A Nepali journalist, attempting to set a new world for the longest television talk show of 60 hours. He began his television broadcast by interviewing UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Puspha Kamal Dahal on Thursday.

Rabi Lamichane started the “Lord Buddha was born in Nepal” programme on News24, a national television channel, at 10:34am and expects to end it on April 13 to create a new Guinness world record on the longest talk show.

According to the Guinness World Records, the longest talk show is staged by Pavlo Kuzheyev and Tetiana Danylenko for a 52-hour broadcast to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence in 2011.

HOST OF THE SHOW :- RABI LAMICHANE

according to the Guinness World Records rules, Lamichane will get a break of five minutes after an hour long talk show. Chiranjibi Devkota, news chief of News24, however, said he has decided to talk for 30 continuous hours and take a break of 150 minutes. The rule also has it that Lamichane can interview guests for 45 minutes, while the public hearing will be for five minutes.

Lamichane is also likely to talk with Nepali people living abroad through Skype. The rule also requires at least 10 live viewers during the entire show. The programme is being organised by News24 and Welcome Event Management.

Effects of Global Warming on Business

At some point there is a transition from trying to avoid the collision to bracing for the impact.

That could be an excerpt from a driver’s education manual. Then again, it could be the outlook for the business climate given the now inevitable changes and effects of global warming.

According to the world’s largest professional services firm, Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC), “Now one thing is clear: businesses, governments and communities across the world need to plan for a warming world – not just 2C, but 4C or even 6C.”

Their warning comes as the result of an assessment of the global community’s inability to make the needed reductions in carbon emissions to avoid the greatest effects of global warming. PwC’s latest report claims that a reduction in carbon intensity of 5.1 percent per year is needed if we are to meet the target of limiting temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius. However, last year, despite the economic slowdown, we saw a reduction of only 0.7 percent, which has been typical of every year since the turn of the century.

“We have passed a critical threshold,” says the report.

Earlier this week, Admiral Samuel Locklear, told the Boston Globe that global warming, “is probably the most likely thing that is going to happen . . . that will cripple the security environment, probably more likely than the other scenarios we all often talk about.”

Even if we were somehow able to double our rate of de-carbonization, we would still be on track to hit a 6 degree increase by the end of the century. The only chance we have to hold temperatures to 2 degrees, would be to come up with a six-fold reduction in carbon emissions, which may be possible eventually, but it’s not going to happen anytime soon.

So, given this cheery prologue, what are the challenges and opportunities that businesses should be preparing for as we look forward to a destabilizing climate thanks to the effects of global warming?

1. Uncertainty

Without a doubt, the number one impact on business will continue to be uncertainty. Businesses will need to become far more agile and far more strategic, with contingency plans in place that must look bravely into the upcoming crisis without blinking and relegating as little as possible to the realm of the unthinkable.

According to Malcolm Preston, PwC’s global lead on sustainability and climate change, “Even with progress year-on-year in emissions reduction, the reality is that the level of corporate reduction is nowhere near what is required. The new normal for businesses is a period of high uncertainty, subdued growth and volatile commodity prices. If regulatory certainty doesn’t come soon, businesses’ ability to plan and act – particularly around energy, supply chain and risk – could be anything but ‘normal.’”

Of course, uncertainty and risk are two sides of the same coin. According to John Steinbruner, Professor at the University of Maryland and Chair of the Committee on International Security Studies of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, speaking at the World Affairs Council Summit on Climate Change last week (video), “The consequence of climate are certainly going to be very large. We know that without any uncertainty whatsoever. But unfortunately, the character, magnitude and timing and location of those consequences cannot be predicted with sufficient confidence to really tell us what to do about it.”

If we hit the 6 degree Celsius increase we are now on track to meet by 2100, even if we double our current rate of carbon reduction, according to Mark Lynas, author of the book Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet, southern Europe, north Africa the Middle East, and the American Midwest will be uninhabitable due to excessive heat and drought. At the same time, inundated coastal cities will need to be evacuated. Roughly one-tenth of the world’s population live in low-lying coastal areas. Admiral Locklear spoke of entire nations being displaced by the rising sea level. All of these climate refugees will need some place to go. It’s likely that there will be some negative feedback effect as we pass 2 degrees at mid-century, as the latest Shell scenario report predicts. This will hopefully lead to substantially enhanced efforts to deal with the problem, once impacts have become truly undeniable, which could steer us more towards a 4-degree increase, if it’s not already too late by then.

All of this dislocation will put a tremendous strain on all kinds of services unless action is taken in advance that anticipates the challenges. Robust and resilient systems need to be put in place that can withstand the weather impacts while building in enough capacity to serve all of those who will be in need. Given the increasing severity of these impacts, and in some cases, you might say, finally, governments around the world will have no choice but to issue increasingly stringent regulations in an attempt to manage continuing emissions, as well as any scarcities of food and water and other services that might be occurring, while at the same time maintaining security. These regulations will undoubtedly add to the unhappiness of a great many people. It will certainly strain our leaders’ ability to lead, far beyond anything that is being seen today.

Rather than end on such a gloomy note, I would add that there are a few positive impacts that might be expected as well. These include:

This will not only provide more time for outdoor recreation, but more importantly, given the increasing population, a longer growing season. This could well prove to be critical in meeting the demands of feeding all these people.

The melting of ice has increased the size of 20 thousand glacial lakes in the Himalayas. The rise in water levels endangers the lives of thousands of people.

Due to the melting of Himalayan glaciers, glacial lakes are threatening to overflow. The rise in sea levels threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The most dangerous is Imja Lake (Everest region), which every year increases its perimeter by 47 meters. According to a study by the Nepalese Ministry of Water Resources and experts from the University of Hokkaido (Japan), the phenomenon affects most of the 20 thousand glacial lakes of the Himalayas.

In the Everest region, there are some 1600 glacial lakes. The Imja was formed in the 60s and did not exist when Edmund Hillary conquered Everest in 1953. Each year, the ice melts and the surface of the lake increases by 47 meters. The basin located at 5,100 meters above sea level is about 2.5 km long, 600 meters wide and more than 90 meters deep in some places.

According to experts, the lake has now reached its capacity limit. Over the next five years, the weight of the water could break through the walls of glacial debris, causing a wave of mud, ice and rock for over 100 km. Homes, fields and roads would be submerged by a layer of rubble as high as 15 meters. Teija Watanabe, Hokkaido University geologist, has studied the lake since 1990. He points out that in recent years the Imja has visibly increased and its flooding is only a matter of time.

For months, the Mountain Institute in Kathmandu has been working with a group of researchers from the University of Lima (Peru) to control the lake and create an artificial barrier to contain the mass of water, allowing the use of hydraulic pumps for drainage. In these years, the Peruvians have developed sophisticated systems for the containment of water and have drained 30 glacier basins. In 1940, the overflowing of a lake in the Cordillera Blanca (Central Andes) killed more than 10 thousand people.

Conflict is the meat of great storytelling. You might prefer such tropes as man-versus-nature or man-versus-blue-aliens, but the best geological drama often unfolds when tectonic plates duke it out, especially continental plates. Experienced cave divers can explore depths of more than 148 feet (45 meters) by swimming into the Silfra cave system.

Visitors frequently describe the Silfra diving experience as one of floating weightlessly through space. The glacial waters filter through miles of volcanic rock before emptying into the crack.

8. Fog-shrouded Peaks

You'll find no shortage of breathtaking vistas on the Greek peninsula, but the Meteora rock formations truly take the cake. These massive sandstone fingers seem to emerge as much from a dream as from the plains of Thessaly. Towering as high as 2,044 feet (623 meters) above lush landscape below, the steep peaks of Meteora are a perfect setting for a secluded monastery.

Monks and nuns have called Meteora's peaks and caverns home for centuries. Hermits scaled the daunting peaks as early as the 10th century and, according to legend, St. Athanasios Meteorites rode an eagle to the top in the 1300s to found Great Meteoron, the largest of the region's six secluded monasteries.

The monasteries remain active to this day, though some peaks remain rather isolated destinations. Up until 1925, visitors could only reach Ayia Triada (aka Hagia Triada) monastery via rope ladders and baskets. Today, it boasts a 140-step staircase hewn into the rock.

7. The Reflecting Desert

Earth's vast, barren expanses are often as awe-inspiring as its highest peaks and deepest valleys. Just consider the Bolivian Uyuni Salt Flats, or Salar de Uyuni, a 4,000-square-mile (10,360-square-kilometer) plane of what appear to be hexagonal tiles. This extraordinary high-altitude landscape stretches among the snow-peaked Andean mountains, and if you happen to visit during the rainy season, you're in for quite a sight.

When the rains sweep down onto the Uyuni Salt Flats, the entire expanse becomes an immense reflecting pool. The water on the salt flats never reaches a depth of more than 6 inches (15 centimeters), so it offers visitors the unique sensation of walking on the surface of a mirror -- all amid a desolate silence.

The unique landmark is actually the remnant of a prehistoric lake and currently ranks as the largest salt flat in the world.

6. The Crystal Caverns

Nearly 1,000 feet (305 meters) beneath Mexico's Naica silver mine you'll find a chamber of unearthly wonder. Here in Cueva de los Cristales (the Cave of Crystals), 36-foot (11-meter) obelisks of solid crystal lay heaped about like fallen pillars in a dilapidated temple.

This subterranean forest of wonders boasts the largest known gypsums (soft minerals made of hydrate calcium sulfate) on Earth. For roughly half a million years, the hidden chamber was nothing short of a crystal incubator. For starters, nearby magma deposits heat the cavern to temperatures of up to 112 degrees Fahrenheit (44 degrees Celsius). And to top things off, the entire space was flooded with mineral-rich waters up until very recently.

The chamber was discovered in 2000, after mining operations pumped it dry. Today, only a few visitors risk heatstroke to witness the crystals' beauty firsthand.

Madagascar is truly a lost world. Cut off from the rest of the world, the island's lemur population thrived (they don't exist anywhere else on the planet, except in captivity), and a host of unique life forms evolved in relative isolation. Yet Madagascar's geology also stands apart from the rest of the world's -- especially the region known as Tsingy de Bemaraha.

Here, visitors encounter a forest of upturned limestone daggers. This painful-looking landscape, also known as karst topography, results from long-term dissolution of soluble limestone bedrock. Formerly a massive slab of rock, rainwater has whittled it down into multiple, individual towers of stone. The Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park protects a 600-square-mile (1,554-square-kilometers) region of stone and vegetation.

The inhospitable nature of the tisngy serves to protect a host of creatures, many of which avoided discovery by humans until the 21st century.
