Once upon a time, in his less diabetic days, The Glucoholic became quite fond of Arizona flavored teas. This was no easy accomplishment for Arizona. Mind you, The Glucoholic was reared in the south where we all know that tea must be brewed boiling hot in a large pot and enriched with a bucket of sugar before being poured over eager ice cubes just waiting to cool it down. The crackling sound is the most heavenly sound of summer. You can imagine being confronted with a “tea” that comes in a bottle or can, that has something other than lemon added, and that survives warm climates for weeks and months on end. This can’t be tea can it? Thankfully, Arizona teas turned out to be quite tasty, and were a greatly missed treat for The Glucoholic - until now.

Arizona Diet Peach Tea is fantastic! Splenda helps to boost the sweetness of this black tea blend. The addition of peach juice is pleasing, and does not drown out the tea’s flavor. The sweetness is perfect, and does not leave you feeling like you just swallowed a tablespoon of corn syrup like some other beverages do. This gem is going on the list of staple sugar free drinks around here! We highly recommend giving Arizona Diet Peach Tea a try.

We’ve got an exciting new low carb snack to tell you about today - Russell Stover Net Carb Chocolate Covered Almonds. We’ve really been looking forward to trying some of the Net Carb line of products from Russell Stover, and it was definitely worth the wait. The candies are delicious. For those who are chocolate covered peanut fans you will immediately notice two things about these candies. Firstly, they have a very pleasant soft texture in your hand and in your mouth. Some chocolate covered nuts have a very hard and rough feel and these chocolate covered almonds do not suffer from this. Secondly, the almonds are a slightly different, but tasty, option for introducing something very healthy into a candy. The chocolate covering has a subdued dark chocolate flavor, and the almonds are fresh and crisp without being too hard.

Each serving consists of about 15 pieces of candy, though during the review we never felt the urge to eat nearly that many. There are 220 calories per serving, along with 18 grams of fat. Thankfully, none of the fats are trans fats, but there are 5 grams of saturated fat. You’ll also get around 5mg of cholesterol and 25mg of sodium per serving. Each serving contains contains about 7 grams of digestible carbohydrate and 6 grams of protein. The packaging provides a list of food allergy warnings that those with food allergies should be aware of. These chocolate covered almonds are sweetened with Splenda and a healthy dose of sugar alcohols, so limit consumption to the recommended serving size or less.

You’ve probably gathered by now that we’re frequent shoppers at Target here at glucoholic.com. Periodically we’ll take a look at the in-house Archer Farms brand products to see if there are any new sugar free options available. While picking up some of our favorite sugar free beverage, we came across Archer Farms Diet Orange Cream Soda. A quick look at the nutrition label and we were on our way to the checkout line, and to a very pleasant experience.

Archer Farms Diet Orange Cream Soda really brings it. Some cream sodas have a texture and taste that evoke thoughts of drinking olive oil. This sugar free drink does not suffer from this problem. The cream flavor is a very good match to the refreshing orange taste and yields an aftertaste almost like candy. This drink is not overly carbonated either, which adds to its thick, rich taste. We give this drink two thumbs up!

The hit parade from the South Beach Diet rolls on. We were delighted to review the South Beach Living Chocolate Mint Snack Bar Delights and were really impressed with their taste. When you buy a product with “chocolate mint” in its name you have certain expectations before you even open the package. The first bite of these snack bars allays any fear that you might have fallen victim to marketing hype. These bars have great chocolate taste and the mint is really strong. Add to that a crunchy filling and you’ve got a very pleasant snacking experience that leaves you satisfied. We’re happy to recommend the South Beach Living Chocolate Mint Snack Bars to anyone following a low carb diet.

Serving size is one 28 gram bar. Each serving contains 100 calories, 4 grams of fat, and about 8 grams of digestible carbohydrate. A serving also includes 150mg of sodium, 55 mg of potassium, and 6 grams of protein. You’ll also get between ten and twenty percent of the recommended daily intake of several important vitamins and minerals. Although not a completely sugar free snack, these bars are a great low carb option.

We’ve learned to expect great things from this brand, and this low carb drink is no exception. This beverage is loaded with teeth tingling tartness that snaps you to attention, then leaves you with that satisfied feeling like a glass of ice cold water on a hot summer day. Don’t be surprised if you see your neighbor’s kids selling this on the sidewalk - for a premium. If you’re not into really tart drinks, this is not the drink for you. But, if you love fresh squeezed lime juice with just the right amount of sweetness then pick some up, make sure it’s super chilled, and enjoy it while relaxing and thinking of tropical places.

The serving size for Minute Maid Light Limonada-Limeade is 8 ounces. With that you will get only 15 calories and only 15mg of sodium. Each serving also contains only 4 grams of carbohydrate. The real bonus in drinking this low carb drink is that each 8 ounce serving contains 100 percent of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C! Perusing the list of ingredients we were surprised to see that one of the sweeteners is aspartame, and it immediately dawned on us that this type of low carb drink is the perfect application of aspartame. The tart lime flavor totally overpowers any possible bitter taste. Two thumbs up!

Murray Sugar Free Fudge Dipped Vanilla Wafers have to be one of the tastiest sugar free snacks we’ve reviewed to date. As we’ll see, this comes with a price. Each wafer is about 2.75 inches long and 0.75 inches square, and weighs about 7.75 grams. Not huge by any stretch of the imagination, and given the extraordinary taste, quite a temptation to overindulge in! These sugar free snacks are simple and elegant at the same time. The combination of a crisp, sweet vanilla wafer and a rich, heavy chocolate fudge shell make these a tasty snack or dessert. Just resist the urge to make them a meal!

The cost we spoke of earlier is the amount of saturated fat in each serving - 7 grams! Weighing in at 150 calories doesn’t lighten the load any either, literally or figuratively. Did we mention how great these things taste? Each serving gets you 10 grams of fat, 20mg of sodium, and about 11 grams of digestible carbohydrate. Murray Sugar Free Fudge Dipped Vanilla Wafers are sweetened with acesulfame potassium, Splenda, and 9 grams of sugar alcohol, so definitely do not consume more than the recommended serving size. These sugar free snacks are excellent for an occasional treat, but probably not a good staple snack.

Flavored waters are beginning to take up more and more shelf space at our supermarkets. Many of the latest offerings are carb and sugar free, and this is great for diabetics and dieters alike. As competition increases in this market we will see better and better products. A good example of this improved quality is Dasani’s latest addition to its Plus line of products, Dasani Plus Lemon Lime Flavored Water. We had the opportunity to try Dasani Plus Lemon Lime this week and were really impressed with its powerful flavor. Some of its competitors just seem to be underpowered in the flavor department, leaving you with the feeling that you should have saved the premium and gotten a cup of water for free. The premium is worth the investment with Dasani Plus Lemon Lime. Sweetness and fruit flavor dominate the taste, and the aftertaste can best be described as tangy. We can’t wait to try the other flavors.

Each serving contains 35mg of sodium and practically nothing else. Ten percent of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, and Magnesium are also included in every serving. Dasani Plus Lemon Lime Flavored Water is sweetened with acesulfame potassium and sucralose.

Our friends over at candyaddict.com have a rundown of the original Jolly Rancher flavors. We were pleased to see that the four flavors of the sugar free version were not a great departure from the five of the original Jolly Ranchers. The sugar free version loses a cherry flavor and replaces blue raspberry with plain raspberry. Each of the four tasted wonderful and sweet. Sugar Free Jolly Ranchers are definitely going on The Glucoholic’s preferred sugar free snacks list, and we highly recommend it.

Continuing our short break from sugar free snacks reviews, we’d like to introduce Tava Zero Calorie Sparkling Beverage. The folks at Pepsi have created three interesting flavors that we immediately marched into battle against each other; with you, our loyal readers, coming out the victors.

Tava Zero Calorie Sparkling Beverage has received some recent press because of Pepsi’s decision to market the product in a non-conventional way to a non-conventional soft drink demographic. Hubspot’s Inbound Internet Marketing Blog and The New York Times explain how Pepsi’s advertising consultants helped them craft a plan to market the product using new media instead of traditional outlets. The 35 to 49 year olds in the product’s target demographic are currently underserved by new media and might just prove to be a real win for Pepsi.

I tell you, The Glucoholic has been waiting for this one. Since our earlier review of Jones Sugar Free Black Cherry Soda we’ve been “jonesing” for the opportunity to try the root beer. It was worth the wait. We could not find one thing we did not like about this root beer. It has very authentic taste, and does not suffer from the pervasive underuse of sweetener that other diet sodas exhibit. If you are a root beer lover you will enjoy this sugar free drink! We highly recommend finding a retailer and purchasing Jones Sugar Free Root Beer and seeing for yourself.

Just like the black cherry soda, there’s very little nutritional information to keep up with. The signature customer-contributed photographs take up more space on the label than the nutrition facts. There’s only 30mg of sodium in this one, and no caffeine. Splenda brand sweetener is used to give it its wonderfully sweet taste. Jones has hit another home run with this one. If they keep this up The Glucoholic will have to buy another refrigerator.
