Mr Goldsmith and I are currently in China at our partner school. Over the past couple of days we have been observing lessons, teaching lessons ourselves in maths and PE and I attended the Grade 1 & 2 extra curricula clubs.

In Zibo they hold competitions for each subject area to find the best teacher of that subject in the district. On site over the past 2 days we have been observing physics, tomorrow at another school is the English competition. Today, in preparation of the English competition I was asked to star as the main role in a video! The teacher has been given 3 days to prepare for the competition and even cancelled her honeymoon to ensure she was here to represent Huantai School!

Have a look at some of the many photos we have taken so far of our trip:

We would like to invite parents and carers of tutees in the Performing Arts forms to a Meet and Greet evening on Wednesday 25 September from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

This will give them a chance to meet the form tutors and to discover what the plans are for the performing arts form groups over the next year.

The girls in the forms have already been working hard to prepare and present an inspirational assembly to each year group at Glenmoor and they will be presenting this to Winton pupils before half term. There will also be a chance for parents and carers to see their work at the meet and greet evening.

For my MSc in Mathematics Education I have been researching the use of questioning in mathematics and, with the support of the mathematics department, have devised a taxonomy (adapted from Bloom and other researchers) specific to our subject to help us classify the types of mathematical thinking intended by our questions and whether the response expected from students is a surface response or requires deeper thinking. Following data collection this half term through lesson observations, teacher interviews and student questionnaires, I am looking forward to analysing the results this summer and drawing conclusions about how we can make improvements in this area.

This year in ICT lessons I have been trialling an idea Mrs Hesketh suggested in a Teaching and Learning briefing. Using an exercise book in each lesson a pupil in responsible for moving around the room noting down positive learning that they see taking place. This could include groups working well together, individuals advancing independently and skills being put into practise. The book is referred to at the end of the lesson as a reflection of what has been seen. This helps pupils understand what learning is happening from a different perspective and is a record for future planning. I plan to embed into all lessons next year.

Cover the table with A1 paper and ask them to construct a mind map on a particular topic – we were doing ozone layer and pollution. Students then rotate around the room and add information to each others work. Really engaging and the pupils loved showing off how much more they knew than another group.
