and Malaysia) and US/Canada (Tampa, Vancouver)

Would be great if scorlerships are available.

I'm trying to be as realistic as possible as I enter the application process. I know that my GMAT scores are not very good and most US two programs would not be giving a value for it, though I will seek to leverage my experience with HSBC and working in cross cultural environment as much as possible . Please share your thoughts on the same.

Thanks in advance.
Restocking fees

Many online retailers charge “restocking fees” on returns if the purchase price is refunded back to the customer's credit card, but charge no such fees if given as store credit.

a. if the purchase price is refunded back to the customer's credit card, but charge no such fees if given as

b. for purchases that are refunded to the customer's credit card, but not when those purchases are refunded as

c. when the purchase is refunded back to the customer's credit card, but not given in the form of

d. if the purchase price is refunded to the customer's credit card, but not if the refund is given as

e. whose purchase prices are refunded to the customer's credit card, and charge no such fees if refunded

I got stuck between a and d. The option 'd' does not seem to have complete sentence after but. So we have a run on sentence. Am I missing something?

v06 31 most peoplw who betray

Most people who betray their country through some form of espionage are driven by irrational desires to feel powerful or important, to seek revenge, or even to take risks. If these people were thinking rationally, they would not be involved in such self-destructive behavior.

The argument above rests on which of the following assumptions?

A. Self-destruction is the most frequent result of espionage.
B. The desire to feel powerful is always irrational.
C. Those involved in espionage do not have rational reasons for their behavior.
D. Espionage is rarely a successful way to gain revenge.
E. Risk-taking is a less frequent motivation for espionage than the desire to feel important.

Not so desperate but a view is welcome

I always think I have an unconventional profile and then I come across someone really unconventional. Well, i'll get to the knitty gritty...

Academics
-Undergrad: Top 6 British (considered part of the British Ivies) - conc: Management
-GPA: 1st = 3.9-4.0 GPA
-GMAT: 740

Background
-Age: 28
-Ethnicity: South Asian (not Indian) but British citizen

Work Exp
-2 years at a bulge bracket bank (Goldman Sachs/JP/Morgan Stanley), 2 summer internships
-Work Achievements: Far greater number of deals than most analysts. I am also very active in diversity recruitment. I help also run a buddy network at the bank, pairing new analysts up either based on alma mater or UG degree concentration (whichever one runs out first)

ECs:
-Finance
-Entrepreneurship (promoting on campus as well as holding competitions for students to win start-up capital)
-Video and Music production
-Poetry (mentor to inner city spoken word clubs).
-Run a summer programme for low income family kids applying to college
-Charity trips to Asia (teaching in Thailand)
-Started a health related non-profit - helped over 500 people and has been recognised as one of the best np's in the country

Here is where I guess I have the unusual profile (or maybe not). I was at a college in London studying Law with a year abroad (4 year degree). In my third year, my father was diagnosed with Leukemia and I had to drop out to return home and take care of the family. In the process, I gave up a job on wall st (offered a job on condition of graduating) to do so but I had no other choice. It was because of that diagnosis that I started a non-profit. I then managed to transfer (transfer not common in UK)/get into a to a college that was much closer to home which allowed me to travel. I switched my concentration to business and management hence I graduated @ 25/26

Interests: social entrepreneurship, finance (buyouts of high growth comps), music industry
^ I know I have a weird set of interests. I liked my job and get along with senior management. I have this non-finance side which does things entrepreneurial and socially-concious related. I help aspiring singers and producers get their material to music labels and hence I'm immersed in that.

Recommendations: one Wharton MBA alum and another Harvard MBA alum

I'm not too hell bent on HSW but would fancy my chances anyway.

I realise my age is a bit of an issue but would adcoms understand the fact that I I spent the better part of 2 years at home due to father's illness?

help to set up a new study plan

Hi guys, first post here eventhough I've been lurking around for some time.

So, this saturday I took the gmat and as I expected took a big blow because of a poor preparation - 600 (42Q, 31V)

I struggled through quant, wasting time on silly exercises at first and literally rushing the last 7 questions (I realized I had 5 minutes for those 7 questions).

I didn't find verbal to be hard time wise (finished with 8 minutes left), though I used some POE I wasn't 100% sure of what I was doing. Did most of it by ear (I'm not a native english speaker).

My preparation was basically doing once de MGMAT 8book pack + OG + Q REVIEW 2nd ED + GMATPrep CAT (620 - 41Q, 34V - the day before the exam).
On the GMATPrep CAT I didn't had timming issues (10 min left on quant and 15 on verbal). While reviewing the mistakes on quant, most were because of trying to do things quickly and not reading correctly the questions.

Now I want revenge!

I'm looking to structure a new 2 month study plan (the objective is 700). Take into consideration that I will have to study the new IR section!

1) IR: How much time to spend? and where from should I study? Books/Exs recommendations?
2) Quant: Should I review the OG again or focus on doing new exercises? Where from? There's tons of options out there so I need some input that will fit my time frame.
3) Verbal: I found the MGMAT RC and CR to be, in my opinion, not so good; maybe focus on PowerScore CR/SC? How long will it take?
4) CAT's: take every available CAT! (MGMAT + free ones)

Any other thoughts/recommendations?

Music instrument

Can learning to play an instrument give me tangible resume advantage? I understand that the most important reason to take up an instrument if because you like it, but I also want to know how I could get involved in learning an instrument so it provides me with an extra-curricular activity. Since I work full time and not in school anymore there is no school band I can try out for.

Therefore, what kind of music instrument play credential I can build while working full time so that it can also give me an extra-curricular to list on my resume?

questions regarding study plan and study materials.

Hi,
I am a international student who plans on retaking GMAT.
I've already taken GMAT twice; first attempt : M46 V34 650 second attempt : M47 V34 650
As you can, my score didn't improve at all.
The result of the second test was really frustratung because I studied for three months after I took the first test.
Then, I realized that how long I study dosen't improve my score; how I study matters.
So I decided to renew my study plan.

First of all, I will explain how I've studied.

First, I solved OG 12th & OG Verbal review and then took the first test.

Some people say that even though I solved OG, I should review it at least twice, but I thought that that method was inefficient because whenever I saw questions, automatically, answers came to my mind.

So I started to study with paper based GMAT questions and some materials called GWD.
Both are retired real GMAT questions. I thought that the best way to sduty is to keep solving problems, so I did so.
But the problem was that both materials did not have official explantions and that sometimes they have incorrect answers, so I had to depend on unofficial explanation on the Internet. As a result, I couldn't analyzed the problems thoroughtly. However, I believed that solving hundreds of questions would help me understand although I didn't analyze the quesions thoroghtly, so I kept doing so.
Looking back, that was the main reason that I failed to improve my score, which made me renew my study plan.

Thses are questions while I was renewing my study plan.

1. Is the math review in the OG good enough for preparing GMAT math?

2. Is there any books that contain only questions?
(I found "1037 practice questions for the new GMAt" in Amazon. How is it?)

3. Is it worth buying online tests such as Manhatten CAT?
( I tried free Manhatten CAT, but I felt like it was quite different real GMAT, especially Math and RC)
What about others such as Kaplan?

4. I will buy Manhatten SC 5th edition, should I buy the OG 13th to study Manhatten SC 5th edition?

Am I a top 3 business school applicant? Let me know!

Age: 28 Gender: Male
Experience: 5 Years Full-Time

My story in a nutshell:

I am co-founder and majority shareholder of a online education company. The company was founded in 2005, when I was 22. and has grown to employ over 100 US employees and 200 Indian employees. I am involved in all aspects of the company, but mainly act as lead sales and marketing director. I also act as in-house counsel and I have significant international experience traveling and working in India as a manager. Last year the company had more than 12 million dollars in revenue. I expect the company to grow by more than 500% in the next 10 years.

UGPA- 3.125 from top 25 public school-social science major- I know this isn't great but I'm hoping my GMAT score will help balance this out.

Law School GPA- 2.35-from Top 50-75 Law school I enrolled in law school shortly after I founded my company. In retrospect, it was a poor decision as I was not able to give law school the time it deserved. I focused on my business at the expense of my studies and my grades suffered seriously. I ended up graduating and passing the bar, but my academic record is spotty, especially law school. Not sure how to deal with this on applications. It should be a positive that I'm licensed and have expertise in business and corporate law, but the grades haunt me.

GMAT- 750 on my second attempt (Q49/V43) AWA 6.0, first attempt 700 Q45/V41 AWA 6.0

What are my chances at HBS? Stanford? Wharton? Be honest. If you think I have a shot, please advise how I should frame my story and deal with my weaknesses. Thanks a bunch in advance!!

Same Day Practice Tests---560 to 740. Should I be worried?

Hey all,

So I'm taking my GMAT this Friday... a few days ago I took a Princeton Review practice test and scored a 560. I'm shooting for a 700, so I was panicking and nearly cancelled my test. To try it again later in the day, I took a GMAT official practice test and got a 740. Is this just PR skewing scores to get you to buy more products? Should I be worried? Or should I take the GMAT official practice test to be more accurate and think that I should be close to my goal?

Thanks!

GMAT question pack difficulty

Hi all,

I have been working through the GMAT Question Pack 1 Quant over the past 2 days and hitting around 65% of the Medium and Hard questions.

Just now I did a timed run of 50 questions and got 77% correct (Quant Medium/Hard questions mixed) - just wondering if this is OK or below average? I'm sitting the exam in 4 days and would like to get q47+
The oil wells of Borlandia produced so much oil that the market was overwhelmed; consumption did not keep pace with production. As a result, oil prices fell. The government of Borlandia attempted to support oil prices through a subsidy scheme: oil producers who voluntarily limited the amount of oil they produced were compensated directly by the government up to a specified maximum payment.

The program instituted by the government of Borlandia, if successful, will not be a net cost to the government. Which of the following, if true, is the best basis for an explanation of how this could be true?

A Depressed oil prices meant operating losses for oil producers, decreasing the income of oil producers, and thus decreasing the taxes paid to the government by oil producers.

B Oil production in countries other than Borlandia declined in the same year that Borlandia's government instituted the compensatory scheme.

C In the first quarter after Borlandia's government instituted the compensatory scheme, oil production declined 8 percent.

D Because the government specified a maximum subsidy payment per oil producer, those producers with numerous wells in production received less support per well than those producers with fewer wells in production.

E Oil producers desiring to qualify for the compensatory scheme could not continue to produce oil and simply withhold it from the market.

Older cats do not always get all the vitamins they need from regular cat food. Since a lack of nutrition leads to illness and lethargy, older cats that do not receive dietary supplements are at an increased risk for many feline diseases.

Which of the following, if true, provides the most support for the argument above?

A The range of vitamins in regular cat food is smaller than the range of vitamins in specialty cat foods.
Exhaust released from a combustion engine is harmful when breathed in significant quantities. Since exhaust poses a particular danger to health, Congress needs to place regulations on the use of motorized vehicles and lawn care tools.

Which of the following, if true, does the most to strengthen the given argument?

A In heavily populated cities where motorized vehicles are most common, the level of exhaust often exceeds maximum safety levels.

B The health risks associated with exhaust are much less severe than those associated with an equivalent amount of second hand cigarette smoke.

C The most commonly used mode of transportation in the population over which Congress has authority is bicycles.

D Coal burning locomotives produce a much deadlier exhaust than do combustion engines.

E If Congress were to ban lawn care tools, there would be no significant benefit to the health of the population over which Congress has authority.
In an effort to develop a treatment regimen that would effectively reduce the number and severity of outbreaks in patients who suffer from adult acne, the pharmaceutical company Skinworth directed dermatologists participating in its research study to increase the dosage of the medication that had been proven to reduce bacteria on the skin and diminish blemishes and redness. Accordingly, the patients taking part in the study followed the doctors’ instructions and regularly used the higher doses of the medication. Nonetheless, the patients reported that the condition of their skin had worsened somewhat.

Which of the following, if true, most helps to explain why acting on the dermatologists’ instructions failed to achieve the research study’s goal?

A The change in dosage increased the amount of the drug required, making the treatment significantly more expensive.

B The amount of medication used does not significantly affect the ease with which patients can follow their treatment regimens.

C Most of the patients participating in Skinworth’s study have severe problems with acne and are especially vulnerable to sudden flare-ups.

D When too much of the drug is used, it irritates the skin, causing bumps and splotching.

E Some of the patients participating resigned from Skinworth’s study because they were unsatisfied with the results of the treatment.

Anthropologists who study....

1 Anthropologists who study orangutans,
distant cousins of the human race, find
in the animals’ behavior hints of how our
earliest ancestors may have lived. It has
5 long been accepted that primates
originally dwelt in the treetops and only
migrated to the ground as forests began
to dwindle. While to a certain extent all
primates except humans spend at least
10 some time dwelling in trees, the
orangutan hardly ever ventures to the
forest floor. Adult orangutans can grow
as heavy as 330 pounds and live for
decades, requiring copious amounts of
15 fruit simply to stay alive. Thus, they
become very jealous of the territory
where they find their food.
Compounding this territoriality are the
breeding habits of orangutans, since
20 females can only breed every few years
and, like humans, give birth not to litters
but single offspring.
Consequently, orangutans are solitary,
territorial animals who have difficulty
25 foraging in any part of the forest where
they were not raised. Orangutans taken
from poachers by customs agents
undergo incredible hardship on their
return to the wild. Incorrectly relocating
30 a male orangutan is especially
problematic, often ending in the animal’s
death at the hands of a rival who sees
not only his territory but also the females
of his loosely knit community under
35 threat from an outsider. While humans,
like chimpanzees, are more gregarious
and resourceful than orangutans, the
latter provide anthropologists with useful
information about the behavior of pre-
40 hominid primates and how apelike
behavior influenced our ancestors’
search for food and family beneath the
forest’s canopy.

The primary purpose of this passage is to:

A describe some behavioral and evolutionary characteristics of orangutans
B analyze the reasons why early primates left their forest dwellings
C illustrate the dangers posed to orangutans by poachers
D show how orangutan behavior differs from that of other primates
E criticize anthropologists who misinterpret orangutan behavior

ANSWER:

[Reveal] Spoiler:

A

The author of the passage discusses
“orangutans taken from poachers” (lines 23) in order to:

A stress the importance of preserving orangutans as a species
B indicate the widespread practice of animal poaching
C refute the theory that orangutans can live in a variety of environments
D contrast the behavior of orangutans with that of other apes
E emphasize the consequences of orangutan territoriality

ANSWER:

[Reveal] Spoiler:

E

The passage indicates that it is difficult to return orangutans to the wild for which of the following reasons?

I. The threat posed by newcomers to other orangutans' territory
II. The conflict between males over available females
III. The scarcity of available food in the orangutan’s environment

A I only
B I and II only
C I and III only
D II and III only
E I, II, and III

ANSWER:

[Reveal] Spoiler:

B

Which of the following can be inferred about differences between the behavior of orangutans and that of other ape species?

A While orangutans spend much of their time in the treetops, other apes live exclusively on the ground.

B Orangutans and other types of apes are all sociable species, but orangutans are more likely to bond for life.

C Apes such as chimpanzees rely less upon their size than the average orangutan does.

D Orangutans spend less time in the company of other members of their species than do some other apes.

E Because of their stringent territoriality, orangutans are less likely to elude capture by poachers than are other apes.

ANSWER:

[Reveal] Spoiler:

D

Over the past couple of decades, professional and amateur...

Over the past couple of decades, professional and amateur photographers alike have been increasingly confronted with an unexpected problem, an issue that seldom arose with conventional film photography. In contrast to print film technology, the advent of digital photography allows a photographer to store a near-infinite number of images in a very small space, and to instantaneously share digital photos via an Internet connection or by sending the image from cell phone to cell phone. Since the digital image can be copied without loss of resolution, adopting digital photography in favor of film may seem to be the ideal solution for preserving photos indefinitely. But while traditional prints may fade over time, gradually losing resolution or parts of the image, digital images are far more vulnerable to wholesale eradication due to a hard drive crash or a malicious computer virus. Another consideration is that whole collections of images can become inaccessible due to the rapid evolution of the storage medium. Even when taking care to save photo files in the most popular format, photographers must contend with the fact that storage media become regularly superseded by newer technology.

To avoid image loss through accident or obsolescence, family archivists hoping to preserve their children''s photos for posterity should consider making backups the first line of defense in preserving digital information. Many universities and businesses regularly transfer all digital data into new formats as the technology becomes available, and individual consumers may simply have to resign themselves to doing the same. Labeling the archived file with the date and subject of the photo, just as generations have done with print media, is always advisable. And finally, producing archival print copies for storage may be the best security: a box full of photos can last up to 100 years under appropriate environmental conditions, far longer than platforms for data storage typically remain popular.

As a whole, the passage is primarily concerned with:

A contrasting the advantages of film photography to the benefits of digital photograph

B advocating a return to conventional film photography

C recommending solutions to a problem inherent with the use of a newer technology

D demonstrating that, because the digital images can be copied without loss of resolution, this format is superior to film prints

E discussing the evolution of photographic methods over time

Answer:
Real GMAT score vs Kaplan CAT results

Well, I am very much confused. Better to say I feel desperate. I have been working on the GMAT for the last 2-3 months, the last 2 weeks like a crazy. I ve managed to reach 600 score with CAT Kaplan. Today I have done the Official GMAT test 1 (2 tests are available) and i score 510. Frankly, I do not know what tosay. I have my exam on Tuesday, and...yeah.

Any ideas, what is the difference bw the Official GMAT 1 test and the Kaplan CAT?

Thanks in advance

Can you rate my argument ?

Hello,

I am a non-native speaker and planning to present the GMAT this week or in the following weeks. I would like to have some advices on my writtings.
Can you please give me your feedback on the below argument and try to evaluate what score I deserve ?

By reading, you will quickly see that I used chineseburned.

Thanks a lot.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following appeared in The Homebuilder magazine, a local publication with a focus on construction and sale of real-estate properties:

“According to the most recent survey of our readers, nearly 70% of the respondents indicated that they are planning to build or purchase a new home over the next 2 years. These results indicate that the growth in the construction industry is likely to accelerate in the near future. Therefore, this industry continues to offer lucrative opportunities for investment.”

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound.

The argument claims that the construction industry is likely to accelerate in the near future based on a recent survey of The Homebuilder magazine, reporting that 70% of the respondents indicated that they are planning to build or purchase a new home over the next two years. Stated in this way the argument fails to mention several key factors, on the basis of which it could be evaluated. The conclusion of the argument relies on assumption for which there is no clear evidence. Hence, the argument is weak, and unconvincing and has several flaws.

First, the argument readily assumes that the respondents of the survey represent a good sample of the population. This statement is a stretch and not substantiated in any way. The respondents are more likely to be readers of the Homebuilder magazine because they are interested in purchasing or building a new house in the near future, and are looking for advices or opportunities in this magazine. For example, if I plan to build a new house, I will be really interested in searching advices in construction publication and looking for opportunity to find the field of my dream; this will be a good reason to read every week a magazine with a focus on construction and sale of real-estate properties. Clearly, the respondents of the survey are more likely to not represent the overall population of the country and the percentage of 70% would not be a representative percentage of the population. The argument could have been much clearer if it explicitly stated that the survey was conducted on readers that are representing a good sample of the population.

Second the argument claims that because most of the respondents indicated that they are planning to build or purchase over the next 2 years, the construction industry is likely to accelerate and grow in the near future. This is again a very weak an unsupported claims as the argument does not demonstrate any correlation between the growth in the next 2 years and the situation after this 2 years period. To illustrate, let assume that the prediction of the survey will occurs over the next two years and that an important global crisis, like the one we encountered in the year 2010, will happen afterwards, the prediction of the survey that the industry will evolve is more likely to not happen due to others difficulties that the surveyed doesn't not took into account while responding to that survey. Furthermore, to estimate the evolution of an event with much reliability as possible, the past and present events are needed. However, the surveyed only provide information of the present period; nothing about the past. In fact, this is not all clear that the construction industry will accelerate while the next two years construction will grow to 2%. If the argument had provided evidence that the construction has continuously evolved since 10 years the argument would have been a lot more convincing.

Finally, more detailed information would be helping to evaluate the relevance of the argument. How are the other industries going to evolve in the near future in the country? Are there a lot of empty fields in the country allowing the inhabitants to build new constructions? What is the average age of the people willing to build or purchase an house and what is the average age of the readers of The Homebuilder magazine? Without convincing answers to these questions, one is left with the impression that the claim is more a wishful thinking rather than a substantive evidence.

In conclusion, the argument is flawed for the above mentioned reasons and is therefore unconvincing. It could be considerably strengthened if the author clearly mentioned all relevant facts : a sample representing the overall population, more information on the past evolution of the construction industry, and more detailed facts on the condition the survey was realized and on the evolution of the country in other industries. Without this information, the argument remains unsubstantiated and open to debate.

Two chefs, Chef Andrew and Chef Bonnie, were hired to prepare a dinner. The two chefs began working at the same time, but Chef Andrew was only able to work for 2 hours. How many hours did it take Chef Bonnie, working alone, to finish making the dinner?

(1)Working alone, Chef Andrew made 1/4 of the meal.

(2)It would have taken 6 hours for Chef Bonnie to cook the entire meal herself.
