It seems they’re not available in every store, but we hope that’s just a temporary glitch and we’ll see all these gluten free goodies in all branches of M&S soon.

I recently tried the Orange & Polenta Loaf Cake which is made with – as you may imagine – polenta, orange juice and sweet almonds. The cake was buttery and sweet without being sugary, although I did think it was a tiny bit dry. My Father, who is also a coeliac, disagreed and loved it.

The Orange & Polenta Loaf Cake costs £2.29. Give it a whirl and tell us what you think.

We’re a big fan of salads, here at Gluten Free Towers.

So when we were sent a couple of new gluten free salad dressings to try out, by the nice people over at Righteous, we couldn’t wait to crack them open.

There are three dressings in the range but only two are gluten free: Lemon and mustard seed and raspberry and sweet basil. All the dressings, however, are made with 100% natural ingredients and have none of the additives, preservatives, artificial colourings or gunk usually packed into salad dressings.

So what are they like? Well you can really taste the flavours. The lemon and mustard dressing is totally tangy and kicks like a mule, which means you only need about a teaspoon to brighten up your plate of salad. And that’s probably just as well because a 15ml serving (about 2 and a half teaspoons) is a fairly hefty 68 calories. But it’s all good fat. Because all the dressings are made with rapseed oil, which, according to the press release, is a well-known source of polyunsaturated and monosaturated fats, vitamins D and E, and can help lower cholesterol, improve the immune system and strengthen bones.

The raspberry and sweet basil dressing is fruity, sweet and pretty in pink. Fruit dressings are not my favourite. But this one grew on me and was particularly nice with a goat cheese salad. And at 49 calories a serving it’s a bit lower than the lemon and mustard dressing.

Righteous was started by foodie Gem Misa in January 2010 after years spent trying to find tasty dressings. She began making them on her kitchen table and in just a few months had secured shelf space in some of London’s swankiest stores.

“We want to show people that salad dressings can be natural, healthy and taste great. We only use the best ingredients in our recipes, which means that the flavours really stand out. Unlike other salad dressings we never add water or starch to our products to bulk them out and dilute their flavour.” says Gem Misa.

Righteous salad dressings are so right for the barbecue season. You can buy them from £2.69 a bottle from Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Whole Foods and Partridges.

A while back we wrote a blog post about the gluten free products you could enjoy at McDonald’s. One of the items we mentioned were the fries, which according to the McDonald’s website and forums were definitely gluten free.

However, a couple of our readers left messages in the comments section that they had become ill after eating McDonald’s fries and they had been led to believe that the fries were often cooked with gluten products.

I called McDonald’s UK to ask them if the fries were gluten free; are they ever cooked in the same vat as gluten products; and could there be any risk of cross contamination?

This is their reply:

Our French Fries and Hash Browns are gluten free, as are Fruit Bags, Carrot Sticks and the Garden Side Salad, our core McFlurry ice creams (i.e. not promotional) and our Chocolate and Strawberry Milkshakes, but not Vanilla.

I was sorry to read that one of your blog community members had concerns about cross-contamination of our French Fries. This should certainly not be the case as we make absolutely every possible effort to apply the highest quality measures throughout all procedures. We cook our French Fries in a dedicated vat and prepare them in a dedicated area. Whenever we cook a promotional side order containing gluten, such as Onion Rings, they are cooked in a separate vat some distance away from the Fry station. Gluten free promotional items are cooked in the same way as our French Fries and to the same standards.

Our menu is constantly being reviewed to create the most varied choices available for all customers. We also work closely with the Coeliac Society to provide them with updated information for their members’ booklet, but if your blog community have concerns about the available information please let me know and we can look at how we can better outreach on this issue.

Steve Heywood, Press Officer, McDonald’s UK

So it does seem McDonald’s are on the case when it comes to gluten free products and the care that needs to be taken when preparing them.

The concern, I guess, is that the odd individual restaurant is not adhering to these standards. Have you experienced this at all? Let us know in the comments.

For more information on allergens and the nutritional value of McDonald’s products visit the McDonald’s menu site.

Perfect for summer.

Last weekend we visited the Real Food Market at London’s Southbank Centre.

The market consists of about 40 stalls selling quality, fresh produce and ingredients including cheeses; fresh pastas and sauces; chutneys and pickles; middle eastern delicacies; and artisan breads, cakes and pastries.

We enjoyed a glass of freshly pressed apple juice and a sip (or two) of organic brandy before I went on the hunt for gluten free goodies. And I came across the Arancici Brothers, who make delicious vegetarian and gluten free Arancini risotto balls, which look a bit like falafel, and are packed full of fresh herbs, cheeses, onion, garlic and a hint of citrus.

The guys were serving them hot with a salad, in a chilli or garlic wrap, or just on their own with a little pickle on the side. And let me tell you, they were absolutely delicious. Very tasty. And very filling. Try and get your hands on some of these. They’re perfect for packed lunches and picnics.

We also chatted with the lovely Caroline of Sugargrain who makes gluten free cakes as well as award-winning confectionary such as elderflower marshmallows. Some of her cakes are dairy free, fat free and made without sugar; so there really is something for everyone.

Of course, I had to try a chocolate nut brownie – for research purposes, you understand – and it was definitely one of my favourite chocolate brownies ever (and I’ve eaten lots). It was so moist it was almost creamy, and very chocolatey without being too sweet or sickly. Scrummy.

You can find Sugargrain at these markets and you can also follow Caroline on Twitter @sugargrain.

The Real Food Market at the Southbank takes place on the first weekend of every month. Dates are August 6th – 8th, September 3rd – 5th, November 5th – 7th and December 3rd – 5th. If you’re in the London, and you love food, it’s worth a visit.

Gluten-Free Cooking" href="http://www.gluten-free-blog.com/gluten-free-cooking-phil-vickery/">Phil Vickery’s Seriously Good! Gluten-Free Cooking book. Unfortunately, someone was unable to resist before I’d taken a pic! I couldn’t find honeycomb so I bought Crunchie bars and cut the chocolate off. It seemed to work ok. The mint, sugar and water syrup keeps this cake really moist. For the cake:

200g unsalted butter

200g gluten free dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa solids)

5 medium eggs

Pinch of cream of tartar

240g caster sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

200g ground almonds

50g chickpea (gram) flour

For the syrup:

100g caster sugar

4 tablespoons chopped fresh mint

For the frosting:

500g mascarpone

50g honeycomb, chopped

100g cleat honey

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas mark 4. Line a 24cm round, 7cm deep, loose-bottomed cake tine with baking parchment. Place the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl and melt over a pan of simmering water. Once melted, take the pan off the heat but leave the bowl over the pan to keep the mixture warm.

Place the egg whites and cream of tartar in a bowl and whisk until thick and foamy, the add half the sugar, and whisk again until creamy and thick. Add the rest of the sugar and whisk until very stiff but still a creamy consistency. Stir the egg yolks, vanilla extract, almonds and chickpea flour into the warm chocolate and butter, then straight away add half the meringue, mixing well. Finally, add the rest of the meringue and fold in.

Spoon into the lined tin and bake for 45-50 minutes or until well risen and firm.

Remove from the oven and cool slightly in the tin: it will collapse a little. Make several holes over the surface of the cake with a skewer.

Meanwhile, place the sugar, 100ml water and the mint in a small pan and boil until the sugar has dissolved, then strain. Spoon the syrup over the cake and leave to soak in and cool completely.

Once the cake has cooled, beat the mascarpone, honeycomb and honey together with a wooden spoon or spatula. Do not whisk of the mascarpone will be too soft and hot hold its shape on the cake.

Turn out the cake carefully on to a large, flat plate. As there is no gluten in the cake it will have quite a soft texture, so be careful. Cover the cake with the honey mascarpone. Eat straight away or chill for 1 hour. If you want to keep it for the next day, remove from the fridge 1 hour before eating.

Of course, Innocent are more famous for their smoothies, thickies and juices. But they’ve recently added veg pots to their range – and they’re absolutely delicious.

Which Innocent Veg Pots are gluten free?

There are eight in the range and I tried these two this week: Mexican sweet potato chilli with brown rice, jalapeno peppers and smoke paprika; and Indian daal curry with spicy cauliflower, chickpeas and fresh spinach. The ingredients are all fresh with no colourings, flavourings or nasty E numbers. And these two are gluten free, low in fat and contain three of my daily veg portions.

Not all the pots are gluten free so be sure to check the ingredients before you buy.

You can buy Innocent tasty veg pots at Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose and Asda where they normally retail for about £3.50. But Asda currently have them for 2 for £5 which is a bargain!

Try out a few of the other flavours and let us know what you think.

Dr Sally Beattie of Lazy Day Foods

Dr Sally Beattie who is a director at Lazy Day Foods is a professional food scientist, so she knows a thing or two about delicious food. And as a mum with kids who have allergies she knows a thing or two about food intolerances.

We chatted to Sally for a while and tried quite a few of her products – all in the name of research of course – and we can highly recommend the Millionaire’s Shortbread and the Belgian Dark Chocolate Tiffin. Delicious. And both wheat, gluten, dairy and egg free.

All Lazy Day products are handmade in a dedicated gluten free factory in Scotland and are available to order via the website. They’re so beautifully packaged we think they make ideal gifts.

New items to be added to the range soon include celebration cakes and muffins along with a Rustic Savoury Biscuit range flavoured with cracked pepper, mild spices or sweet chilli. We can’t wait for those.

Stephanie Palmer of Steph's Free From Cakes

Another stand we spent quite a bit of time at was Steph’s Free From Cakes run by the lovely Stephanie Palmer. Steph told us she suffers from a number of food intolerances herself and began baking free from cakes when she couldn’t find anything suitable (or edible) in the shops.

This amazing gluten free Italian restaurant is run by the fabulous Julia and Daniele. And the best bit? The entire menu is gluten free. Yes, there is a ‘regular’ menu for those in your party who want to eat the wheaty stuff. But why would they? The gluten free menu is so packed full of delicious and authentic Italian dishes you can probably convert them for good.

Having visited last Saturday, I can thoroughly recommend the Pizz’Italia pizza with mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, rocket and fresh ricotta. Seriously tasty. My friend had the Finocchiona pizza with mozzarella, tomato, artichokes heart, Italian fennel salami and parmesan. The pizzas are incredibly filling. But we still found room to share a slice of Julia’s chocolate cake. Delicious.

All the gluten free dishes are authentically Italian and prepared in a gluten free kitchen. For opening times and menus visit Bruschetta’s Facebook page (and become a fan!).

We visited the Allergy and Gluten Free Show at Olympia in London this morning. We guessed that Friday morning would be a better time to go than at the weekend but it was getting pretty busy even by the time we left.

There were lots of fantastic products on show and lots and lots of nibbles to try. And of course we had to say hi to our gluten free bread friends, Genius. How could we not after they’d invited us to a fantastic gluten free tea at Claridge’s.

The highlight for me was the product range from Look What We Found. Tasty meals, soups and sauces (I tried the Chilli Con Carne) that can be stored in the cupboard. No need to keep them in the fridge! I have bought a selection of 3 meals and 2 soups so will be doing a complete review of these at a later date.

Also great to see a stand from the guys at Estrella Damm. Their Daura gluten free beer (which tastes great even at 11am!) has won the World Beer Awards ‘World’s Best Gluten Free Beer’ for the last 2 years. And was a Freefrom Food Awards winner in 2010. We wish them luck in retaining their World Beer Awards status in a few months time!

Lastly, I have to mention 9Bar. These delicious mixed seed bars come in a variety of flavours and include hemp. Obviously rebranded from the previous Organic Hemp ‘9 Bar’ and brought right up to date these seed bars really do taste great. For the ‘possible’ reasoning behind the name please refer to the definitions at the Urban Dictionary.

So all in all a fab show and I encourage you to get down there this weekend if at all possible. And expect more posts and reviews on all the products we saw. And tasted!

Do you remember last week we told you we’d been invited to tea at Claridge’s courtesy of Genius gluten free bread? Well, we went on Monday and we have to say it was absolutely delicious.

We enjoyed smoked salmon with horseradish and dill; organic chicken with lemon remoulade; dorrington ham; and cucumber and rocket – all with the crusts cut off, natch. And they were all made with Genius gluten free bread which will now be available as part of Claridge’s afternoon tea. (Just ring in advance and let them know.)

Gluten free cakes and pastries

As if that wasn’t enough we then tucked into gluten free scones served with Devonshire clotted cream and strawberry preserve; fruit tartlets; and to-die-for chocolate ondulay cake. These were all to Lucinda’s recipes although not part of the Genius range (yet!).

Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne Genius Founder

We managed to grab a few words with Genius’s founder, the lovely Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne, who told us the sales of gluten free sandwiches in Starbucks (made with Genius bread) were selling really well. In fact, non-gluten-free-people were buying them without even realising! And she told us about new products in the pipeline, namely brown and white rolls. We can’t wait. Of course, the next step is to roll (no pun intended) Genius gluten free bread out internationally.

On the way out we received gorgeous goodie bags containing a couple of loaves of Genius bread and Lucinda’s fabulous book How to Cook for Food Allergies: Understand Ingredients, Adapt Recipes with Confidence and Cook for an Exciting Allergy-Free Diet.

Not tried Genus gluten free bread yet? It’s now available in all major UK grocery stores.

But aside from the cucumber slices there’s not much we can eat on the menu.

So we’re thrilled to see that the people over at Genius are involved. And as you know we’re huge Genius fans here at The Gluten Free Blog. Genius bread is delicious. So we can’t wait to see what scrummy fillings Claridge’s serves up.

It’s Monday May 10th. So we’ll give you a full report after the event.

You’re out and about and want to grab a bite for lunch. And you’re faced with row after row of ‘off-limits’ sandwiches and rolls.

Well here’s some good news. Starbucks will soon be offering gluten free bread in all its 600 outlets in the UK. And what’s more it’s one of our favourites: Genius.

Genius gluten free bread, you may recall, was launched last year by Edinburgh housewife Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne, who developed the bread for her wheat intolerant eight-year old son.

It’s already available in Tesco, Waitrose, Asda and Sainsbury’s. So we’re pleased Bruce-Gardyne has been signed up to supply Starbucks as well.

It shouldn’t be too long before you can enjoy a gluten free BLT or Club sandwich alongside your Caramel Macchiato or Caffè Americano.
