We all have them. You have them. I have them. They limit us and we don’t even realize it. We can not rid ourselves of them, they are as much a part of our human nature as our need to sleep. We can mitigate their limiting effects, but we must first realize their presence and influence.

One cognitive bias to beware of is the Dunning–Kruger effect, because we who suffer from it don’t know we do; and each of us suffers from it.

The cornerstone of the Dunning-Kruger effect is the reality that “unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their/our ability much higher than average.”

No matter how smart we each are in certain fields, there are always other fields where we just can’t recognize our own incompetence in — because we don’t have the expertise and perspective of someone truly competent in this other field.

Thus, anyone seeking to push their limits must maintain a beginner’s mind. If we are to learn from our mistakes, we mustn’t feel we don’t make any.

The road to true competence is marked with as much humility as passion.
