

Division 5 League Final

Our Junior team have qualified for the Division 5 league final. This game against Sean O'Heslins will be played this Sunday at 2pm in Pairc Sean MacDiarmuida, Carrick-on-Shannon. We hope to see all our supporters out in big numbers for this game.

U-16 County Team

Well done to Niall Clancy who has been playing for the Leitrim U-16 team during the Fr. Manning Cup and Teb Webb Cup. Niall has lined out at right half forward in all the games so far.

Minor Championship

Our Minor team take on Kiltrubid on Friday evening in the second round of the Minor Championship. This game will take place in Kiltrubid at 7pm.

U-16 Training

U-16 training re-commences on this Wednesday evening in the park at 8pm. All players are asked to be in attendance. The championship is due to start on September 1st.

Our Junior team had their second victory of the year when they defeated Bornacoola on Sunday afternoon last in Bornacoola on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-3. Our minor team has a home game in their League competition at 7.00pm on this Wednesday evening against Kiltrubid in Glenfarne.

Our U-16 team recorded their second win in the 9-a-side league competition on Friday evening last when they beat Aughnasheelin in Aughnasheelin. They play their final group game on this Friday evening in Glenfarne at 7pm when they take on Eslin. This is an important game which could decide qualification for the final of this competition so please come out and support the lads.

Ladies Football

Glenfarne Ladies
Glenfarne Ladies made their first appearance for many years in the Leitrim Ladies Football league when they took on Fenagh in Division Three on Sunday morning last. On this occasion the girls were beaten by Fenagh. It is great to see a Ladies team back wearing the Black and White. Best wishes to the girls and their manager Sean Clancy for the rest of the season.

Leitrim Minors
Well done to Fergal Clancy who is currently representing the club on the Leitrim Minor team. Fergal has played in the last two Connacht Minor League games which included an impressive win over a very good Mayo team. We wish Fergal and his colleagues on the Minor panel all the best for the coming year.

Sympathy
On Sunday morning last the Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher area was saddened to hear of the death of Seamus McDermott. Seamus was an active member of Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher GAA club and served the club both on the playing field and in numerous administrative positions over the years. Seamus devoted a lot of his time to underage football in Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher and this work, carried out with a great determination and commitment is now evident in the club's current crop of senior players. Seamus also served the club as Senior Team Manager and as a selector on many occasions. Seamus also served as club chairman on a number of occasions over the years with his last term coming to an end in January of 2004. He was also an ever-present spectator at all Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher’s matches both Senior and Junior where he took great joy in watching his four sons wear the Black and White with distinction. Seamus was an avid Leitrim supporter and rarely missed a match when his beloved county was in action. Seamus will be sadly missed by all of us who knew him and had the pleasure of working with him over the years. Gaelic Football and Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher GAA club has lost one of its finest servants. To his wife Bridie, daughter Denise and sons, David, Paul, Barry and J.J we express our deepest sympathy. May he rest in peace.

Dinner Dance
All roads led to Ballyshannon on Saturday night 28^th January for the clubs annual dinner dance. A crowd of over 120 was in attendance for what turned out to be a great night. The club’s annual awards were presented on the night with the winners as follows: Senior Player of the Year: Thomas McDermott, Junior Player of the Year: Sean McManus, Young Player of the Year: Conor O’Rourke. The club person of the year award went to treasurer, Dermot O’Rourke. The trophies for these awards were sponsored by D & S Concrete Ltd. Also a number of presentations were made to couples who got married since our last dinner dance. These gifts were sponsored by Philomena Burns. We also numerous spot prizes on the night. The sponsors of these included, Cllr. Michael Colreavy, Keenan’s Spar and Bridgestone. A big thank you to the management and staff of Dorian’s Hotel, Ballyshannon for the great service provided on the night. Also to John Farry and D.J Danny Feehily who provided the entertainment on the night. A big thank you also to our bus driver Vincey McGovern and his wife Ann who ensured everyone made it home safe and sound after a great night.

Annual Draw
Our Annual Draw took place at the afore mentioned Dinner Dance. The prize winners were as follows: €1000 Michael Mitchell, €500 Sgt Gallagher, Kiltyclogher, €500 Joan Kelly, Mullawn, €100 John Sheerin, Kiltyclogher, €100 Margaret Keaney, Kiltyclogher, €100 Denis Keown, c/o Ketty’s Bar. A big thank you to our sponsors of the draw: Felix McHugh, Pat Slevin, Gerry O’Hagan, Leitrim Overnight, Ketty’s Bar and Noel Gilgunn. Without the help of these people the draw would not have been the success it was. Thank you to all our supporters who once again showed great generosity in buying tickets. Also a big thank you to former players and club members no longer living in the area who sold and returned books of tickets.

Peter Canavan Visit
One of the greatest Gaelic Footballers of all time was in Glenfarne on Friday night last to present medals to a number of our successful underage teams. Peter Canavan presented medals to the 2005 U-16 9-a-side Championship winners, to the 2004 U-16 9-a-side League winners and to the 2004 U-14 9-a-side League winners. A great night was had by all who attended the function with the question and answers session at the beginning with Peter proving to be very popular with young and old alike. Thank you to everyone who helped organize the night especially those who had the Rainbow looking very well and to those who prepared the refreshments.

Dinner Dance
All roads lead to Dorian’s Hotel, Ballyshannon on Saturday night next, 28^th January 2006 for our Annual Dinner Dance. Tickets are available from all club officials and are priced at €25 per person. Dinner will be served at 8pm sharp. Music on the night will be provided by John Farry followed by a disco. A great night is promised and we hope to see a big crowd in attendance on the night.

Medal Presentation/Peter Canavan Visit
Tyrone Star Peter Canavan will visit the area on Friday January 20^th to present medals to our successful underage teams of 2005. The function will take place in the Rainbow Centre, Glenfarne. The event will kick off at 8pm. All are welcome to attend.

Dinner Dance
Our Annual Dinner Dance will be held on January 28^th in Dorians Hotel, Ballyshannon. Tickets are available from all club officals and are priced at €25 per person. We hope to see a big crowd on the night to help celebrate the progress made in 2005 and to kick off 2006.

Membership
Club membership is now available. It costs €20 for family membership (Two Adults and two non-playing children), €15 for standard adult membership, €5 for student membership and €2 for all underage players. Membership forms can be obtained from Padraig McGourty @ 086-8106431. All players are reminded that in order to be eligible to play they must be fully paid up members. Closing date for obtaining membership is 31^st March.

Medal Presentation/Peter Canavan Visit
Tyrone Star Peter Canavan will visit the area on Friday January 20th to present medals to our successful underage teams of 2005. The function will take place in the Rainbow Centre. The time of the event will be confirmed next week. All are welcome to attend.

Our AGM was held on Friday 30th December 2005 and the following officers were elected - Chairman: Sean Clancy, Vice-Chairperson: Maura McGourty, Secretary: Francis White, Assistant Secretary/PRO: Padraig McGourty, Treasurer: Dermot O’Rourke.

U-16
Congratulations to our U-16 Team who have qualified for the 9 a-side Championship Final. The game is fixed for this Friday at 6pm in Drumshanbo against Annaduff. We wish the team and their manager Dermot O’Rourke all the best in the final and hope to see a large contingent of supporters at the game.

Senior League
We played our first game of the Division 2 Shield on Sunday last against Cloone in Glenfarne. After a hard fought encounter we were defeated on a score-line of 2-7 to 0-12. Our next game in this competition is away to Ballinaglera this weekend. Please check fixtures in this paper for further details. Thanks to Ketty’s Bar, Glenfarne for supplying refreshments after the match.

Congratulations
Congratulations to two great supporters of our club, Douglas Stephenson and Mary McManus who got married recently. We wish the happy couple many years of happiness together. Also congratulations to former player Paul Cullen and his girlfriend Sarah Roberts who got engaged a number of weeks ago.

Sympathy
The club would like to extend sympathy to the Dolan Family, Cornmore on the recent death of Mary Ann. May she rest in peace.

Club Meeting
There will be a club meeting in Ketty’s Bar, Glenfarne at 9.30pm on Thursday 6th October. All members are expected to attend.

Race Night
