I come from a very quiet place, and I like [...]

I come from a very quiet place, and I like these calm landscapes, driving on a empty road, being far from everything, but strangely, I feel good living in a crowed place (for now). The picture I took is the view from my window. I like the feeling of being one little person part of something, of a bigthing. I like to look at my window and see all these people living, kind of meta-life. It makes me thinking a lot about the movie “Rear Window” from Alfred Hitchcock, that I really appreciate.

Name: Elodie Daguin

Place you live: Paris, France

Place your photo was taken: From my balcony, in Paris.

Can you sum up Paris? I’ve lived in Paris for 5 years, this is not my native country, I come from countryside, Burgoundy more exactly, but I like to be a city dweller, especially in the capital city. Paris is truly a great city, historic and modern in the same time. It’s like there are several cities in the same place, all different. But I only know a little bit of this city.

Occupation: Freelance Photographer and Graphic Designer

Preoccupation: Keep doing it.

What is a perfect day in Paris? Sunday, wake up late, have a great lunch, read the newspaper, meet friends, watch movies, no planning.

If someone was visiting, what must they do? It depend of what they like, obviously restaurants, maybe some exhibitions, some streets…

A perfect meal in Paris? Pesto pasta

What is the best thing about your spot? The gardens I guess

What is the worst? Subway, Monday 9 AM.

A little known fact about where you live? When I was travelling, I use to hear that french people were rude and dirty. Don’t know why.

Where is your favorite place in the world? I have so much to discover, I like New York, Grenade, Istanbul, Paris and some new places to come.

Who are your three favorite photographers? Not favorite, but I admire the work of Alec Soth, the portraiture of Richard Avedon, and recently Dorothée Smith, Jody Rogac…

It helps to have decent balance and a strong grip [...]

It helps to have decent balance and a strong grip when riding the bus in San Francisco – the frequent stops, the hills, the shopping bags in tight spaces. This particular Friday morning the bus was near empty, but during rush-hour, it’s typical standing room only.

For a few years, I would pass this mural (by Chor Boogie) on my morning commute to work at a law firm on the 22nd floor of a high rise in the Financial District. The eyes, heavy, hypnotic, nearly sleep-deprived, seemed to reflect my own at 7:30am. The street mural reminded me of the “Eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckelberg,” a motif in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.” In the novel, a worn-out billboard featured a set of eyes which seemed to “judge” the characters and their actions. Ironically, as the mural’s eyes gazed back at me each morning, I found myself staring out onto Market Street, peering at the lives of people on the sidewalk: feet sticking outside a cardboard box on the pavement, a business man slapping the side of the moving bus in a rush to catch it. It’s when I see the eyes that I reach in my bag to take out my camera.

Name: James de Leon

Place you live: San Francisco, California, USA

Place your photo was taken: Market Street, San Francisco

Occupation: Paralegal

Preoccupation: Observation and creation

If someone was visiting, what must they do? Golden Gate Park. Land’s End. Mission District. Chinatown.

A perfect meal in San Francisco? Indian food: Chicken tika masala and potato naan at Shalimar between, Jones and O’Farrell, in the Tenderloin District.

What is the best thing about your spot? Diversity. Inexpensive food options abound. You can get almost anywhere in the City on a bicycle. Tourist, CEO, frat guy, struggling artist or all of the above, there’s a bar here for any ambiguously thirsty so-and-so.

What is the worst? I haven’t quite figured out how the seasons work here. Bicycle theft is prevalent. It’s not necessarily the absurd ramblings of the disheveled smellys permeating the air of urine that seem to disturb me, but the fact that they begin to blend-in with the urban scenery.

A little known fact about where you live? Most of Golden Gate Park pre-1870s was an expanse of sand dunes. It was there that Skywalker moisturizer farm was built and hermit, Obi-Wan Kenobi had resided a long time ago. (One of those statements was untrue).

Who are your three of your favorite photographers? I’ll give you 3 of my favorite Bay Area photographers: Todd Hido, Michael Jang, Ted Pushinsky

When people think of New York, most think it is [...]

When people think of New York, most think it is all one big city. It’s rare that people know anything other than the city, let alone what people call “upstate NY”. But there is much more than the city, the Adirondack’s is filled with beautiful mountains and forests. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Name: Valerie Manne

Place you live: Adirondacks, New York

Place your photo was taken: Cascade Summit

Can you sum up the Adirondacks? Plenty of small towns scattered around mountains. So hiking, camping, backpacking, any sort of exploring is the thing to do.

Occupation: Student

Preoccupation: Photography, traveling, hiking, etc.

A perfect day in spot? Planning a day hike, ending with a night around a campfire.

If someone was visiting, what must they do? Explore.

A perfect meal? I would have to say stop at Steak & Seafood in Lake Placid and order the prime rib. It will not let you down.

What is the best thing about your spot? It is not as crowded as other parks.

What is the worst? Living here, you’re pretty far from any large city.

A little known fact about where you live? “The Adirondack Park spans 6.1 million acres and is larger than the state of Massachusetts. In fact, several National Parks could fit inside the Blue Line (the line on a map that designates the outline of the park), including Glacier, Yosemite, the Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon.”

Where is your favorite place in the world? This is a tough one. I would really like to plan a trip to Europe, but so far Yosemite always seems to come to mind.

Who are your three favorite photographers? It varies with what inspires me at the time. Lately I’ve been enjoying Kevin Russ‘ photos though.

Because of the depth and clarity of Crater Lake, the water absorbs all the colors of the spectrum except for blue.
Place your photo was taken: Sauvie Island, Oregon

Can you sum up Portland? Portland is a city with small town vibes. We are always running into the same people, who frequent the same places, who soon become friends. Wide open space is never far away- forests, the sea, rivers, or mountains.

Occupation: Photographer and Producer

Preoccupation: Momma

A perfect day in Portland? A summer day, waking up and having toast with jam and coffee on our back deck. Leaving home midday with a picnic and heading to Sauvie Island to set up camp for the rest of the day. We swim, pick blackberries, have a nap, and just enjoy the afternoon until the sun sets and we return home.

Bondi Beach, my favourite place in Sydney. Only 14km from the city centre, a city beach like none other. It’s my sanctuary, my place to get away from it all. My place to recoup, rest and be creative. It’s also my canvas.

Name: Eva Trust

Place you live: Sydney, Australia

Place your photo was taken: Bondi Beach

Can you sum up Sydney? It a big beautiful city with everything one could possibly want out of a large metropolis. It has loads of amazing beaches along the coast close to the CBD, coastal walks, parks with rain forest. The mountains are close for hikes and only a 4 hour drive to the ski fields in the winter. Every suburb has a different feel. Most are very village like and self contained with cafes, shops, restaurants ad services. It never gets boring in Sydney.

Occupation: Photographer/Artist

Preoccupation: Beach Reflections

A perfect day in Sydney? A sunny day with temps in the high 20′s (C)

If someone was visiting, what must they do? Go on the harbour and cost walks.

A perfect meal? Fish and chips at the wharf in Watsons Bay while watching ferries come in and sail boats cruise by.

What is the best thing about your spot? It feels easy.

What is the worst? Christmas and New Years Day. There are too many people on those days to enjoy it.

A little known fact about where you live? The area used to be swamp, wetlands, scrub bush lands and sand dunes before white people arrived.

Where is your favorite place in the world? Apart from Bondi Beach, my favorite spots are tropical beaches anywhere.

These four images are from my Leith in Black and [...]

These four images are from my Leith in Black and Red series which I started for my first Yodel.

The first image is a drawing of the window display of A&A Traders at the top of the street I live on, Easter Road. The shop has been there for ever. It’s hand-painted signage announces it as a purveyor of Household, Toiletries, Fancy Goods and Electrical. The second drawing is a detail of the exterior of a Turkish fast food take away. I love the tiled facade and stylized typography of this shop.

The last two drawings are of views from adjoining streets, Edina Place and Albert Street. On Edina Place I’ve drawn the A Crolla and Sons building. The Crolla family are well known in Edinburgh for owning a variety of Italian delis and eateries, most notably the famous Valvona and Crolla deli on Elm Row (where I worked for six months as a teenager). Lastly on Albert Street I fell in love with the hand-painted sign for the local butchers.

Name: Tommy Perman

Place you live: Leith, Edinburgh

Place your postcards are designed for? Leith, Edinburgh

Can you sum up Edinburgh? I live in Leith a large district in the north east of Edinburgh. As far as I’m concerned, Leith is a vibrant, multicultural area with loads of great places to eat, drink, shop and hang out.

Occupation: Artist

Preoccupation: The city

A perfect day in Edinburgh? I’ve recently become a dad so my perfect (and at the moment hypothetically perfect) day would involve waking up after a full night’s sleep, drink coffee and listen to the radio while playing with my son Patrick. I’d then go for a walk with Patrick and his mum, my beautiful girlfriend Helen. I’d take some photos then we’d go get something to eat in Nobles bar (Constitution Street) and I might indulge in a light ale. If someone was visiting, what must they do? Visitors to Edinburgh should explore Leith’s many fine restaurants and bars. They should also go and shop in my friend’s shops: Analogue Books an art, design, illustration, and photography bookstore, Focus Skate Shop, Red Door Gallery for affordable art and craft.

A perfect meal in Edinburgh? I said it before in my last Yodel but Stack Dim Sum on Dalmeny Street serve the best dim sum I’ve tasted (and I’ve recently come back from an extensive tour of China!)

What is the best thing about the place you live? The views

And the worst? The weather

Who are your three favorite designers/illustrators? Toby Paterson, Geoff McFetridge, Euan Duncan

I made this photo while walking across the Brooklyn Bridge recently. Walking across it has been on my list of things to do forever. Previously I had only driven over it and been on a boat under it. The two-mile walk back and forth goes by so quickly, and easily, because you become so preoccupied with everything around you.

Name: Angela Datre

Place you live: Long Island, New York

Place your photo was taken: Brooklyn Bridge

Can you sum up the place you live in a short paragraph? I live on the south shore of Nassau County on Long Island. I’m about ten minutes from the beach and thirty minutes from New York City and the convenience of having both of those places so close makes living here totally worth it.

Occupation: Photographer

Preoccupation: Music

What is a perfect day in New York? Going on a photo adventure to a spot I’ve never been to before.

If someone was visiting, what must they do? Walk the streets of Manhattan on a nice day and check out all the different neighborhoods.

What is the best thing about your spot? There are great views. It’s something you have to do at least once.

What is the worst? It can get very crowded.

Who are your three favorite photographers? It’s hard to narrow it down to just three! Lately I have been into the work of Mark Steinmetz, Joel Meyerowitz, and Jason Nocito.
