Actuaries are evolving their skill sets to a burgeoning market.

The story of the insurance-linked securities market is one of rebirth.

The story begins in the mid-1990s, when reinsurers and primary insurers were struggling to find new capital to safeguard themselves from the financial risk associated with major catastrophes. The insurance world feared that when the 1-in-100-year Miami Hurricane or the major Tokyo earthquake happened, the market would not be able to abide. Insurers and reinsurers took it upon themselves to look for new sources of capacity.

Once again, actuary was named No. 1 best job in America. Some in the profession are leveraging that accolade to move into new and exciting roles.

The actuarial profession is suffering from good press. It seems as if every few weeks a news outlet proclaims that actuaries have the best jobs in the United States.

So what does that mean? Surging interest among those looking to enter the profession, increased exposure to industries previously ignorant of the skills that actuaries bring to the table, and, it is to be hoped, expanding opportunities in those industries in which actuaries haven’t traditionally been employed.
