Discovery, Coca-Cola, IFC/Sundance Channel, PepsiCo, Smirnoff </c>

With the advent of DVR and on-demand technology, advertising commercials are becoming a thing of the past. When consumers favorite button is fast-forward, its no longer about spending huge ad budgets on clever commercials to grab their attention – well not unless they can be aired during the Super Bowl. The focus is now about the production of unscripted/factual brand-funded entertainment, but the industry is struggling to create a perfect formula for success. A number of pioneers in this field shared their successes and failures at realscreen’s Branded Entertainment Forum in New York late last month. With a full-day schedule, the world’s biggest television networks, consumer brands and production companies converged to figure out how make this budding industry work.

Branded Content Takes on The World

“Branded Entertainment is now world-made,” explains Mike Wiese, director of branded content & entertainment at JWT. Last year, JWT assisted Smirnoff to create their Nightlife Exchange Project, a global branded entertainment program that involved Facebook promotions, live events in 14 cities around the world, and successful partnerships with MTV and Madonna. Michelle Klein, Smirnoff’s VP of global marketing, communication and digital, sited a 60% increase in web traffic and over 100,000 entries into Madonna’s search for the world’s best dancer as a result of the campaign, and said it will soon grow to 50 cities around the globe.

Seeing the possibilities for branded entertainment as the answer to the fast-forward button problem, ad agencies and consumer brands are now looking for culturally relevant content for global distribution. However, not everyone has Smirnoff’s resources, so how can others be successful? Frank Cooper II, PepsiCo’s CEO of global consumer engagement, advises that whatever you do, “it has to add value to consumers.” Tony Weisman, president of Digitas’ Chicago-Boston-Detroit region, said the key is “knowing what’s happening now to keep it relevant” and “to start in a small country to prove the concept.”

Several companies sited partnerships as their recipe for success. “The best way to get into the game is to partner,” said Colby Caines, founder of Back Roads Entertainment, a creative content production company. And partner is exactly what Discovery’s Senior VP Jocelyn Egan did to present the ambitious multi-year, multi-platform Curiosity series. As a presenting partner, Intel received broad exposure through the series’ first 16 episodes and educational website curiosity.com. As a result of its success, Discovery has produced 60 one-hour episodes.

In 2002, 10 seasons ago, CAA Marketing brought together Coca-Cola and American Idol for what has developed into one of the most successful and enduring branded entertainment partnerships of all time. Jed Selkowitz, director of entertainment marketing for The Coca-Cola Company’s North American division, and Ned McNeilage, creative director of CAA Marketing / Creative Artists Agency, were on hand to explain how the right partnerships and integrated marketing efforts can pay off in a big way. “When everything is integrated and works together, they (campaigns) are far more powerful, ” explains McNeilage.

Do We Need Broadcasting Networks Anymore?”

With YouTube now firmly ensconced as an entertainment destination and moving further into original content creation along with other online portals such as Hulu and Yahoo, realScreen editors think it’s a safe bet that more producers and brands will make forays into digital episodic content. So what is the future of network TV?

The consensus at the Forum was that network TV and digital channels of distribution serve different purposes and are both powerful and relevant. Peter Naylor, NBC/Universal’s EVP of digital media sales, gave a presentation about how television is no longer a passive experience, and factual entertainment, as seen with various live competition shows over the years, is perfectly poised to take advantage of the new possibilities afforded by social TV. NBC’s smash singing competition The Voice leveraged social TV to create on of the most talked about – and watched – hits of the past year.

What Works and Why? The Measurement Question

realscreen sited a recent survey conducted by the U.S. Association of National Advertisers that stated while close to two-thirds of client-side marketers say they aim to use branded entertainment campaigns in 2012, 65% of respondents also said they were unsatisfied with the quality of research available to measure its effectiveness. And 37% of companies that don’t use branded entertainment campaigns citied lack of measurable results as the key reason.

Christie Kawada, PH.D., The Nielson Company’s SVP of strategic marketing science, and Evan Shapiro, President of IFC tv and Sundance Channel described new measurement techniques they are working on, including Messaging Innovation Metric (MIM). They described various measurement factors including “relevance”, “engagement” (strength of emotion), “exposure”, “transference” and “need states.” The Nielson Company is currently working with its clients to develop these and other measurement tools.

Some companies have clear measurement tools in place. Robert Friedman, president of @Radical.Media, worked with Amex on its Unstaged program and said they measured its success by the cost per member acquired during the campaign. Others sited web traffic results and online consumer engagement through social media as a factor they evaluate.

Belfast’s Filmtrip & San Fransisco’s Glow Marketing are now working together.

But if we told you any more than that we’d have to bundle you into a dark windowed saloon and take you to an empty warehouse somewhere down by the docks, where Big Dave would keep an eye on you, in between episodes of Jerry-Springer-A-Like TV and Pot Noodles.

Suffice to say, we have been brainstorming opportunities and ideas around emotional response entertainment, so we’ve got our eye on a few ideas, and since the force is strong good things will come of this.

So watch this space!!

SAN FRANCISCO (Hollywood Today) 5/18/11 -- Being in the music industry requires constant networking and education, but no one has the time or resources to go to everything. Picking our shows wisely, we attended two conferences, ASCAP “I Create Music” Expo (April 28-30 in Hollywood) and SF MusicTech Summit (May 9 in San Francisco).

These shows are great for staying up on trends and technologies that support the entire music process, from music creation and distribution to marketing and touring. ASCAP Expo covers the first step in the process: music creation. SF MusicTech Summit takes the ball from there and provides a meeting place to discuss the evolving music/business/technology ecosystem in a proactive, conducive to deal-making environment.

Participating in industry events connects you to your community in a more powerful way than what is available online. The sharing that happens at these shows is concentrated and can give you an edge up in today’s knowledge economy.

ASCAP “I Create Music” Expo

The ASCAP Expo is open to everyone but is focused around songwriters, composers and producers. It provides three days of education and networking with leaders in the industry. This year, celebrity speakers included Lindsey Buckingham, Pharrell, Fergie, Dr. Luke, Ingrid Michaelson and representatives from the biggest music companies in the industry.

“As far as songwriting, dig deep and be rigorously honest with yourself,” states Fergie. “I mean, people can see through things and they can see when you’re not being truthful to yourself. So don’t be afraid. Its therapy.”

“I think the most important thing for me is that whomever I am working with that we all agree that the best idea wins,” states Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, Grammy-nominated songwriter, record producer and remixer.

A number of clever technology companies demonstrated their gear and do-it-yourself (DIY) services. The full list is on the ASCAP Expo website, but here some highlights:

Especially impressive was Gobbler, a new provider of a cloud-based service for backing up, sending and organizing recording projects and assets. Download Gobbler’s free trial version at http://www.gobbler.com.

Also representing were Glow Marketing clients PMC Speakers (http://www.pmcspeakers.com); Prism Sound (http://www.prismsound.com); producer/composer Dean Gant of Sir Gant & The Invisible Force (http://www.sirgant.com); three-time Grammy-winner Dave Isaac of MixSensei.com and producer/songwriter Joe Solo.

Nimbit.com represented with their direct-to-fan sales and marketing platform for do-it-yourself artists. Meeting the people behind the technology is always invaluable.

“We chose ASCAP Expo because of our long time relationship with them,” explains Patrick Faucher, Nimbit’s founder. “Its one of the best events of the year in terms of a really solid conference, with great information, great panels, great content.”

The Songwriter Studio coordinated by Sara Griggs Media showcased five companies who make music tools for musicians. The studio comprises every part of the audio and control signal path needed for complete music production. Focusrite and Line 6 audio interfaces connect to a computer running Propellerhead's Record/Reason music software controlled by Novation Midi controller keyboards and monitored by KRK Systems headphones and speakers. These products offer musicians high grade sound and usability at reasonable prices.

"The buzz and excitement at this year's EXPO was tremendous with attendees, panelists and exhibitors sharing in the positive vibe,” states Ellen Miller, ASCAP Expo representative. “Having worked with the EXPO for the past 5 years, it's great to witness the growth and industry impact first hand."

For those of you who missed the show, consider purchasing an Online EXPO Panel Video Access Passcode for $149 to view the panels for yourself at http://www.ascap.com/eventsawards/events/expo/.

SF MusicTech Summit

Although “SF” is in this event’s title, it is now attended by industry pros from all over including notable artists and representatives of the hottest companies in the music business. It started as a local San Francisco event and now people travel from all over to put technology center stage.

“We have a lot more control over things in house with the tools of the emerging technologies, states Mike Einzinger, guitarist of Incubus. “A lot more things are available to us to use to our advantage that we just didn’t have control over before. Now we do.”

This Summit’s topics included “Music in the Cloud” featuring mSpot, Rhapsody, and Billboard; Investment and M&A with venture capital companies, Getty Images and Bloomberg/Businessweek; “Blackplane Single Sign on” with Universal Music Group and others; “Artist Revenue Streams”; “Live Music Marketing”; “State of Music Apps”; “Discover & Recommendation” with MOG, Slacker, The Filter, Tune Up, Rovi and IODA; “Tools for your Band” with Rootmusic, Atom Digital, The Orchard, YouTube, Thinglink and Mashable; “How to Scale” with SongKick, SoundCloud, Twitter and Pandora.

A full list of attendees is viewable on their site along videos and photos that are worth checking out if you were not able to attend. The reason this event has grown in popularity is because there are structured opportunities for elevator pitches and demos; bleeding-edge panels about industry issues and technology solutions; and a packed reception where introducing yourself to just about anyone in the room is received with a warm smile.

Show producers Brian and Shoshana Zisk always do a fantastic job and have managed to maintain an intimate event experience that is relatively free of the typical music industry pretenses. Hopefully, it will stay that way.

NAB Show Report, Las Vegas, Nevada
Except from HollywoodToday.net as written by Chandra Lynn/Glow Marketing

Every year technology vendors make their way across the Nevada dessert to the glimmering mirage that is Las Vegas. They come to show their wares to the gear-lusting throngs. My trek, however, wasn’t in search of new gadgets, it was to stay connected and on top of trends as an industry marketing consultant.

Historically, I’d spend hours on the show floor going booth-to-booth to make contacts and see what’s new. This year I had a totally different experience that included power lunches ala Shark Tank as the sole female at the table; exclusive cocktail parties with executives of some of the biggest exhibitors; client dinners that resulted in signed contracts and checks written at the table; and late night parties hosted by those that still have budgets to produce private events in excess of $100 per person.

Spending time with NAB mucky-mucks turned out to be an excellent strategy for getting insider views on trends in technology and high-level messaging from guest filmmakers James Cameron and Kevin Smith.

Some of the areas that seemed to be trending at this years show were technology solutions that reduce 3D production costs and enable 3D television production; the democratization of film making tools as they become better and cheaper; and the immediacy of delivering content via the internet through portable streaming technology. The last two were made evident by the prevalence of people shooting everywhere with DSLRs attached to various camera rigs and accessories, and shooters deploying mobile streaming technology from their heavy backpacks.
Upon completion, she will receive a certificate in Strategic Intervention Coaching and Marraige Education. This education will greatly benefit Glow's clients in the areas of business relationships, planning, resolving conflicts, systematic thinking, handling crisis, and business mastery. Her emphasis will be on working with celebrities and business leaders.

"Robbins-Madanes Training is the closest you can get to studying to be a coach with Tony personally. There isn't another coach training that offers footage of live facilitation, not to mention with the genius of Tony Robbins. If you are looking to study the highly effective form of Strategic Intervention and Marriage Education, then RMT is for you." Steven Twohig Sr., Owner, Pacing Outcomes.

McMillan's renewed digital debut sings with original music and custom graphics reflecting her dynamic personality.

"I’m THRILLED with my website,” Terry McMillan says, “I want to thank Glow and their team so much for helping to capture, and thus represent my “vision”, personality and what I care about in such a creative, classy, cool, and hip manner. It rocks, and I’m looking forward to watching the site grow. I can’t thank them enough, especially for their patience. It’s nice to know that there are people out there who can deliver on their promises. Chandra and Glow have a great future, and I hope more people are willing to trust them with their vision, even if they aren’t sure what it is."

To make sure McMillan received first-class, turn-key services, Glow teamed with some of the same talent behind client Tyra Banks’ website, tyra.com. Glow Marketing Principal Chandra Lynn directed the engineering and creative teams: Web Producer Trey Sabatelli of Big Grin Media, Web Developer Norbert Hubert of TwoPointO, Graphic Artist Patrick Boyer of urbancowboy.net and Content Manager Kriz Bell.

“Terry has a huge fan base and now I understand why she attracts so many people,” explains Glow Owner Chandra Lynn. “She has a magnetic, vibrant personality that makes working with her fun and creative. It’s been an honor to work with her, and now I’m an even bigger fan than when I first read Waiting to Exhale.”

A site reflecting Terry's signature sense of style posed unique challenges for the Glow team. The build relied heavily on the creative process. The overall goal was to develop web pages that stretch beyond simple information containers: each represents a different room, full of tools that dig deeper into Terry’s personal and professional world, and the world that she wants to create with her family of fans. The new look takes Terry from her analog origins of print media, distinguishing her as a resource with powerful digital footprint, including her social networking voices twitter.com/msterrymcmillan and Facebook.com/msterrymcmillan .

“Every time my team works on a new website, I am more impressed with our teamwork and accomplishments. The feedback on Terry’s website has been stellar, and it’s because of their hard work. We are becoming known for going above and beyond, exceeding our client’s high expectations. I love it!”
Solomon's music is wonderful, weirdly both soothing and stimulating! And I'm thrilled that I made it into your crib, before the upper arms started their late Fifties decline!! Bravo!"
"I love, LOVE, LOVE the website! It’s like being at a museum of artistic tributes to Terry McMillan (do we have a place like that yet? Maybe we should?). I especially love the sidebar on the right with the catch phrases of your various titles. It’s just a phenomenal design, I’m so excited that it’s launched! Congrats!"
Well there is a lot to know about their creator, #1 Bestseller Terry McMillan, including that Getting To Happy, the sequel to Waiting to Exhale, will be available on September 7 through Viking/Penguin. Now, you can enter her new world at www.terrymcmillan.com for more details.

"Terry wanted to completely reinvent her website, and asked us to transform it into a warm and welcoming 'home' for her readers to hang out," states Chandra Lynn, Glow Marketing's principal and project manager for terrymcmillan.com.

Chandra engaged the same team she worked with on tyra.com to create Terry's site from scratch, including web producer Trey Sabatelli of Big Grin Media; designer/illustrator Patrick Boyer of Unwanted Cowboy; and Norbert Horvath of TwoPointO Inc..

Having worked with Terry for years, writer Kriz Bell developed content for the site and worked closely with Terry to make sure her voice resonated throughout the site.

Keep an eye out for Terry as Getting To Happy sweeps the world. You'll soon see her in O magazine, Entertainment Weekly, and USA Today soon. Check out the site and see if her book tour will be coming to a city near you!
