Preemies!
Glory Reborn has had an exciting month of hands on learning how to take care of premature babies. With the public hospital closed due to flooding and the expenses of a private hospital stay for many weeks beyond our reach, Glory Reborn, together with our amazingly kind pediatrician embarked on learning how to care for wee-little ones. It seems that most events of maternity care come in pairs or triplets and so this proved true with our two babies. In less than 24 hours from each other a little baby boy, David and a little baby girl, Eliza Molly, were delivered, both under 4.5 pounds. They stayed under a make-shift warmer all bundled up when they werenʼt cuddled up on their mommyʼs tummy. Both eventually
graduated from oxygen use and from the warmer to the phototherapy lights as they continued on their medications, and fluids . Over the course of the three weeks that they were in the clinic we had tough moments, lots of prayer, and the joy of seeing them grow stronger and healthier with each day. We were honored to be able to take care of these precious two in a way that the public hospital could not provide. We are ever so thankful for your generous support that supplied these two precious lives with the resources that they needed to be alive today. Both families are living under the poverty line and even if the public hospital had been open to serve them, they would not have been able to provide their babies with the medications and payments for treatment that was required. This truly is the heart behind Glory Reborn: to help those who deserve a chance to live despite the situation they may be in. These two mommies would continually cry tears of thanks for helping their babies, for caring for their babies when others would not look twice. Our one mommy was so touched that David would even take the time to talk to them and check in on their baby that she named her little guy David. What an honor. We certainly could not have provided for these infants without your partnership, so please know that your contributions directly saved two very precious lives that will be part of our Glory Reborn family forever! While we were excited when the day came for baby Eliza to go home first (followed a week later by baby David) it was sad to see them leave as we and our staff had truly adopted them into our hearts and lives. Of course they have already been regular visitors back to the clinic for check ups and love and hugs.

Youth
We were also happy to have many visitors join us in Cebu…33 to be exact. I was honored to have my cousin and her friend work as nurses in the clinic for two months. They worked many hours, days and nights, and were such helpful hands to have around during a very busy month of delivering babies. We also had a midwifery student come finish up her needed experience of catching babies. Last but certainly not the least, the Youth With a Mission group, Kingʼs Kids El Paso came to the Philippines for an outreach and spent two weeks with us here in Cebu.

As many of you know it was our own travels to the Philippines with Kingʼs Kids that played a large role in us ending up here today. We were happy to have thirty of them sleeping on our floors to serve in the communities we work with in Cebu. From tribal villages or unreached people groups, to the thousands of families who live in the city dumpsites, to ministering to our pregnant mothers at Glory Reborn, it was two weeks of reaching out to the families of Cebu and imparting a heart of ministry and service to the youth who came. It was a wonderful time for everyone and we are so thankful for these visitors!

Next month Glory Reborn will have three German midwives partnering with us in the clinic as two of our own staff will be adding babies to their own families! We are so excited for these new little ones and for the timely help. If you are an experienced labor & delivery nurse and would like to volunteer please send us an email: info@gloryreborn.org. We gladly welcome experienced help!
In other exciting news Glory Reborn has continued to partner with local private hospitals and laboratories in Cebu City. We have now connected our clinic with three private laboratories as well as a private hospital that allows our patients to have any laboratory test done at extremely low and sometimes no cost!
It has certainly taken a solid commitment to the community, but with your faithfulness and our focus on providing the highest quality care, we have been able to find local partners who understand what we are doing, and agree to help our patients. We are thankful that our clinic has built a positive reputation in the city and is able to continue to make relationships and partnerships to further enhance womenʼs health care in Cebu. We would like to thank each of you for your partnership that has allowed Glory Reborn to remain faithful in our monthly obligations and build good rapport with the hospitals and laboratories we work with. Thank you, and please continue to help us make a difference in the lives of these women!

Budget Update
As July recently ended, we have passed the half-way point of our annual budget! Thank you so much for your continued faithfulness to support Glory Reborn. We need your help to finish the year strong and meet our annual budget of $135,000.

While this may seem daunting, consider this: On average, we have 40 individual donors a month, who average $100/month contribution. This faithful base in addition to our fundraising events supports our operation! If you could partner with us monthly and double our donor base we would raise twice as much!
No amount is too small, as every dollar goes a long way. Many of our existing supporters make a huge difference in our mommiesʼ lives in small faithful contributions. Whether it is $20 or $100, it can make a difference!
If you already support us, know that your financial support and prayer are making a difference. Thank you and consider spreading the word. If you arenʼt supporting us currently, then we hope you will consider doing so.

Life is in the Blood

Glory Reborn embarked on an exciting journey in May. We had our very first blood drive at our clinic. We partnered with the Philippine National Red Cross to help collect life saving blood. After many weeks of preparing we had four local churches represented at the blood drive and many relatives of patients enrolled in the Glory Reborn pregnancy program. Together we were able to collect 36 bags of healthy blood. We should note that more than 60 donors came to the event however many of us women were turned down due to anemia…but we tried! This event was particularly important as each month Glory Reborn has patients in need of cesarean section deliveries. Prior to undergoing surgery a minimum of
one bag of blood must be secured and at the hospital ready to be used if the need arises. By partnering with Red Cross, Glory Reborn is stocking blood that can be used for patients who would need a cesarean delivery. We look forward to continuing to partner with the local Red Cross in the future and are happy that our first blood drive at Glory Reborn was a success!

We were able to secure the first bag of blood for a first time mother who was in labor this week. Johna came to the clinic in early labor on a Friday morning. During an initial check of she and the baby it was discovered that the babyʼs heart beat had some episodes of decelerations below the normal range. As we tried to manage and continued to monitor there was not significant enough improvement of the babyʼs heart beat so we took her to the hospital where Glory Rebornʼs OB-GYN met us and ordered a cesarean section. Upon delivery it was noted that the baby boy, Kyle, had his umbilical cord pinched up against the motherʼs womb and an abnormality with his lungs proved to be quite serious. Currently baby Kyle is on a ventilator and being cared for by Glory Rebornʼs Pediatrician. We are believing that Kyle can continue to grow stronger and overcome the congenital defect. Glory Reborn would like to continue to keep Kyle under the care of our pediatrician at a private facility but would like to ask for your continued prayers. We are so thankful for having found doctors that are willing to help us save the lives of babies and mommies that otherwise would have to deliver their infants at home, perhaps in a dumpsite or in a graveyard. We are thankful	for each and every little life and for the opportunity that we have, together, to bring a hope and future to them. For some itʼs through extended medical care for others its holding their hand through loss and being a shoulder to cry on, and for the moments that we share in the joy of a long awaited little miracle. We canʼt say thank you enough to each of you for being the support system to thousands of Filipino families, mommies and babies like Johna and Kyle who have found hope and help in a time of trouble. Just as Jesus has found us and brought us an eternal hope what a wonderful thing to share in a small way a practical hope to oh so many precious lives.

See a video highlight of the Life is in the Blood Event:

May is Expansion Month

We are so thankful to expand our services this month and help screen for anomalies like Kyleʼs on a routine basis at Glory Reborn. Due to your faithful donations Glory Reborn was	able to purchase an additional probe for our ultrasound machine. This will allow us to more accurately assess the expected due dates and scan for anomalies for each and every one of our mommies.

May was also an exciting month for me as I was able to help a dear friend deliver her fourth baby. Having been apart of her last two deliveries I was happy to have made it back to Cebu just a few hours before she delivered another precious baby boy! Itʼs always wonderful when we have patients come back and deliver with us multiple times. I canʼt believe that the babies I helped deliver for her are already 9, 6, and one month old. My how time flies. I am so thankful to be able to be a part of such a very special moment in so many precious familyʼs lives.

Fundraising

As you know we had a recent fundraising trip to the US, and it was extremely successful. We were able to raise $19,261.65 through all of your generosity! This allowed us to purchase some much needed equipment as well as raise a good portion of our annual budget. This combined with the donations we have received up to May 1, 2010 totals to over $50,000! We are on track to meet our annual budget. We cannot express how appreciative we are for this support and we are excited about the opportunities that 2010 will bring.
As we mentioned in our past newsletters as well as our presentation, one of the key areas is growth into a new facility. We will be sharing more on this as well as creating a separate campaign for it. Many of you mentioned this topic while we were in the US, and we are so excited about the interest. We are looking for not only funding, but for individuals or groups that would partner with us in planning, designing, and overseeing the project. If you or someone you know would want more information on how to be apart of this campaign, please email us and we will keep you updated. We will also continue to update you on this campaign via our regular newsletter.

Glory Reborn Online

Many of you know about our website and maybe even some of you know that you can receive your newsletter via email, but did you know that you could also partner with Glory Reborn online via Twitter and Facebook?

While Facebook has some security issues that they are working on, it has been an amazing success for Glory Reborn. Through the Causes application, we have not only raised awareness about our Cause, but we have also raised over $10,000 in 2009! We are developing and working on updates to include on Facebook and Twitter and encourage you to partner with us on these platforms and share Glory Reborn with your friends!

At Glory Reborn, we see a majority of patients who have no other options during their pregnancy. Some come to us happy and jubilant, others come to us in tears and in dire situations. We are here to provide them with tangible healthcare that they can rely on, and for the majority of our patients, we try to give them at least a glimmer of hope before they leave.

We do however have limitations on the care that we can give and therefore we are caught in the reality of the developing world. In an ideal world, these women would have access to high-quality, affordable healthcare when they need procedures that we cannot provide. In this real world, they can only afford to be treated at the public hospital, which provides the best they can, however it is sub-par care. On a daily basis, we often have to deal with these situations and make decisions that involve the lives of our patients in the frustrating gray area between ideals and reality. We had one such situation this week.

A mom name Johna came to us during her pregnancy and was happy to be at Glory Reborn, however during her labor this past Friday we learned that the baby’s heartbeat showed decelerations below the normal range. This was manageable if there would be an improvement. However after close monitoring at the clinic there was not an improvement, so she needed to be transported. Hilary was with her and she called me and said, “David, we have this situation, what should we do?”. Which basically meant that we had to make a decision from the gray area, do we just let the hardship of reality take affect and have a negative outcome. Or do we intervene and hope that the patient as well as our charity program could cover the cost. Quite literally this mom’s and baby’s lives were in our hands, and a decision had to be made. We decided to go with our ideals and had the patient admitted to the private hospital. The family said they would try to pay and our doctor would not charge us, and we have a memorandum of understanding with the hospital in which all of our patients will get a discount.

Johna had a cesarian section and she was stable. However, after birth, the doctors noticed some problems with baby Kyle. He was quickly rushed intothe NICU, and his life was being supported by a ventilator. After an extensive workup he was diagnosed with a congenital pulmonary abnormality that was life threatening. Tragically, in spite of the best care that the doctors and hospital could provide, Kyle passed away Saturday night. Sometimes, even when we chose ideals, the reality still overwhelms the situation.

We share this story with you to give you a little glimpse into the situation that we face daily at Glory Reborn, but also a real glimpse the situation of Johna and a chance to respond. She has been through quite a bit, and our social worker and counselors are visiting her daily. She and her parents have raised as much money as they can, and we would like to ask for you help with this situation. After all the discounts and pro bono work from our doctor, due to Kyle’s complications the total due is nearly $2,500.00 We would like to share this financial burden with our patient, and would like to see if you would partner with us and with Johna in this very real and practical way.

Year Six Comes to a Close. Over 1,750 healthy babies.

This has been a devastating month for the Philippines and a very busy month for Glory Reborn. As we celebrated our 6th year clinic anniversary with 1750 deliveries it couldnt have been more perfect that my patient Alona delivered her baby boy as we celebrated. Alona was the first patient I ever helped to deliver back in 2000. Her oldest daughter is 9 years old! I cant believe how time flies. I also had the joy of delivering her second daughter in 2004 and now as we celebrated six years of existence as Glory Reborn I had the privilege of delivering her baby boy!

The timing couldnt have been more wonderful as I reminisced over all the infants we have delivered and all the mothers we have gotten to know, Alona certainly stands out in my mind. The closing of this sixth year also brought about the hiring of two new social workers. We are very excited about continuing to reach the women who are desperate for medical attention in Cebu City. So it was with great excitement, and two additional staff members, that we welcomed year number seven for Glory Reborn and praised Jesus for His faithfulness over the past six wonderful years. We want to thank each of you for being a part of saving many, many precious lives and we look forward to all that year seven will bring….perhaps a new building?!?

Floods

As many of you probably know September was a devastating month for the northern islands of the Philippines with two typhoons flooding most of the capitol city and its surrounding areas. Glory Reborn was eager to help the victims of this devastation and together with our local church collected over 400 boxes of clothing and supplies. We were proud to be the first crate of supplies to be sent out of Cebu to reach our neighbors in Manila. As we saw the Asia-Pacific region be devastated by the the flooding in Manila, the earthquake in Indonesia and the tsunami in the Samoan Islands we are thankful for the safety that we have here in Cebu and the protection of a God who truly sees each and every one of us.

Building & Property

As many of you know, we have been looking for land to expand the clinic facility. This past month we have had some exciting appointments and have actually seen an amazing piece of land, that has some amazing potential. It is very near to the current clinic and in the area where we have been looking. We are still in the initial stages of this project, and will be meeting the owners to discuss the potential further. We did want to let you know about this, because its never too early to give towards the building and property fund. The proceeds from the Holiday Card fundraiser will also go directly to the Building fund.
We also have a wonderful opportunity in November to have a fundraising event here in Cebu City. We are very excited about the event and are looking forward to partnering with additional local professionals, corporations, and organizations to further our project.

Financial Update

Promote Healthy Pregnancy & Childbirth is in America’s Giving Challenge – Let’s win $50,000!

Hi everyone,

Our cause just entered in America’s Giving Challenge, which gives us a chance to win $50,000!

Please donate today: Glory Reborn – Causes

To win, between now and November 7th we have to get the most donations to our cause (every person can donate once per day and have it count as a unique donation). We can also win daily awards of $1,000 and $500 if we can get the most people to donate in any 24-hour period. The great thing about this Challenge is that it doesn’t matter how much you give, but instead how much you do to encourage friends and family to get involved in our cause. We all need to come together and start promoting the cause if we want to win.

Each of us has tons of friends on Facebook who we can ask to donate to our cause. But let’s think big toocan you put our cause in your email signature, can you throw a party and get people to donate through the cause when they enter, can you organize other people to go out and fundraise from all of their friends? As you reach out to your friends be sure to tell them why this cause matters to you. The possibilities are endless so let’s talk about what we can do to win on the Wall of the cause or by replying to this bulletin.

I think we can do it! But it’s going to take all of us. Check out the Giving Challenge ( www.causes.com ), then visit our cause to see how we’re doing so far and get involved.

Donate right now by going to Glory Reborn – Causes
